I’ve always liked short stories, short shorts, and flash fiction. The investment of time is on the briefer side, and often just as rewarding as a novel. I’ve penned a few, myself, and selected my personal favorites, including a couple of flashes. All the selections involve murder, suspense, surprise or chicanery. Some stories have pretty unlikely heroes, such as an English bulldog named Jemma. Some learn and grow, some go to jail, some die, some profit from other people’s villainy. The common thread is their humanness, even the dog’s. I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Corliss and Other Award Winning Stories, by Heather Haven

About the Author After studying drama at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida, Heather went to Manhattan to pursue a career. There she wrote short stories, novels, comedy acts, television treatments, ad copy, commercials, and two one-act plays, produced at several places, such as Playwrights Horizon. Once she even ghostwrote a book on how to run an employment agency. She was unemployed at the time. One of her first paying jobs was writing a love story for a book published by Bantam called Moments of Love. She had a deadline of one week but promptly came down with the flu. Heather wrote "The Sands of Time" with a raging temperature, and delivered some pretty hot stuff because of it. Her stint at New York City’s No Soap Radio - where she wrote comedic ad copy – help develop her long-time love affair with comedy. So far, she has written four novels in the humorous Alvarez Family Murder Mystery series. The first, Murder is a Family Business, was winner of the Single Titles Reviewers’ Choice Award 2011. The second, A Wedding to Die For, received the finalist nods from both Global and EPIC’s Best eBook Mystery of the Year, 2012. The third of the series, Death Runs in the Family, received the Gold for Best Mystery Fiction 2013. The fourth book, Dead…If Only, was released October 13, 2014. Books one and two of the Persephone Cole Vintage Mysteries,, The Dagger Before Me, Iced Diamonds, and the soon-to-be-released The Chocolate Kiss-Off are centered around one of Manhattan’s first female detectives (Sam Spade with lipstick) during WWII. Death of a Clown, winner of the Silver IPPY for Best Mystery/thriller 2014, is a standalone mystery noir, which takes place during the golden age of circus life of the forties.

Goldberg Heather Haven is renowned for her mysteries, so rich in character, setting, snappy dialogue, and deliciously arch humor. Now we get to meet Heather as a short story writer, and it is a delightful meeting. This is truly a box of confections. Each story is a delicious surprise, from the flash fiction to the more developed works. I can only wish it were longer, and happily hope for more to come.

Instantly drawn into another time and place By Kemberlee Lugo Shortland I picked up this book because I'm such a fan of Heather Haven's Alvarez Mysteries, and this story was labeled 'A Short Humorous Suspense Story.' I was just going to take a brief look before bed and ended up staying up until I'd finished. This story is a far cry from the Alvarez Mysteries. And I wouldn't call any of it humorous. This is as serious as it comes. The voice in this story is unique and distinct. I was instantly drawn into another time and place. Another culture. Corliss is a product of her social class, a woman who's had a mix of lucks in her life. But she's smart and learns to stand on her own two feet, even if it means sacrifices. This is as much a tale of love as redemption. This is a tale well-told tale with understanding and empathy. A must read!

I still have a collection of short stories from grammar school that is tattered and torn from rereading. Corliss struck me the same way. To so quickly get inside a character to the point where you think you could recognize him or her on the street, live a vignette or longer in the life of that character, and have that character stay with you to the point where you want to know more is a magical talent. Heather Haven has given me another book to reread until it's tattered and torn.I love the Alvarez mysteries, but these stories have a charm that even wild, sophisticated, glamorous Lee Alvarez can't duplicate (I can't even picture Corliss ever owning a pair of high heels.)Thanks, Heather, keep them coming!

