By Amazon Customer Purchased the hard cover edition at a local market and am thrilled. In my line of work, any "special" diet has always felt like an inconvenience and a drab way of creating food. I've always had to "jump online" and find a quick way to solve my problem. After receiving YUM the other day, I realized that I could not be more wrong. I was instantly captivated by not only the family history that inspired YUM, but also the education I was quickly receiving. Before I ever got to the first recipe, I was hooked. This truly reads like a conversation with a friend. If you're anything like me, YUM will not only educate you, but also inspire you to explore the natural and healthy ways of making some amazing food. The outstanding photography throughout the book is just as inspirational. I didn't realize that a gluten-free diet could be so delicious! The added hints, tips, and tidbits just make it more enjoyable to read. I have a very good friend who is diabetic and often disappointed with food choices, especially when it comes to dessert. Imagine my delight when I found the recipe for "Peanut Butter Coconut Melts" and "Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups"!Thanks to the Nicassio family for sharing your journey with us and allowing us to experience YUM! This is a great book!

YUM: plant-based recipes for a gluten-free dietby Theresa Nicassio, D&D Publishing, Vancouver, 2015Theresa Nicassio’s cookbook YUM is full of terrific and easy recipes, all completely plant-based and gluten, sugar and dairy free (a “veganized Djokovic diet”). However, it’s quite likely that you will end up enjoying it as much for its other wonderful qualities: the gorgeous photos (set it out on your coffee table - oops! - I mean tea table), the author’s personable and inviting writing style, and her sense of creative adventure. Indeed, Theresa’s account of her experimentation (including the failures) will inspire you to “be like Theresa” or at least to adopt her as your culinary mentor. This is not your grandmother’s recipe book. YUM is decidedly modern in its choice of new (substitute) ingredients and clever techniques. I found the sections at the ends of the book (“Funky Ingredients”, “Terrific Tools” and “Special Diet and Allergy Chart”) particularly useful and revelatory. Did you know about avocado oil, bean pasta, chicory root inulin powder, Himalayan salt, chick pea miso, massaging kale, spiralizers, soaking and dehydrating,…? I can’t wait to try these things!Lon Rosen

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book has some good recipes. The editorial and layout is rough By One Smart Lady This book has some good recipes. The editorial and layout is rough. But the writer is trying to fill a gap from weightwatcher's lack of pressure cooker recipes.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I love this cook book By Roberts I love this cook book! I started Weight Watchers back in September and am always looking for delicious recipes that are quietly disguised as healthy. This cook book contains just that! Everything in this cook book is appealing to both the inner and not so inner overweight girl (that's me!). The recipes are easy to read, instructions easy to follow and the points plus/nutrition values are assigned on each recipe. Most recipes even contain little extras letting you know how many additional points suggested sides are with each dish.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The concept is good, the execution needs work. By Kenneth H. Pickover I'm going to give this three stars with an option to change it up or down once I make a few of these dishes. Reading through the published book, at least one of the recipes requires special equiptment ( a Tupperware Microwave Pressure Cooker), some have glaring mistakes that should've been picked up by the author or copy editor. For example, the recipe on pg 19 of the book requires as an ingredient smoked pork chop (?) and then in instructions starts talking about ham hocks (nothing about a smoked pork chop). On pg 39 the author asks us to brown steak in 24 teaspoons of peanut oil. I'm still counting. Some recipes don't specify high vs low pressure, and many pressure cookers these days, electronic and otherwise, have both. Lastly there are only 50 recipes in the book, two of which are for broth and stock, No pictures, in a very low tech publication. So, as I say, I haven't made any recipes yet, if they are really good, I will be back to report on that, but the jury is still out. ***Post making several recipes I've upped it a star as they did come out tasting pretty good. I made them all on high pressure (about 11 psi in the Instant Pot) and used my judgement when some of the instructions were less than instructive.

Low level radiation is all around us. Radiation Protective Foods (formerly Diet for the Atomic Age) was one of the first books to examine this crucial health problem and to offer a course of action that any individual can follow. Based on years of research, the author has gathered medical data that clearly shows that certain foods and supplements have protective properties, which can safeguard you from low level radiation. The author presents theories on how these foods stave off the effects of radiation and suggests recipes that maximize their protective powers in our increasingly toxic post-Fukushima world.

Containing interviews with leading scientific experts, Radiation Protective Foods may well become a survival guide while we focus on phasing out the sources of radiation poisoning.

