It has no memories, no feelings and no connection to the outside world. But as it begins to develop thought, its creator realizes what he has truly brought into this world. Bravo, Mr. Howey. You have once again treated me to a story in which I was fully immersed and I loved it.

I liked the concept; self awareness is a terrible thing. But I do wonder, would self awareness manifest in an ai the same way it does in us? I'm not so sure, but this definitely got me thinking about it.

KILLING TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE By Robin Leigh Morgan When my OH joined me in being retired last January we had so much hope to do some real traveling, but unfortunately the cards turned out not in our future. With my dear being hospitalized twice and two rounds of REHAB we’ve wound up being homebound. The other thing I wanted both of us to do is to start eating healthier foods than we’ve both had while working.I found this book not only to have a decent variety of Low Fat Soups, Salads, Main Dishes, Breakfast and Dessert Recipes; it also has allowed us to taste the cuisine of the Mediterranean area, a place I doubt neither one of us will be able to visit now, without having to dine out paying high prices for the meals. These recipes have also allowed us to make sure of the freshness of the ingredients being used, as well as adjusting the recipes to better suit our taste. For allowing me to kill the birds in the above, I’m giving Ms. Grey’s book 4 STARS.

I am bound to fully understand the Mediterranean Diet now. Thanks to this book, more light had been shed and now that I know better, I can make my choices. What is amazing about this book is that it has topics that made it easier for me to comprehend this diet even more. I also learned a great deal here. But of course the most amazing thing is the 100 recipes of low fat soup, salad, main dish, breakfast, and even desserts. This book is indeed a great grab and one that must stay in everybody's library, you know, for future reference. Really, when it comes to the Mediterranean Diet, this is the book to read.

I venture to call this Essay 'Lombard Street,' and not the 'Money Market,' or any such phrase, because I wish to deal, and to show that I mean to deal, with concrete realities. A notion prevails that the Money Market is something so impalpable that it can only be spoken of in very abstract words, and that therefore books on it must always be exceedingly difficult. But I maintain that the Money Market is as concrete and real as anything else; that it can be described in as plain words; that it is the writer's fault if what he says is not clear. In one respect, however, I admit that I am about to take perhaps an unfair advantage. Half, and more than half, of the supposed 'difficulty' of the Money Market has arisen out of the controversies as to 'Peel's Act,' and the abstract discussions on the theory on which that act is based, or supposed to be based. But in the ensuing pages I mean to speak as little as I can of the Act of 1844; and when I do speak of it, I shall deal nearly exclusively with its experienced effects, and scarcely at all, if at all, with its refined basis.

Lombard Street: A Description of the Money Market, by Walter Bagehot

Amazon.com Review People panicked during a credit crunch or economic downturn on London's Lombard Street of the 1800s just as they do on Wall Street today. That's only one reason this reprint of the classic book by famed 19th-century economist Walter Bagehot offers lessons even now. First published in 1873, the book is a compilation of 11 essays that Bagehot wrote as the editor of The Economist, and includes his advice to banks for dealing with financial crises: "We must keep a great store of ready money always available, and advance out of it very freely in periods of panic, and in times of incipient alarm. Any notion that money is not to be had, or that it may not be had at any price, only raises alarm to panic and enhances panic to madness."

In terms of the U.S. savings-and-loan crisis and the Asian economic meltdown of the 1990s, Bagehot's words still ring as timely, even with the dated references to British politics of the time. For example, he proposed allowing unstable banks to collapse and advocated creating an independent finance professional to run the nation's central bank. Lombard Street, named after London's financial district and the birthplace of the money market, will be an eye opener for students and others interested in the history and workings of financial systems. --Dan Ring

Review "...classic account of the money market...makes vivid reading" (Spectator Business, November 2008)

