The Needles in the Black Hills of South Dakota are one of the most mysterious and mystical rock climbing areas in the world. Tales from the Edge and the series of short stories called The Needles Saga tells the stories of the larger than life characters that defined the climbing in this amazing region during the 70's and 80's. The stories are based on true events but have been fictionalized to enhance the lore and the magic of the era. The short story Preacher Man transports you to The Needles in the early 80's during a few days when Paul Muehl and Peter Delannoy risked it all to climb Beecher's Balls located deep in the mystical forests of the southern Black Hills. The story is raw and irreverent and for a time the reader will feel the wind in their face and cold sweat on their palms and glimpse a day in the life of a Needles climber.

The nine stories and one poem collected in this volume formed the basis for the astonishingly original film “Short Cuts” directed by Robert Altman. Collected altogether in this volume, these stories form a searing and indelible portrait of American innocence and loss. From the collections Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?, Where I’m Calling From, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, and A New Path to the Waterfall; including an introduction by Robert Altman. With deadpan humor and enormous tenderness, this is the work of “one of the true contemporary masters” (The New York Review of Books).

His characters are typically immersed in the Everyday where the repetitive force of the mundane has them mired in the mechanics of living: House-sitting, birthday parties, beer buddy fishing trips, boredom, initiation of an affair, two pals cruising, looking for a thrill. From these commonplace events, Carver produces stories that are pristine, using language scrubbed clean of verbal theatrics-no show off words, no eccentric constructions - just prose as clean and as spare as Hemingway's and honed dialogue that is simple, but in the way that we say Mozart is simple. The story beneath the undercurrents is what makes Carver so addictive. He describes urges, images, and muted longings that you have always felt, but never could express in words-until now.Take the story "So Much Water So Close To Home." A group of men go on a beer-bash fishing trip. Early into their trip, they discover the body of a nude woman floating face down in the river. The beer buddies figure to keep fishing! Why ruin a good fishing trip? She's dead already, what harm? After all, they're going to notify the authorities, only later, so as not to interrupt having a good time. The beer-induced logic is funny as hell, but the story's neurotic undercurrent explores sloth, inaction and soulless indifference, characters whose actions can only be sanctified after the factors of humanity and decency have been removed from the equation. The wife of one of the beer buddies serves as the story's conscious. When she discovers that her husband drank and fished while a dead body floated downstream, she is appalled, alarmed. To her every accusation of "What kind of man are you to have done this?" Her husband's consistent answer is "She was ALREADY dead." The marital rift over this issue reflects the story's title "So Much Water So Close To Home."These are among the best short stories ever penned. If you enjoyed "The Killers," by Hemingway or any of John Cheever's short stories you will be rewarded by reading Carver.

Raymond Carver is an exceptional short story writer By A Customer Robert Altman made a wonderful film in the 90s based on 9 short stories published by famous American short story writer Raymond Carver. The film was entitled "Short Cuts" and this publication brings together these 9 stories (including a poem) which were culled from several original Carver publications. The book opens with an introduction by Altman who confesses to taking small liberties with Carver's stories and its characters but without compromising their integrity. Those who have seen the movie will concede that the changes in fact give the entity a coherence that would otherwise be missing. But as a collection of short stories. they can and should be read as standalones. Carver is a master of social commentary, using anecdotes of casual human behaviour to capture the absurdity of modern American life. These candid snapshots may not conform with the dictates of conventional fictional writing in that they may lack a beginning, distinct plot development and a neat ending. Often it isn't even the events that trigger off the response of the characters that are significant but the fact that they respond in a certain way that is interesting from the view point of understanding human behaviour. Carver seems to be saying that sometimes the strange things that happen to us are all due to chance and that like it or not, we need to factor chance into the equation of living. As a short story writer, Carver is exceptional. He has that rare ability to communicate some essential truth about the human condition without using melodrama or any of the other techniques frequently used by lesser writers to captivate and sustain our interest. The 9 stories in this collection are individually separate entities which exist in their own right. No character appears anywhere but in the story he originates from. The situations they capture are also pretty diverse. Yet, they don't seem disjointed when you read them in sequence. They are thematically bound together by Carver's magic which may be hard to define but there all the same. I found every one of them absorbing and captivating. Read this first before you watch the movie. You'll enjoy both better.

