I learnt how tea clean program works and all the benefits that one can get from green tea By Nigel Holt I have started to work hard to shed down the extra pounds I gained lately. The title of this book gained my attention and I immediately downloaded it. Accelerating weight loss and resetting metabolism seemed exaggerated though! Let me admit this book is very informative. An Early Science Fiction Novel that is still Educational and Enjoyable

“Imagine a vast sheet of paper on which straight Lines, Triangles, Squares, Pentagons, Hexagons, and other figures, instead of remaining fixed in their places, move freely about, on or in the surface, but without the power of rising above or sinking below it, very much like shadows—only hard with luminous edges—and you will then have a pretty correct notion of my country and countrymen. ” ― Edwin A. Abbott, Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions

Flatland by Edwin A. Abbot is a curious work of science and mathematical fiction. In the novel, the narrator named A. Square is a mathematician and resident of the two-dimensional Flatland. In Flatland, women are thin, straight lines (the lowliest of shapes), and men may have any number of sides, depending on their social status.

Amazon.com Review Flatland is one of the very few novels about math and philosophy that can appeal to almost any layperson. Published in 1880, this short fantasy takes us to a completely flat world of two physical dimensions where all the inhabitants are geometric shapes, and who think the planar world of length and width that they know is all there is. But one inhabitant discovers the existence of a third physical dimension, enabling him to finally grasp the concept of a fourth dimension. Watching our Flatland narrator, we begin to get an idea of the limitations of our own assumptions about reality, and we start to learn how to think about the confusing problem of higher dimensions. The book is also quite a funny satire on society and class distinctions of Victorian England.

Review This pre-Einstein geometrical fantasy is one of the best things of its kind that has ever been written, for it is more than an ingeniously sustained fantasy: it is a social satire, with wit as sharp as the sub-lutrous end of a Flatland woman; it is aneasy philosophical introduction to the Fourth Dimension; and it is a rebuke to everyone who holds that there is no reality beyond what is perceptible by human senses.>>> (Saturday Review )This pre-Einstein geometrical fantasy is one of the best things of its kind that has ever been written, for it is more than an ingeniously sustained fantasy: it is a social satire, with wit as sharp as the sub-lutrous end of a Flatland woman; it is an easy philosophical introduction to the Fourth Dimension; and it is a rebuke to everyone who holds that there is no reality beyond what is perceptible by human senses. --Saturday Review

Review One of the most imaginative, delightful and, yes, touching works of mathematics, this slender 1884 book purports to be the memoir of A. Square, a citizen of an entirely two-dimensional world. (The Washington Post Book World )Flatland has remained of interest for over a century precisely because of its ability to engage its readers on so many different planes in so many different dimensions. (Victorian Studies )This reprint of Abbott's Flatland adventures contains an Introduction by Thomas Banchoff which is worth reading on its own. So if you don't have yet this book at home, go ahead and buy this edition. (Zentralblatt MATH )

