About the Author Luke Echterling is an award winning photojournalist and aspiring fiction author. His short stories include "Wax" and "Electric Funeral with Plastic Flowers" that focus on the relationships between fathers and their sons. In an upcoming work, "Safe," will be the first in a three part book series that will chronicle the violent and strange world of a young man who has the ability to survive billions of years in his search for his stolen mother. Luke Echterling holds a Bachelor of Science in American Studies and spends his time exploring the fringes of culture and the outer sphere of the oddities provided by literature and film. A Quick Read that Feels Like so Much More By Sara I'll be honest, this is not my kind of fiction, so I can't make any author comparisons or witty analogies. But, I went to high school with the author, and I thought, "Let's see what this guy's been up to..." I figured I could read twelve pages of just about anything. And then I was surprised. This short story seems to be so much more. It was a quick read, but not an easy read--and I mean that in the best possible way. Electric Funeral was no fluff piece, but it was not tough to read, unlike some short stories where you feel yourself trudging through the pages. The pace was steady, the characters were well developed, the imagery is great. I loved the writing style. And the story--it was GOOD! In twelve pages, the author manages to create very real characters and describe a complex relationship between a father and a son with some dry humor spun in. We're with the characters a short while, but you'll feel like you've known them forever.

It has some of the quirkiness of Kurt Vonnegut; some of the rapid-fire comedic cynicism of Joseph Heller; a bit of the genuine disenfranchisement of Holden Caulfield a-la-J.D. Salinger; and a bit of Philip K. Dick surrealism. What's not to like?!?!?