The Korean Table: From Barbecue to Bibimbap 100 Easy-To-Prepare Recipes, by Taekyung Chung, Debra Samuels

From Publishers Weekly Cooking school teachers Chung and Samuels offer an alluring array of Korean recipes designed for the Western kitchen. As an added bonus, the authors delve into the history of the cuisine, including the importance of balance in taste and color, medicinal qualities of ingredients, and construction of the typical Korean family meal. They also include a lengthy section introducing the reader to common ingredients of the cuisine. The dishes, some traditional, some modernized for contemporary tastes, are what the authors call a starter kit: the building blocks essential to Korean cooking. Staples include Kimchi Paste, Soy Scallion Dipping Sauce and a collection of homemade stocks. Because Korean meals often include a minimum of five dishes, recipes are quick and accessible. Some, such as Korean Dumplings, include handy sidebars with instructions on technique. Others, such as Asparagus Salad, Korean Hot Wings, and Stir Fried Beef with Vegetables clearly appeal to the American sense of familiarity, albeit with a Korean flair. For the more adventurous, recipes such as Roasted Corn Tea, Kimchi Soup, and Warm and Spicy Squid Salad are sure to appeal. Complete with full-color photos throughout, this collection offers a welcome and undaunting introduction into Korean cuisine. (Oct.) It's rare that I want to make every recipe in a cook book, but that's the case here. I wanted to learn about Korean food and, living in Los Angeles, I have access to a rich, authentic Korean community. I use this book to guide me in Korean markets. The recipes are easy to follow, they always work and they're very tasty. For anyone who wants to expand their cooking repertoire to include this great cuisine, I recommend this book. (Also, compared it to others in the library and this was my favorite.)

Good for beginners, but not very authentic recipes By Melo After reading the reviews on most of the Korean cook books available on Amazon, I decided to go with this one. I'm a Korean American born and raised in Texas marrried to a Korean man born and raised in Korea. Needless to say, I found the need to learn how to cook more Korean dishes. I had a couple of recipes up my sleeves already, but that obviously wasn't going to be enough for a man that was going to be missing his homeland food terribly now that he's living in Houston. Yes, there are a few very good Korean restaurants in Houston, but we can't be eating out all the time! I was hoping this book would be perfect for a novice like me, but I ended up being quite disappointed. The illustrations are great, but the recipes are not all the most authentic. Some of the dishses my husband had never even heard of. Many of the recipes seem to be "westernized." I still think this would be a great book for a beginner, but not for someone who is looking for authentic Korean recipes.

Attractive, user friendly, and practical even for busy cooks By Lynn Harnett The basics chapter, which kicks off this attractive and practical book, is a confidence booster. Simple base sauces and spice pastes which last for months allow the home cook to whip up kimchi or mouthwatering barbecue at a whim (plus a day for marinating).A sample meal might include Barbecued Ribs or Hot Wings or Whole Baked Fish (simply seasoned with Red Pepper Paste, made ahead and handy in the fridge) or Kimchi Hot Pot; Cucumber and Grilled Eggplant (pan-fried eggplant with raw cucumbers in a soy-scallion sauce), or Seasoned Bean Sprouts; Potato and Basil pancakes (also served with soy-scallion dipping sauce) or Kimchi Pancakes; Sticky Rice with Dried Fruit and Nuts, or Korean Fried Rice; and Garden Ripe Tomatoes Drizzled with Honey for dessert.Organized by course, using ingredients found in the local grocery and accompanied by luscious photographs, these 100 recipes are easy and exotic, many taking only a few minutes to prepare. A user-friendly introduction to a lively cuisine.

Best PDF Ebook The Reflection of Life: Functional Entailment and Imminence in Relational Biology (IFSR International Series on Systems Science and Engineering), by A. H. Louie

A. H. Louie’s The Reflection of Life: Functional Entailment and Imminence in Relational Biology is a continuation of the exploratory journey in relational biology which began with his 2009 monograph More Than Life Itself: A Synthetic Continuation in Relational Biology. The theme of his first book was ‘What is life?’; the theme of this sequel is “How do two life forms interact?” Biology is a subject concerned with organization of relations. Relational biology is the approach that advocates ‘function dictates structure”, rather than ‘structure implies function’. It is mathematics decoded into biological realizations. The book demonstrates some of the powers of the approach of relational biology, and illustrates how pertinent problems in biology can be better addressed this way. In the first volume the theory was developed by using partially ordered sets, lattices, simulations, models, Aristotle’s four causes, graphs, categories, simple and complex systems, anticipatory systems, and metabolism-repair [(M,R)-] systems.