From the Inside Flap "The briefest and truest way of describing Lombard Street is to say that it is by far the greatest combination of economical power and economical delicacy that the world has ever seen." -Walter Bagehot The English precursor to Wall Street, London's Lombard Street is the original district of finance and the birthplace of the money market. Fast-paced and highly-charged, it is a hotbed of financial activity whose impact is felt not just nationally, but globally. Though similar in many ways to its American counterpart, this "unequalled fund of floating money" nevertheless possesses a character all its own, the essence of which was brilliantly captured more than a century ago in Lombard Street. The chef d'oeuvre of Walter Bagehot, Lombard Street began as a series of articles the esteemed essayist and financial advisor had written for the Economist during the 1850s. First published in book form in 1873, it is a vivid description of the money market that seamlessly brings together theoretical analyses, historical anecdotes, and incisive commentary on sociology, politics, and the Street's various personalities. Sharing his invaluable insights and unique observations, Bagehot touches on everything from the mechanics of deposit banking within a fractional reserve system to the nature of foreign deposits in Britain. Along with a clear explanation of why economic growth and rising living standards are dependent upon a well-managed financial system, he offers straightforward guidelines for the function of lender-of-last resort; a penetrating look at the consequences of uncontrolled credit and speculation; and an in-depth examination of the role of the exchequer in the money market that includes a stimulating analysis of the interaction between the government's fiscal operations and the functioning of the Bank of England, the commercial banks, and the money market. Perhaps most importantly, Lombard Street features Bagehot's prescription for crisis management, which after nearly 150 years, remains the formula of choice for containing-and curtailing-financial crises. Filled with descriptions of Lombard Street that still ring true today, this jewel of a book has withstood the test of time to become a true investment classic-one that will appeal as much to the readers of today as it did to those of years ago.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. The human face of finance By N. Tsafos Can a book about finance written in 1873 be helpful in a world with complex financial markets and plenty of information about how they work? The answer is yes. It is not that "Lombard Street" is a classic that one finds quoted many a time; the reader's interest should transcend historical inquiry or curiosity; "Lombard Street" should be read and revered by anyone interested in the underlying, abiding features of financial markets. But what are those characteristics? Bagehot, then editor of The Economist, writes that credit centers on trust: "Credit means that a certain confidence is given, a certain trust reposed." And, banks always have on-demand liabilities that far exceed their readily available assets. In short, credit works on trust, and the system, in the absence of trust, can fall apart rapidly. What follows from these premises is a careful examination of how the money market came about, what its uses are, how its operations are connected to trade and country's overall welfare, and, most importantly, how central banks can deal with financial crises. Written elegantly, "Lombard Street" is, at the same time, an introductory overview of the market and a trenchant analysis of its most salient features. But what makes "Lombard Street" timeless is that it deals with finance in its human form. Bagehot talks about power, prestige and perception as much as he does about interest, discount, and credit. Trust is based on institutions and people: the human features of finance-trust, anxiety, mania, optimism-are timeless and apply to the financial markets of the nineteenth, twentieth, or twenty-first century. That is why "Lombard Street" is an ever useful introduction and guide.

Nord Walter Bagehot was the first editor of the now world-famous Economist magazine, which has in many ways remained faithful to the liberal philosophy (in a European sense)of its founder. Lombard Street might be difficult to read at first, but as with Charles Dickens once you get used to the style the tale is riveting. And his advice on how a central bank, as the lender of last resort, should behave in the face of a banking crisis remains valid to this day.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Good book -- but not this edition By Dean Scrimgeour This is an excellent book. But this edition is extremely poorly produced. There are far too many typos, and little information about the original publication of the book, for example. The layout is ugly. It's great the book is cheap, but I wish I had paid a little more for a nicer version.

In my eyes never has their ever been 5000 acres on this earth that had more of a purposeful existence than The Sykes Place Plantation of the 1940's and 1950's. The reputation of the word plantation has been so misconstrued for years. The Sykes Place book brought new meaning to how the races can work together in harmony and grace and serve such a purpose of worth to the nation and to an era of so much misunderstanding and change. Everyone on The Sykes Place made a contribution of value to a productive life that benefitted one another and our society. Read The Sykes Place and you will see history recorded with genuine meaning attached to it. John Carson.