Still Carver, but not the best selection By Bryan Byrd Raymond Carver's stories are far from universally appealing - my wife hates his style - yet I find many of his stories to be extremely poignant and affecting. For whatever reason, I seem to be very open to the minimalist method he uses to tell these vignettes, or at least I find it very effective at transmitting what I believe to be Carver's aims. The stories in 'Short Cuts', as well as his other collections, are about ordinary people doing ordinary things. There is no weirdness for weirdness sake, no post-modern literary games; Carver examines the absolute commonplace with a microscope. To anyone not familiar with his stories (and even to some that are), one might wonder what possible value that could hold. Yet along with the everyday, there is also some small event that occurs during the story, sometimes something as small as a lost key or as large as stumbling upon a dead body; but something that causes one character to look at their wife or husband and really see them as a person, and not just as extras in their own story. Whether these characters come to know each other in positive or negative ways isn't as important as the idea that they are no longer isolated within themselves - willingly or not they are confronted with the fact that they are part of the rest of humanity. Those are the ideas that I take away from his stories at least. Some stories seem to communicate this better than others, and while the selection included in 'Short Cuts' still reflects what I like about Carver, I found this collection inferior to 'Cathedral', the other book of his stories that I've read. Another problem with this specific collection is that it is made up of stories already published elsewhere - if you decided to buy another collection later, you will automatically be duplicating some of the stories. Better to skip this format and get one of the other collections - you'll still be getting everything that makes Carver Carver, and reduce the chance of 'double-dipping' should you want more.

By Frani Jo I've always been a little scared and timid about using a lot of herbs or spices in my dishes because I didn't really know what would pair well with certain dishes or even other spices. This book helps to quell those nerves and with great detail explains how and what to use.It explains the differences between spices & herbs (like spices tend me more concentrated vs herbs). It also give great tips like how to arrange spices, either alphabetically like most might or by cuisines you would use them in. I liked that is also included how to properly store your herbs & spices and tips on how to grow your own fresh herbs. The following three chapters are separately dedicated to spices, herbs & how to make blends of spices. They each detail on what complements and pairs well with the spices & herbs so you never have to worry if you're making the wrong combinations..definitely a huge relief for me.I think this is a great book for novices & experts and is a definite must have for anybody who loves making tasty home-cooked meals!*I received this book for free for my fair & honest review*

By Heather I love to cook and I love to experiment with flavor profiles but when it comes to herbs and spices I get a little nervous. Why? Because seasoning foods is the easiest way to enhance a recipe or destroy it entirely. I’m often either too heavy handed when added spice/herbs or I don’t add enough and the food ends up tasting bland. Thanks to the Essential Spices and Herbs book, I am hoping this will no longer be a problem … at least after a short period of trial and error. What I love about this book is that it features 50 herbs and spices that the author finds essential for cooking. The author starts by explaining the difference between an herb and a spice and then she provides background information on each herb and spice and how they can be used to improve our lives and recipes. For me, this educational portion of the book was extremely helpful because it gives me a better feel for the flavor profile and what to expect from each addition. The book also contains recipes that are pictured beautifully and give a rustic feel. Then again when I think of herbs and spices I think rustic so I guess the two go hand in hand; at least for me!We have been working on cooking at home more often and whenever possible, cooking from scratch. My hope is that as we venture through the fall months and holiday season that we will put this book to good use and better understand a multitude of herbs and spices by the new year. I’m excited to share this book with my sister who went to culinary school and my husband can’t wait to try a few of the recipes listed, after visiting a local whole food grocer, this weekend! This is a great addition to our kitchen and is perfect for cooks that deem themselves beginners or advanced.Disclaimer: I received complimentary product to facilitate this review. Regardless, all opinions expressed are still 100% my own.

