7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A minor note By bukhtan Readers of Ana Maria Matute's stories (her most popular collection is "Historias de la Artamila") should be aware that this excellent book is *not* "todos [sus] cuentos", at least in the most common acceptance of the word "cuento". There is no overlap with the stories found in the beautiful collection "Puerta de la luna", (subtitled "completos", also misleadingly). That collection features rather short stories, over the whole. "Puerta" also includes a fair number of non-fiction pieces."Todos mis cuentos", on the other hand, features longer stories, with no non-fiction. Moreover, I should point out that the qualification "infantiles" in the blurb attached to the Amazon record (as well as the image on the cover) is a bit misleading; "Todos" are not necessarily for children only, though they do in fact seem to have been written principally for children. Conversely, children might enjoy many of the stories in "Puerta" as well.Overall, one might say that Matute's stories (not her novels) fall into that region, belletristically and psychologically, occupied by the stories of Hans Christian Anderson, the "Just so" stories of Kipling, and Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland". Sometimes, I even suspect that they were written in a sort of literary pose, as Peter Bichsel wrote his "Kindergeschichten". But perhaps I am just looking for excuses for a middle-aged person to read a book their own childhood was not long (or cosmopolitan) enough to reach.

Though Yornen Stilcho comes from a family whose obsession led enterprising ancestors to famous, spectacular, and rather terrifying deaths, he is himself a man of dubious talent and zero ambition. He likes when things come easy. So when invited to serve as the much-feasted, endlessly toasted, and libidinously indulged champion of this year’s Festival in Yent, Yornen can find no truly compelling reason to say no. The one unfortunate, itsy-bitsy downside is that—short of a miracle—he’ll be dead at the end. Written by the author of "The Conjurers" and "Wicked and Loving Lies," The Fete of Yent is a 5,000 word short story (approximately 20 pages).

Tradition, Conspiracy, and Coercion Drive This Entertaining Story By Dharma Kelleher Rich in description with a long, flowing style, Waid tells the tale of Yornen, a young man being coerced into climbing an impossible cliff. Prior to the fateful climb, the leader of the village hosts a festival in his honor. The story is amusing and entertaining with a few surprises for readers. The celebrity sacrifice part of the story reminds me of the Aztec culture.

By dltd Death of Rogues is the cleverly written story of Yornen Stilcho, a young man who accepts the challenge of climbing the cliff, The Tears of Pillar. He is almost certain to fall as his father and brothers have before him. No one has ever attempted scaling the cliffs and survived. During the two week festival that takes place before the scheduled climb, Yornen is treated like a hero. His every whim is catered to and the wagering on his climb is frenzied. ‘Given the certain history of the cliffs… there were no wagers placed that Yornen would succeed; there was only betting on how far above the stony base he would reach before plummeting to his death.’I couldn’t figure out how the author would end this, but he did it with a twist that I never saw coming. Loved it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Story! By Liz Marshall This did not feel like a short story at all. The author created a world, and I lived in it for a while. Nothing felt rushed, the words were lush, and the story was full of life and characters. The festival in the title refers to the last two weeks in the life of Yornen Stilcho, when the whole town celebrates his heroism and his every whim is indulged, for he is about to die. Probably. Because everyone who has ever attempted to climb the deadly cliff known as Pilar's Tears, including Yornen's father and brothers, has fallen to his death. The writer did a masterful job of building suspense, and I'll let you find out for yourself how it ended.

Includes: -Biography Description: In 1792 the townspeople of Issoudun enjoyed the services of a physician named Rouget, whom they held to be a man of consummate malignity. Were we to believe certain bold tongues, he made his wife extremely unhappy, although she was the most beautiful woman of the neighborhood. Perhaps, indeed, she was rather silly. But the prying of friends, the slander of enemies, and the gossip of acquaintances, had never succeeded in laying bare the interior of that household.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is the best place to start if you've never read Balzac By JG This is the best place to start if you've never read Balzac. The story has a bit of everything that makes for a compelling read, including some totally unexpected surprises. The author gets bogged down for a half dozen pages in the beginning discussing family relationships in order to set the stage. Don't worry about his attention to detail in that part. Keep going and soon enough the key characters will become totally familiar to you. From then on, it's a wonderful story, very pleasant to read. As always, Balzac the narrator, offers cutting insight into human behavior in the course of telling the tale. It's fascinating to learn how little has changed over the last 150 years when it comes to human nature. The study of the old miser and his pretty young ward who rules him with an iron hand is a riot. Who among us has never known an old man with money making a fool of himself over a young girl gold digger? Or a widow fawning over her neer-do-well son. Or a moral and talented artistic son neglected in lieu of his brazen, dishonest soldier brother. You almost want to cry out, "No! Don't fall for it!"

