A Change of Mind and Other Stories consists of a novella, four short stories and one flash fiction piece. This collection puts the extremes of human behaviour under the microscope with the help of lashings of dark humour, and includes four pieces previously published in Writer’s Muse magazine. In A Change of Mind, Reuben is an office worker so meek and mild he puts up with daily bullying from his boorish male colleagues as if it’s just a normal part of his day. But when a stranger points him in the direction of a surgeon offering a revolutionary new procedure, he can’t pass up the chance to turn his life around. But this isn’t your average surgeon. For a start, he operates alone in a small room above a mechanic’s. And he promises to alter his patients’ personality so they can be anything they want to be… In Marissa, a man who is determined to find evidence of his girlfriend’s infidelity ends up wondering if he should have left well alone. The Dog God finds a chink in the armour of a man with a megalomaniacal desire to take over the world. In The Insomniac, a man who leads an obsessively regimented lifestyle on one hour’s sleep a night finds a disruption to his routine doesn’t work for him. Hole In One sees a dedicated golfer achieving a lifelong ambition. The Loner ends the collection on a note of hope as two family members try to rebuild their lives after they are torn apart by jealousy.

By Michelle Wallace This is a wonderful collection of short fiction.Nick Wilford's writing style is sharp and punchy and you'll find yourself sucked into these pieces. The main piece features Reuben, a timid and socially-challenged, thirty-six year old man with zero self-worth, who finds it impossible to stand up to the bullies in the office. Bullying is one of my pet peeves and my heart went out to Reuben.A neuro-surgical procedure which will help to rewire certain parts of his brain seems to be the answer to his problem. This surgery will be performed by a questionable doctor who operates above a mechanic shop, and he promises Reuben a major personality transformation and a brand new lease on life. My first thought: but at what cost? I'm a firm believer in the saying: if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is!I'll conclude on this cryptic note: be careful what you wish for because you just might get it. And will it be what you thought it would be?Read this book to find out for yourself!

Ullrich The advent of cosmetic surgery allows us to perfect our bodies, changing noses, tummies, or any other unsatisfactory aspect of ourselves with a flick of the scalpel. But what if a simple outpatient procedure could alter your personality? This is the intriguing question Nick Wilford explores in his novella, A Change of Mind.Reuben has endured bullying his entire life, but his timidity makes it impossible to stand up to his abusive co-workers or ask out the pretty girl from PR. When he's offered a chance to “upgrade” his personality with a radical new brain surgery technique, Reuben feels he's got nothing to lose. At first the transformation seems miraculous: Reuben enjoys his newfound charisma and self-confidence. But side effects include amplification of other, less desirable qualities, such as arrogance and violence. The doctor promised the procedure would change Reuben's life...but for better or worse?I couldn't put this story down. Reuben has a strong character voice, and his journey makes us question when and how we should remake ourselves. Witty, keenly observant writing makes for captivating narration. My only criticism is the abrupt ending. I expected a more protracted struggle between Reuben's impulses, a la “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. The sudden conclusion disappointed me, but maybe I just wanted the tale to continue! The other short stories in this collection also left me craving further development of their ideas, but Wilford's sharp writing style makes the snapshots enjoyable. His writing is some of the best I've encountered in indie fiction; I'd love to see that talent, and Wilford's knack for instantly thought-provoking situations, channeled into a full-length novel. For anyone interested in speculative fiction and snappy short stories, reading A Change of Mind is an afternoon well-spent.

I don’t normally read short fiction although I’ve taken an interest in it lately. I enjoyed most the novella which is the title of the collection. When you meet the main character, Reuben he is so downtrodden that your heart immediately goes out to him. He is bullied mercilessly by everyone around him. I think this is a theme that will resonate with almost anyone. Whether you’ve been picked on at school or had to deal with a particularly difficult coworker, you’ll feel Reuben’s pain. His low self-worth is palpable and Wilford does an expert job of showing how this colors his perception of the world around him. You’ll be cheering for Reuben when he is faced with the prospect of changing his lot in life. What follows is both gripping and somewhat bizarre. Wilford does an excellent job of keeping things mostly believable but laced with enough intrigue that you’re not really sure where things are going until the shocking end. Then you’ll find yourself wanting to go back and re-read everything. It will leave you wondering how reliable Reuben was as a narrator, which I absolutely love. The rest of the stories are much shorter but equally as riveting. Wilford’s ability to work an awesome plot-twist into such short pieces of fiction is simply amazing. My favorite of the shorter pieces was definitely Marissa, although I enjoyed all of them and felt disappointed when I reached the end of the collection. Don’t miss this one! It’s fantastic!
