The Girl with the Golden Eyes - La Fille aux yeux d'or by Honore De Balzac. Translated by Ellen Marriage. La Fille aux yeux d'or (English: The Girl With the Golden Eyes) is a novella by Honore de Balzac. It is the third part of the Thirteen series, which includes the short stories Ferragus and La Duchesse de Langeais. It is also part of his La Comedie humaine novel sequence. The story follows the decadent heir Henri de Marsay, who becomes enamored of the titular beauty, Paquita Valdes, and plots to seduce her. He succeeds but becomes disillusioned when he discovers she is also involved with another lover and so plots to murder her. When he arrives to kill her, he discovers that she is already dead by the hand of her lover, his half-sister. She declares that Paquita came from a land where women are no more than chattels, able to be bought and used in any way. In the last lines of the story, de Marsay laughingly tells a friend that the girl has died of consumption.

About the Author Honore de Balzac (20 May 1799 – 18 August 1850) was a French novelist and playwright. His magnum opus was a sequence of short stories and novels collectively entitled La Comedie humaine, which presents a panorama of French life in the years after the 1815 fall of Napoleon Bonaparte.

It held my interest right until the shocking ending. Even in translation Balzac was a superb stylist: I would say he was arete (Greek excellence) that puts him into the highest category of novelists who also reveal truths about human behavior. I highly recommend this novella. Also I would recommend Camille Paglia's discussion of Balzac. Reynold Spector

Hilburn The Girl with the Golden Eyes is filled with murder, lust, passion, and greed spawned straight from 19th century France. The beginning of the book starts out with a long description of the Parisian society but if you can make it through that you're "golden."
