Vary it by using other toppings, such as roasted fennel, tomatoes, and black olives or zucchini, feta, and thyme. The tart can be made a day ahead, refrigerated, and served at room temperature or rewarmed gently in a 350°F (180°C) oven. Cut it into smaller squares for a terrific party appetizer.   3 tablespoons olive oil 2 small red onions, halved and cut into 1-inch (2.5-cm) pieces Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 small bunch Swiss chard, stemmed and cut into 1-inch (2.5-cm) pieces All-purpose flour for rolling 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (half of a 17 oz/ 530 g package), thawed 1⁄4 lb (125 g) Gorgonzola cheese, crumbled 1 large egg, lightly beaten   *Serves 4. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).  Warm 2 tablespoons of the olive oil in a frying pan over high heat. Add the onions and sauté until soft, about 4 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and season with salt and pepper. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until the onions turn a deep brown, about 10 minutes. Add the balsamic vinegar and cook until the liquid is absorbed, about 2 minutes longer. Transfer the onions to a bowl. Return the pan to medium-high heat; do not wipe the pan clean. Warm the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil and add the chard. Season with salt and pepper and sauté, tossing the chard to coat in the oil, just until beginning to wilt, about 3 minutes. Transfer to the bowl with the onions, toss to combine, and let cool. On a floured work surface, roll out the puff pastry into a 10-by-14-inch (25-by-35-cm) rectangle. Fold over 1 inch (2.5 cm) of each side of the dough to create a border. Fold the dough gently in half and center it over a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Gently unfold the dough onto the baking sheet. Prick the dough all over with the tines of a fork. Distribute the chard and onion mixture evenly around the tart and top with the cheese, leaving the borders uncovered. Brush the borders of the tart with the egg. Bake until golden brown, 22–25 minutes. Let cool slightly, then cut into squares and serve.

The 1970s classic that sparked the homebrewing revolution in Vermont

Long before Heady Topper or Hill Farmstead, Vermont was already at the forefront of the American beer revolution. In the 1970s, the big-name brews like Bud and Coors ruled the roost, and homebrewed beer was still as illegal as moonshine. But a small group of Vermonters―people like Tim Matson and Lee Anne Dorr―weren't the kind to let a little thing like the law stop them from enjoying their own brews. They shared their concoctions with friends and family and then went a step farther: publishing the first homebrewer's guide since Prohibition and selling it out of the back of their truck. Now, forty years later, that groundbreaking book is back. Featuring a brand-new introduction, Mountain Brew shows you how to produce homemade malt, grow your own hops, and keep away thirsty neighbors who want to steal your hooch. Through recipes and colorful stories from their day, let these Green Mountain boys (and girls) show you how to make better beer than you'd ever find at the local watering hole. 25 B&W Illustrations

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Are you a home brewer? Read this book for the history! By Amazon Customer This is a blast - it's NOT a manual on proper brewing techniques, it's best looked at as a glimpse into the beginnings of home brewing, and the eventual growth of craft beer. If you're a beer person, it's a good read, and if you're a brewer, it's a must read if you want to see where it all started. A nice touch is an old photo of the late, great Greg Noonan of the Vermont Pub and Brewery - I knew Greg through some events staged with UVM, and any Vermont beer book MUST have something of his in it.