This isn't because it is boring, or because it is hard to read, but because of the large amount of digestion one need's to fully comprehend (and to fully enjoy) this book. Even this book contains only 82 pages, it is by no means light reading. The book was originally released in 1884 under Abbott's pseudonym A Square. In the story we follow the journey of a square who lives in a land of two dimensions--a flat land. In it class, and ultimately intelligence, is determined by the amount of sides that a shape has. As the amount of sides a shape has decreases, we find that it also is more emotional and apt to cause destruction through their pointed corners. Women are depicted as straight lines, but one has to take into account the time that this book was published. One can also disregard the story as having any relations to anything in our society and enjoy it for what it is, a mind bending social criticism. In this tale we follow the aforementioned square through his everyday life. we learn what it is like to exist in only two dimensions. We learn of how rain falls form the north and disappears to the south and how gravity is a minute force that pulls to the south ever so slightly. We follow him through the government and through social classes, and the discrimination that comes with them. When his son talks of geometric impossibilities such as 23 (cubed) he has a dream of a lesser land than his, a land called line land. IN it there is not two but only one dimension of being. Through discussion with the kind of lineland, we are offered insight into why our hero the square cannot conceive of the third dimension. Later our hero is visited by a great being, a sphere that appears to him seemingly out of nowhere. This confuses the square very much, and even more when the sphere tries to explain how he passed into his dimension from the third. After heated debate, the sphere takes him and shows him the third dimension, turning our hero into an evolved form of him self, a cube. Form his higher vantage point the square is able to see the innards of those who reside in flatland. He receives tutoring from the sphere about this new dimension and all that it entails. He learns of how limited the field of vision is for those living in flatland, both literally and figuratively. With his previous limits of reality stripped and with his eye opened to the truth, the square quickly follows logic and asks to see the insides of the sphere, and wishes to ascend further into greater dimensions, fourth dimensions and fifth and onward and upward. The sphere is appalled by this heresy and send our hero back to the limited realm of flatland. Here he tries to convince others to be enlightened, but cannot find success. He has a second dream involving the dimension of pointland, no dimensions. The being inhabiting this land is of nothing and knows nothing but itself, which is nothing. There fore this being cannot be disappointed by anything, because it cannot conceive of anything other than itself. We can see the religious parallels to Hinduism and Buddhism here. The completely content creature is of nothingness, much like the state that Buddhists try to achieve, and the outward ranking by dimension not sides can be seen in Hinduism in the spiral path towards God that the Hindu believe they travel along passing from one point on the spiral to another with each passing life. In this land of math all of the lands are contained within each other, much like the rings of the spiral. Finally after this dream the square realizes the futility of trying to convince others through speech, and he feels he must do it through demonstration. Folks hear of his heresy and bring him to the court for the climax of the book. Whether or not the plot of the novel itself is very entertaining, the ability to get your head around concepts that can only be experienced through the mind is challenged thoroughly by this novel. It is a must read for anyone who thinks that they are well educated, as it will quickly tell you just where you stand, theologically, philosophically and mathematically.

70 of 76 people found the following review helpful. Unimaginable Dimensions By Jon Linden Flatland is a unique and brilliant treatise on a trifurcated level. It is a sociological statement, a mathematical statement and a religious statement all rolled into an incredibly astute 82 pages. The book centers mostly on the differences between a two dimensional world and a three dimensional world; but comments on society, law, prejudice, religion, and proselytizing. The book especially points out the difficulty in envisioning a greater reality and a greater vision than is commonly observed by any individual in any dimension or society. The author's premise relates to things existing in a "plane geometry" world as opposed to a "Euclidian Geometric" three dimensional figure universe. The book carefully illustrates to one denizen of Flatland how the three dimensional world of space works and/or exists. Upon finally understanding the "Gospel of Three Dimensions" our protagonist goes on to try and apply the same arithmetic logic and geometric analogs to a fourth dimensional universe. Shouldn't there exist a fourth dimensional universe that allows an entity to look down upon the three dimensional universe with as much transparency as one can from three dimensions to two?Alas, things become different in dimensions other than the first, a world of lines, the second, a world of shapes and the third, a world of objects. In the zero dimension, all things are a point. Mathematically we know that any number raised to the "0" power equals 1 and therefore, all things in the zero dimension resolve into one single omnipotent point. This condition would also exist in the fourth dimension; as those of us in the third dimension have no model to compare it to. Envisioning a fourth dimension, even with time as the fourth dimension is truly difficult or impossible for us in the third dimension.Interspersed with this witty and intellectual dialogue are comments on society and its structure. He specifically comments multiple times of the degradation of women in society to the lowest social status. Only men are educated in Flatland. Interestingly, he paints a picture of an authoritarian society in which people are judged by their shapes and angles. This reflecting the Victorian societal values around him at the time of his writing.Flatland is recommended to all those who seek to enlighten their view of the universe and of potential universes. It is especially recommended to those seeking higher knowledge of any type. Flatland is truly a multi-dimensional experience and worth every minute.

It's printed directly from the digitized (and free) copy from Google Books and has clearly had NO editing work done. The book is filled with references to figures that were not included, mangled words, and seemingly random breaks and markings in some spots. This would be fine for a free digitized text online, but is entirely unacceptable for a paid-for product, especially a short book that would be similarly priced in a physical store.