The greatest ghost stories ever written By Robert Moore For several years when she was growing up my daughter and I made a habit of from time to time gathering all the candles we can muster, lighting them, turn off the electrical lights and reading one of the stories in this collection. What Conan Doyle is to the detective story, James is to the ghost story. These are not horror stories. No gore is to be found, no monsters, no savagery. One can find a subtle horror, a persistent sense that there are things in this world that we have either forgotten or never discovered. If one has ever engaged in any historical research on the occult (which I have undertaken as an extreme nonbeliever), one will come across several ancient books and manuscripts in the field that were edited by M. R. James. He was not merely the writer of perfect ghost stories; he was an authority in the field of occult beliefs and practices. This concrete grounding accounts for much of the realistic feel to the researches of many of the characters in his stories.

Joshi Slumming Herein By Severian The stories of Mr. James are above reproach; unique in English literature for being subtle and creepy at the same time and shaped by James' knowledge of medieval history, English history, and the occult. The question for the reader is whether they want to pony up $20 for the Penguin annotated editions of James' tales, as the James repertoire is in the public domain and you could read many of these stories for free on the internet and / or get a $6 copy of the "Collected Ghost Stories" from Wordsworth Press and get 30 out of 33 of the stories featured in the two combined Penguin volumes. So the question then is are Joshi's notes and intros worth about $14?S.T. Joshi is an immensely gifted editor and critic. His studies of the "Weird Tale" are modern classics in the field, and the immense work he has put into his Lovecraft bio and his annotated Lovecraft volumes are a paradigm. There is no doubt that if Mr. Joshi put the full focus of his attention on working with James' material that he could have easily justified the purchase price for these books. Unfortunately, Joshi, for whatever reasons, just went through the motions here and produced a fairly pedestrian work of annotation and criticism to accompany the text.Joshi's annotated Lovecraft or annotated Blackwood (also available from Penguin) are superb works of annotation - each story has copious notes explaining themes and background of the work at hand. In approaching James though, Joshi appears dutiful at best or even bored. Many tales here have less than half a dozen bland notes, and many of the notes are nothing more than scutwork, translations and nutshell bios of historical figure mentioned. This would be fine if James needed no annotation. (But then why buy these books at all?) The true issue is that James' work would indeed benefit from some first grade notes. For instance "The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral" is a story involving an ambitious clergyman who schemes to murder his inconvenient predecessor who is holding him from a promotion. The career of the sinister cleric has many subtle details that point up James' low opinion of him based on his theology and clerical administration policies. For a modern reader who is not fully aware of Episcopalian intra-denominational quarrels in the late 19th Century, knowing this info will add a new level of depth and interest to the story. Instead, Joshi tells us none of this and simply translates a few Latin phrases and fleshes out a few Biblical citations, something the ordinary reader with internet access could do on their own with a $6 copy of the stories. In comparison, Joshi's notes in his annotated Lovecraft for "Herbert West Reanimator" (one of the slightest and most pulpy of fictions in the HPL body of work) are far more detailed, engaging, and affectionate. Now you might say "well who cares about Episcopalian church governance squabbles of the 19th Century?" and indeed the Barchester story works very well even if the reader knows none of the "extrinsic" detail. But yet the entire point of an annotated edition is to add maximum depth and detail to a story for those interested in pursuing such a level of analysis. To provide a minimalist annotation defeats the entire purpose of the endeavor, as the reader may be better served by dispensing with the slight commentary offered and simply reading the work in question cheaply or for free while doing their own cursory research as needed for historical figures, translations, etc.The problem may be that Joshi is well-known for his postulate that a Christian perspective is incompatible with effective horror writing. Joshi is a rather strident atheist and feels that atheism and similar godless perspective make for the most creative and interesting horror. I see his point, but yet the existence of effective horror by pious men like Hawthorne and Montague Rhodes James acts as a counterpoint to Joshi's thesis. This is not to say that Joshi sets out to sabotage James with lame notes - rather it perhaps shows why Joshi viewed this particular exercise as a bore and a task rather than a pleasure.I do not wish to psychoanalyze the editor too much; my theory above may be entirely wrong. However, the heart of the matter is that if we compare Joshi's notes and analyses with James to that on the stories of the pantheistic Blackwood, the existensialist Lovecraft, or the atheist Ligotti, we see that he has done a much better job than here. Maybe this is due to the fact that he finds these others more personally simpatico, or perhaps he simply finds detailed textual analysis of James to be uninteresting. In any case, the ultimate answer to the question of whether a reader should purchase these two volumes of James' ghost stories is probably not. The much cheaper Wordsworth edition (though less aesthetically pleasing) will offer all the pleasures of the original text (or 90% of them anyway), the somewhat cheaper Oxford World Classics Edition though offering only 20 or so tales has a far better intro and notes by Michael Cox, and for the ultimate discount, most of these tales are in the public domain and can be tracked down and read for free over the internet. Joshi, though ordinarily adding enough value to an annotated edition to justify a higher price, has fallen down on the job here and given us a bare-bones minimal effort annotation effort.