Peter Farrelly's story "The Saturday Night Before Easter Sunday" has been nominated for an Edgar Award for Best Short Story!Named a Favorite Book of 2015 by Scott MacKay at Rhode Island Public Radio"Even Providence's signature public art has a dark side in Providence Noir (Akashic), which includes a story called 'WaterFire's Smell Tonight' by Pablo Rodriguez. Each tale in this anthology edited by Ann Hood is set in a different part of the city. Pulitzer Prize winner Elizabeth Strout's story takes place at Trinity Repertory Company. Thomas Cobb, whose novel Crazy Heart was made into a movie with Jeff Bridges, tees up at Triggs Memorial Golf Course, and Dumb and Dumber co-writer and co-director Peter Farrelly, a graduate of Providence College, sets his story in the Elmhurst neighborhood, near his old college stomping grounds."--Boston Globe"Providence, of course, has a history of crime, the mob, corruption and other goodies. In this collection of 15 stories...we are given a darkly hued tour of the city in all its nooks and crannies by such excellent writers as Hood herself, John Searles, Bruce DeSilva, Peter Farrelly, Elizabeth Strout, Hester Kaplan and others, each with their own style, tone and sly approach that will keep you reading, waiting for the sudden murder, the end of troubled relationships, the discovery of bones....[A] wonderful collection."--Providence JournalAkashic Books continues its groundbreaking series of original noir anthologies, launched in 2004 with Brooklyn Noir. Each story is set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the city of the book.Featuring brand-new stories by: John Searles, Elizabeth Strout, Taylor M. Polites, Hester Kaplan, Robert Leuci, Amity Gaige, Peter Farrelly, Pablo Rodriguez, Bruce DeSilva, Marie Myung-Ok Lee, Luanne Rice, Dawn Raffel, Thomas Cobb, LaShonda Katrice Barnett, and Ann Hood.Anyone who has spent time in Providence, Rhode Island, knows that lurking in the shadows are many sinister noir elements and characters. The city is ripe for this volume, and Akashic is proud to have recruited the amazing Ann Hood as editor. The impressive contributor list conveys the caliber of Providence Noir, which joins Cape Cod Noir, Boston Noir, and Boston Noir 2: The Classics in sketching a dark and alternative portrait of these New England locales. From the introduction by Ann Hood:"Providence was founded in 1636 by a rogue named Roger Williams. Williams escaped here when Massachusetts was ready to deport him back to England. In the almost four hundred years since, we've become infamous for all sorts of crimes and misdemeanors, including serving as home base for the Patriarca crime family for decades. My very own Uncle Eddie--I can hear Mama Rose screaming at me: 'He wasn't a blood relative! He was related through marriage!'--was gunned down in the Silver Lake section of town in 1964, just a year after he drove me in his white Cadillac convertible in a parade as the newly crowned Little Miss Natick. The writer Geoffrey Wolff told me that once he went to a barber in Princeton, New Jersey and the barber asked him where he was from. 'Providence,' Wolff told him. The barber put down his scissors, raised his hands in the air, and said, 'Providence? Don't shoot!'"I've asked fourteen of my favorite writers to contribute short stories to Providence Noir. We have stories to make you shiver, stories to make you think, stories that will show you my beautiful, noirish city in a way it’s never been highlighted before."

Providence Noir (Akashic Noir)From Akashic Books

Review "John Searles's 'The Pig' combines a touching examination of pathos and mystery. Robert Leuci's 'The Vengeance Taker' is a powerful and ultimately creepy story of earned revenge. LaShonda Katrice Barnett's 'Waltz Me Once Again' is a compelling story of violence and tragedy. Thomas Cobb performs the remarkable feat of making a simple round of golf into a surprisingly suspenseful tale, '$1,000 Nassau.' And Peter Farrelly's 'The Saturday Night Before Easter Sunday' closes out the volume with a superb--and hilarious--inside look at the world of novelists, phonies, publishers, and schemers."--Publishers Weekly"If you like short stories set in Providence, check out Providence Noir, edited by Ann Hood."--Providence Journal, Bill Reynolds's column"The stories are about as diverse and self-destructive cast of characters throughout Providence of varied classes, race, and educational backgrounds....Peppered throughout the book and sometimes even the driving aspect of a story are complex contemporary hot button topics like gentrification and racial profiling with haunting echoes of some of the dark episodes in the past few years....It's a reminder that reality can feel as helplessly tangled as noir films and stories."--New York Daily News"It's hard to imagine a better setting for a crime story than Providence....there is no doubt it provides ample backdrop for stories without heroes or happy endings. Thanks to the partnership between Akashic Books, an independent Brooklyn-based publisher, and local writer Ann Hood, we now have Providence Noir--a collection of gritty, hard-boiled short stories that are set within different neighborhoods throughout the city."--Providence Monthly"Providence Noir is teeming with muscular, gritty, hard-boiled short stories alongside borderline modern-day gothic tales. Damaged characters, flawed plans of bloody retribution, double-crossing ambitions, and pure murder in mind make it a must-read. You won't find better noir stories this year."--New York Journal of Books"This is a perfect summer read. It's Providence with an edge, written by 15 writers who know how to shape stories that lead us down unexpected paths of a city that we love. Out of towners may see it as make believe tales of suspense. To most of us, it's just home."--East Side Monthly"You get Alzheimer's, lesbians, Mafia and more as you read along. This is a very good collection of stories that will stay with you after you close the book. They are stories to think about."--Journey of a Bookseller