Well-written and full of atmosphere By Lynda Dickson - Books Direct "Darker Places" is a collection of thirteen poems interspersed with thirteen short stories, mainly horror or paranormal, with a hint of humor in some. They focus mainly on the themes of death, love, loss, hunger, and the passage of time. The author comes up with some truly memorable lines in both his stories and poems, but the rhyming in some of the poems is a bit forced; I much prefer the free verse. The stories are well-written and full of atmosphere but can become a bit repetitive, with death staring everyone in the face. As such, this collection is probably best sampled in small doses, much like a box of fine chocolates. Jack London's little-known short story classics By David Hann This collection of short stories contains the well-known classic, "To Build a Fire," and that story deserves its place at the summit of American short stories. What the collection Lost Face has, however, are several other Jack London short stories that are sure to hold your attention. The title story, "Lost Face," depicts how a man's ability to keep his head in a dire situation saves him from a fate worse than death. My personal favorite in this collection is "That Spot," a great story for anyone who has owned or had to deal with a difficult dog. The narrator of "That Spot" remarks that there was something about Spot that made him uneasy, and the reader soon understands what that meant. This is a great collection of short stories, one which I recommend to anyone who likes Jack London's writing.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Much more than just "To Build a Fire" By Karl Janssen Lost Face is a collection of seven short stories by Jack London, all of which take place in Alaska or the Yukon Territory around the time of the Klondike Gold Rush. It is most notable for being the collection which contains "To Build a Fire," the classic story of a man trudging along the Yukon Trail, alone but for his dog, who finds himself struggling for survival against the 75-below-zero cold. It is London's most famous and widely read piece of writing, about as perfect as a short story can be, and sure to be read in junior high school English classes for centuries to come.In addition to this renowned masterpiece, Lost Face is loaded with unexpected gems. I had never heard of the other six stories in this collection, and I was greatly surprised at how good they are. By the time Lost Face was published in 1910, London had already published five collections of Klondike tales, ranging from the excellent (The Faith of Men) to the OK (Love of Life). In the latter book, London showed signs of exhausting the subject matter and running out of ideas, but here in Lost Face he comes up with seven very solid, original, exciting tales. The title story, "Lost Face," recalls the odyssey of a Polish freedom fighter who is imprisoned by the Russians, then escapes from the mines of Siberia and ends up in Alaska. He finds himself faced with torture and death at the hands of a Native American tribe, and desperately tries to come up with a way out of his predicament. "That Spot" is a comical tale in which the narrator recalls a dog he owned during his prospecting days in the Yukon; a magnificent, powerful, keenly intelligent beast who absolutely refused to perform the slightest bit of useful labor. In "Flush of Gold," two travelers on the sled dog trail stop at a cabin on Surprise Lake, where dwells a beautiful, mysterious woman who pines for a former lover. As one of the men relates the woman's history to his companion, the reader discovers the bizarre love story that darkens her past. "The Wit of Porportuk" tells of an Alaskan Indian chief, famous for his generosity and extravagance, who runs up big debts to a miserly money lender. When the time comes to collect the debt, the lender, Porportuk, sees it as an opportunity to claim the chief's beautiful daughter El-Soo for his mate. The girl, however, being very clever and well educated, comes up with a scheme to avoid becoming the greedy old man's property. Neither party's plans prove entirely successful, however, and just when you think you know where the story's going, it turns in a shocking and unexpected direction.Comparing the stories of Lost Face to London's Klondike tales of a decade earlier, one really gets a sense of how much he progressed as a writer. These seven tales are rendered in smooth and beautiful prose, skillfully plotted, and remarkably vivid in their depiction of time and place. Reading Lost Face transports you to the bygone world of the exotic North. Through London's eyes, it's a wild and unpredictable place where the powerful beauty of nature is ever present and invigorating adventure is commonplace.

Jack London's superb storytelling shines through, and each little short story in the book means something. I highly recommend this book. One of the reasons I admire Jack London as a writer, is because of his ability to capture your imagination, and transport you to his character's settings and world. "Lost Face" is a great example of that.