Here in the second volume, these tools are expanded to employ set-valued mappings, adjacency matrices, random graphs, and interacting entailment networks. The theory of set-valued mappings culminates in the imminence mapping, which equips the further  investigation of functional entailment in complex relational networks. Imminence in (M,R)-networks that model living systems addresses the topics of biogenesis and natural selection. Interacting (M,R)-networks with mutually entailing processes serve as  models in the study of symbiosis and pathophysiology. The formalism also provides a natural framework for a relational theory of virology and oncology.

This book will serve researchers and graduate students in mathematics and biology.

About the Author Dr. Aloisius H. Louie is a mathematical biologist. His 1981 PhD thesis topic was on the abstract formulation of categorical system theory in biology. Robert Rosen, then Killam Professor of Biomathematics at Dalhousie University (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada), was his mentor. His other degrees are BSc (1978, Honours Mathematics and Biology) and MA (1979, Pure Mathematics) from the University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario, Canada). Dr. Louie's research subjects have encompassed abstract formulations, mathematical modelling, and computer simulations of various natural and physical phenomena, including dynamic behaviour of protein molecules, enzyme-substrate recognition, processes of irreversible thermodynamics, human-pollutant interactions, the cell biology of senescence, and electromagnetics. His premier interest, however, remains the epistemological aspects of mathematical biology.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Ontology and Imminence By T. Gwinn As the author states, this book is 'Opus II' to his 'Opus I', his previous book, More Than Life Itself: A Synthetic Continuation in Relational Biology (hereafter 'ML'). As in my review of ML, I consider this book as required reading for any reader of Robert Rosen's Life Itself or anyone interested the question "what is life?".Although a brief intro to relational biology is provided in the Exordium, ML is definitely a prerequisite read for this book. Otherwise, some of the discussions may be difficult to follow. Stylistically, this is similar to ML insofar as the reader is first treated to a brief course in the "tools" needed for the ensuing discussions, including set-valued mapping and adjacency matrices. These tools are then used in the discussions of functional entailment and imminence.Relational biology is the study of functions and their interactions, rather than studying the particular physical realizations. Modeled as set-valued mappings, functions can entail other functions which can, in turn, entail still other functions. This functional entailment is imminence, and is central to the book. Indeed, from imminence the near certainty of the genesis of life very neatly arises. I cannot do justice here to a detailed description or the import of this concept.Following these discussions, Louie then turns to the interactions between (M,R)-networks, including discussions of virology, symbiosis, natural selection, biogenesis, pathophysiology, oncology and more. These demonstrate the utility and elegant power of relational biology. Some may find these models too elegant; that is, too abstract or "simplistic". However, the argument from the relational biology perspective is that there is no coherent reason to judge the models based on their lack of difficulty or messiness. As Louie remarks: "I wonder how people can appreciate the ontological beauty of nature but then insist on its epistemological ugliness."As with ML, the reader should expect a deeply mathematical treatment which will require studious attention. It is well worth it.Table of Contents================Exordium: An Introduction to Relational BiologyProlegomenon: CardinalisPART I - Pentateuchus: Becoming Mapping 1) Mapping Origins 2) From Points to Sets 3) Principles of Set-Valued Mappings 4) Censusing Independence 5) Set-Valued Mappings ReduxPART II - Functional Entailment 6) The Logic of Entailment 7) The Imminence Mapping 8) Imminence of Life 9) Imminence in ModelsPART III - Interacting (M,R)-Networks 10) Connections 11) Symbiosis 12) Pathophysiology 13) Relational Virology 14) Therapeutics

Robyn does an amazing job of educating - with understandable words, fantastic photos, and ESPECIALLY communicating the nuances - it can be tricky with food - and I love that she takes that part so seriously so that the user has good results and a good experience. The I've tried a few of the recipes so far and they have been wonderful - *very* hard not to eat the entire plate of mushrooms stuffed with garlic-herb goat cheese! Not to mention - aesthetically, it really is such a beautiful book!