Cameron-Singer If you like the style of Victorian ghost stories, in the best English tradition, you'll greatly enjoy this collection of stories by M.R. James, and it's companion volume, Vol. 1. In most of the stories the horror is oblique, but present and able to deliver delicious shivers on dark stormy nights (or on bright, sunny afternoons, for that matter). If you like Arthur Conan Doyle's ghost stories, you'll definitely enjoy this collection.

The man character, Rachel Brodie runs awry and then later in love with her professor who is turns out to be a shape shifting Man/Bear love hunk.It is a pure romance story with all the usual angst but still very fun to read. The characters are well developed and interesting. The conflicts, though based in part by aspects of the supernatural are also grounded enough to reality to keep you interested. It is a well written story and I enjoyed it.

The story was great with several twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the pages. I got the book and didn’t put it down until I finished it. What is a great romance without hot and sexy sex scenes? That’s exactly what this book has. The author uses great descriptive language so it’ like you are watching a movie. “Educated by the Bear” is definitely a great read of the person that loves a great love story. It was a great read, and I look forward to reading other books by Amy.

Camp Admittedly, I am already a fan of M.A. Ray's works, and I can't say I am disappointed in the least with the author's latest efforts. In these two short stories, we delve into a time before the events of Hard Luck and the subsequent stories of Rothganar, and find ourselves faced with a young Eagle Eye Wormsbane, (Voalt Vistridir) and Crown Prince Brother Fox (Bearach). If you love the tidbits of tales that Dingus shares with the Knights of the Air and want to know more about the legends that fill the history of his world, this is a wonderful place to start. The tight dialog, beautiful characterization, and easy, flowing narrative will have you eagerly anticipating getting to know Brother Fox and Eagle Eye even better in the future (but hopefully not too far in the future!).

Five star review, well-deserved, and I'm hooked. Being a long-time friend notwithstanding, I purchased this book, and all the others, and am leaving a favorable review because that's what these stories deserve.

HUBERT GRANICE, pacing the length of his pleasant lamp-lit library, paused to compare his watch with the clock on the chimney-piece. Three minutes to eight. In exactly three minutes Mr. Peter Ascham, of the eminent legal firm of Ascham and Pettilow, would have his punctual hand on the door-bell of the flat. It was a comfort to reflect that Ascham was so punctual—the suspense was beginning to make his host nervous. And the sound of the door-bell would be the beginning of the end—after that there'd be no going back, by God—no going back!

This is a series of short stories taken from different walks of life all ending with a twist similar to what you would expect from reading O. Henry. The author provides the background that places you at the scene of activity; and at the conclusion, requires that moment of thought as human nature unfolds in an unexpected manner. Well worth reading. As a side point, the volunteer committee did an excellent job in consolidating and re-editing this book for publication.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. No twist in these tales By glyn As usual, excellent writing from Edith Wharton. But most of these short stories ended abruptly - there was not a twist to be had as in the O. Henry style that one of the reviewers suggested. Still, worth a read though don't get too involved with the plot because, much as you assume the tale will continue in the next chapter, you will simply find that the new chapter begins an entirely new story altogether. Live with it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wharton but not at her finest By dreaming of the sun If you're a huge Wharton fan like I am then you've probably read all her books. This was the last book by her standing for me and I have to say that while it's okay, that's it. It's just okay. Yes it's supernatural tales by the Queen of Writing (in my opinion) but she could have done better. Sad that she didn't.