LIFE ON A SOUTHERN PLANATION IN MISSISSIPPI By TOMMAYFIELD THIS IS A WONDERFUL BOOK ABOUT THE REAL STORY PLANTATION LIFE IN MODERN TIMES IN THE SOUTH. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY BOOKS AND MOVIES ON THE SUBJECT FROM FROM THE PERIOD OF SLAVERY AND THE CIVIL WAR. THIS BOOK TELLS THE REAL STORY OF OF A MORE CURRENT PERIOD STARTING AROUND 1939 AND THE BOOK TELLS THE STORY OF SAUNDERS CARSON AND HIS FAMILY WHO OWNED AND BUILT SYKES PLACE WHICH WAS ONE OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING PLANTATIONS IN THE SOUTH AND WAS LOCATED NEAR COLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI. I FOUND IT VERY IMPORTANT IN READING THE BOOK BY JOHN CARSON, ONE OF SAUNDER'S SONS. THE BOOKS TELLS IN A REAL WAY HOW MR. CARSON TREATED HIS EMPLOYEES, ALMOST ALL OF WHOM WERE BLACK AND THEIR FAMILIES . IF YOU LIKE TO READ ABOUT SOUTHERN HISTORY THEN THIS IS A MUST READ. AND THE BOOK TELLS ABOUT SOUTHERN FARM LIFE THAT HAS NOT BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT FROM THIS PERSPECTIVE. TOM

Real french cookies ideas By Carine Davery I'm french and live in the USA so I'm very proud that Emily, American woman who lives in Paris, wants to promote the french culture for her compatriots. This book is really well written and documented with actual recipes we cook/bake in french families. It gives you ideas using products that you can find in the US. It also provides you with a list and description on where to find interesting places for foodies in Paris. Bon appétit!

A fun and informative read with easy classic french recipes to try By staceypkeating The book is organized by season with interesting and comprehensive guides to local Paris markets, focusing on where to find products that come from in and around Paris. There are also profiles on up-to-the-minute happenings in Paris, perfect for any francophile wanting to explore new restaurants, cookware shops, natural wine bars or craft beers. The recipes included are classic french faire, which are simple enough to be able to find the ingredients almost anywhere in the world. Emily's voice shines through the pages as fun and knowledgable, giving you the courage to try the recipes and ask informed questions to your local grocery resource. The photos throughout are beautiful and truly capture the essence of Paris. A must-read for anyone even slightly interested in French food and the locavore movement.

Part guidebook and part cookbook, it is as much an ode to the work of the artisans and producers who call Paris home as it is to the recipes inspired by them. What I love about Emily's recipes is that they are truly focused on seasonal, local eating, and are easily adaptable to any kitchen. Proof that mastering good French cooking isn't harder than sourcing a few key ingredients and mastering a few tricks. For anyone going to Paris, this should serve as the ultimate guidebook to explore the genuine food artisans that the city has to offer, and for anyone else, a Parisian dish on the table is just a recipe away.

The aim of David McAdams's Game-Changer is nothing less than to empower you with this wisdom - not just to win in every strategic situation (or "game") you face but to change those games and the ecosystems in which they reside to transform your life and our lives together for the better.

Game-Changer develops six basic ways to change games-commitment, regulation, cartelization, retaliation, trust, and relationships-enlivened by countless colorful characters and unforgettable examples from the worlds of business, medicine, finance, military history, crime, sports, and more.

The book then digs into several real-world strategic challenges, such as how to keep prices low on the Internet, how to restore the public's lost trust in for-charity telemarketers, and even how to save mankind from looming and seemingly unstoppable drug-resistant disease. In each case, McAdams uses the game-theory approach developed in the book to identify the strategic crux of the problem and then leverages that "game-awareness" to brainstorm ways to change the game to solve or at least mitigate the underlying problem.

So get ready for a fascinating journey. You'll emerge a deeper strategic thinker, poised to change and win all the games you play. In doing so, you can also make the world a better place. "Just one Game-Changer [is] enough to seed and transform an entire organization into a more productive, happier, and altogether better place," McAdams writes. Just imagine what we can do together.

I will admit that I know a little about game theory, but I have yet to apply it. With my prior knowledge of game theory not taken into consideration, I felt this book was a easy to understand. However the book focuses only on the most common game in game theory, the prisoners dilemma. This appears to be the most common game that people play. The book offers a detailed look into the inner workings of the PD, so no prior game theory knowledge is really even necessary.