Not only does the book serve up some sensationally fine culinary delights By Chris Kilham The Cannabis Kitchen Cookbook sets a high bar, quite actually, in the culinary arts. Not only does the book serve up some sensationally fine culinary delights, but the added benefit of enhancing one's brain soup with cannabis adds greatly to the overall delectability of the dishes. Robyn Griggs Lawrence is at once funny, well informed, a wonderful writer, and an enthusiast of the new era of fine cannabis cookery. Gone are the days when eating a pot brownie meant a mouthful of hay. With its oils and various superb preparations, The Cannabis Kitchen Cookbook hits the absolute sweet spot in this emerging field of cookery. Bravo, Robyn. Bravo.

By K P Wow....totally unexpected in the best way possible/ I had expected recipes, but was not expecting the awesome overview on a rapidly new legal industry. The author has managed to take the guess work out of all of the new products and general information needed to navigate ones way through this process. I love that she talks very clearly on infusions, tinctures, oils, buyers guides, butters, etc. Probably most importantly, a clear explanation on how to buy, and what to look for. .This book offers a very special service to new medical cannabis users, that to my knowledge, has not been available before. It is a great primer for all individuals that are new to this changed world. A special bonus is not only the great information, but also wonderful sounding recipes with great photos.

High above the city, on a tall column, stood the statue of the Happy Prince. He was gilded all over with thin leaves of fine gold, for eyes he had two bright sapphires, and a large red ruby glowed on his sword-hilt.

About the Author Known for his barbed wit, Oscar Wilde was one of the most successful late-Victorian playwrights and a great celebrity. The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray are among his best known works. He is perhaps most famous for his trial, in which he eloquently defended homosexual love and was sentenced to two years of hard labor.

An Entirely Different Side of Oscar Wilde By Barbara Fox This collection - one of thousands of worthwhile 'freebies' available for Kindle - offers a side of Oscar Wilde unknown to those who've only experienced his witty, cynical plays. These 'fairy tales' are gentle, moralistic, and only sometimes sardonic. I downloaded it in order to have my favorite of Wilde's short stories, "The Selfish Giant", which blends children's fantasy with Christian iconography in a charming, emotionally affecting way. Now I've read them all and I'm glad I have the set. This also led me to download another freebie, "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime", also recommended.

My imagination soared with his descriptions of life, and my eyes overflowed with tears at each story. The record of the Happy Prince was read by Bing Crosby and Orson Wells and each year at Christmas we still play that old scratched thing, just to hear it's wonderous love story and that of The Selfish Giant. Now I have to get the book so my nieces and nephews will share in my treasures of love!!!! What is this world if it isn't all about Love?

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Nine lovely, tragic tales By A Customer I am no expert on Oscar Wilde, but I've been reading fairytales long enough to be able to tell the difference between an enchanting story and a bunch of pap. The nine magically airy yarns in this small collection are definitely in the first category."The Happy Prince" and "The Selfish Giant" are perhaps the most famous of the nine. In the first story, the golden statue of a prince weeps for all the suffering people he sees and begs a swallow to strip him of his riches and distribute them to the masses. In the second tale, a giant builds a wall around his beautiful garden to keep out the noisy children, only to find out that he has also locked out the Spring."The Young King" is a variation on the theme of "A Happy Prince". When a young monarch learns of the suffering and misery caused by his requirement for a robe, a crown, and a sceptre, he refuses to handle any of these riches and is given a more fitting raiment by a Divine Power. Keeping with the royal theme is "The Star-Child", about a beautiful but horrible young boy whose physical appearance grows to match his ugly spirit. Another little bird appears in "The Nightingale and the Rose", to help a young man win the heart of the woman he loves. The stories' themes include beauty, tragedy, agony, compassion, innocence, and (Platonic) love. Some characters give their lives, or sell their souls, in the name of love. There are also the same archetypes that appear in dreams: the Divine Child, the Trickster, the Wise Old Man or Woman, the Number 3, and more. Add all this to Wilde's delicate writing and gilded imagination, and you get some of the most original tales ever written.Though most of these stories end happily, all end tragically. That is to say, even when the endings are happy, someone always dies. Each story manages to associate everything thrilling and exquisite about beauty with the starkness of death. Accordingly, not all of these tales are suitable for children. For example, one scene in "The Fisherman and His Soul" features witches dancing before the devil and the princess in "The Birthday of the Infanta" is a heartless child whose mockery leads to the death of a little dwarf. Though the stories are moral at the core, and often explicitly Christian, they do not always make sense.Despite the faults, the keening, poignant loveliness shines through, making me want to read each story again and again and again.