I'm from Massachusetts, and spent a lot of time in the Providence, RI area. That, coupled with the fact that I love the noir genre, got me to open the book. What kept me reading was the immense talent of the contributing authors. While all of these stories share genre and the city setting, they vary widely in content and writing style. We have sorrow, fear, grief, some humor, and, of course, crime.Several stories were standouts for me, an easy 5-star rating. A few didn't hold the same appeal, though that was more a matter of personal taste than anything to do with the writing. They are all masterfully written, with characters that feel real and suck you right into their world.Being familiar with Providence, Rhode Island is absolutely not a prerequisite to enjoying this collection of stories. The authors paint their portraits of this place with such beautiful brush strokes that you will easily see it through their eyes.

I don't know how accurately the various stories portray the city, but they're very interesting, very well written - several with ironic twists along the way.

This novelette is divided into spring, summer, fall, and winter letters written by a "giddy sixteen-year-old" to her older, newly-married sister. Mistake-prone Nicole, the letter-writer, has taken full charge of the family cooking duties since her sister's marriage, much to her chagrin and to my amusement as a reader. As Nicole learns how to balance new responsibilities with old ones, she grows in her walk with Christ in a very down-to-earth way.A great book for young-to-mid-teens as well as for even younger children (or as a read-aloud), Letters from a Scatter-Brained Sister amuses and edifies with ease. Highly recommended!

By Liberty Bluebelle I had begun to despair of finding a 5-star-worthy story by an independent young author, but last night, after reading the first few lines of "Letters", I knew I had found one. Usually a story has a good plot, or sparkling characters, or an engaging writing style, or spiritual edification naturally worked into the storyline. Let's go over those one at a time.1. Good plotline? Check. The growth of Nicole as seen through her letters was well-planned out and complete. From complete disasters in the kitchen, to a lessening dislike for Kitchen duty, to Nicole's sudden fondness for salad, it was all well done.2. Sparkling characters? Check. Nicole's character as a scatter-brained sister came off beautifully. The brothers were characteristic boys, and the older sister I could easily recognize as being real, somewhere in the world. They were almost real, especially the "I" character of Nicole. Good job making her endearing!3. Engaging writing style? Check. Writing strictly in letter form where the reader does not get to read the other side of the letters can easily be over-written, but not so here. Nicole's letters felt real, and managed to clearly let us know what she was responding to in Erin's letter without re-writing it. Fun to read!4. Spiritual Edification--Naturally? Check. This was very well done as well. It flowed naturally in the letters in Nicole's jaunty voice, and was an encouraging reminder to seek the Lord's help in everything. This was the first story I've read in a while that I didn't mentally edit! The author gave me a copy to review,But I promise, that's all she asked me to do.It didn't have to be nice, it didn't have to be longIt only had to be true, only my thoughts should belong. So that is what this is, with opinions all my ownGo read the story, you'll find I'm not alone!