Good Premise, but some bad and inaccurate examples By cmkadmin The basic premise of the book is dealing with a "game" known as the prisoners dilemma and ultimately ways out of it. It all culminates in a one page summary on p.146. The principles you learn are quite helpful in identifying this scenario's appearance in real life situations in business, medicine, politics, etc... The main section of the book is followed by 6 practical examples. It reads well and is almost entirely non-technical, making it a good introduction to game theory for those curious about it.My only complaint is that some of the examples weren't chosen very well. For example, the author, very early on, encourages 'welcoming regulation'. Here, he cites the tobacco industry advertising ban as an example - as banning advertising (except print of course) freed up approximately 30% of company revenue without having a measurable effect on sales. Of course, the underlying reason is that tobacco products are highly addictive. This sort of situation is, I reckon, very rare - but perhaps you can think of more examples.Still, all in all a good book - the concept is sound and might convince you to look into the many other aspects of game theory.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Game Theory barely included; Great for a student critically examining business competition for the first time By VA Calling this a book on game theory feels quite misleading, in my opinion. At best, I would recommend this book to a high school senior in AP Economics, or else a freshman business school student, really anyone who is critically examining the world of business competition for the first time. The premise of the book is that these dozens of cases are an example of a prisoner's dilemma, and each chapter is supposed to be a concept on how to escape the dilemma, with the second half being a set of case studies that "more-deeply". Often times, the most interesting piece of the case has yet to play out, and instead of applying a critical analysis of the possible outcomes, the author simply leaves it along the lines of "we'll wait and see" or "will require further investigation".The entirety of the game theory material included in the book can be distilled to just a few pages, and if you're already familiar with prisoner's dilemma, the remaining theory could fit on a single page. The rest of the book is merely short write-ups of basic competition with about the depth one would find in the Wall Street Journal or BusinessWeek. The "examples" often feel poorly related to the individual concepts in each chapter, or else stray so far in the narrative as to make it difficult to remember the point, and sometimes to the point of not appearing to be accurate at all. I understand that in teaching materials it's necessary to generalize and make assumptions in absence of perfect comparisons, however this book does little to intuitively frame the key concept in each chapter and apply any sort of structured analysis to the thinly-detailed cases, making it all the less credible when the author makes huge leaps of logic in the "analysis". Instead, it reads like a well-written commentary on one very narrow view of competition. As an investment analyst, I understand that I may be approaching this book with a leg-up on its target audience and therefor be overly-critical, however I have no formal education in game theory, and so the rating reflects this book's failure to teach any more game theory than could learn from a ten minute YouTube video. This book will be an interesting read for the absolute beginner, and I will in fact be recommending it to my old Intro to Business Management professor, however if you've already taken any collegiate level business management/strategy courses, or worse, an introductory game theory course (or even just some free online videos), you already know more than what this book is able to teach you.Update:To clarify further, part of why I find the book disappointing is that the author is clearly very knowledgeable, but in an attempt to make the book as accessible as possible to every audience, it alienates readers already familiar with reading the news about a corporate merger or Chinese-Japenese posturing in the South Pacific imagining what each player will do next to gain the upper hand. I hoped that this book would allow me to carry on this daily activity of critical analysis, but with an extra set of tools through which to make predictions. Unfortunately, the "escapes" from prisoners dilemma were only loosely applied and the theoretical basis thinly explained, making them difficult to use in a structured analysis elsewhere. I understand to some extent the effort to be "non-technical", however it makes it much more difficult to apply the theory included without the book also including a more formal structure to the case analysis. I would hope a second edition would shorten the many examples to help keep the reader from losing site of the purpose of each example, which would then allow the author to include more examples (preferably including additional political science and geopolitics). Then for the actual case studies, instead of telling the story start to finish like a newspaper article, before attempting to relate it all back to the subject in a closing paragraph, give an opening paragraph describing the situation and competitive environment, then break down the players, and invite the reader to identify the motivations, the payoffs, etc. then apply the theoretical framework for "escaping" the dilemma, then close with a summary of how it actually played out in history, if it has at all, and if not, provide a more detailed look at the possible scenarios.