Under this title the author has grouped eight short stories. The tale which gives the book its name is a description of a man dying in the wilds of the Northwest by slow starvation. The concluding story, "Negore, the Coward," relates to the old days of the Russian occupancy of Alaska, and shows what a man will do to retain a woman's love and wipe from his name an undeserved affix.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Familiar Territory By Karl Janssen Love of Life is a collection of short stories published by Jack London in 1907. These eight stories are all set in Alaska or the Yukon Territory, with the exception of one set in northern California which also touches on the subject of the Klondike gold rush. Though overall not his best work, the collection contains a few exceptional pieces that elevate it above the mediocre.Three stories stand out here as a cut above the rest. In "Negore, the Coward," a tribe of indigenous Alaskans flees a troop of pursuing Russian conquerors. In order to win the heart of the woman he loves, the titular character must redeem his tarnished reputation by bravely ensnaring the oppressors. In "The Sun Dog Trail," London's recurring character Sitka Charley, a Native trail guide for hire, recalls how he led a mysterious rich woman back and forth across the frozen North on a grueling, epic manhunt. "The Unexpected" tells of a brutal act of violence in a remote cabin. The survivors are left to figure out what to do with the perpetrator. When so far removed from civilization, do conventional notions of law and justice still have any meaning? At the beginning of his career, London published four great collections of Klondike stories: The Son of the Wolf, The God of His Fathers, Children of the Frost, and The Faith of Men. Love of Life came out a few years later, and although it includes a few gems, overall these later stories are inferior to those earlier works, and often feel like rehashes of subjects already covered by London. "Brown Wolf," for example, covers ground previously trod by the novel White Fang. The north woods soap opera of "A Day's Lodging" is reminiscent of earlier tales of marital discontent like "The Priestly Prerogative" and "The Great Interrogation." And with "The White Man's Way," London has examined one too many times the Indian's perspective on those silly White men and their confusing laws. The story "Love of Life," though a rather well-written and suspenseful offering, amounts to little more than a preliminary attempt at the intense man vs. nature struggle that London would capture far more successfully a year later in his classic tale "To Build a Fire," only in this take the hero faces starvation rather than death by freezing. Of course, if you are approaching London's stories for the first time and have never read those other works, then Love of Life would most likely prove to be a thoroughly enjoyable read. Those who read a lot of London, however, will find that, judging by the standards of the master's work as a whole, Love of Life is a satisfying collection of stories, but not one of his best books overall.

Gorgeous easy to follow recipes By Miriam Wild I am a terrible cook but this cookbook is so well written and straightforward, I made the most delicious vegan meals that I will be making over and over again forever! And I'm not even vegan! Delicious.

By Shari Steele I have loved reading this intriguing cookbook but I must say I haven't committed to trying any of them. It is complicated and the ingredients lists are somewhat daunting even though I make curries and Thai food occasionally, this seems like a lot to take on.

The people who inhabit Jerry Gabriel’s second collection of stories, The Let Go, strain against their historical moments. A poacher’s daughter, a disgraced vet, an out–of–work temp, a professor, a middle–school basketball ace: these are the Great Let Go in whose embattled existence we feel the impact of war, financial crises, and the many lesser perils that attend life. With equal measures of tenderness, ruthlessness, and humor, Gabriel illuminates an Ohio landscape—its cities, suburbs, and countryside—fraught with economic disparity, its characters facing their dilemmas with grief, with anger, but always exhibiting a surprising fortitude. In these seven taut stories, Gabriel writes hardship as a site of hope.

Poignant, understated fiction -- a gem of a collection By lscollison This second collection of short stories from the author of Drowned Boy, recipient of the Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction, captured my attention from the very beginning. Each story is about a different character and situation, yet most of the people he writes about are somehow marginalized and struggling against the tide. His characters, his plain but evocative settings, his spare but freighted dialogue reveal the hidden corners of our humanity, shedding light on the longings, the desires, the want that we all know. He deals with issues -- bigotry, ignorance, social class, apathy – without ever mentioning them by name, without judgement, but with occasional gleams of wry humor. I identified with his narrators, felt their despair and their realization, their coming to terms with life. I finished the book and began to re-read, savoring little gems of description, characterization, and meaning.