He possesses a spirit of adventure that may exceed both. His twenty years of exploring the mysteries of New Guinea are superbly outlined and related in this engaging account. Although a mammalogist by profession, his interests range far beyond any academic discipline. We follow his efforts to meet and gain acceptance by the remote peoples of the New Guinea highlands. They are a diverse lot, and every new contact is fraught with uncertainty. He introduces us to the teasing pleasures of New Guinea pidgin, a language adopted by indigineous peoples to cross the nearly 1 000 languages that exist on the island.Throwim' Away Leg, New Guinean pidgin for a journey, is an appropriate title for this book. Flannery's 15 long-term expeditions took him over most of the island, meeting the people, tracking animals and assessing the changes in the ecology. It is difficult, in this jet travel age to comprehend the impact of "remote people," but Flannery has done it. He's adept at sharing the wonder he felt in his travels. We feel his fears, his joys of discovery, his sadness at the incursion of industrial civilization in an unprepared land. Flannery's account is given with an astonishing detachment. He recognizes the needs of both the indigenous people and the invaders. Cannibalism, so abhorrent to "civilized" readers, is placed in its true framework as viewed by the New Guinean mountain peoples. He's aware of the population pressures on local resources among the tribes, not excusing, but imparting rare understanding of the reality of life in wilderness. The author's love of wildlife is made clear throughout the book. An encounter with three-metre-long python that tried desperately to throttle him is related with incredible compassion. One can only sympathize with the pilot and passengers who shared the cockpit of a small aircraft with it on its journey to Port Moresby. Flannery's real feelings, however, are for the varieties of tree kangaroos living on the island. He asserts the high point of his travels was the classification of a rare black and white species of this creature. High point, indeed! Threethousand metres up in the New Guinean highlands, local hunters brought him the chewed remains of two "Dingisios" - enough to identify and describe this rare animal.Flannery's enthusiasms and vivid desriptive powers make this book an unforgettable read. His descriptions of the impact of outsiders, from both East and West, portray a land under immense stress. Not only Western mining and lumber companies, who have seared the landscape with roads, mines and felling, but Indonesia's settlement programmes come under his penetrating gaze. He recognizes their needs, but urges better forms of accomodation are required. The biological story is conveyed well integrated with social, political and environmental issues. An all-encompassing study, this book will give the reader many fresh insights and topics for further reflection.

In it, mammalogist Tim Flannery regales us with tales from his many years in New Guinea, searching for new species of mammals on the island, the second largest in the world. A difficult island to work in - highly mountainous; extremely few roads, most villages so isolated that they can only be reached by small planes flying to landing strips hacked out of the jungle; parts of it some of the rainiest spots on earth, some areas receiving 11 meters or more of rain a year; possessing many dangerous animals ranging from crocodiles to snakes to huge spiders; tropical diseases and parasites a real problem in many areas (including malaria and scrub typhus, from which Flannery almost died from when bit by an infected tick) Flannery had his work cut out for them as he spent over two decades on the island, both in the eastern half, the independent nation of Papua New Guinea, and the western section, Irian Jaya, part of Indonesia. Flannery is a highly accomplished scientist, having discovered 16 new species of mammals in Melanesia, many of them in New Guinea. Many of these and others are described in the book, and make for fascinating reading. We meet the Black-tailed Giant-rat, the bite from its two centimeter long razor sharp incisors much feared by the inhabitants of the island. The Three-striped Dasyure, a vividly marked rat-sized marsupial predator, one of New Guinea's few mammals active during daylight hours. The Snow Mountains Robin, one of the rarest birds in the