Short Shadows is a book of cultural criticism, inflected with the author’s lyrical touch. The author turns his attention to a wide spectrum of personal experience, ideas, and cultural phenomena, which include: the loss of a mother, love and heartbreak, the phantom quality of photographs (the book includes over fifty photographs taken by the author), the folly of politicians, the hypocrisy of academia, the art of writing, art history, Facebook, television, branding, meditations on cities and towns. It is a poetically rich and intellectually astute book, which doesn’t shy away from critical reflection, but rather revels in it. Gentle and polemical, it is book of meditations, which will fascinate readers who are passionate about the cultural world around them.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A very good read. It is the type of book you ... By Pieter Fabi A superb collection of essays. A very good read. It is the type of book you will read again and again. In the genre of Jabes. The author has a vast and impressive reference cadre in which writers, artists, philosophers and cinema script writers are summoned to comment on the images which are reflected on the pages. The text is enriched by some reflective photos taken by the author himself. It reminded me of the memoria thesis found in narrative theology.Whilst I usually have a problem with quotations, the way in which the author uses the quotations as comments on contemporary society, actually eradicated my prejudice. In this instance the quotations interpret the text. I am of the opinion that textual commentary should lay bare the various layers in a text which inevitably exist in a fundamental piece of writing. Interpretation becomes an archaeological exercise - the interpreter sets himself the task to dig and dig and dig in an effort to lay bare the ruins. Schoeman does more than that. With dark humour, with sharp intellect, with bold candour he flicks on an impressive array of intellectual lights to bring the fragments of his quest to the reader’s attention. On this stage we cannot but notice the shadows. Fascinating. It is a book that any student of Kafka and Benjamin cannot miss. Any lover of the big screen will be entertained and surprised how remarks of actors become relevant and actual. The diary notes on some of the cities and towns mentioned, makes a re-visit compulsory. It is a remarkable effort.I certainly hope there is more to come from this original pen.

It took awhile before I realized it was like a smartphone. This story also works as a allegory about how we live life through our devices and are more engaged with our smartphones and tablets than people, nature, and the arts. It would make a good novel.

The Yosemite, by John Muir

From Publishers Weekly Sierra Club founder Muir, pioneering conservationist who a century ago fought to establish Yosemite National Park, wrote timelessly of his travels through this High Sierra wilderness. In a new edition of Muir's classic, Rowell ( Mountain Light ) offers a complementary vision in color photographs of the monumental region. Celebrating the purity of the landscape Muir loved, he unveils bare mountain peaks, snow- and mist-filled realms and the pristine particularity of nature on a smaller scale in green and scarlet dogwood foliage and a snug cache of primroses sprouting among massive rocks. An ideal accompaniment to Muir's verbal tour, the photographs, like the prose, verify that "everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where Nature may heal and cheer and give strength to body and soul alike." Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review “Not only is [Muir] the author to whom all men turn when they think of the Sierras and Northern glaciers . . . but he was also . . . a man able to influence contemporary thought and action on the subjects to which he had devoted his life.” —Theodore Roosevelt

From the Inside Flap In the spring of 1869, John Muir was looking for means of support to fund his explorations of California's Central Valley region. A ranch owner offered him a job herding sheep in the Sierra Nevada. As he explored the region, he jotted down his keen observations of the scenic countryside, and he eventually became a guide for some of Yosemite's most famous visitors, including Ralph Waldo Emerson. Muir documented these experiences in The Yosemite, first published in 1912. It is at once a vivid, accurate description of the land and a passionate homage to nature. This Modern Library Paperback Classic is a facsimile of the 1912 edition and includes the original illustrations.

Muir wrote this book when he was 73 years old and recollects his experiences over may years in the valley. I found the most interesting sections to be descriptions of personal events - riding an avalanche, passing behind Yosemite Falls, the people he knew during those years. I simply wish more of the book had a similar content, I feel we have only been exposed to the tip of the iceberg, and there is so much more he could have offered. I have several of his other books, yet to read, so perhaps they will expand on his personal adventures. There are lengthy sections on the landscape, flowers, trees and other physical characteristics of the valley. It is these latter sections that drop me to a four star rating. I have a version without any pictures, and I believe that photographs would have done many sections of this book more justice than words. Some information on the trees may be unique and interesting, but I found myself skimming over several sections due to a lingering over latin names and taxonomy. This book should simply not be missed by those with a love for the outdoors, but keep in mind there may be some sections lacking the personal touch I was expecting for the whole book.

Should be required reading for all Yosemite Tourists By topchef To fully experience the magic that is The Yosemite they should give this out in the park. Understanding the history of what you see will bring the park to life in an entirely new way.I highly recommend reading this, and then joining the Sierra Club.

Bridled by God, Muir shows that his effort to discover was to be matched only by his drive to preserve Yosemite's existence forever. Muir's determination lead him on walks of over a thousand miles...... most of the time without uttering a word to anyone unless it was absolutely necessary. Truly a soul experienced only once in a millennium. Great read. Very inspiring!!