More than once I got caught up in the emotions of the events and couldn't believe what was happening! Definitely take time and check it out. You'll be hooked!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I wish I liked it more. By DCP I like the idea, the characters, and the setting. I can't stand the typos, mismatched verb tenses, bad punctuation, and other glaring grammar mistakes. Spell checker is not enough. It does not catch errors such as 'star' instead of 'stare'. The prose and dialogue need a great deal of work. If the author can focus and get a good editor, I think there is potential for good writing to support the good imagination.

I suggest reading the series in order, thought Rewind can be placed first before 15 Minutes or after because they are connected. It's not romance or sci-fi genres. It stands in a category alone. Thriller?Drama? Definitely good. Keeps your interest from beginning to end.

She weaves a super juicy story that sets this book off right. Lies, deception and secrets make this short story amazing. Her ability to hit you with that "I didn't see that coming element" is superb. Kr is up next and puts her spin on it like only she can. She gives it to you with strong characters, style & finesse. She gives you the other side of the coin. Kr has a very unique writing style and after reading all of her books (yes I own all of them). It was so cool to her write her part in a different style, and I loved it. Keith Gaston writes in so many genre's (Tease trilogy amazing) I was extremely excited with his erotic, suspenseful tale. His story gave you more insight on the characters and the ending was outstanding! Like the first crossroads Keith Kareem Williams ends the book with a story that brings a new character to the front that still intertwines the previous stories. This story was interesting, sad but thought provoking at the same time. It was beautifully written and it was a great way to end this Anthology. I'm a super fan of all of these Authors and this is great!

Thank you.All four authors penned a great story about the going ons and characters they pulled from one focal point. Each used their own style of writing to create a short story that tied them together. I enjoyed them all.More blessings to you all.4.75

A quick pace that keeps the pages turning. Unique story lines make it interesting and not predictable. My only complaint is that grammatical errors in the first 3 sections were too prolific and better editing was needed. A reader should not have to read a sentence twice to get the true meaning because the wrong word or extra words convolute the sentence and context.A great collaboration otherwise.

The political and public image of law enforcement and our military is a daily roller coaster of emotions. Events in Ferguson, New York, and Baltimore have caused significant strife within our communities. I support freedom of speech and the right to assemble, but when innocent people lose their businesses, homes, or even their lives during these events, it is not only illegal, but it is unjust. Tired of all the negative media given to these professions, I decided to take action and collect stories from men and women, currently serving or retired, in law enforcement, the military, and corrections. An overwhelming amount of entries were sent to me from around the country. Included in this anthology are the best of the best. You'll find humor, anger, excitement, nervousness, bitterness, and a hundred other human emotions within these stories. My intent, as it was with all the authors, was to try to give readers a glimpse behind the scenes. Proceeds from the sales of this project will be donated to the families of fallen officers, correctional officers, and military personnel. -C.L.Swinney

My brother was in the Navy during the Vietnam War and I know how badly he was treated when he came home. There is a lot of terrible things going on in this world today and I can't imagine a more terrifying job than that of a police officer or a corrections officer. The only job that may possibly be worse is that of a spouse of a law enforcement individual.I'm very proud of the individuals who shared their stories in this book. I appreciate them sharing their lives with me and all who read this book so that we may understand a little more about what they go through. I am proud of all of them and all the officers who go out their front doors every morning to make the world a safer place.Thank you all of your dedication to your chosen profession.

We've learned to compartmentalize the horrors and darkest acts of mankind as police officers...in an effort to not show weakness among our peers. The stories in this book by the men and women in blue let us know we're not the only ones who struggle with our chosen careers. This is a quick read with a simple, but strong message....love yourself, family and friends...in the end that's all we have. Thanks to the contributors and CL swinney for this collection of stories.

By Ian This is honestly one of the best books I have read in a long time. there are many who contributed to this book and it is a very insightful and informing read. Thank you to all who shared their stories in this book. If not for these brave men and women who serve our country everyday, this country would be in a much worse state than it currently is. It is nice to see things from and LE and military point of view. Great Job as always C. L Swinney

When Betty MacDonald married a marine and moved to a small chicken farm on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, she was largely unprepared for the rigors of life in the wild. With no running water, no electricity, a house in need of constant repair, and days that ran from four in the morning to nine at night, the MacDonalds had barely a moment to put their feet up and relax. And then came the children. Yet through every trial and pitfall - through chaos and catastrophe - this indomitable family somehow, mercifully, never lost its sense of humor.