It's a good thing it doesn't cost anything. However, it would be helpful if Amazon would label the book as "Abridged" because that's exactly what it is. Material has been removed. The Kindle edition is not the book that was published in print.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Very good classic book. By Heather Good classic book. I knew alchemists were crazy but I didn't know the half of it until after I finished the book. I like the fact that he went into detail as to why they thought the world worked as it did. It very thoroughly explains it.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A cool read By Greg A concise history of Alchemy and its transition to chemistry written from the point of view of a scientist at the turn of the 20th century. It gets a bit condescending, but at the time the book was written chemists and physicists had a lot going for them, so its somewhat understandable. The original book was written just 4 years after the discovery of the electron, and the 1913 revisions were made just before the Bohr Model of the atom was theorized. Very cool read and a must for any chemist, physicist, and materials engineer!(If you want the figures, download the free copy from Project Gutenberg)

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Clever, fun story with a twist By amtmcm Though you may or may not figure out the plot twist, it's a fun story. Who wouldn't want to be woo'ed and made to feel special and desired? It's fun to read about a heroine being swept off her feet.Major SPOILER for those who are doubting you want to read this book.....The last question in the synopsis is misleading (will she have to choose....) and initially made me doubt I'd want to read this. The summary should just end with the statement " she cannot say no to this fascinating man." The heroine does not commit adultery. I knew how the story was going to go after reading the first page because I read a similar short story by Michelle McMaster called Lady Ashton Takes a Lover in her Summer Passions (Seasons of Love) collection. But this story is a bit longer and has more plot.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. read the whole book - contains spoilers By Amazon Customer This was a nice story that kept me interested. However, if I hadn't have guessed the twist at the end from other reviews (she has the "affair" with her husband, Lord James Sherwood) I don't think I would have finished it. I would have detested the heroine, Julia. As it was, I think for the time period it was believable. There were times I wanted to yell, "It's okay to love your husband and let others know you do!" but again, for the time, everything was believable. Also, the fact that the couple already had a child, yet Julia didn't really know passion made me think less of her husband, but he does finally redeem himself with their affair in London. If it weren't for those two minor issues I would have given it 5 stars. I know though, that if those issues weren't there then the whole plot of the book couldn't have even happened, but it did keep me from absolutely loving the characters and the book as a whole...whether or not that really make sense or is fair to the author haha

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fun.......and startling! By lark Really startling! Truly startling!Hated the heroine through most of the book...wanted to smack her. (But I definitely got over it. You will too:)This simply can't be reviewed in the ordinary sense. Very well written. Anything else said will be a spoiler.I will definitely re-read this! lol***Read this with a completely open mind or you'll have to re-read, too! Regardless, it's an entertaining story to revisit:)

I am a single person so I need recipes that are small or can be easily frozen for later. I found many recipes that fit the bill. There is a big variety to choose from each day!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Yummy Cookbook By S. Hansen What a nice cookbook. It just arrived and we made the Skillet Apple Pie. Ooooh my.........amazing pie and easy to make. If I don't make anything else, the book has already paid for itself in yumminess. The recipes seem to be updated versions of some old favorites and appear to be relatively easy with hints and suggestions to make something good...better.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I like it. By reg I have been cooking for several trainers lately. One-dish meals are the easiest to take to them, so I decided to get this cookbook. I have used two recipes from this, so far, and both were hits. I made the Southwest Lasagna and the Chicken with Wild Rice and Pecans. I know I will be making them again and will be trying other recipes I have flagged as having potential. I have some books I find very few things to even consider, so I consider a book a success when I have flagged at least 8 recipes. I may find even more when I go through it again.

Free PDF Ebook Hypothetical Thinking: Dual Processes in Reasoning and Judgement (Essays in Cognitive Psychology), by Jonathan St. B. T. Evans

Hypothetical thought involves the imagination of possibilities and the exploration of their consequences by a process of mental simulation. Using a recently developed theoretical framework called Hypothetical Thinking Theory, Jonathan St. B. T. Evans provides an integrated theoretical account of a wide range of psychological studies on hypothesis testing, reasoning, judgement and decision making.

