By dltd The setting of post civil war New Orleans provides an almost otherworldly backdrop to the story of young Lalin Pasquet and her mother, Clemence, a beautiful, quadroon prostitute who's clients include some of the wealthiest, most powerful men of New Orleans. There is no doubt that Clemence expects her daughter to follow her profession. 'From a young age, Lalin accompanied her mother to private revels where there were no wives or other children, and strangers would clap their hands and exclaim over the child's developing beauty--her tiny hands, soft lips, and fair hair... and they would pinch her cheeks while her mother stood by, flushed and smiling.'But Lalin's desire to find her father, along with a little bit of magic, take the reader in an entirely different direction than expected. This dark tale is richly told and I was hooked from beginning to end. My only complaint--I wanted to keep on reading when the story was done.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Magical story By Liz Marshall This is the second short story I've read by Mr. Waid, and I am hoping he comes out with a book of them. His language is rich, his characters fleshed out, and no detail is too small to be lovingly lingered over and brought to life. And yet, the story moves at a good pace. It goes to unexpected places, and we must hold our breaths and follow along. In this story, a young girl leads a pampered, happy life when her high-class prostitute mother is in a good mood, and takes her to soirees where she is made much of, and given gifts. When her mother is not so happy, the girl, Lalin, is insecure and misses her father. The maid, who is much more than a maid, gives Lalin a piece of magic, and it is a testament to this writer's skills that this doesn't seem strange. Trust me on this, take a leap of faith, and read this story.

The historical New Orleans setting is descriptive without being overly detailed to where you want to skim. The author paints a wonderful picture.I instantly felt connected to La, the main character. Her journey from thinking her life idyllic to learning the reality was touching and tragic.Very well written. Can't wait to read more.