By GoodDirt So many short stories out there can be classified as "melancholy" or "thought-provoking," but so few of them can also say that they rely on more than melancholy to be thought-provoking. These seven stories manage that, and the characters within them, as a whole, may not be struggling with anything you or I will ever struggle with, but we are left feeling as if we have something in common with them.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An outstanding read from start to finish. By Jim Ruland Fantastic collection of long short stories that explores life's twists and turns with humor, wit and a touch of strangeness. Short stories are shorter than they were a decade ago; The Let Go bucks this trend with tales that are between 25 and 40 page but are deeply satisfying. I've been reading Gabriel's work for 20 years but all of these stories are new to me; an English tutor suffering from panic attacks falls for an the wife of a Korean scientist; a solider returns to Ohio from Desert Storm with an other than honorable discharge; a couple move into a house in the country only to discover that it sits above a miniature yet fully functioning factory. An outstanding read from start to finish.

Salisbury is an Ex-Aerospace Engineer as well as U.S. Intelligence. He has written over 30 books. He wrote Aerospace Engineering for Dummies as well as Quantum Physics for Dummies. He resides in Nevada as well as Southern California (Yucca Valley) and is a whistleblower. He recently found out that Alex Jones works for Time Warner Cable which means Jones is a controlled opposition and lies about 20 percent of the time. Jones will not expose flat earth or satellites because of his employer TIME WARNER CABLE. Unfortunately who also owns CNN. You may want to type in right about now, Operation Mockingbird. However, we will cover that later... “Time warner cable is part of the “Big 6” that control what the world sees and hears. So beware of Alex Jones, he caught me by surprise as I was once a big fan...He is an actor that lied to us all and was supposed to be on the good side” -Brett Salisbury C.S.N. C-3 NASA just announced that the earth is "Pear Shaped" (Absurd). Also please note: The reviews are starting to come in with people who have not read the book. The book is NOT based on bible references, but do offer a few at key points. There are current experiments in the book that prove the earth is not spinning AT ALL. Remember, people are offended when you tell them NASA is a joke and that it's not possible for anything to survive in the thermosphere. They begin to "troll" the works written but never prove anything. Read for yourself and see what conclusion(s) you have about the axis spinning ball globe. It's truly ludicrous. Also preview the kindle edition (even if you don't buy that version) as it will show in color and more detail with links about the book. This is the second major work by this author (The First Gene: The Birth of Programming, Messaging and Formal Control) and it addresses the most fundamental questions remaining for life origin research: How did molecular evolution generate metabolic recipe and instructions using a representational symbol system? How did prebiotic nature set all of the many configurable switch-settings to integrate so many interdependent circuits? How did inanimate nature sequence nucleotides to spell instructions to the ribosomes on how to sequence amino acids into correctly folding protein molecular machines? How did nature then code these symbol-system instructions into Hamming block codes, to reduce noise pollution in the Shannon channel? What programmed the error-detection and error-correcting software that keeps life from quickly deteriorating into non-life from so many deleterious mutations? In short, which of the four known forces of physics organized and prescribed life into existence? Was it gravity? Was it the strong or weak nuclear force? Was it the electromagnetic force? How could any combination of these natural forces and force fields program decision nodes to prescribe future utility? Why and how would a prebiotic environment value, desire or seek to generate utility? Can chance and/or necessity (law) program or prescribe sophisticated biofunction? The most plaguing problem of life origin science remains: What programmed, in a prebiotic environment, the Primordial Prescription and Processing of such sophisticated, integrated biofunction? That is the subject of this book.

