My autobiography of working with wildlife in Africa spanning 45 years. Thirty of these years were mainly with captive cheetahs in top breeding facilities. The heartbreak and problems, the laughter and good times when working with such wonderful creatures. From my early days at Edinburgh Zoo, to Botswana, Alaska and back to South Africa. Working with Ostriches, building a crocodile ranch, managing a small game reserve where cheetahs were our specialty Where I learnt their ways and habits and of special friendships bonded with many of the hand raised cheetahs. Rescuing cheetahs from the wilds of Namibia, where they were about to be shot. Releasing cheetahs in trial projects so that when the time came captive born cheetahs could safely be returned to the wild. Working with lions and managing a Zoo. Travelling to meet up with other cheetah specialists and learning from them Life and death within my human and animal friends. So many people and animals with true character, to make you cry or laugh, be proud or sad. Looking at the world today and wondering if our grandchildren will ever be able to experience what Africa is now and what is happening to our disappearing wildlife. .

I evidently had some preconceived ideas about it being quite a serious matter mostly regarding cheetahs and the campaign to prevent their extinction, but I should have looked more closely at the photograph on the front cover- it provides a big clue about Mr. Strachan's sense of humour and his love for animals. This is the very personal autobiography of a born story teller with a great sense of humour, and his irreverence and enthusiasm for poking fun at life had me chuckling from the start. Anyone who enjoys humorous tales, animals or people who chart their own path instead of obediently following rules will like this book, even if he/she has no particular interest in cheetahs or conservation. To be honest, I had thought the book would be more specifically about cheetahs, and of course there were many, many tales of working with these beautiful cats, but it turned out to be much more than that. The first portion of the book is filled with anecdotes of the author's escapades from childhood to his first job with wild animals, and the remainder of the book focuses on his life experiences, both personal and professional, as he worked with animals in various capacities.I found it very interesting to see how attitudes and accepted practices regarding animals have changed in the past decades, and the stories of the author's experiences with an amazing variety of species kept me reading with great interest far into the wee hours. It was also fascinating to read about life in Africa- so different from my North American life.I'd also like to point something out that Mr. Strachan did not draw special attention to: for decades he has played an extremely important role in the effort to save the cheetah (and African Wild Dogs/Painted Wolves) from extinction, and I suspect he has had more firsthand experience with more cheetah than just about anyone else worldwide. Due to ever increasing pressures from mankind, cheetahs remain in grave peril of extinction and Mr. Strachan, at great personal cost and past the age many people retire, continues to work on increasing their odds of survival. I hope his contributions will become more widely recognized during his lifetimeI also hope readers will encourage others to buy this book, and contact Mr. Strachan to find out how to help save this wonderful species. Alan and his wife, photographer and writer, Linda Rosenlof (http://Yourcheetahspot.co.za) working on several projects, including a book and photography exhibit, focusing on cheetah and conservation presentations. I can't think of anyone more well suited for the task; with over 50 years combined experience of working with these cats, Alan and Linda share their enormous knowledge and love of cheetahs in their books and photographs. It would be fantastic if sales of their books could help them achieve their conservation goals.

By Barry Bousfield A great heartfelt and inspiring story of and by a man who was able to do his own wild thing; away from the office and the humdrum of modernity, and who in the process, almost singlehandedly, saved an iconic species of this endangered planet of ours. Couldn't put the book down; learning about the ups and downs of the life, the family and the beloved cheetahs (amongst other animals) of such an unassuming, humble and rare person. An amazing life and feat, told in a 'by the campfire' style of writing. Reminded me of my Gerald Durrell reading days.

