Chuck Klein Brings the Past to Vivid Life By Joanne Blum Chuck Klein has the details of the '50s and '60s spot on, so the stories and essays are a marvelous nostalgia trip, and that's a pleasure for those of us, like me, who grew up in that period. But the details are secondary. More importantly, they're absorbed into stories and essays that have a strong narrative drive. Chuck is a master at building momentum. He knows what to tell and how to tell it, when to withhold and when to reveal. And there's more. In the titular first story, in which Chuck, a fierce 2nd Amendment supporter, weaves together, with superb economy, three narrative threads, he shows how guns can lead to devastation. The point is, he's not afraid of telling the truth, in spite of deeply held beliefs. That's one mark of a real writer. One more observation: in Record Run, the third story, he constructs a gripping tale around the lyrics of a popular song, the story and the lyrics mutually enriching each other. He does this in other places, too, with stunning effect. Chuck has written a lovely, highly readable book, one you'll remember.

The Way It Was By Kindle Customer Unlike a novelist, who has the luxury of using as many words as he/she finds necessary to make a point, the short story writer chooses to write under the self-imposed handicap of brevity. The choice and placement of each word is critical to the mood, the story line and to character development. Stephen King once said that he can never manage to write anything that is the right length. His short stories are too long and his novels are too short. Perhaps he should have taken lessons from Chuck Klein. Thanks Chuck, for capturing those days perfectly. David Hardin, writer

As I was reading the different stories, I got so absorbed into each one, that it made me feel like I was really there. Jack Pumphreys pen and ink illustrations are so beautifully done, you can see he has put his heart and soul into each one. Chuck and Jack with both of their talents have brought together a wonderful piece of the past, that I think everyone would love to be a part of. P.S. Mr. Klein is truly bringing back a piece of the past!