The story is about the breakdown of the relationship after the wife miss carries. Clearly the wife is falling into a depression. The problem is the second part of the book which is may be horror /insanity. It's the second part that bothers me about the book. I have vacillated between disliking and liking the story. Therefore I selected okay. I will definitely read more of this author.

Hint at a truth, leave breadcrumbs leading a reader to draw a conclusion or two. But leave it there, so the reader fills out their own nightmare. That's what happened in this tale, let your reader's own imagination run wild.

Italy is experiencing a surge of gastronomic nostalgia, a yearning to recreate and relive the delectable rustic meals of yesteryear, of brimming chalices of wine and sauce-laden pasta. A return to the simple abundance of Italy’s past!

Ah, if only it were true. If there was a glorious yesteryear of Italian feasting, it was enjoyed only by society’s elite. As for standard, rustic fare, such meals bore little resemblance to what is now considered—even in Italy—traditional Italian food.

Determined to uncover the true roots of Italian cuisine and reveal its intriguing yet uncelebrated past, food historian Karima Moyer-Nocchi interviewed Italian "ninetysomething" women from various walks of life, from charcoal-makers to countesses. Her travels spanned from the far north to the deep south, as well as Italy's former landholdings. All of the interviewees had lived through the harrowing years called the Ventennio fascista, the twenty-year reign of fascism in Italy, and were eager to have their final say.

What follows are eighteen remarkable oral narratives, each building upon the last to create a mosaic of Italian foodways, from the fascist era through to the post World War II boom, the “Dolce Vita.” Each woman contributes a recipe chosen specifically to reflect what food was like when she was growing up under Mussolini. The narratives are separated by astringent, yet entertaining essay briefs, illuminating various aspects of gastronomic history and daily life in fascist Italy.

Engrossingly entertaining, Chewing the Fat gently debunks the myths of Italy’s gastronomic nostalgia industry, revealing a culture of food that is surprisingly different from the image most people have of Italian cuisine.

"A remarkable insight into the realities of Italian food. This book lays bare the multiple dimensions of Italian gastronomy: geography, politics, social background, education and economics. It is an eloquent dissection of the nuances of the world’s favorite cooking as well as a magical exercise in memory. A brilliant reconstruction of the kitchens and cookery (and much else besides) of a previous generation."

-Tom Jaine, Food writer, publisher, critic, and restaurateur

Chewing the Fat: An Oral History of Italian Foodways from Fascism to Dolce Vita, by Karima Moyer-Nocchi

Review Chewing the Fat is a step away from the Italian food history we think we know. Moyer-Nocchi artfully combines historical research with oral history to peel away the heroic myths and show the everyday work (and workers) of Italy’s gastronomic past. - Zachary Nowak, Assoc. Director for the Food and Sustainability Studies Program, The Umbra Institute, Perugia

Review This enchanting collection of interviews with very old women, talking at the end of their lives about memories of life and food during the fascist regime, is an evocative yet rigorous examination of traditional Italian gastronomy. Chewing the Fat places these interviews in the context of serious food history and offers a realistic appraisal of what is going on in kitchens and supermarkets today. Gently debunking some of the picturesque and much loved myths about Italian food, the author gives us fresh and realistic insights into the realities and delights of Italian cuisine. Her translation of the interviews is done with affection, tolerance, and generosity of spirit, balanced by informative, astringent commentary and essays, making this far more than a collection of reminiscences. This is a book for all lovers of Italy and its food.” -Gillian Riley, author of The Oxford Companion to Italian Food

I met the author when she came to do her interview. There were many of us in the family who had come to hear my aunt talk about her life during the fascist era. We too were curious to hear her story. The author told us that this often happened when she went to do an interview, that the family members finally managed to take the time to listen to this family elder talk about her experiences. What I wanted to point out in particular in this review is how skillfully the author rendered the interview into the English narration. She really captured the personality of my aunt and I can hear her clearly through the translation. I think the work that Moyer-Nocchi is doing is so very important because we don’t take the time to listen to our elders, and the valuable insight they bring will be lost if no one bothers to go to the time and effort of valorizing and recording their experiences. It is not just about ignoring old people because we are too busy, we ignore that period of time in our past. We just don’t want to know, particularly about people like my aunt, who unfortunately was not contrary to the regime. But her perspective too is part of the collective, and she adds her viewpoint to the overall picture. If you want to get a slice of life picture of Italy’s past that you are not going to get anywhere else or in any other way, this is the book for you.