Mallery gives a lot of information about squirrel lifestyle, history, trivia and ideas for facilitating squirrel/bird yard-sharing, all in a way that will make make you laugh as much as the squirrels do. There are even recipes for treats. Information AND entertainment!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I THREW THIS BOOK AWAY! By Absinthe Please What can I say? I ordered this book after reading the two 5 star reviews. I even read a brief excerpt of it - it was part of a poem, the poem contained a gross error, but I ignored it...thinking to myself, "It's only a poem, the rest of the book will be correct and informative and funny, just like the reviews said." But I was wrong. The author kept referring to the squirrels...tree squirrels, mind you...stuffing their cheeks with food until their eyes bulged, or words to that effect. Page after page, chapter after chapter, he wrote about the little creatures stuffing their cheeks with food. Except tree squirrels and fox squirrels DON'T HAVE CHEEK POUCHES! Ground squirrels do, but not the little beasties who were so cutely depicted in the book's drawings. And it really, REALLY IRRITATED me: the fact that I knew more about the grey tree squirrels in my backyard than the guy who'd written this book. So I tossed it into our recycling bin. I did NOT want anyone else to be misinformed, so I saw no point in donating the book or trying to sell it in a garage sale.

People at the time were still classifying. Claude Bernard said "experiment," and modern science took a leap forward. For his time, he did significant work on the role of the pancreas in diabetes, mainly because of his experimental method. Everyone needs to read this document (and Claude Bernard can write as well). I was surprised to see it on the free Kindle list, but bravo to Amazon and Kindle for putting it out there.

Ken Mays, author of the non-fiction book “The 4th Reich, Have Nazi Ethics and Tactics Invaded Contemporary America” enters the field of fiction with three stories reminiscent of the type Jack Warner would have made back in the day. Of course I doubt if they would have passed the Production Code of the time. This collection of Drama-Action Adventure tales include… Story-1: “The Mother Road”…California Desert, 1972…“There are a thousand things in the desert that can kill you…now there’s a thousand and one.”…when you put your demons of the past in the dungeon of your mind; it’s best you lock the door to the cage… Story-2: “The Girl in the Shiny New Car”…Detroit, 1933…a story of betrayal and forbidden love set in the midst of the ‘gangster wars’ on the eve of the end to the Prohibition Era… Sory-3: “Jack Schitt”…Austria, May, 1945…a story of personal tragedy and triumph set on the last day of World War Two as O.S.S. operatives liberate the Mauthauson Concentration Camp. These action packed adventures would have been right up Humphrey Bogart’s alley, with a dash of Robert Mitchum or Lauren Bacall thrown in on the side; maybe a little Bill Holden and Brando too… Reader Warning: Adult Content, Language, Rape and Graphic Violence…in short all the stuff that wasn’t allowed in movies back then, but makes good box office now.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. it's fantastic, and I'd love to see more work from ... By Kitty Bronson Incredible! Aghast is an extremely well-written work both from a technical and story perspective, dark and shocking without being crass, and an absolute must-read for any fan of dark fantasy. Set primarily in the modern world (my assumption; the stories are unrelated and veer to different locations and eras), the authors channel the mystique of the impossible and root it so seamlessly into the real world that the stories are almost - almost! - a little believable. Modern witches that masquerade as birds, angels, strange and monstrous things, it's that sort of fare. I also appreciate the number of stories with female leads or from a woman's perspective, when so many works in this genre seem to revolve around gruff, stubbly men who have trust issues. My only complaint is that it doesn't come in a physical edition, which would be a marvelous addition to my bookshelf and would save me the strain of reading on a screen - still, it's fantastic, and I'd love to see more work from these authors! Go buy it!