Hypothetical thinking theory is built on three key principles, implemented in a revised and updated version of Evans' well-known heuristic–analytic theory of reasoning. The central claim of this book is that this theory can provide an integrated account of some apparently very diverse phenomena including confirmation bias in hypothesis testing, acceptance of fallacies in deductive reasoning, belief biases in reasoning and judgement, biases of statistical judgement and a number of characteristic findings in the study of decision making. The author also provides broad ranging discussion of cognitive biases, human rationality and dual-process theories of higher cognition.

Hypothetical Thinking draws on and develops arguments first proposed in Evans’ earlier work from this series, Bias in Human Reasoning. In the new theory, however, cognitive biases are attributed equally to analytic and heuristic processing and a much wider range of phenomena are reviewed and discussed. It will therefore be of great interest to researchers and post-graduates in psychology and the cognitive sciences, as well as to undergraduate students looking for a comprehensive review of current work on reasoning and decision-making.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Exemplar of bias against the value of System 1 processing By T Crichton Unfortunately, 'Hypothetical Thinking' serves to further devalue the long-ignored, and crucial role, of abstract-associative processes in human thought, and reasoning. Evans main motivation with this work, is to suggest that major relevance of 'system 2' processing in hypothetical thinking. Though he is carefully manipulative in his presentations, a bit of analysis reveals that his argument falls short of 'rational'. Evan's strategy is to discuss what he calls 'hypothetical thinking' in a context which is consistent with his arbitrary 'mental model making', thereby tautologically limiting the notion of 'hypothetical thinking' to the STM/Working memory complex (which is essentially what he implies to be 'System 2'). With his version of 'hypothetical thinking' established, Evans can avoid the contribution of associative-heuristic processes towards 'hypothetical thinking' , as it relates to the generation of hypotheticals, in describing (even partially) associative-based phenomena. For example, in proposing some general and 'probable' explanation to DOG --> 9 LIVES. Which, in this case, under the general form, A ---> B can result in the suggestion of the hypothetical A ---> Superstitious quality(Probabilistic Opposite (A)). Evans, essentially avoids the indisputably ubiquitous role of idea generation (system 1 process), in the design of hypotheticals. Of course, System 2 will ultimately be involved in the design of all hypotheticals (in some almost exclusively), it almost literally, can't think outside of it's own box. Certainly, any reasonable person can see, that there are more 'ifs' that can be generated via the assistance of long-term-memory (System 1), than can be generated through our limited working memory system (System 2), alone. And while logic certainly, has a role in hypothetical thought, I'm sorry to report that this book is another attempt to confine human ingenuity to purely logical (or perhaps pseudo-logical) STM/Working complex, and it is disrespecting to both the hypothetical and creative processes. There is a good reason that associative memory correlates (which Evans tends to imply, do not) highly with general intelligence. Maybe "IF" Evan's had a premise that wasn't as partial, his position would be plausible.Of course, dual process models are all highly arbitrary constructs, but if one must bear to stand dual process, I would look into other accounts.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great collection of stories! By osnat faliks I really enjoyed this book, particularly the short stories "New York City Marathon", "Liquid Calling", and "Black Eye Susan." I had been following Devon's website, [...] the past year, where he blogs about his ambitious goal of writing a short story every two weeks for an entire year. Not only did I enjoy the stories, but found the blog about his experiences to be funny and witty. I could relate to many of his stories, being from the NY/NJ area, and would highly recommend this book. It's a refreshing read with well-drawn characters and interesting dialogue. Hope to see more from this author.

There is a wonderful inner layer to these stories that seems to shine through a tasteful glass of good whiskey, keen observation and sardonic laughter. The boys are on a night out while the girls play with soured experiences. This is a great read for the New Yorker who knows the sounds of late night side streets and the silences of apartment living. Wishing it was not so, wishing that it was so within a new existential stance not far from the deep river waters on both sides of Manhattan Island. Don't skip any of the stories they hold together and leave you with a feeling of having sat on the stoop all night. Enjoy the passing view.