A beloved literary treasure for more than half a century, Betty MacDonald's The Egg and I is a heartwarming and uproarious account of adventure and survival on the American frontier.

By A Customer One of the funniest books ever written, The Egg and I is all the more remarkable because it sounds completely contemporary, even though it was written more than 50 years ago and describes events that took place more than 70 years ago. MacDonald had a relentlessly clear eye, a sharp, witty writing style and in her own way was as liberated as was possible for her time (she was divorced and a single mother when such things were considered heinous). And I'd like to say one thing: although she does write disparagingly of some Native Americans living in her area, I think this is more due to a specific dislike of certain people she met rather than a blanket prejudice (early in the book she talks about her love and admiration for the Plains Indians who lived near her childhood home). I think McDonald was a singularly unbiased person, something also unique for a white woman of her era; one only has to read about the close friendships she made with Japanese-American and African-American women in "The Plague and I" (her account of her stay in a tuberculosis sanitarium) to realize this. No misguided PC agenda should deter anyone from reading MacDonald's irreverent and hilarious stories. She was a terrific writer.

Peters I can remember my mother reading this book fifty years ago, and even though she has long since passed away, to this day I can still hear her laughter while reading this book. The more years that pass and the more technologically driven we become, the more hilarious "The Egg and I" becomes. Moving from a city to "the boonies" to raise chickens on a chicken farm is quite a challenge, especially in the 1940's which is the setting for this book. No electricity and no indoor plumbing are quite a jump from modern civilization even in that era. Of course, in that day, women were expected to be obedient wives, prepared to follow their husband's wild and sometimes bizarre dreams no matter where they may lead. The author tells it all in a matter of fact way, with a spicy, witty sense of humour. Almost every page will keep the reader laughing out loud. It is easy to see why this book remains popular 61 years after it was first published! Betty MacDonald is no longer with us, but her memory lives on and still continues to bring us joy and laughter through her books. Also recommended is her book, "Onions in the Stew."

Towards the end of the book I was actually laughing out loud, with no one around to hear my glee. Betty describes, in wonderful detail, life on a chicken ranch and life with neighbors and various animals. Since I grew up in the country and my parents on a farm, I could relate to her wonderful descriptions of the sunrise and wild animals. I enjoyed it thoroughly and recommend this delightful read to anyone. (And I learned a few things about chickens as well.)

From the Back Cover With the kind of feeling generally reserved for more photogenic animals, Mills describes here the world of beavers, their unusual pacificism and vegetarianism, their engineering feats, their better-than-human conservation of natural resources. He shows that no animal ever contributed more to civilization or was itself more civilized.

About the Author James H. Pickering, Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Houston, has supplied an authoritative introduction to Mills's life and notes to this book, originally published in 1913.

By Elan I first came across this book while serving as a Park Ranger at Acadia National Park in Maine. I had befriended a family of beaver and was curious to learn more about these delightful creatures. I was discouraged by the lack of informative and interesting literature that was available. Luckily, a fellow ranger pointed me towards this book, and I quickly devoured it.Orginially published in 1913 (and subsequently often hard to find), Enos Mills's comprehensive observations of beaver behavior and lifestyle continues to serve as an authoritative depiction of the "Original Conservationists," as beaver are sometimes called. The famed naturalist and father of Rocky Mountain National Park writes with a tender eloquence that reveals his admiration for this noble animal. This book is not a collection of scientific facts about beaver, but rather a series poetic essay about the world of the beaver, their contributions to the opening of the western frontier, their better-than-human conservation of natural resources, and their present tenuous foothold in the shrinking wild places of North America. It is extremely informative and provides a thourough investigation of the lifestyle and habits of the beaver and the many myths that surround this curious creature. It is a book you will want to read from cover to cover. Even those who have never had the pleasure of meeting a beaver will enjoy this book.