I made the mistake of flipping through it for the first time late at night when I was starving. I wanted to make everything! What I Love About Domestic ChícIt's Laid Out Seasonally and It's Heavy on the Fruits and VeggiesWhen I read that Kristin's "main philosophy is farm-to-table with a focus on clean ingredients and keeping it simple", it seemed like a book that was right up my alley. We eat seasonally, so I appreciate it when cookbooks are laid out that way (she's even got a produce guide at the beginning of each season so we know what to expect at that time of year). It makes it a lot easier to figure out what to make with the fruits and veggies that we have on hand. We eat a lot of fresh produce, so it's always great to have new ideas for how to use it. There are lots of creative options that aren't just the same old same old dishes. It's Organized by MenuWe love to host dinner parties. So it's great to have menu ideas right at my fingertips. They are listed by theme, but also by season. She's got decor ideas and sometimes even a suggestion for the perfect type of music. I could totally identify with the California Dreamin' menu - I grew up in Ontario, Canada and always wanted to live in California. I would have loved to have a dinner planned around this fabulous state. The PhotographyI'm a sucker for great photos of food. It's inspiring to see food that's styled well plus, I like to get a visual of what I'm making. I'm a lot less likely to try a recipe if there isn't a photo. Thankfully, in Domestic Chíc there is a beautiful photo for each recipe. Some of the Recipes that I've Tried or Can't Wait to TryGarlic Parmesan OlivesThis recipe reminds me of the olives we would eat with a glass of wine while we waited for our food at the café around the corner from our flat when we visited Paris. And even if it didn't, you can't really go wrong with garlic, basil, olives, and Parmesan cheese. ;)Cucumber BisqueI'm always looking for creative ways to use cucumber.Melted Brie with FruitsKristin, you had me at "melted brie".Spinach Spaghetti with Sun-Dried TomatoesI love the simplicity of pasta, tomatoes, and garlic with a few extras like pine nuts, parsley, and good olive oil.Prosciutto and MelonI didn't think I wanted to try melon with anything else, because it's so good on its own. But this summer I've been convinced.Chicken PiccataSince we don't eat a lot of meat, when we do I want it to taste incredible. This sounds like just the dish for our next chicken purchase.Sollenne Family Rice BallsI have a note in my phone to make these soon. They sound amazing!PanelleI love chickpeas, so the idea of using chickpea flour is intriguing. I can't wait to see what this tastes like, and I especially like the suggestion to sandwich it between a baguette. I like almost nothing more than a good baguette with something delicious sandwiched inside.Herb-Baked CauliflowerCauliflower is about to be in season. I can't wait to try this.French Onion SoupSoups are my favorite food to make and eat. And French Onion Soup is one of my all-time favorites. When we visited Paris we made sure to try it as often as possible.Warm Seasonal Vegetable SaladRoasting veggies is my preferred way to eat them. They get a deep, rich flavor like nothing else. I could just eat roasted veggies for a meal and be perfectly content. I like that this recipe instructs you to boil the veggies first. Gives them a head start on the cooking (which is great for root veggies like beets).Clam ChowderWe spent a week of our honeymoon on the coast. Ever since, Clam Chowder has been one of those nostalgic foods that I've always wanted to learn how to make. Now I can.Festive SconesI'm not much of a baker, but scones I can do. These sound like they will be perfect for a cold and cozy morning during the holidays. We'll drink too much coffee and steam up the windows with the heat from the oven, and I'll bet we won't be able to resist a bite while they're still hot from the oven.French Toast Stuffed with Bananas and BlueberriesMy first thought when I saw this was that Tim would love this. I just baked some bread and we have bananas. I have to try it.Lemon PancakesAnything with lemon zest is a winner to me. And pancakes are one of my favorite breakfasts. I love to make a big batch on the weekend and then freeze them for the weekdays. They can be reheated in the toaster oven in no time.Tenderloin with Peppercorn ButterSteak and butter. The end.And now I'm starving.A copy of Domestic Chíc: A Fashionably Fabulous Guide to Cooking & Entertaining by the Seasons was provided by the publisher for this review.

By swaiyer Domestic Chic; the book has 4 chapters divided according to seasons, like winter wonderland, splendid spring, and summer sizzle and harvesting. Then again each chapter has dishes corresponding to events happening in those seasons, like New Year bash or for Valentine there is lover’s delight, for summer there is barbeque dishes etc. Each chapter has detailed menu which you can use to entertain the guest. I liked idea. Also there list of all the produce of the seasons. Whether you are vegetarian or non vegetarian you will find the recipes; also there are bread recipes like panettone, Italian Easter bread. I am looking forward to trying, Lasagna Roll up, Meatless breakfast taco, Asparagus oreganata, Camembert gratin. I found that directions are explained in fewer words, and if you are not familiar you would need to guess the few steps while doing the recipe.I tried Cucumber bisque from this book, it is delicious easy to make, actually it is a chilled cucumber soup. On the whole if you are looking for a book that gives entire menu for the party then buy this book.I received a complimentary copy of book from Waldorf Publishing for this review

We're cooking our way through this right now and I've been thrilled with the recipes so far. It's perfect for entertaining, but also fun for cooking date nights (which is what we've been using it for). Her recipes are easy to make but pack an impressive punch. My personal gold standard of cookbooks is if I would be thrilled to bring it to a party and equally thrilled to eat the dish and this book one on both counts.