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Cybernetics disproves evolutionism By Darbesio Eugenio The belief that biological organization, from cells to organisms, in a crescendo of functional complexity, might be due to unguided natural forces only is nonsense. Just the formation of a single initial cell implies what the author of this book calls "primordial prescription". Some of many scientific points in the book are:The most fundamental principle of science is the F>P principle (formalism is in causation anterior to physicality). (By "formalism" he means abstract, conceptual, non physical unconstrained choice contingent controls.)Life origin is about initial prescription and its processing (P & Po).Only P & Po could have generated the formal organization, the hierarchy of functions, the highly integrated services and strictly coordinate tasks necessary to life.Life is highly controlled, regulated and computational.Biological systems are fundamentally cybernetic (cybernetics is the study of control and regulation).Life is genomically and epigenomically controlled and regulated.Organization must never be confused with spontaneous self-ordering in nature.Inanimate nature is blind to formalisms.Self-organization is self-contradictory concept.Nothing can self-organize itself into existence from non existence. An effect, such organization, cannot be causa sui.Genomes consist of programmed instructions and controls.Molecules cannot organize themselves into long-term sophisticated architectural systems and machines. The second law of statistical thermodynamics states a tendency towards disorganization that precluded sustained primordial spontaneous self-organization.Only formalism, not physicodynamics is capable of generating true organization....I suggest reading this scientific book to whoever wants to really understand what biological complexity entails, explained with the jargon of modern science, engineering and technology. It is a reading that destroys once and for all the errors and illusions of biological evolutionism.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Prescription for a paradigm shift By Mario A. Lopez Life is more complex than we could have ever imagined and certainly far more complex that Darwin ever imagined. The scientific literature on this topic is replete with facile oversimplifications of what we are actually observing and no other topic deserves our closest attention.Abel is extremely meticulous in presenting for us the real difficulty that surrounds the origin of life. "Life...," he tells us, "is not about information!" "Life origin is about initial Prescription, and about the Processing of that initial prescription."Abel convincingly demonstrates that only this primordial prescription and its initial processing could have "generated the first formal organization, sophisticated function, and the first non-trivial useful work."Abel goes into what prescription entails and how it relates to the origin of life from different angles. He argues that "[l]ife is fundamentally cybernetic" and, therefore, "life-origin science must seek to explain how the first primordial cell (the effect) was caused (programmed and processed into existence)."Abel is devastatingly original and his work will surely shake many esteemed dogmas. There is no doubt some hesitance, but perhaps even more resistance to a forthcoming paradigm shift, not only in origin of life research but also in the biology departments with respect to the origin of life and its diversification. This book is a must read for scientists interested in fresh and robust ideas. It is certainly not for those who submissively nod to the popular theories of the scientific establishment, or those who stubbornly grip the carcasses of long dead theories in the hope that their warmth will restore them back to life.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Life out of inanimate matter? By Felipe Aizpún The author of "The First Gene" offers us again an illuminating reflection on the problems and challenges that must be addressed when presenting an explanatory proposal on the origins of life in our Universe. To understand the emergence of life and to understand the successive appearance of increasingly complex and sophisticated living forms, it is first necessary to fully understand what life is, and what are the features and characteristics of living forms, something that must be accounted for in terms of causality.David Abel presents a thoroughly and comprehensive approach to this issue. On page 191 the author proposes a summary of the minimum biological functions that need to be explained in terms of causation and concludes convincingly that all life processes are ultimately cybernetic product of Choice Determinism, not the effect of random or necessary events. All processes are oriented towards the aim of pursuing survival (metabolism and homeostatic balance) as well as continuity in being through reproduction. These processes are governed by formalisms that prescribe biological events through prescription and processing of body functions. As the author rightly states, explaining the emergence of life must go beyond the mere recognition of the existence of informational resources in biology.Abel says: “The real issue is how current Prescription and Its Processing arose spontaneously out of chance and necessity sufficient to organize and bring life into such tightly regulated existence.”A must read for anyone interested in a critical analysis of current naturalistic models of the genesis of life in an inanimate world.

Jazmine is a smart, driven young black woman on a missions trip to South Africa. What she expected was a vacation with some hard work now and then. What she got instead was a mother deathly ill and more stress than she's ever dealt with.

When her wealthy neighbor finds her distraught, he brings her home to make her soup. Not realizing she's never had alcohol before, he offers her some wine and she doesn't react well to it. The next thing she knows, she wakes up in his bed.

Will Jazmine accept Richard's interest in her? Is Richard really willing to settle for someone so much younger than him? Can love grow in a foreign country before both of them have to go home?

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Is Thee More To This Story?! By postcrdprincess The plot for this story was definitely different. A well dressed man walks into a women's homeless shelter and picks a young woman he doesn't know to have his baby.My problem with the story, is that it was too short. It doesn't have an HEA and I'm not sure if there is another book to continue the story. I hope there is because it would be definitely interesting to find how things work out for (hero) Derrick and (heroine) Rachel.

How is information stored and retrieved from long-term memory? It is argued that any systematic attempt to answer this question should be based on a particular set of specific representational assumptions that have led to the development of a new memory theory -- the connectivity model. One of the crucial predictions of this model is that, in sharp contrast to traditional theories, the speed of processing information increases as the amount and complexity of integrated knowledge increases. In this volume, the predictions of the model are examined by analyzing the results of a variety of different experiments and by studying the outcome of the simulation program CONN1, which illustrates the representation of complex semantic structures. In the final chapter, the representational assumptions of the connectivity model are evaluated on the basis of neuroanatomical and physiological evidence -- suggesting that neuroscience provides valuable knowledge which should guide the development of memory theories.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. german scholarship at its best By barryb An example of excellent German scholarship. Klimesch puts long -term memory in its context first by explicating short-term memory and encoding issues. He then presents a generic connectionist model; and then finally relates that to a specific semantic model. He spells out his assumptions as he goes, which is helpful. I found his presentation directly relevant to Hegel, which I preferred. A well balanced presentation. I strongly recommend this book, in the strongest sense. and all back in 1994.