world, found in the high alpine regions of the Meren Glacier in Irian Jaya, one of the very few equatorial glaciers in the world. _Antechinus, a small carnivorous marsupial notable in that the male only lives for 11 months, existing only to breed. The diminutive, dingo-like New Guinea singing dog, which arrived in the islands some 2,000 years ago. The six o'clock cicada, a tremendously loud insect that received its name from its trill it emits roughly 6am and 6pm daily. The famous Birds of Paradise, breathtaking in their beauty, several species of which are extremely rare. He also describes the Long-fingered Triok, a black and white skunk smelling possum with the fourth finger of each hand a great elongated probe for finding insect larvae; you never know what he is going to find next lurking in the barely explored misty peaks and dripping jungles of the island. Three of the most remarkable animals are ones that Flannery discovered or in one case rediscovered. One is _Maokopia ronaldi_, an extinct marsupial herbivore that once dwelt in the high mountain forests. Panda-like in appearance, size, and probably habits, Flannery named this new genus and species from fossils he found in Irian Jaya. Bulmer's Fruit-bat, a bat though extinct for 12,000 years, the largest cave dwelling bat in the world, Flannery was elated to have found them alive in extremely rugged western Papua New Guinea. The one though that Flannery is the most proud of discovering was the Dingiso, a new species of tree-kangaroo he found in the alpine areas of Irian Jaya, a beautiful black and white animal, surprising tame, threatened but fortunately partially protected by native taboos against harming them. However, as remarkable as all of that is, one could argue that the real stars of this book are the people of New Guinea, particularly the indigenous Melanesian peoples that Flannery spends a great deal of time with and clearly loves. Much of his time researching in the field he was based out of the villages of such people as the Wopkaimin, the Telefol, and the Goilala where he became fast friends with many throughout the island, in both countries, viewing them not as savage barbarians, but as noble, often quite kind people, their older generation vast repositories of cultural and natural history lore. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the books were the many stories about life in those villages, some of the tales tragic, others heartwarming, and many hilarious. Particularly fascinating was what he wrote about the history of cannibalism on the island. Apparently it did exist in the not too distant past, actually in the living memory of some of the villagers he encountered. Though not an every day occurrence by any means, cannibalism was an important part of New Guinea life; indeed, one group Flannery spent some time with, the Miyanmin, were once avid raiders, and actually referred to the neighboring Atbalmin people as bokis es bilong miplea, which more or less translates into something like our refrigerator. Though cannibalism is now a thing of the past, its effects are still felt he writes, as villages once got some of their population from raids of other villages, the adults of that village were consumed and the children raised as their own; now, that is no longer a source of new people for villages and some are facing some depopulation as a result. Flannery sounds several cautionary notes in his book. Several species of New Guinea mammals and birds are in serious danger of extinction from over hunting. Though New Guinea is still a land largely without roads, more and more appear all the time, opening up virgin lands for hunters, loggers, and miners. Indeed in Irian Jaya the latter two are devastating ever larger sections of the island; the massive Freeport mine, which exports over ten million dollars worth of minerals daily, has destroyed large sections of forest with waste mine tailings. He also worries about the future of the people, particularly in Irian Jaya. He believes that in an attempt to make that land more like the rest of Indonesia it is causing not only environmental damage but also cultural damage. Indeed there are concerns over human rights abuses in Irian Jaya, of dissidents disappearing, of remote villagers forced to wear modern clothing and abandon their pig eating culture by distant Muslim politicians, who often find native culture abhorrent. Recommended.

