Redman Except for this book being somewhat dated, it still offers one of the best explanations of what the ether exactly is. (See also Ludwik Kostro's, Einstein and the Ether.) Oliver Lodge detected no viscosity (friction) in the ether, which calls into question the interpretation of the results of the Michelson-Morley experiment. (If there is no friction, then what difference would an "ether wind" make on the speed of light?) If Michelson-Morley is wrong, then perhaps we have been too hasty in abandoning the ether concept. (Albert Einstein, for awhile, dismissed the ether, only later to propose a "new ether.") Oliver Lodge's book, The Ether of Space, will help you sort out fact from fiction regarding the ether.
