A peculiar story By TChris A German, at some time in the past, published three novels and two story collections but "the death of the novel and the peculiar state of the short story" sent him into an extended period of (as his female companion describes it) "work adjustment." He is now an "outside creative consultant," a job that requires him to answer an occasional question posed by a consumer researcher.The man and his wife play an odd game. The travel independently, but at the same time, to a city they do not know well. They each spend a few days seeing the sights and looking for each other. They have always managed to find each other but they have resolved that should they ever fail, they will return home separately and go their separate ways.The couple plays the game in a German city. Without revealing what happens, I will say that what happens is probably less important than what we are not told. The story ends abruptly. It is a character study more than anything else. The man and woman are gloomy and ironic but not oppressively so, perhaps because the story is short. While the characters are unappealing and I'm not sure I grasped the story's point (if one exists), I enjoyed reading it because I liked the notion of the game, the descriptive writing style, and the amusing thoughts that bounce through the characters' heads.

Laws of attraction need not apply By Wayne A McCoy 'The Peculiar State' by Patricio Pron, and translated by Kathleen Heil is one of the entries by Vintage in their Vintage Shorts series. In it's few pages, it manages to pack a lot in.A writer who doesn't write is living in Hamburg with his girlfriend, a statistician. She tries to get him to engage in anything. He won't read, and she has a statistic for that, among other things.She decides to come up with a strange game involving travelling separately to a strange city. They can't go to the major tourist spots, and aren't allowed guidebooks. They are just to wander around until they find each other. She keeps stats on this. She begins to wonder what will happen if they don't find each other.There aren't many pages, but I kept thinking about the story after it was over. It's not a fast paced story, but it is a quick read. And yet, there is a depth to it that spoke to me.I was given a review copy of this ebook by Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, vintage, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Hamby In this short but compelling read, Pron gives us a couple experiencing a crises in their union that is of their own making. Pron raises a 'what if' moment that on the surface probably will have the reader thinking about the immediate answers. Followed by some delving into the whys and hows of the entire matter.A rather mundane couple goes about seeking to infuse some adventure as well as bonding through challenge into their satisfied but lackluster married. And the result seems predictable in some regards but takes on a multitude of possible meanings and endings. For me it did.I thought the game they came up with was clever and even fun at first but as the various pitfalls arise and all the questions ti can force one to ask made this short incredibly clever and well worth reading..