The author has a great writing style and a brand new idea for understanding not only the Italian farm family's plight under Il Duce, but the migration of the poverty-stricken rural majority to the cities in search of better living conditions.I really enjoyed reading the interviews with these venerable, strong women. I was amazed at their ability to survive as the last in each family to get any kind of nutrition. Not only were they strong, but they also showed great intelligence and perseverance in finding jobs in the face of depressed employment opportunities and indifference to the needs of females in general. Each interview includes a favorite recipe truly indicative of the inventiveness of these women despite the desperate lack of resources. Most of them pooh-poohed the idea that these were actual recipes. Many of them were adamant that they just "cooked". The author includes an intermezzo after each interview expanding on what the interviewee said with facts about the time period and the laws and societal rules in that region at that time.Read this book. You will enjoy it!

A must-read By jennifer Carlisle "This book grabbed my attention in unexpected ways; I found I could not put it down.'Chewing the Fat' is a window on the real world of Italian cuisine--a first hand account of living, eating and surviving in Italy during the fascist Mussolini years, from the mouths of twenty women who lived through them. And it is this which so fascinates in Karima Moyer-Nocchi's admirable work. She has captured the moment via her thoughtful interviews of these survivors, many of whom are now in their nineties, which sets the story straight on this era of gastronomic Italian cultural history, and the mythology around "Italian Cuisine". Moyer-Nocchi realistically illustrates how Italian food during the fascist period was part and parcel of its context, and how that reality sheds light on more than one cultural myth surrounding the origins of Italian food as we know and love it. In her wide-reaching research, Moyer-Nocchi sat face to face 'chewing the fat' with these women, talking and cooking with them from their own recipes, and deliciously serves-up foods and stories of the the town and the country dweller; the privileged and the poor alike. Their stories are their veritable swan songs, captured with heart, and an alert ear to their class and region. Moyer-Nocchi, American-born and living in Italy for the past two decades, translates their accents and dialects with respect to each woman's voice. Her translations resonate with a reverence and rich authenticity, recreating for English readers the flavor of these women's timeless characters. Thoroughly enjoyable, a great read, and a nourishing must-read for anyone interested in food and Italian Culture".

You can read about it here. The titles of these tales give away major spoilers about what happens in them. Ms. Parrish used this same creative technique in her previous anthology, A Is For Apocalypse. Once again I will be referring to the author’s name in this review instead of the titles of their contributions so that other readers will remain just as surprised as I was by what happens in them.Ms. Cleto caught my attention immediately. It was fun to figure out what a Snow Queen with a rare, magical gift could possibly have in common with an ordinary teenage girl like Gwyn. I enjoyed jumping back and forth between their timelines as I attempted to piece all of the clues together. The ending worked particularly well for the short story form due to how quickly the plots were sketched out. This doesn’t happen very often when I read anthologies, but I enjoyed every single selection in this book. Some of them would have worked much better as novellas or full-length novels, though, due to their complicated plots. Ms. Simon and Mr. Fosbury’s piece of fiction was a good example of this. It showed what happened to a village midwife named Hessura after she made a difficult choice for one of the pregnant women she had helped. The premise was fascinating, but the plot simply didn’t have quite enough time to fully develop. As soon as I started reading Mr. Phillips’ entry, I couldn’t wait to discover out what happened next. He described a little girl named Adina who born with an unusual birth defect. Her mother soon figured out how to turn this anomaly into a steady source of income for the family. The character development was incredible, especially considering how quickly the author needed to work in order to pull everything together. I never wanted to stop listening to what Adina had to say.I’d recommend B Is For Broken to anyone who loves contemporary science fiction as much as I do. There is a lot of great material to explore in this collection!originally posted at long and short reviews

By Tabitha Lord B is for Broken is the second installment in Rhonda Parrish's alphabet collection. While the theme of the stories is broader in scope than the first book (A is for Apocalypse), they all have a haunting and darkly delicious quality. A satisfying read...
