In this sweet, petite collection of essays and recipes, Alice Waters showcases the simple building-block ingredients she uses to create gratifying, impromptu meals all year long. In her most intimate and compelling cookbook yet, Alice invites readers to step not into the kitchen at Chez Panisse, but into her own, sharing how she shops, stores, and prepares the pantry staples and preserves that form the core of her daily meals.  Ranging from essentials like homemade chicken stock, red wine vinegar, and tomato sauce to the unique artisanal provisions that embody Alice’s unadorned yet delightful cooking style, she shows how she injects even simple meals with nuanced flavor and seasonal touches year-round.  From fresh cheeses to quick pickles to sweets and spirits, these often-used ingredients are, as she explains, the key to kitchen spontaneity when combined with simple grains, vegetables, and other staple items.  With charming pen-and-ink illustrations by her daughter, Fanny and Alice’s warm, inviting tone, the latest book from our most influential proponent of simple, organic cooking ensures a gracious, healthy meal is always within reach.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Good recipes for pantry items By Brenda N. This is, for the most part, a great book for those wanting to keep a pantry and make their own items for the pantry. The book is by Alice Waters, whom I have long admired for the way she helped change how America looked at food. The charming illustrations are by her daughter, Fanny Singer. The chapters are: Spice Mixtures and Condiments Nuts Beans and Other Legumes Savory Preserves Whole Grains Preserved Fish and Meat Cheese Sweet PreservesWe are told how to make everything from Za'atar, to apple peel cider vinegar, to almond milk, to hummus, to zucchini pickles, to gravlax, to ricotta and yogurt, to vanilla extract and lovage syrup. I plan to make the lovage syrup when my lovage (hopefully) returns next Spring.A lot of reviewers said that the book was not what they expected and I admit to having the same feelings. I knew the recipes would include a lot of those which are more West Coast than my own Midwestern style of cooking. That is fine. But the more I thought about what the book was missing, I kept coming back to my desire for... lists. While some items are discussed, what would have been helpful is to have actual lists of what items are in Alice Waters pantry. What kind of olive oil is there? What types of salt exactly does she feel are important? What particular spices and herbs could one find on the shelf?Having said that, as with Alice Waters other books, it makes for enjoyable reading. This book was provided by Blogging For Books for review but the opinions are my own.

HOWEVER, as a huge canner, and obsessive pantry manager, this was THE most disappointing book this year. I found it dummied in recipes, approach and overall material was lack lustre. Please don't give up on Ms. Waters, but otherwise, my personal feeling is that this book is not worth the purchase.

21 of 26 people found the following review helpful. I was very disappointed with the content of this book By Vincent Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with the content of this book. Though sub-titled "Homemade Ingredients That Make Simple Meals Your Own" the book is more a cookbook of recipes that though fairly simple, are not staples of a pantry. I was expecting maybe Ms. Waters' take on choosing good oils especially olive oils or preserved fruits to keep on hand for example. Instead there are far too many recipes for perishables that might not fit the category of "pantry". The writing is beautiful though but alas the content not that useful.Vincent: Princeton Jct., NJ

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. and efforts to summarise waste valorization and address dispense hygiene were particularly valuable By Freebeerforall The scope of the text is admirable, and efforts to summarise waste valorization and address dispense hygiene were particularly valuable. If I'm being picky though, the initial chapter on yeast is not written at a level of detail commensurate with the rest of the book. I came away thinking that the main reason to purchase this book is to read the review of waste valorization, but that on its own does not fully justify the hefty $200 price tag.