Cosmic evolution, the idea that the universe and its constituent parts are constantly evolving, has become widely accepted only in the last 50 years. It is no coincidence that this acceptance parallels the span of the Space Age. Although cosmic evolution was first recognized in the physical universe early in the 20th century, with hints even earlier, the relationships among planets, stars, and galaxies, and the evolution of the universe itself, became much better known through the discoveries by planetary probes and space telescopes in the latter half of the century. It was also during the last 50 years—a century after Darwin proposed that evolution by natural selection applies to life on our own planet—that researchers from a variety of disciplines began to seriously study the possibilities of extraterrestrial life and “the biological universe.” Considering biology from this broader cosmological perspective has expanded biological thinking beyond its sample-of-one straightjacket, incorporating biology into cosmic evolution. Astrobiology is now a robust discipline even though it has yet to find any life beyond Earth. But there is a third component to cosmic evolution beyond the physical and the biological. Even if we only know of culture on one planet so far, cultural evolution has been an important part of cosmic evolution on Earth, and perhaps on many other planets. Moreover, it also dominates the other two forms of evolution in terms of its rapidity. Humans were not much different biologically 10,000 years ago, but one need only look around to see how much we have changed culturally. Yet, unlike the study of biological evolution, which has made great progress since Darwin’s Origin of Species, the scientific study of cultural evolution languished after Darwin’s death for the better part of a century. Only within the past few decades has significant progress been made, and concerned with advancing their fledging science, cultural evolutionists have yet to expand their thinking beyond their current planetary sample-of-one concerns. But if life and intelligence do exist beyond Earth, it is likely that culture will arise and evolve. In this volume authors with diverse backgrounds in science, history, and anthropology consider culture in the context of the cosmos, including the implications of the cosmos for our own culture.

Review  Reviews from Goodreads:

John Carter McKnight rated it with 4 stars and had this to say:

"Anthology of uniformly high quality. Diverse enough that few will find all the articles exceptionally interesting. It's divided into three parts: a pair of introductory essays on cosmic evolution, grounded in current work in complexity studies, a section on cultural evolution (cultural anthropology and memetics) and a back half on philosophy. I found the first three essays - the opening section and Kathryn Denning's long piece on the anthropology of SETI - really first rate and fascinating; the memetics pieces interesting, and little of the back half worthwhile, but I don't have much patience for philosophy.

The volume's subject to the critique that it's wishful thinking about extraterrestrial intelligence and our species having a future at astronomical timescales, dressed up in speculative science: that's a fair categorization of the back half, thought he front half has much to offer the scholar working on more ordinary timescales."

So Hakim rated it with two (2) stars and had this to say, "Interesting big picture, interesting topics -- but sadly couldn't manage for enjoyable narrative. Which is a shame; I personally feel this book can be magnificent if it has more engaging style. For serious learners only."

There's a lot of material about cosmic evolution of universes, anthropic reasoning, SETI and what happens to mature civilizations. Many of the contributors discuss cultural evolution intelligently, make use concepts from memetics, and generally know what they are talking about. As contributors, we have Blackmore on temes, Dennettt on memes, Gardner on the intelligent universe, John Smart on the amazing future, Paul Davies - and many others. However, the book is jam packed with wild speculation about far-future events and possible alien evolution - and other material on the fringes of science. I liked it, but this may not be for everyone.

A couple of years ago I discovered her graphic novel, The Test, on Amazon and I loved it. The illustrations were beautiful and the story was so compelling I read it all in one sitting. Her writing style is just so genuine and she has such a great sense of humor it was a joy to read. Ms. Forrest brings that same easy, authentic, and delightfully humorous voice to this short story. Ms. Forrest please write more!

Insects. They’re what’s for dinner. Can you imagine a world in which that simple statement is not only true but in fact an unremarkable part of daily life? Daniella Martin, entomophagist and blogger, can.

In this rollicking excursion into the world of edible insects, Martin takes us to the front lines of the next big trend in the global food movement and shows us how insects just might be the key to solving world hunger. Along the way, we sample moth larvae tacos at the Don Bugito food cart in San Francisco, travel to Copenhagen to meet the experimental tasters at Noma’s Nordic Food Lab, gawk at the insects stocked in the frozen food aisle at Thailand’s Costco, and even crash an underground bug-eating club in Tokyo.

