2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A great read By moose A great short read for my taste. The writer has subtly captured the emotions and humour of each character as well as the reader. It's a pity Beni did not have more stories to tell, or maybe we have not heard the last of him.

The author approaches his writing holistically, leaving no subject unturned. It is the interjections of culinary subjects however which seems to give the added flavor to "Universal Soup".Universally diverse human bonds are presented in the series of short stories, all initiated and nurtured by the protagonist, Beni. In his search for his own identity he helps others discover their own.The cultural awareness and appreciation that Beni displays is quite admirable and awesome, especially in light of the stereotype often attached to science based professions.-(matter of fact ). Beni's positive spark imbibes and somewhat intoxicates the reader, leaving him thirsty for more of his endearing encounters.The element of humor is quite real as it speaks to the stereotyping of gender, religion, race, class etc. through the various cultures explored. It somewhat helps the reader recognize that laughing at our differences is quite normal because at the end of the day we are all human. In fact, in pointing out the differences the protagonist, Beni somehow always manages to make a direct link to his "homeland", Trinidad. This makes the reader question if we are actually different at all.The detailing of setting and character is a clear indication of the author's intrinsic relationship with language. The title of the novel is fitting as it offers something for everyone. A must read.