The variety is entertaining, the brevity a challenge the authors rose to, and the theme has interpretations both lighthearted and serious that worked equally well. One of the better anthos I’ve read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. there’s some really good stuff here By W Spice Not surprisingly, given some of the authors included and, as editor, Lori L. Lake’s imprimatur, so to speak, there’s some really good stuff here. Originally, I was going to comment on each story, but that got a little unwieldy, so I’ll limit it to the ones I most enjoyed.Elizabeth Sims’ story has the wise-cracking humor you’d expect if you’ve read any of her excellent Lillian Byrd novels. Not everything is fun and games of course. In an introspective moment, our narrator admits, “I’d pretended not to want to be liked so expertly for so long that most people took me literally and simply didn’t like me.” The ending is a tad cynical, too, but “Untold Riches” is still a very enjoyable read.“Colt .45” is different from Carsen Taite’s novels which feature attorneys, usually criminal defense attorneys. This brief glimpse of Luca Bennett definitely makes me want to check out the novels in which she’s the main character. Crisp, hard-boiled writing and an intriguing protag. Only complaint: not much drama or suspense; more of a confrontation between Luca and the bail-jumper would’ve been nice.I’m a great admirer of Andi Marquette’s work, and you can add “The Falcone Maltese” to the list, now, too. Fun, cute story. While the story lines of Marquette’s works are always entertaining and quite often compelling, her characters are the best part of her stories and this little short is no exception, showing – no surprise here – she can write credible, engaging YA characters just as well as she does adults. Wouldn’t mind encountering these two again somewhere down the road, with Jo joining Nattie in her future sleuthing as their relationship develops.Another very fine story – I’m beginning to realize the debt we owe our editors for bring us this excellent collection -- Linda M Vogt’s “Roar,” is based on an actual event. The skillful writing moves things along briskly and captures not only the women’s terror, but also the resolve of the narrator to get them out their dire circumstances alive. It’s also a cautionary tale worth reading. I’m sure I’ll sample more from Vogt at some point.VK Powell’s very brief “Just Desserts” hit home; it’s hard to think of anything I find more abhorrent than child abuse. What’s clever about the story, of course, is the open ending. Most mysteries are resolved by story's end, but not this one. Was Langley’s death accidental, or was the chocolatier français aware of the man’s deathly allergy to nuts, perhaps having overheard Cutter’s conversation with the bailiff? Will Syl reveal her suspicions to the detectives investigating Langley’s death? Will the ME find the death accidental? A lot of substance in such a small package. Nicely done.Lynn Ames “It’s a Dog’s Life” is based on the sort of literary conceit that would be a major fail in the hands of many writers but Ames executes it quite nicely. Even if the putative “crime” being committed here is a little off-the-wall, as are the perps, it’s a sweet story and, in a world that seems worse every time you read the news, a little sweet can’t hurt.Jen Wright’s “Lost” is a bit more complex than most of the stories here. While on the surface it’s a well-crafted adventure tale with plenty of suspense, the narrator also has moments of quiet introspection about the nature of friendship, among other things; Wright does a good job blending these two story elements. As a great admirer of the outdoors and a sometime paddler, the setting added considerably to my enjoyment. To say I absolutely love JM Redmann’s Micky Knight series is in no way an exaggeration. In fact, the visceral emotional impact of Death by the Riverside is what attracted me to fiction with lesbian characters – god, I hate the term lesfic! – in the first place. “The Curious Case of the Disappearing Dildoes,” as well as another short story featuring the same narrator, prove Redmann is equally at home with more light-hearted fare. To quote Faith from Buffy, The Vampire Slayer – was it really sixteen years ago? – this one’s “a hoot and a half.” Despite the tone, though, it’s still a well thought-out and cleverly solved mystery; the surrounding zaniness is simply lagniappe. As different as the parable of the purloined plastic pleasurers is from Redmann’s novels, Katherine V. Forrest’s “Jessie” is classic Kate Delafield save for the setting. And that means it’s very good indeed. Forrest’s ground-breaking Delafield novels still rank at the very top rung of police procedurals with lesbian protagonists and I don’t think it’s at all a disparagement to Claire McNab, Gerri Hill, Baxter Clare or Radclyffe to suggest that KVF’s series is, arguably, still the best. This new addition, “Jessie,” is every bit as good as the novels. As a pioneer in this genre, Forrest deserves to be included in any collection such as this.Again, these are my personal favorites and exclusion isn't meant to in any way imply the other stories are bad. If I omitted one of your own faves, mea culpa, and should we ever meet up, the Starbucks is on me.Kudos, as well as many thinks, to Lake and Chandler for bringing us such a fine collection of stories. Definitely worth your time.

This is an easy to read book with plenty of time to reflect on each story. Once you start a story you won't want to put it down but at the end of each story it's easy to complete another task and go back to reading when you want too. I recommend this to everyone it's funny and a delight to read.

Amazon.com Review Take a trip to last century's Alaska through Muir's clean, easy-going, enthusiastic prose. He wrote the way he took pictures, with insight, attention, care and genuine feeling. It's a lovely look into a beautiful land and its inhabitants the way it used to be, told in a flowing narrative that is far less rushed than contemporary travel tales.