Martin argues that bugs have long been an important part of indigenous diets and cuisines around the world, and investigates our own culture’s bias against their use as a food source. She shines a light on the cutting-edge research of Marcel Dicke and other scientists who are only now beginning to determine the nutritional makeup of insects and champion them as an efficient and sustainable food source.

Whether you love or hate bugs, Edible will radically change the way you think about the global food crisis and perhaps persuade you that insects are much more than a common pest. For the adventurous, the audiobook includes a list of edible insects, recipes, and instructions on how to raise bugs at home.

Edible: An Adventure into the World of Eating Insects and the Last Great Hope to Save the Planet, by Daniella Martin

From Booklist This book is about eating bugs—in the author’s definition, any terrestrial invertebrate—and how insects and other invertebrates just might be the answer to world hunger. Martin, a self-avowed entomophagist, ate her first bug (a fried grasshopper) while studying pre-Columbian food and medicine in Mexico. But it wasn’t until she realized that there was actually a worldwide movement afoot to add insects back into the human diet that Martin dedicated herself to educating us about the advantages of eating bugs. As the author deconstructs our modern diet, we begin to realize the inefficiency and waste that goes into the raising of meat animals. And with the ever-increasing human population and the fact that at least one in seven persons on this planet does not get enough to eat, does it not make sense to turn to insects as a food source? In this chatty, informative, and eminently readable manifesto–cum–food travelogue, Martin takes the reader along as she talks to chefs who cook with insects, muses about vegetarianism and veganism (and why being a vegan ultimately won’t work), collects corn earworms from a community farm, rhapsodizes on the flavor of sautéed waxworms, and, in general, turns us on to eating bugs. Complete with recipes and nice descriptions of edible insects. --Nancy Bent

Review “Never didactic, Martin gently nudges readers toward open-mindedness at the prospect of eating bugs: ‘Why not make the best of what we have the most of?’ Regardless of readers’ culinary proclivities, Martin’s lively book poses timely questions while offering tasty solutions.” —Kirkus Reviews “In this chatty, informative, and eminently readable manifesto–cum–food travelogue, Martin takes the reader along as she talks to chefs who cook with insects, muses about vegetarianism and veganism (and why being a vegan ultimately won’t work), collects corn earworms from a community farm, rhapsodizes on the flavor of sautéed waxworms, and, in general, turns us on to eating bugs.” —Booklist“It’s not easy for most Americans to see this, but insects are going to be a far bigger part of our menus in the next 25 years. Daniella Martin’s Edible is a fun, articulate look at the world of entomophagy, and the arguments for adding insects to our diet.” —Josh Schonwald, author of The Taste of Tomorrow: Dispatches from the Future of Food “Daniella Martin’s contagious ‘entosiasm’ for eating insects makes you rush to join the insect-eating movement that people in the Western world left aside by mistake in the past.” —Marcel Dicke, professor of entomology at Wageningen University, The Netherlands, and author of The Insect Cookbook: Food for a Sustainable Planet “Daniella’s contagious enthusiasm about edible insects has the power to make you think again...Laced with anecdotes full of the wisdom of various proponents of eating insects and such rich descriptions of the taste and texture of many bug-based dishes that you will feel you have been missing out, Edible is both a quick read and a valuable resource which will certainly be consulted often by an army of new proponents of this incredible source of nutrition. Even those it cannot claim as converts will be more interesting around the dinner table after consuming this fact-filled frolic through the world of eating insects.” —Treehugger.com“Speaking in plain, but engaging language, Daniella Martin draws us into her adventure in the world of edible insects. We follow her around the world, beginning with her quest into ancient Aztec cuisine as a cultural anthropology student and traveling up to the present moment with her as a media celebrity and an accomplished gourmet chef. This is not just an entertaining coffee-table book but a moment to ask serious questions about cultural aversions that are now stumbling blocks in our quest for healthy diets in a sustainable world.” —Florence Vaccarello Dunkel, editor of The Food Insects Newsletter and professor of entomology at Montana State University

“Through gentle suggestion, powerful facts, and a world of experience, Daniella Martin opens her readers to the notion of eating bugs for health, economics, the environment, and just plain old flavor. Open the book squeamish, settle into curiosity, and find yourself convinced." —DIY Food