In Beaver World by Enos Mills By Anonymous This is an absolutely wonderful, classic book, well worth reading, and has been reprinted in paperback fairly recently. I was so eager to have a copy of my own that I paid a rather exorbitant price for a paperback. I was horrified to receive a robotically printed copy of extremely poor quality, full of typos and errors and missing all the illustrations. Examples: first paragraph starts "f)om Qfluf ttfatb(", then later "T3 or6in ftfo a ONE September"....and this book is in ENGLISH. Amazon ought to warn people if they are getting one of these horridly inferior robot copies; but there's no way to tell ahead of time. There's just no excuse for this! Buyer beware.

Mills By Bomojaz Enos Mills moved from Kansas to near Estes Park, Colorado, as a young man and became an important spokesman for conservation issues during Teddy Roosevelt's administration. He relished the outdoors and studied nature, especially beavers and bears. This autobiography is fairly entertaining and interesting. He was your typical outsoors character, robust and very sure of himself. This latter characteristic apparently led to a dark side: he ran Long's Peak Inn for years in Estes Park and had a totalitarian personality that made many enemies, even of his once friends. His younger brother Joe followed in his footsteps to a degree and also published reminiscences. Enos Mills is considered the "Father of Rocky Mountain National Park."

Heartbreak, wisdom, and joy are offered in equal measure, finding balance between sweet and sour. Brother Raven: and Other Tales from the Middle of Nowhere, by Leland Dirks

From the Back Cover Flash fiction, sometimes called micro fiction, has roots as far back as Aesop's Fables, Jesus' parables, and Zen koans, perhaps even further. Often in the range of 250 to 1000 words, each is a complete story, including a protagonist, conflict, challenges, and resolution. To do so with so few words, the author often hints, rather than describes, various elements of the story. What is widely acclaimed as the shortest short story of all is often attributed to Ernest Hemingway, though no real proof exists of his authorship. It is, in its entirety: "For Sale: baby shoes, never worn."The form has grown more popular in recent years, owing in part to time constraints of readers, and authors who love a challenge. It's been further popularized by some authors who attempt to tell a story in 140 characters to fit in a single Tweet on the popular service Twitter. My own interest in the format began with an NPR contest called "Three Minute Fiction," in which the limit was 600 words. Later I was introduced to a weekly contest on the Indies Unlimited website, with a 250-word limit. Finally, I became a full-fledged fanatic when I found author J.D. Mader's website, where every Friday a lot of terrific writers gather to share their flash fiction with each other and the world. In fact, many of these stories first appeared on the latter two websites in slightly different form.Whether you read them on the subway, while you're boiling a three-minute egg, or on the porcelain throne, I hope you enjoy these tiny stories. Thank you so much for your support.

During my all too brief and misspent youth I ignored the short form. It is only now that buying green bananas seems like a grandiose show of optimism that I can appreciate little bit size chunks of stories. This collection has done a great deal to cement my new found belief that sometimes less is really more and that I am indeed mortal. Time is of the essence to us all and only ones as foolish as I buy in to the "there is always a tomorrow" myth.In this book myths are explored and brought to life. The art of fable is refined and redefined in contemporary tales with solid ties to an ancient past. Time traveling ghosts of memories and anthropomorphic narrators. Motorcycle riding cowboys and walking dead dogs. It is a collection of warm fuzzies and heart felt love that comforts, illuminates, and educates the reader. A rewarding anthology of images and memories created over weeks and months around the metaphorical campfires of the internet. The best part? The campfires are still being stoked by kind insightful, kind souls like Leland and Angelo.

Silk, Author/Reviewer Author Leland Dirks assisted by his intelligent dog, Angelo, has created a marvelous compilation of what I call minute-fiction. That's about how long it takes to read each of his 40-plus stories. Each story has a wonderful photo, most taken in and around San Luis Valley in Southern Colorado. Each story will entrance you whether it be about romance, a western, heartbreak, wisdom, indecision, joy, humor ... you name it! There's one story, "16, The Lines" which reminds me of the wonderful song by Harry Chapin, "Flowers Are Red." I've read most all the other stories written by Leland Dirks, enjoying every one. He lives a hermit's life, but his writings touch the hearts of all his readers and his followers on Facebook. Everyone will enjoy these exemplary stories. I've even read a couple of the stories to my dogs, and the stories met their approval, too! Thank you again for entertaining me!

