Full color, stylish layouts, tons of photos, quotes and interesting side-bars with fun information about the characters from the TV show. Every recipe is tied to a character’s personality. The appendix contains sample party menus made up of the dishes in this book. There's also a show guide describing every episode of every season through season 6.It’s almost worth it just as a Modern Family scrapbook, but how are the recipes? In the limited amount of time I have to review the book, there are only so many I can test, but so far, we’ve been pleased with the three we have tried. "Phil's First Day of School Pancakes”: above average. Very nice texture. We don’t like any eggy flavor to our pancakes so we may change the recipe to just use an egg yolk instead of the whole egg, and we like to add a little vanilla."Cam and Mitchell's Parmesan Baked Chicken” - excellent, and fairly easy with common ingredients. They didn’t suggest backing some mozzarella on top, but that seemed sacrilegious, so we added a generous helping of mozzarella. I don’t eat a lot of left-overs, but I enjoyed this for three meals. A definite “make again”.“Jay’s Crab Cakes with Jalapeño Lime Aioli” - another excellent recipe. A new favorite. Of course, these will only be as good as the kind of crab you use. The fresh crab was too expensive, and the canned crab is usually nasty, so we used a vacuum packed pouch of half crab/half whitefish, so it was a bit mild, but really good, especially with the jalapeño lime sauce. The recipes are mostly easy, but they do tend to be a bit yuppified for my taste, I doubt we’ll actually make more than 10 or 12, but a couple of good recipes is all it takes.4.5 stars. Would make a great gift for a Modern Family / cooking fan.

A fabulous hardcover that will hold up much longer, and looks better on the bookshelf in my opinion. It also has some of my favorite photos of the Modern Family television series on the cover. It has an easy, well laid out index and table of contents. Along with a cute 'Meet the Chefs' page with statements from the characters. You are then given a quick glimpse of the rooms in the different homes and what style they are. Starting with breakfast is so handy. You can go through your favorites there and easily find your way lunch items and sides. Along the way there are fun pages and quizzes such as 'which parent type are you?', the song lyrics to 'People aren't food' written for Lily, sisterly wisdom, etc. The recipes are also well laid out and easy to follow. A cookbook with personality that includes great meals. Among my favorites are Gloria's empanadas. A delightful dish with Salsa (salsa recipe on same page), and Cam's Asparagus pita rounds, a healthy and easy to make pits you can put together quickly for a lunch or a snack before supper. A great gift for someone like myself who loves food and also loves the characters on Modern Family show.

Hill This sturdy hardback contains is a wry combination of information about the show and recipes assigned to the characters. A clear effort was made to keep all aspects of the project consistently focused, but in no way does that become grating or overly cutesy. And, although the book is useful as a cookbook, if not a fan of or familiar with the show, a large part of the charm will be lost.Measuring about 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 1 inches this is a reasonably slim volume. Show related information include an introduction to the characters and their homes, an episode guide, character details and little snippets of dialog inserted to the side of some of the recipes. Photos are lavishly sprinkled throughout but most are of show related material. The majority of the 100 recipes are not pictured which is more of an issue with main entrees and less recognizable dishes than with things like beverages.I guess the question is whether this is a legitimate cookbook or just an excuse to create more merchandising for fans. My answer is, both. The recipes are a nice mix of styles and levels of complexity. Some are good basics to keep handy, like the Multi-Grain Malt Waffles which were delicious and conveniently instructions are given to create a bulk dry mix for future batches which can be stored in the refrigerator. I also enjoyed Pepper’s Citrus, Fennel, and Rosemary Olives. The Red Quinoa Salad needed a bit more seasoning but it is not unusual that dishes need customization for the people consuming them.Regarding the actual construction of the book, I bent the sides of the book open to loosen the spine and it seemed to lay flat on a counter top without too much of a struggle. For anyone with vision issues, the ink color used is black, the print is bold for the recipe ingredients, but the font size is 9 point which is difficult to read from a distance (laying on a counter top) for even those people with good vision. The paper is good quality. I splashed coffee on one page and when wiped-up promptly there was no damage – a useful attribute in the kitchen. And, cover is bonded to the book, an excellent choice over a loose dust jacket which inevitably becomes torn, soiled and otherwise damaged while in use in the kitchen. The book is much more ambitious than I expected and is clearly created with care, providing actual value both in show information and decent recipes. And, consistent with the tone of the show, there is a hefty dose of fun. Evidence -- the recipe for smashing a glazed donut into a bacon grease basted waffle iron, cooking until toasty and then topping with a heated maple syrup, crisp crumbled bacon and chopped pecan mixture.