Author DANIELLA MARTIN is a certified entomophagist, or bug-eating expert and the knee jerk reaction of many will certainly be NO WAY! Daniella has traveled the world learning how other countries and cultures have successfully eaten bugs for centuries. The palate of us North Americans has changed over the last couple of hundred years whether we care to admit it or not. At the first Thanksgiving the Pilgrims no doubt were embarrassed to serve lobster which was poor man's fare. These now expensive delicacies were then considered garbage and piled up on the shore after storms. We learn that until a Japanese businessman from Japan Airlines began importing Bluefin tuna in the 60's it was just considered a good-fighting sports-fish that was thrown back after it was weighed and photographed with the angler.Insects are found in great quantities all over the world. The raising and cultivating of insects for food is more sustainable than conventional livestock. Crickets taste like nutty shrimp but a pound requires 1,000x less water per pound than a pound of chicken. The author traveled the world investigating indigenous cultures that use insects as an integral part of their cuisine. This is a fascinating read and never boring as new gastronomy is explored for the good of the planet but also to expand the appreciation of new tastes that may be surprisingly pleasurable and satisfying. The author ends the book with methods for raising insects as husbandry but best yet offers recipes for many varieties of the creepy-crawlies. Among them are the Wax Moth Taco, Crickety Kale Salad and Fig Canapés made with grasshoppers. As a final caveat the reader is warned that if you are allergic to shellfish you may also be allergic to insects and if you are allergic to bee stings, don't eat bees.I really enjoyed this book but have yet to attempt actually eating insects but as far as the author, she maintains: "Once a bug-eater, always a bug-eater".

Daniella Martin begins by explaining why insects should be a normal part of the human diet from both a nutritional and ecological standpoint. She provides a sound, logical argument for the consumption of insects while fully aware of the obstacles to adding bugs to the Western diet. This is the hard part to wrap your brain around, even for someone who doesn't mind insects or see them as creatures to be wiped out. I was interested to read Edible because my son, who is now ten, has been fascinated by insects for the past seven years. He collects them, reads about them, studies them, and yes, even eats them when he gets the chance. I once took him to an entomophagy event at the nearby Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. He was willing to try some insect dishes (veggie fried rice with crickets and mealworms), but I could not get over my squeamishness. While there are always bugs in our freezer waiting to be spread and pinned, cooking and eating them is something I'm not really brave enough to try, although I do plan to look up some of the companies mentioned in the book. My son would love nothing more than to order some specimens he can sample and/or add to his collection. In Edible, Martin does a very good job of making insects sound delicious. She makes me think I could maybe give entomophagy a try as she describes her travels to various countries and the types of insect cuisine she encounters. If we eat crabs, lobster, and shrimp, why not bugs? She presents her story and thoughts with a good dose of humor. Edible is very readable and interesting. Entomophagy is one food trend that I hope continues to grow as hopefully my courage will grow and I will someday try a wax worm taco.

I should probably explain that we've lived in places where insects are eaten as a matter of course, so there is no ick factor. So I was very disappointed that it was not actually a recipe book. It does have a few recipes in it as well as instructions to raise your own meal worms, but really not much, and disappointingly, no pictures. However I rated it low for other reasons. The book was written by a person who flew to this country to eat this bug and that country to eat another bug and across the states to eat bugs imported from all over the world at a world class restaurant. And in between the stories of her profligate adventures, she exhorted the poor of northern climes to save themselves by farming insects. (and save the planet in the process by reducing the grain required to produce protein and not caring that her own slip was showing, flapping gaily behind her huge jet fuelled carbon footprint)In reality, anywhere insects can be raised easily and reliably, the poor are already eating them. In the warm, moist countries of the world, you can buy them ready to snack on at the market, at the ferry crossing, and if you raise your chin just right, someone will come to your door with a laden bicycle to sell you some. The instructions given for raising various insects to eat require expensive containers, shipments of starter animals, and expensive food to maintan a populaton. (If the poor can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, and honey in the winter, they should probably just eat it.)The book felt self-righteous and condescending. It may appeal to an elite audience but falls tragically short of comprehending issues of poverty or agriculture. There are serious insect cookbooks available, as well as ethnic cookbooks that include traditional insect recipes that are much more worth your time and investment.
