By Dr. Research Dr. Frank Baxter and the Bell Science films were very influential to me when I was a student, and set me on a path to a science career. I have wondered for years why no one had done a biography of him. Though a gifted Shakespeare scholar, he changed the American perception of science and scientists. What I did not know was his interesting personal story, and how he influenced all that we now experience in the realm of educational broadcasting. In this work, I also learned things I didn't know about Walt Disney, Frank Capra, Dr. Carl Sagan, and others. (My Amazon name, Dr. Research, was chosen years ago as an homage to Dr. Baxter, by the way!) Well done, and it should be of interest to almost anyone. I think of it as "How a Shakespeare professor got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and changed the world of science."

He was a giant of his time that created an amazing amount of interest in science and literature for the educated slice of society as well as the common viewer. Through his many varied programs, Americans suddenly discovered that Shakespeare was far more than a dusty Elizabethan author and sunspots, language, time, and human biology were interesting and meaningful at a personal level.Dr. Niderost has captured the essence of how this amazing man interacted with the who's who of Hollywood as well as the average television viewer of the time. The content of the book is accurate and does a marvelous job of describing the amazing life of my grandfather.

Like so many other Baby Boomers, the Bell films with Dr. Baxter were such a big part of my life that even now, at age 60, I am often reminded of something that I learned from Dr. Research or Dr. Linguistics. It thrilled me to find the videos on YouTube, and I have been enjoying the nostalgia while I am relearning some of the points I had forgotten. But back to this book, it is clear the author did some extensive research into "Dr. Research," and it has certainly been thoroughly entertaining for me. It's nice to discover that one of the heroes of the 50s-60s classroom was as genuine in real life as he seems to be on film, contrary to the sometimes-depraved nature of the current-day celebrities that our society tends to place on pedestals -- that are so less deserving of the honor than Dr. Baxter. While Dr. B. didn't have an idyllic childhood, we are at least gratified to learn that this is something that, like so many others of the Greatest Generation (my father included), he didn't allow himself to be defined by his youthful difficulties. In a day where the most depraved among us are excused because they had an unhappy childhood, we learn that it is an obstacle that can be overcome and can be turned into a positive force that will affect society for at least a generation if not longer. My wife is an elementary school language therapist. After re-viewing "The Alphabet Conspiracy" on YouTube, I recognized a good deal of the elements of language and linguistics that she had learned in her training of just a few years ago. It may all be old news to linguists, but this training seems to restore so many of the concepts emphasized in the film that have fallen by the wayside in education today.I don't mean to make this about the films; this is a review of the book, so I will end this by saying that I highly recommend this book for anyone, not just those looking for a nostalgia buzz, but for anyone who needs to know the right way to educate.
