As an expat in China, I now find myself wondering about the stories of random people I see on the subway, at the vegetable market or at bars and restaurants as I go about my daily life - I've even projected these characters onto them, pretending they are the real-life Guojun or wondering if they're actually a Jessica when you get to know them. I wonder: am I passing by a haircutter poet every day without even realizing it? It can be so easy to set up self-preserving barriers, or lack of concern for the multitudes around me, to keep life in a densely populated city from getting under my skin. This author has helped lift some of these veils and given me a new appreciation for simple interactions. This is because she has a much deeper understanding of Chinese culture, language and personalities than most expats living here.I would thoroughly enjoy this book even if it didn't hit so close to home; her writing has a minimalist style punctuated with expressive and colorful phrases. She writes with the unrelenting precision of a cynic yet still portrays the lives of her characters with a sense of underlying optimism, hope and appreciation. She paints such realistic pictures with her words that it's easy to forget the stories are fictional.I wish the book were longer, and I look forward to reading more stories by this author.

Lincoln has remarkable insight into the minds of both expats and locals living in Beijing, China. She brings to life the inner monologues of the strangers we pass every day, challenging the generalizations we sometimes accept a little too readily. The compelling characters, dry humor, and well-paced writing keep the stories flowing and make each deserving of multiple reads. Highly recommended.

By The Good Doctor These are deeply personal narratives on expat life in Beijing, specifically from a female perspective. Lincoln pulls no punches and as a reader you're the better off for it. Highly recommended for anyone who's lived abroad in Asia, or for people who enjoy complicated, frank, and sometimes awkward looks at relationships. Five stars.