Man and fellow mammals in a rugged land By jackeve@aol.com This is a fascinating look at the mammals (most poignantly, humans) in the forests and caves of New Guinea. Flannery takes usalong on 15 years of searching for both living and fossil traces of everything from tree kangaroos to bats. But the compelling feature of the book is his contact with the isolated villagers, whose ways are as interesting--and imperilled--as the rarer wildlife that Flannery seeks. New Guinea is near the equator, but its highest peaks are in the 14,000 to 16,000 foot range. It is rugged. The island is filled with caves, dense life-filled forests, swamps, and a daunting array of diseases and pests. Peter Matthiessen took us there years ago in his Under the Mountain Wall. Some old ways prevail, but the gun, roads, mines, politics, and exposure to western ways are taking their toll on both man and wildlife. Flannery has a self-depricating manner that reminds of the Canadian naturalist-author Farley Mowat. What next? you think as you read from low-key adventure to low-key adventure. Along the way he teaches you too about those tree kangaroos, rats, bats, bandicoots, wallabies, etc.

The Japanese food cuisine is famous for its delicacy, taste, elegant looks, and health benefits. There is a famous village in Japan called Okinawa Island, where there are largest 100 years old people as compared to the whole world. One of the oldest ladies of the world belonging to Japan has declared that the reason of her long age is eating raw fish and sushi recipes. Most of the Japanese food is made up of rice, soup (generally called miso soup and other soups), and other dishes. Japanese people emphasise on the seasonal ingredients to make their dishes because they are healthy and easily available. There are also many kinds of side dishes in Japanese cuisine like fish, pickled vegetables, and vegetables smoked or cooked in broth. Fish is the most common ingredient in traditional cuisine and many Japanese dishes are also made up of raw fish. The most famous form of Japanese food having raw fishes are sashimi and sushi. Sushi is also famous for its tingling spicy taste throughout the world. One of the famous sushi recipes in the USA is California roll that does not contain raw fish. You can enjoy many of these sushi recipes at China town, but what if you want to prepare them at your home? Sushi emerged from the Japanese cuisine as a famous dish and today it has been eaten in many regions of the globe. Many chefs have done some experiments with this Japanese dish and made up their own variation of sushi. Sushi is prepared by using raw fish like tuna or salmon. Raw fish gives sushi its chewy flavour and taste. Raw fish has many health benefits also. Tuna and salmon have a high amount of Omega-3 fatty acids that other natural vegetables are deprived of. Omega-3 fatty acids contain antioxidants; that are helpful to kill the free radicals inside our body responsible for ageing. However, raw fish is prohibited in many cases like a person suffering from diabetes, liver disease, or pregnant women. Raw fish contains more parasites and bacteria that are not good for the individual suffering from diabetes and liver disease. Some long lived larger fishes like swordfish and tuna have a heavy quantity of mercury that is not safe for pregnant adult females, nursing mothers, and young kids. So, if you are suffering from these diseases than you should consult your physician before eating raw fish sushi. You can kill the surplus quantity of bacteria and parasites by keeping the fish in deep freeze for some time. If you are expecting to get a raw fish sushi, then buy them from an authorized sushi or sashimi grade fish suppliers. Many stockists don’t know how to keep the raw fish to make it dependable for preparing a raw fish sushi and if you purchase your fish from them, you should risk your health. Buy fishes that come from certified water and refrigerate them at once after purchasing them. Don’t preserve your fish for a long time in your refrigerator and use it within 48 hours. I would suggest you to prepare everything before taking out your fish from the refrigerator. Although sushi is the most famous and delicious Japanese dish throughout the world, but it needs lots of preparation and that’s why I have dedicated a separate section for sushi preparation in this book. Let’s get started….. Download your copy today! Take action right away by downloading this book for a limited time discount of only $0.99! Hurry Up!! Stuff the chickens with the rice, jujubes, ginsengs, chestnuts, ginkgo nuts, and garlic cloves. Cross and bind the chicken legs with thread to keep the stuffing in. Put the stuffed chickens in the pot. Add 10 cups of water and simmer them over low heat for about 2 to 3 hours. You can also use the Crockpot if you have one at your home. Transfer the chickens with their broth to the individual bowls. Serve the salt mixed with pepper in a small bowl as a seasoning dip.

It has a simpler, less time consuming recipe for remain that is pretty fantastic. There's enough to pictures and explanations of techniques that make this book great to follow for advanced chefs and beginners. It also throws in cultural background and a history lesson here and there. Would recommend to anyone who loves making tasty food from scratch. This is basically a book of Japanese comfort food. The authors have done a great job of taking traditional Japanese recipes and exposing them to an world-wide audience.

My autobiography of working with wildlife in Africa spanning 45 years. Thirty of these years were mainly with captive cheetahs in top breeding facilities. The heartbreak and problems, the laughter and good times when working with such wonderful creatures. From my early days at Edinburgh Zoo, to Botswana, Alaska and back to South Africa. Working with Ostriches, building a crocodile ranch, managing a small game reserve where cheetahs were our specialty Where I learnt their ways and habits and of special friendships bonded with many of the hand raised cheetahs. Rescuing cheetahs from the wilds of Namibia, where they were about to be shot. Releasing cheetahs in trial projects so that when the time came captive born cheetahs could safely be returned to the wild. Working with lions and managing a Zoo. Travelling to meet up with other cheetah specialists and learning from them Life and death within my human and animal friends. So many people and animals with true character, to make you cry or laugh, be proud or sad. Looking at the world today and wondering if our grandchildren will ever be able to experience what Africa is now and what is happening to our disappearing wildlife. .