With a deft hand, the team that brought the first environmental radio drama to the BBC (Producer Mara Purl, Foley artist David L. Krebs, composer Marilyn Harris and engineer Bill Berkuta) are joined by NPR announcer and famed actor Lee Salisbury. The project is further enhanced by the visual artistry of Dave Zaboski best known for his animation work at Disney, Warner Brothers and Sony Pictures.

It's a worthwhile read in its own right, don't get me wrong. But read _My First Summer in the Sierra_ or a Muir biography like Michael P. Cohen's _The Pathless Way_ before you move on to this one. Get a good dose of what the naturalist is like and learn some of his background, and then you'll be in the proper frame of mind to tackle _Travels in Alaska_. Otherwise, this book is just one glacier after another. And bless his heart, Muir wants to see them all. And climb them and explore them and sketch them and hike their entire lengths and write about them ad nauseum. He leaves his companions in his wake and puts himself squarely in the face of isolated danger over and over again. Read this book first, and you'll think he's insane. Know his roots in Wisconsin and his good work in California, and you'll be better able to appreciate what he thinks of and does in the Alaska of the late 1800s.

Yet significant aspects I remember well. Given Muir's exuberance for life and almost everything he encounters in his travels, one almost looses view of Muir the botanist and geologist. But not quite. Here we find the author contemplating the activity of glaciers and documenting the flora of southeast Alaska. Muir (who tended strongly toward vegetarianism) gleefully entertaining himself by foiling duck hunters. Baffling the locals by happily wandering out into major storms. The book is a journal of Muir's 1879, 1880, and 1890 trips (he wouldn't mind if we called them adventures) to SE Alaska's glaciers, rivers, and temperate rain forests. He died while preparing this volume for publication.I remind myself, and anyone reading this, that Muir isn't for every reader. And, as other reviewers have stated, this may not be the volume in which to introduce oneself to the one-of-a-kind John Muir. One reviewer doesn't think that Muir is entirely credible in these accounts. I won't say whether or not this is wrong, but I tend to a different view. For some of us -- and certainly for Muir -- wilderness is a medicine, a spiritual tonic, so to speak. For the individual effected in this way, physical impediments and frailties rather dissolve away when he is alone in wildness. I once heard Graham Mackintosh (author of Into a Desert Place) speak of this. In all of his travels alone in the desert, he doesn't recall having ever been sick. This may not sound credible to some, but I strongly suspect it is true.If you like Muir's writings, read this book. If you like the stuff of Best Sellers, perhaps you should look elsewhere.

Mahoney The beauty of this wonderful reprinting is how it shows John Muir as a person, how it helps us to understand the dynamic and overwhelming beauty of Alaska, and the changes in the people of Alaska. Muir's complete, tireless, and joyful commitment to nature comes through on every page. The book unintentionally provides an excellent portrait of the kind of inexhaustible devotion it takes to change the world as did Muir. The book also provides a stunning portrait of Alaska in the latter part of the 19th Century and allows one to compare the Alaska of those days with Alaska of earlier times and of today. The biggest changes are in the glaciers and in the people. The glaciers have receded dramatically as a natural part of their centuries' long retreat. It is interesting to compare what Muir saw with the experience of Vancouver almost exactly 100 years earlier (ca. 1793). Vancouver could hardly enter Glacier Bay. Muir could enter quite some distance, but the glaciers were still the dominant features. Today, the glaciers have largely receded into deep valleys. Muir encountered people in Alaska living largely as they had for centuries. They were hunters and fishermen and lived in small groups along the shore line. As Jonathan Raban points out in the intricately woven fabric of his sublime book "Passage to Juneau," the people of southeast Alaska considered the sea to be the real environment of their lives while the land was considered dangerous and unknowable. They lived along the shore and knew how to live off and with the sea year round. The lives of the Alaskan people are very different today but greatly influenced by the past. Raban often characterizes Muir's writing as overblown and florid. However, it is a portrait of a man, a maritime land and a people. To do justice to those three, the book had to be what it is - an astonishingly colorful and detailed portrait in words.

