"Failsafe is brilliant, so thoroughly researched, eloquently written and, most of all, so needed. It's a wonderful book. Frightening to read while observing the band-aids and half measures being proposed in the US." - Peter Cutler, writer and artist, Boston USA "I am deeply impressed by this holistic treatise, Failsafe. His conclusions are encouraging, to see mother earth and ourselves with the healing hands of a Bodhisattva. A Lotus to him a Buddha to be!" - Axel Traexler, Global Marshall Plan, Austria "For ten thousand years of the agricultural revolution, humans continued to understand that we were deeply embedded in and utterly dependent on nature because farmers pay attention to weather and climate, winter snow and summer moisture, beneficial insects and plants, etc. Over the past century, humanity has undergone an astonishing transition from rural village inhabitants to big city dwellers where we feel ourselves disconnected and isolated from nature and ensconce the economy as our highest priority. The way we see the world, shapes the way we treat it and if we no longer perceive the planet as our sacred home, but instead, as an economic opportunity, then we will continue to log, mine, dam and degrade the biosphere. In Failsafe, Ian Prattis offers a way to a perceptual transformation that is absolutely critical if we are to find a truly sustainable future." - David Suzuki, author, environmentalist, host of CBC's The Nature of Things

Failsafe presents a timely and disturbing argument that Mankind has caused such extreme devastation to the Earth that it is almost irreversible. But the key word here is 'almost' as the author then sets out a case for the Earth's redemption and reclamation as a living, self-renewing planet. Author Dr. Ian Prattis also does a superb job of laying out the necessary steps to help make such a restoration possible. Small wonder that so many prominent people in the environmental field have strongly endorsed this book - including Dr. David Suzuki, famed environmentalist and host of CBC TV's award-winning series The Nature of Things, who also wrote the book's compelling Foreword - this book is a must-read for anyone who truly cares about our planet!

He moves, as he says, 'investigation into Gaia as Metaphor and Gaia as Social Movement to bring it into his ball park - Consciousness'. And indeed, that is a good place to pick up the thread from Lovelock, because even Lovelock's science based proposals for change require a paradigm shift in collective consciousness to make them possible.Prattis argues that a 'failsafe' is locked away in our mind, a trigger that, when activated, will lead us individually and collectively to great shifts in consciousness and making humankind thereby receptive to quantum changes. He calls this "Failsafe in Consciousness". It has to be accessed by inner reflection, he says, and will produce a "Tipping Point in Consciousness" once critical saturation within the population has been reached.Prattis makes clear that he is not advocating quick fixes of what he considers a broken system. Predictably, he distrusts 'turbo-capitalism' and calls for urgent reform of the world's economic and financial model, but without any ideas of how to do so other than proposing to become more serious in accounting for economic externalities in measuring economic output. The author's skepticism about our current model's ability to reform itself is matched in equal measure by over-confidence in supra-national bodies such as the UN to serve as the catalysts for such change.Prattis is hopeful that the 'Failsafe in Consciousness' will kick in within the next decade, but he also cautions that our entrenched sense of entitlement could cause it not to take hold. Therein lies the fatal flaw of his argument and the title of the book: A 'Failsafe' that fails to activate in an emergency is not much of a 'Failsafe'! Still, the book is a useful read, if not so much as a 'riposte' to the 'Revenge of Gaia' but as a book that makes one think what quantum changes in thinking are required to make a real difference, not just with regard to coming to grips with climate change, but on anything big for that matter.
