Each story is unique, lots of wit and creativity as well as excellent writing By Kitty Smith I love short stories for the fast escapism they allow me on days when I just don't have the time to spend hours reading. The nine stories in this collection easily captivated my imagination during their short span. The writing is skillful and the editing was perfectly done so there's no grammatical hiccups to knock you out of the story at just the wrong time.My favorite is probably "The Bitter Climb" about an extremely judgmental man who seems to despise everyone, but at last gets what he's always wished for. It's a great example of packing a lot of story into a little bit of space, plus it comes with a very satisfying ending. The macabre "Awkward" runs a close second though, a real creeper with a lot of twists. "The First Ride" cracked me up. This version of Santa Claus's origins is witty and clever, and totally original.It's a wonderful collection, each story unique and well narrated and well worth revisiting in the future.

By Sunnymoon Gary Paul Bryant has a talent of keeping you guessing with his ability to take you from reality to fantasy and back again. His captivating stories vary from tickling your funny bone, a bit of nostalgia with a longing for the past, our curiosity of the future, and more. Recalling Lazarus in Gleason Snickel (and the Search for Love) will always bring me a smile. While The Phone makes me long for that same opportunity of a ring into my past and the present.Looking forward to more from this author. What is next?

And honestly I loved it!‘The Phone: And Other Short Stories’ is an amazing collection of short stories all so diverse, unique, and original.Author Gary Paul Bryant has done a great job. His stories are full of suspense, masterfully written, and readers can’t help but keep reading to discover every gem hidden in this book.There are stories with a humorous touch - “she began an affair with the pool-boy and started a new chlorinated bacteria-free life with him” – like the first one. The main character writes greeting cards for a living, so a few slogans will be waiting for you if you decide to read it. I was amazed by the acerbic finale of story #2 and the claustrophobic sense story #3 has left me with.You never know what to expect before you start reading each of these stories.I have to admit ‘In the woods where the widow sings’ was my favorite. So dark, full of mystery and with a creepy ending. I hope it becomes a novel someday.There are stories for those who have a sweet tooth, stories about sports lovers, science enthusiasts, ghosts, near-death experiences… Gary Paul Bryant has something interesting for everyone. You’ll even discover who Claus was before he became Santa.After reading this book, I think I’m going to give short stories collections a second chance.