Review "Her (Cradit's) talent for creating atmosphere rivals Daphne du Maurier. This is modern Gothic with fierce smarts. Can't say it enough. I loved this book."- Christopher Rice, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Heavens Rise"It takes a great writer like Cradit to weave the threads of so many characters into an enjoyable story. I have no doubt that the name Cradit will one day be associated with the echelon of gothic fiction writers, namely Radcliffe, Blackwood, and Rice."- Becket, Bestselling Author and Assistant to Anne Rice"Sarah Cradit's writing is tight and masterful. Her keen sense of how to pace a book and her ability to use just the right language to express the desires, fears and hopes of her characters is flawless."- Ionia Martin, Vine Top 100 Reviewer, Readful Things"Cradit does an incredible job of building suspense. It's a slow, moody, edge of your seat suspense with a palpable sense of foreboding. This atmosphere kicks the book off and slowly escalates as you sink deeper into it."- Julie Whiteley, Clue Review"The books are well written, the plot flows so quickly that you reach the end of the story well before you are ready and without realizing how much time has gone by since you were enchanted, committed and flung into the world of the Sullivan's, Deschanel's and their friends. You become a part of their lives as you are reading the books and think about the characters long after you have finished reading the book."- Stephenee Carsten, Nerd Girl Official"The writing is top-notch, the story gripping and fast-paced, and the character development incredible. I will be impatiently awaiting the next installment."- Teri Polen, Books & Such