I evidently had some preconceived ideas about it being quite a serious matter mostly regarding cheetahs and the campaign to prevent their extinction, but I should have looked more closely at the photograph on the front cover- it provides a big clue about Mr. Strachan's sense of humour and his love for animals. This is the very personal autobiography of a born story teller with a great sense of humour, and his irreverence and enthusiasm for poking fun at life had me chuckling from the start. Anyone who enjoys humorous tales, animals or people who chart their own path instead of obediently following rules will like this book, even if he/she has no particular interest in cheetahs or conservation. To be honest, I had thought the book would be more specifically about cheetahs, and of course there were many, many tales of working with these beautiful cats, but it turned out to be much more than that. The first portion of the book is filled with anecdotes of the author's escapades from childhood to his first job with wild animals, and the remainder of the book focuses on his life experiences, both personal and professional, as he worked with animals in various capacities.I found it very interesting to see how attitudes and accepted practices regarding animals have changed in the past decades, and the stories of the author's experiences with an amazing variety of species kept me reading with great interest far into the wee hours. It was also fascinating to read about life in Africa- so different from my North American life.I'd also like to point something out that Mr. Strachan did not draw special attention to: for decades he has played an extremely important role in the effort to save the cheetah (and African Wild Dogs/Painted Wolves) from extinction, and I suspect he has had more firsthand experience with more cheetah than just about anyone else worldwide. Due to ever increasing pressures from mankind, cheetahs remain in grave peril of extinction and Mr. Strachan, at great personal cost and past the age many people retire, continues to work on increasing their odds of survival. I hope his contributions will become more widely recognized during his lifetimeI also hope readers will encourage others to buy this book, and contact Mr. Strachan to find out how to help save this wonderful species. Alan and his wife, photographer and writer, Linda Rosenlof (http://Yourcheetahspot.co.za) working on several projects, including a book and photography exhibit, focusing on cheetah and conservation presentations. I can't think of anyone more well suited for the task; with over 50 years combined experience of working with these cats, Alan and Linda share their enormous knowledge and love of cheetahs in their books and photographs. It would be fantastic if sales of their books could help them achieve their conservation goals.

By Barry Bousfield A great heartfelt and inspiring story of and by a man who was able to do his own wild thing; away from the office and the humdrum of modernity, and who in the process, almost singlehandedly, saved an iconic species of this endangered planet of ours. Couldn't put the book down; learning about the ups and downs of the life, the family and the beloved cheetahs (amongst other animals) of such an unassuming, humble and rare person. An amazing life and feat, told in a 'by the campfire' style of writing. Reminded me of my Gerald Durrell reading days.

Mallery gives a lot of information about squirrel lifestyle, history, trivia and ideas for facilitating squirrel/bird yard-sharing, all in a way that will make make you laugh as much as the squirrels do. There are even recipes for treats. Information AND entertainment!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I THREW THIS BOOK AWAY! By Absinthe Please What can I say? I ordered this book after reading the two 5 star reviews. I even read a brief excerpt of it - it was part of a poem, the poem contained a gross error, but I ignored it...thinking to myself, "It's only a poem, the rest of the book will be correct and informative and funny, just like the reviews said." But I was wrong. The author kept referring to the squirrels...tree squirrels, mind you...stuffing their cheeks with food until their eyes bulged, or words to that effect. Page after page, chapter after chapter, he wrote about the little creatures stuffing their cheeks with food. Except tree squirrels and fox squirrels DON'T HAVE CHEEK POUCHES! Ground squirrels do, but not the little beasties who were so cutely depicted in the book's drawings. And it really, REALLY IRRITATED me: the fact that I knew more about the grey tree squirrels in my backyard than the guy who'd written this book. So I tossed it into our recycling bin. I did NOT want anyone else to be misinformed, so I saw no point in donating the book or trying to sell it in a garage sale.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. pioneering work on scientific method By george slusser This is one of the great treatises on medicine and on the scientific method. People at the time were still classifying. Claude Bernard said "experiment," and modern science took a leap forward. For his time, he did significant work on the role of the pancreas in diabetes, mainly because of his experimental method. Everyone needs to read this document (and Claude Bernard can write as well). I was surprised to see it on the free Kindle list, but bravo to Amazon and Kindle for putting it out there.