The short story format is perfect, as I don't always have the time to sit down and read for 30+ minutes. It actually took me a little while to finish this book - mainly because I read them story by story, in small increments of time, between all the other demands in my life. This book is a welcome relief from those demands! There is often a thought-provoking spin in the story, or part of it that, when you finish, you think back over, and it makes you smile. I feel like Leland (and Angelo!) have a way of writing that is very... honest. No frills - just stories. I love it. I recommend keeping an eye out for "Fairies and Goblins," "Rescue Dog," "Last of Your Kind," and "Tricksters," a few of my favourites. I should just list them all, honestly... Thank you for this book!PS - the summaries at the end where Leland describes the "story behind the story" was a nice surprise! I enjoyed those just as much as the stories in the book. :]

In 1956, the families of two sisters, the Bartolini Girls, bought a two-flat on Detroit's east side. When our aunt's mother-in-law visited, there were twelve of us in residence. Lucky for us, the three women were incredible cooks. After Mom passed away - Nonna had preceded her - it became apparent that many of our treasured family recipes would be lost if steps weren't taken to record them all. With the help of the remaining Bartolini sister, my Zia Lea, I created a blog that would serve as repository for our recipes, some of which hadn't been prepared in decades. It didn't take long before we realized that discussion of the recipes often evoked memories of our life in the two-flat. We began to incorporate those recollections in the blog, as well. As the blog grew in both size and popularity, Zia suggested that I convert the blog to book form. I resisted because I realized that we had many more recipes to share. Now that we are nearing the end of the Bartolini family recipe file, I thought the time was right to create the book for Zia. "Recipes from the Bartolini Kitchens" is a compilation of the recipes that were primarily prepared by Mom, Zia Lea, and Nonna. It also includes the best of our memories of life under that one roof. You'll come for the recipes. You'll stay for the stories.

Recipes from the Bartolini Kitchens: With Memories of Life in a Two-Flat, by John Amici

About the Author John Amici John's professional career included information technology-related positions in both the banking and insurance industries. When an illness forced his early retirement, he turned his attention to cooking, primarily the family recipes he had so enjoyed during his youth. As his kitchen skills and knowledge increased, and with a great deal of help from his Aunt Lea, that interest became a food blog and now a book consisting of favorite family recipes and tales.

We are fortunate here that By Eha Carr To me John Amici's book resembles an onion: one peels away one layer to find yet another. It's wellknown that most Italian nonnas have their very own recipes and naturally they are the best! We are fortunate here that John has made a historical compilation not only how his nonna cooked but his mother and aunt: the Bartolini girls. The recipe collection forms a great basis for anyone to learn Northern Italian cooking from 101 onwards and the pasta recipes especially are both interesting and yet quite achievable for you and me! Yet there is more: we learn about five generations of the family - about an Italian-American love affair one with the other and with the country which became their own. I love John's recipes and shall cook most . . . more so I feel that proverbial fuzzy-warm feeling when I read about his family and look at the photos of the newest generation! Five stars from me!

By cecilia buyswheeler gunther The reason that this book is spectacular is that it is a very real slice of life. In fact more than a slice it is the whole meal! From the pasta right to the sauce. One family (with all its complexities) and one man who took on the enormous task of recording this families old world recipes. (and you and I know what families are like!) This is a startling piece of work just because it has come from these two sources. The author's mother and his mother's sister. The Bartolini girls. It is truthful with no frills or silliness. Good solid nourishing food of the early Italian immigrants to the USA. Clearly described. It evokes Italy, Old America, family life, love of family, love of the old country and the new, and the love of food that creates the scents and flavours of a close family. This is real food from the kitchens of a real family. I love it!.. just love it. c