About the Author Sarah is the USA Today Bestselling Author of the Paranormal Southern Gothic series, The House of Crimson & Clover, born of her combined passion for New Orleans, and the mysterious complexity of human nature. Her work has been described as rich, emotive, and highly dimensional. An unabashed geek, Sarah enjoys studying obscure subjects like the Plantagenet and Ptolemaic dynasties, and settling debates on provocative Tolkien topics such as why the Great Eagles are not Gandalf's personal taxi service. Passionate about travel, Sarah has visited over twenty countries collecting sparks of inspiration (though New Orleans is where her heart rests). She's a self-professed expert at crafting original songs to sing to her very patient pets, and a seasoned professional at finding ways to humiliate herself (bonus points if it happens in public). Insightful bundle of vignettes about key characters in the exciting House of Crimson and Clover series By Xkoqueen A collection of lagniappes from Sarah Cradit's House of Crimson and Clover series.Flourish: The Story of Anne Fontaine was originally published with the title Beyond Dusk: Anne (House of Crimson and Clover)Beyond Dusk is the second book in the House of Crimson and Clover series by Sarah Cradit. It is a crisply written novella that ties up a few loose ends from book one, St. Charles at Dusk. This series is best read in order to appreciate how the story unfolds. In Beyond Dusk, we learn more about Anne Fontaine and a her mother Angelique. Anne's upbringing by a domineering mother clearly impacts her self-worth, but with her mother dead and buried, she now has the freedom to learn more about her biological father and the interesting traits she has inherited from his gene pool. To say more would spoil the read. The novella is short which makes the concise writing all the more impressive. It provides an interesting peak into both the Deschanel and Fontaine families that I'm sure will come to play in later books. The Deschanel skepticism is all too present and the weird, slightly uncomfortable situation it creates was fabulously written.I have thoroughly enjoyed all three of the books in the series that I have read, and Beyond Dusk has made me hungry to continue on with the series.Surrender:This is a short story companion to the House of Crimson and Clover series by Sarah Credit It tells of one night between key characters, Oz and Ana. Oz, Ana, and her brother, Nicholas, have been best friends since the beginning. At age sixteen, Nicholas realizes Oz loves Ana, and he gives him the nod to pursue his sister. Too worried that he’ll screw up his friendship with Ana, Oz does nothing about his infatuation, and she ends up going to the prom with another boy. When events lead to Ana and Oz being alone in the hotel after the after prom party what follows is a night they'll never forget. I love how Sarah explains so much in a short story and now we understand the dynamics better between the three of them. I truly enjoy Sarah Cradit’s character explorations through her lagniappes about the Deschanel clan.Shame:Shame: The Story of Jonathan St. Andrews is a short story installment to the House of Crimson and Clover series by Sarah Credit. The series is primarily set in New Orleans, La, however, this short story and The Storm and the Darkness are set on a small island off the coast of Maine. To appreciate this book to the fullest, you need to be fully vested in the House of Crimson and Clover series; to read Shame: The Story of Jonathan St. Andrews as a stand alone short story, will not do it justice.Readers of the series first met Jonathan St. Andrews in The Storm and the Darkness. He is quiet and keeps to himself to the point of being hermit-like. He lacks social skills and prefers the animals in his veterinary practice to humans. Shame is Jonathan St. Andrews’ back story. The details behind how he became such a recluse with a harden heart. The Storm and the Darkness was one of my favorite in the series, and I really appreciated the character insight that Shame: The Story of Jonathan St. Andrews gave me. Jonathan became a much more sympathetic character after reading this short story. Not only do readers get into Jonathan’s head, but there is some great development of an ancillary characters, Alex Whitman and Carla Edgewater.Fire and Ice:I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest reviewFire and Ice by Sarah Cradit is an extremely short character back story of the Fontenot Twins, Remy and Fleur. The twins are minor secondary characters in Ms. Cradit's House of Clrimson and Clover series. This attention to the twins might mean they will have a larger role in the culmination of this series. The writing is technically good, and I would have appreciated this entertaining vignette more if the characters had bigger roles in the main series. Devotees of the series learn of the twins supernatural powers and the fontenot clan's affinity for kinky games at their annual Mardis Gras party. Some of the main characters in the series make brief appearances in this short story.Sarah Cradit has created interesting characters, and she has diligently provided detailed settings and back stories for the characters. I'm looking forward to Ms. Cradit returning to the main story and providing her readers with an epic culmination to this series.Dark Blessing:Sarah Cradit's Dark Blessings is a "lagniappe". It is a vignette that introduces us to more characters that will add to the complexity of her House of Crimson and Clover series. Dark Blessings does not advance the overall plot of the series, and because there currently is no tie in to the main story line, it can be read as a stand alone short story.Kelley, Kieran, and Dillon are triplets, and they are related to the Sullivan clan through their mother. As young boys, they were fascinated by vampires. As they grow up, only Kelley remains enthralled with vampires. When he is sought out by Queen Edith, he takes advantage of her knowledge in order to meet Vincenc, one of the oldest vampires around.Vincent and Kelley make a deal that I am sure will somehow impact the House of Crimson and Clover series later on. We will all have to keep reading this involved series to find out how it all evolves!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Quite the collection! By Akasha Vampyrssa Flourish:I've always wondered what happened between the space of Adrianne leaving Anne and coming home. Well, apparently, Anne had the same curiosity. In this excerpt you get to find out how Anne comes "home" and leads so much more than she could have ever, had she stayed in the bayou. This is a quick read and, as all of these books do, fill in the blanks! I love these stories!!!!Surrender:Do you remember your first time? Were you excited? Were you scared? What happens if you were such an introvert, you couldn't see the love, one of your best friends has for you? Ana Deschanel is just coming of age. It's hard enough to cross the threshold of girlhood to adulthood, but she is faced with the man, she thought was her best friend, becoming the one to take her over that threshold. Fall in love with Ana and Oz's story! I know I did :).Shame:Jon St. Andrews is a kid just trying to graduate...better, yet, survive high school. He is bullied by none other than the most popular boy, Lionel Shepard. But what Lionel doesn't know, is while he has the most beautiful girl in school, on his arm, her mind could not be further from him. After a particularly bad fight between Carla and Lionel, Carla wonders down to the beach. By chance, it is Jon's beach. A chance meeting or did the fates intervene? A heartbreaking tale of love, betrayal, fear, and the biggest secret that may just tear Jon St. Andrews apart, lies ahead in Shame.Fire & Ice:What a tasty little extension of our beloved Crimson and Clover series. This little gem is properly titled as you will find yourself heating up and in need of some serious cooling off! Quick read and well worth it!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I love every single one of Sarah's stories By Kristy Feltenberger Gillespie I love every single one of Sarah's stories!Shame- After reading The Storm and the Darkness, I wondered why Jonathan St. Andrews felt such incredible darkness. After reading Shame, I understand why. "There is no meaning to be found in others...None. There is nothing but ourselves and our darkness. I knew this already, but I'll not ever let myself forget it again." (74) After Jon's story, I feel more empathy for him and his dark past. Once again, an excellent tale from Ms. Cradit!Surrender- I absolutely love the House of Crimson & Clover series. Ana is one of my favorite characters because on the outside she's a woman who seemingly has it all- beauty, wealth, education- and yet on the inside she's deeply flawed & her own worst enemy. Nicholas is a trip as usual, Oz is an all around stand up guy, just like his cousin Clancy (who was introduced in this short story). However, I feel the need to warn readers who haven't read a novel by Sarah M. Cradit- once you read one, you'll quickly devour the rest of the series, then you'll have to wait patiently for the next. Fortunately Sarah doesn't make her readers wait too long for the next novel!Flourish- Beyond Dusk: Anne is A House of Crimson and Clover Novelette which may be read as a stand alone. However, the series is fantastic and once you read one of the books in the series, you'll surely read them all. This novelette tells the story of Anne Fontaine, Adrienne and Nicholas Deschanel's half sister, who travels to New Orleans to meet with Adrienne. Unlike her half siblings who reside in an exquisite plantation home, Anne grew up in a shack in the Louisiana bayou. Now that her mother is dead and her brother is moving on to Baton Rouge, Anne no longer feels tied to her childhood home. However, meeting with Adrienne is no easy feat. In fact, Anne has to communicate through Adrienne's husband, Oz Sullivan, and her brother Nicholas Deschanel, in order to speak with her sister. Over the years a number of women have claimed familial ties to the incredibly wealthy Deschanel family, so it makes sense that Oz and Nicholas are weary.Nicholas follows Anne to a bar and attempts to fill her with liquor because alcohol after all is truth serum, and he's convinced that she's simply another con artist. However, when Nicholas meets Anne, he realizes that there's something different about her and finds her strangely attractive. After multiple shots of liquor, Nicholas drives Anne back to the Deshanel plantation, where Anne has an intense reaction. Nicholas realizes that Anne is in fact a Deschanel, for supernatural powers is a family trait.I enjoyed Beyond Dusk: Anne which was a quick but powerful read that allowed me to get to know Anne's fascinating story. I definitely recommend this novelette as well as the Crimson and Clover series as a whole.Fire and Ice- Fleur Fontenot has the gift of ice and her twin brother has the gift of fire. The Fontenot twins are used to getting what they want, but in the Fire and Ice novella, neither do. Fire and Ice is a quick, exciting read and I was only disappointed when it ended.Dark Blessing- I loved meeting new characters in Dark Blessing. Kelley Landry has 2 identical brothers who know what they want to do- one's a scholar and the other is an athlete. Kelley on the other hand is still researching vampire lore like he and his brothers did when they were kids. When Kelley meets Edith, a fellow vampire researcher and a very good one at that, she convinces him to travel with her to meet an actual vampire. I'm curious to find out what happens in the sequel because Dark Blessing is so interesting.