Homes has unveiled with great élan the frightening underside of suburbia. The characters run the gamut from a disappointed pedophile to a lascivious obese girl, from a responsible mother gone wild on a weekend away from her children to a teen boy who becomes strangely attracted to his sister's Barbie. However, revealing any more about these stories would be unseemly, as the degenerate twists are part of their seductive powers.Despite the shocking premises, the basic situations and feelings evoked are often universal - making this book a somewhat uneasy read. The reader does not want to identify with these characters, but Homes, with laser-like precision, forces the reader to just such apperception. Reading "Safety of Objects" left me alternately paralyzed with laughter and oddly nauseous - a true mark of genius! This book is the first I've read by Homes, but I'm already eagerly anticipating the next.

Homes has painted a dark and bizarre picture of suburbia, knocking down that whole fantasy of how the suburbs are pure and clean. She has put together a twisted collection of stories that are subtle, outrageous and downright disturbing. This is not an easy read for those who have weak stomachs or are extremely sensitive. However, if you're looking for something a little more darker and sinister, "The Safety of Objects" just might be the thing for you. When you think of "suburbia," you think of somewhere that is safe, quiet, boring and normal. These stories take place in a neighborhood that could very well resemble somewhere where YOU live. The truth is that this "normal" neighborhood is contaminated with bizarre behavior and unbelievable stories. There's the couple who decide to do drugs when their kids are away from home. There's the kid who was abducted by a kidnapper, only to end up being a big disappointment to the abductor. There's the mother with the son that is in a coma after a car accident, and she doesn't know what should be done. And let's not forget about the little boy who has an extreme obsession with his sister's Barbie doll. These are only some of the stories you will uncover in this unrelenting and unapologetic read.Homes has a great way of getting straight to the point without using any extra or unnecessary words. Her writing reminds me a little of Raymond Carver, only more twisted and graphic. She's able to create some very interesting and creepy characters without having to give you their complete life story. While there are some stories that I like more than others, I found myself enjoying the entire book. Just when I thought I had read some pretty twisted and disturbing stuff, I started to realize that I hadn't seen nothing yet after I started reading this book.I cannot stress this enough; this is NOT recommended for those who are extremely sensitive and get offended easily. These stories are dark, graphic and unforgiving. Some stories aren't as extreme as others while there are some that'll make you feel downright guilty for reading. I had a hard time reading some of these stories, but A.M. Homes' craft is done so well that you can't help but continue reading. People who like Chuck Palahniuk are bound to get a kick out of these stories. My favorite stories in this collection are "Looking for Johnny," "Jim Train," "The Bullet Catcher," "Esther in the Night," and everyone's favorite cult classic, "A Real Doll," which is the funniest and most deranged story in the entire collection."The Safety of Objects" is a humorous and chilling read that you will have a hard time forgetting. It's great to see something that is supposed to be viewed as innocent such as "suburbia," and see it transformed into something much more sinister and terrifying. If you're a fan of the short story and aren't afraid to venture into some of the darkest and tragic corners of fiction, then this is something you should consider picking up. I will never forget these stories. They are forever imprinted into my brain. -Michael Crane

This book in particular, is so rich and luscious with naughty details that you know you should not be reading about (or enjoying) that it glues your eyes to the pages. They are dense-poetic stories that leave me feeling like I know the characters - in only a matter of pages. In some instances - the stories were so realistically told - that I felt the heat of the summer - or new exactly what the character was feeling. Anyway - all I can say is that this book lead me to read "Music for Torching" which is a REAL account of suburban life (more than any other) that is also naughty but true and then to "Jack" which was a little less interesting. A.M. Homes novels are like a piece of candy that is Ruby Red, very sweet, sometimes sticks to your teeth, but makes you crave another. Pure indulgence.