By Madelon Wilson "Hildie at the Ghost Shore" is a beautifully and cleverly written bit of fantasy and Norse mythology that teases the senses and sensibility to believe one thing while leading to a very different ending than you might expect. I am increasingly delighted to read the works of Paula Cappa because one piece does not predict another. Her ideas are fresh and her voice varied. Her consistency lies in her ability to write elegant and readable prose.I really hate to provide spoilers, so all I will say is that this is a story well worth the short time it will take to read.I was gifted a copy of this story by the author for the purpose of writing a review.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Hauntingly Beautiful Short Story By Laura Hernandez I was gifted a copy of this short story by the author in exchange for an honest review. I made no guarantee of a favorable review. This short story was a deeply, powerful and meaningful story of the human heart and the capacity of the love it holds told via the use of Norse mythology. It was well written and I certainly did not see what was coming. I love a story that makes me cry upon revealing its most intimate secret. This is truly a must read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A haunting tale of supernatural mystery! By Werner A. Lind This short e-story, written by one of my Goodreads friends, is one I picked up when it was offered for free. Originally, I'd proposed to review it a few days ago. But the review proved challenging to write; it's a tale with a great deal of ambiguity and many unanswered questions. Eventually, I read it a second time, with the benefit of some gracious explanation by the author as to the underlying premise. Our setting here is a village on the North Sea coast of Flanders (the titular "ghost shore") in what seems like the 19th century --no date is specified, but the material culture and social conditions have that feel. Title character Hildie is an aged woman who weaves fine lace; but she's also a widely known reader of runes, inscribed on smooth stones for purposes of divination, a practice handed down from the Vikings, as is the folk veneration of Odin. (According to Wikipedia, the latter actually did survive, in the parts of Europe settled by the Germanic/Scandinavian peoples, into the 19th century.) In this story, she's visited early on by a seafaring man who wants her to read the runes for him. This will be, to put it mildly, a very unconventional consultation, which builds up to an extremely surprising ending. The story is difficult to discuss without spoilers.Cappa's prose here is beautiful, appealing wonderfully to the senses; considered strictly in terms of style, she writes with a grace and felicity pretty much unequaled among other contemporary writers since Tanith Lee's untimely death. Here she also draws on a serious background of Viking mythology, with references to Odin's hanging on the world-tree Yggdrasil for 9 days (derived from the Old Norse poem "Havamni," or "Sayings of the High One" --it doesn't specify Yggdrasil as the tree, but scholars agree that's what is meant), his eight-legged steed Sleipnir, the malevolence of Loki, Odin's association with rune-craft. (Some references, like the idea of the Ship of the Dead and Odin's role as psychopomp, are new to me, but that's because I'm not as erudite in the lore as the author clearly is.) Indeed, the world view of the story seems more cast in terms of Viking myth, conceived as real, than in Christian terms, though there's some Christian terminology too.) A quibble that could be made is that the ending --and no spoilers here!-- depends on a deus ex machina (literally); but not all readers may take it that way. It's also been plausibly suggested that the story is better appreciated if it's just experienced on its own terms, letting oneself go with the flow of the narrative and language, rather than made to stand detailed analysis. This is also a really fast read (observing all of the classical unities); I read it easily in a single sitting, and was surprised that it went by so quickly. However, the e-book also contains a short bonus story, "Abasteron House," a prequel to the author's novel Night Sea Journey, and intended to whet reader's appetites for the latter. For readers completely new to Cappa's short fiction, this may not be the optimum place to start. My own suggestion would be to start with either "Beyond Castle Frankenstein" or "Between the Darkness and the Dawn," and work up to this one. But for readers who want to give this tale a try, I can verify that as of last night, it was still free on Amazon!

Healey owns noir in this unforgettable read By Hulegaard Books As a reader, Tony Healey has taken me on a variety of rides: we've traveled to the far reaches of space together, we've sought redemption together in medieval times, and we've even had romantic, sentimental journeys together. Tony tells gripping tales in every genre he touches, but my personal favorites are when he gets dark and gritty in the world of noir. Such is the case with "City of Night."Each story is interconnected, but shows a different side of the protagonist, Vince. I enjoyed every page, and found myself eager to turn to the next. The time spent with Vince is short, but in typical Tony Healey fashion, it's unapologetic and memorable. I love his style, and his voice never ceases to impress me.Healey adds another fantastic collection to his ever-growing body of work, and this one is worth every penny.