Stucker I have read the majority of Linda Rettstatt's books and love them, and this novelette will not disappoint. Two nosy nuns getting themselves in a heap of trouble and letting their imaginations go bonkers is entertaining and a fun read. I especially loved the scene in the bar when Gabby and Mary Jo are trying to play detective and find out information--too cute for words. I also think that the characterizations of these two along with a couple of other nuns in the convent serve as a reminder that nuns are first & foremost people too, with all their attendant charms, vices, quirks, and "habits." Thanks for the laughs and looking forward to Book #2.

The characters created a truly wonderful story, conflict between most of the most intense of them create events that make you stay with your heart in your neck, waiting for the next step. The author of this book have done a good job developing a true romance that sticks to the plot while creating a suspense that makes the reader want to continue until the end. PDF Ebook Challenger Unbound, by Michael R Brush, J R Campbell, Tom English, Ian Faulkner, Rhys Hughes, Paul Lewis, Bob Lock, Steve Lockley, Harding McFadden, Ian Millsted, Simon Kurt Unsworth

In these twelve stories you have it all: from Simon Kurt Unsworth's gripping tale to Paul Lewis's eerie Cthulhuic River of Bones, the diabolic The Damnation Gate to a blood-curdling yarn from Ian Millsted. There is sci-fi to steampunk; taking Professor George Edward Challenger from before The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle to stories beyond When the World Screamed...

There are stories for the purists, like Challenger and The Isle Out of Time, to those who want to rip up the canon with Tom English's Challenger of Two Worlds. What has been cared for is the central characters - these are the heroes of Arthur Conan Doyle. Flawed and preposterous as only they can be and brave and quick witted in turn.

Challenger, with or without his companions, is ready for all the adventure he can get his hands on, but are you?

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A great read! Not to be missed!! By Ian Faulkner A great collection from some of the best writers around. The editors did a great job and the stories powerfully invoke an earlier age reminiscent of the true explorer age of Edwardian England. There are thrills and adventure enough to sate the most discerning of appetites! A great read and good value for money. A fine addition to the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lore of Professor Challenger! I recommend this anthology highly!
