6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. So many good stories By Cedarlila A wonderful collection of work that shows the true breadth of Hoyt's imagination. Here you will find tales of humanity, monsters who are all-too human, and some who claim human while showing their true colors. From cute kittens that aren't what they seem, to vampires, this is a selection of stories that will pull you in and onward. If you're already a fan of her Darkship world, you will find stories that hold the keys to some of her characters and their motivations in those novels. If you likewry humor, then you will find it in the story of Heart’s Fire, where the young heroine is reading a paperback novel, the key to her downfall. Sarah and I share a love of reading, and furthermore, reading stuff that everyone tells us is trashy and why aren’t you reading works with great and lofty messages?Because sometimes it’s not about the message that blinks and flashes like a giant neon light tearing the quiet night apart. Sometimes it’s about the little stories, the lives of people who work and love and live quietly, never thinking they could make a difference until they have no choice. Because that is a message in itself. Stories give us hope, which enables us to continue. Stories show us how heroism really works, and romance, and all the big things that make us human and keeps us going onward into the future which might hold magic in the form of technology. Or maybe not, it could be things we haven’t even dreamed of yet, writers nor readers.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Well Written Short Stories From the Author of the Darkship series among others By R. D. Hailey Novels and short stories require two very different skill sets. Writing a novel is like juggling. You are frantically moving your hands, trying to keep plot lines, characters, settings and timelines organized over the long haul of the novel. Continuity must be maintained, otherwise you have a naked man putting things in his pockets. On the other hand, a novel gives you space to expand and expound. There's no pressure regarding time and space; you've got pages and pages for development.Writing a short story is more like doing a back flip. You take a few seconds to prepare, find your balance, and plan your arc, and then you take that blind leap of faith. The whole thing is over in just a few moments, but if you do it right, you've done something amazing.Sarah Hoyt writes both novels and short stories and does both well, but this collection is stronger than the two novels of hers I've read in the Darkship series. Don't get me wrong, the Darkship novels are good reads, and the third book is in my To-Be-Read stack, but Hoyt truly shines in the shorter format.The theme of the collection seems to be overcoming obstacles. Even the most powerful people need more than just power to overcome their dragons; they must have the will to succeed and the persistence to keep trying.The collection opens with "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," a story of a family's flight in the night to escape death by an oppressor and ends with "Dragons," a tall tale that would be comfortably told around a campfire, be that fire on Earth or some other planet. Along the way, we visit the fae, vampires, a high school for magic, and other worlds that reflect our own. The settings are distinct rather than generic, as are the protagonists. Whether it is a little boy, a young woman, or the Fairy King, Hoyt tells each tale with an appropriate voice. The little boy doesn't talk like the Fairy King. Stories that stood out for me include the opening tale, "First Blood," "An Answer from the North," and "Angel in Flight." But all the stories are well worth your time to read.This is science fiction/fantasy the way it should be done. The plot and the setting are driven by the SF/F, but the stories are about the characters. Yes, there are some political themes in some of the stories, but the themes are there to drive the story, not replace it with a polemic. And that's the way it should be.

By B Daniel Blatt Reviewing and rate collections of poems and short stories is often a challenge, even when you are a fan of the writer whose work you are evaluating. And I have been a fan of Sarah Hoyt's fiction since I first read an advance copy of her 2013 release A Few Good Men.But, this collection includes not just tales set in futuristic worlds similar to that one with hand-held "burners" (a weapon) and the super strong material dimatough. It also includes stories of vampires, a narrative of a girl enrolled in a high school for students with magic and even one set it fairyland.It concludes with an imaginative dialogue between a crusty old ship's captain, er, pilot on an asteroid miner ship and an aspiring interstellar navigator about legendary beasts, notably dragons and their disappearance from the earth -- and possible reappearance in space.All in all, it's a good collection, though it can be awkward finding yourself leaving one imaginary realm to enter another entirely different, going from fighting vampires to trying to preserve the ancient ways of a fairy realm.And that story, "An Answer from the North" as well as "The Price of Gold" about a boy's disappearance from that magic high school are where (to me at least) the heart of the collection really lies. (And the conclusion of "Whom the Gods Love" was also particularly sweet.) One could almost call the story about the search for the lost boy a meditation on creativity and the challenges creative individuals have as we struggle to realize our gifts.Those two stories alone are more than worth the price of the book. They'll touch your heart--and make you think. And may even put a smile on your face."Heart's Fire" reminds us that sometimes our greatest gifts don't manifest themselves until we meet someone who helps us to draw them out.Indeed, if there is an unifying theme to this collection it is about the power of human relationships to help men and women find their ways in unusual worlds -- or in usual worlds facing unusual circumstances.Which, in some way, is like each of our lives.Summer is now upon us. And this will make for perfect beach or poolside reading. Or perhaps to help comfort you should your town be under attack by vampires. Or cats.