It is a concise, well researched (30 pages of references) guide to protecting your health in a very toxic world, now made even more toxic with the Fukushima nuclear accident, still spewing. It addresses the issue of increased levels of low-level radiation, how it can damage us, how foods can protect our immune system, foods to avoid and supplements that are important to our radio-protective systems. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about their own health and that of their family. It also includes recipes that should be on every cookbook shelf.

Valuable contribution to countering the effects of the continuing, worldwide low-level radiation in the wake of Fukushima By N Renfrew This excellent book is a must for everyone wanting to be healthy in a world where the hazards of radiation are increasing daily. These hazards are especially visible and continuing since Fukushima, and we have the ability to counter them through knowledge about how certain foods can eliminate or lessen the risks. There is a lot of valuable research included in this book, to back up the recommendations.

But then, I was glad to see that there are actually things that I can do to protect myself through the use of everyday foods. I came to understand that radiation can be incorporated into the body, and that everyday foods can act like a shield, as the subtitle says, "HOW TO SHIELD YOURSELF FROM LOW LEVEL RADIATION". I had heard about Chernobyl and Fukushima, BUT I HADN'T COMPREHENDED THE ALL PERVASIVE FALLOUT FROM THESE ACCIDENTS AND THE EVERYDAY OPERATIONS OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS. In Chapter 6, I discovered that there are "radio"-protective foods such as cabbage and broccoli, and that all of this has been documented by official agencies. In fact there are 26 pages of references from published medical and scientific research - a rare find ! There are also lists of supplements that are radio-protective as well. I noticed that there is an AUDIBLE audio version available. You can listen to a 3 minute sample of it on the AMAZON site.

I was excited to see my favorite dishes in this book. I was able to go to the Asian market and pick up the ingredients to make the food I love. I have always wanted to try to make these dishes, but didn't want to waste money on ingredients I didn't really need. The recipes were easy to understand and easy to make. The fact that this is an eBook is awesome because I can just pull up the eBook on my phone and have a list of everything I need right there!I received this free ebook in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Losing weight is a great benefit as well.I found this to be a very easy to follow book that is filled with great recipes on how to develop healthy eating habits. To date our favourite recipe is the “Orange Peel Cornish Hens”. I have to admit to initially been drawn to the quirky name, however, it really is delicious.

This ebook has some great recipes with plenty of variety. She starts the book by talking about what it means to go clean and eat foods that have less chemicals, and are more natural. The book gives some great tips for developing habits for clean eating. The recipes are simple and easy to follow. I recommend this book!

There are only 19 recipes in this book so there are not "19 Days" of Clean Eating. While some of the recipes look good, I thought I would be getting more. Many of the recipes use peppers which my family is not fond of so I will have to alter. Another thing I expect with most slow cooker recipes is that it can be cooked while you are at work. Many of the recipes had shorter cook times so they can't be used except on the weekend. I'll stick with Pinterest and the internet next time.

About the Author Jack London was an American author, journalist, and adventurer. London s early careers as sailor, fisherman, and prospector provided inspiration for his later writing, and it was only when he returned from the Klondike that London decided to focus on social activism and journalism. He soon became a popular magazine columnist and author, and a prolific commercial writer, penning over two dozen novels, and numerous short stories and poems. His most famous works include The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea-Wolf, and the short stories To Build a Fire, and An Oddyssey of the North. London died in 1916.

The stories vary widely in style and subject, and, for the most part, you won't find the wilderness adventure stories for which London was famous (There is one, out of eight). London liked to experiment with diverse subject matter and literary techniques, often with mixed results. In this collection, originally published in 1906, he is successful on all counts. These eight stories are well-crafted, vividly descriptive, and suspenseful. A few of the stories explore the psychology of murder, and show the influence of Edgar Allen Poe, as does the closing novella "Planchette", which deals with the supernatural. "The Minions of Midas" is a tale of terrorism that's years ahead of its time. "The Shadow and the Flash" is pure science fiction, incredibly imaginative for its time and still exciting 100 years later. The only wilderness adventure story in this book, "All Gold Canyon", is one of London's absolute best. It contains some of his most beautiful descriptions of the natural environment, and a detailed nuts-and-bolts description of the process of gold prospecting. If you're familiar with London's work, you'll love this book. If you only know him from his sled dog stories, give this collection a try and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

You can never go wrong with Jack London's books! This one, just as the others I got earlier, is well made and easy to read. I like the active Table of Context that allows me to go straight to a story I want to read. I haven't noticed any mistakes or "bugs" so far. Will keep adding new books to my e-library. Thank you, Amazon, for coming up with the Kindle - what a great way to enjoy multiply books on one small, lightweight device!

Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? (Vintage Contemporaries), by Raymond Carver

Review "Carver is the king of short fiction. His writing hits you in the pit of your stomach, and haunts you with its disenchantment. It's almost visceral." -- Natasha Lunn Red "Carver has made himself the natural successor to his true mentor, Chekhov" Financial Times "He is alert to the unique, inconspicuous incident, when a life or a marriage may change course decisively" Sunday Telegraph "Carver's stories celebrate some lasting aspects of the human condition, however minimal, conjuring up a quality of fellow feeling which gives the stories a compelling, dry-eyed poignancy, a melancholy but intensely moving authenticity" -- William Boyd Daily Telegraph "There is nobody else like him. In some ways his pared-down style is an extreme development of the Hemingway style, but Carver writes about women and the ways men relate to them far more convincingly than Hemingway ever did" Frank Kermode

From the Inside Flap With this, his first collection of stories, Raymond Carver breathed new life into the American short story. Carver shows us the humor and tragedy that dwell in the hearts of ordinary people; his stories are the classics of our time.

He died August 2, 1988, shortly after completing the poems of A New Path to the Waterfall.

33 of 33 people found the following review helpful. assortment of harsh, condensed, short stories By Tsila Sofer Elguez There is something very satisfying about short stories, especially if you are short of time; here you still manage to feel some sort of "accomplishment" at having read a "piece of life" embodied in a story. Raymond Carver's short stories are a special treat in this regard. I first came by Raymond Carver's name while watching the movie "Short cuts". This is why I was so intrigued to read this book, his first collection of short stories."Will you please be quiet, please?" is an assortment of harsh, condensed, short stories. The stories are brief and "to the point". Carver captures the human experience at a certain important moment in time. This moment can seem trivial to an outside observer, but this is a flash of revelation, a private understanding that comes after a seemingly regular event. This is a moment of small change, recognition --- something will not remain as it was before. The story "Fat" can be a good example for Carver's style. "Fat" opens the book and is one of my favorite stories in this collection. This is an account of a rather trivial, every day encounter of a waitress with a fat client. However, this encounter manages to shake something inside her and force her to feel something of his "Fat experience". Somehow this makes her think about relationships and people and brings her to a certain realization as to her personal interactions.Carver does not glorify human beings. His description is not tender and he does not write with mercy. This is true regarding instants of ugliness and on the other hand - quick moments of great love and compassion - just as during one day you can have mixed feelings and a great moment of love can come from nowhere and just pass by, sometimes even unnoticed. Somehow Carver manages to grasp the stream of thoughts, feelings and events that led to the after come feeling.Carver's descriptions give us glimpses of life - ordinary, as it happens in real. No drama around it. Carver talks about father son relationship, husband and wife or two lovers. Most of his stories deal with difficult moments, and center around simple, ordinary people, struggling to make a life to themselves - Like Al, the main character in "Jerry and Molly and Sam". Al feels his life is falling apart. His work is not secure any more, he has an affair and is a little terrified by it, he just rented a new apartment... and on top of it there's this new dog his sister in law brought the kids. As an attempt to put some order in his personal chaos Al decides he has to get rid of the dog - an act that puts him into an emotional turmoil of facing his inner self. These stories are "short cuts" of life, which can be ugly and beautiful but is never dull.

I was hooked on his writings since the first time I read his book, which is this one. When I first finished reading this book some years ago, it changed my view in English literature altogether. What struck me was the stark honesty and reality in his writings. Never had I come across a writer who was as honest as Carver. He tells his stories the way life really is, without trying to twist, sensationalise or glamourise it. He tells stories about people like us. In fact, his stories are about us and the people around us.Don't be fooled by the length of his short stories, his shortest pieces like 'Neighbors' and 'Fat' are among his best (though I can't really point out any that is not his best anyway) because it tells so much in so little words.Another startling thing about Carver's stories is that it can relate to people everywhere in the world though he writes about Americans.

23 of 27 people found the following review helpful. One of the books I love By J. Keller I first bought and read this collection while an undergradat the University of Oklahoma. Mr. Carver wasn't then such arecognized master of the short story. Most striking was how pain-ful the stories were to read, and this was without the life experience one has gained since the late 1970's.Raymomd Carver already wrote the stories I was aspiring to; therewas nothing left but to obtain his wonderful story collections, and re-read them every five years or so. The stories become more harrowing the older one gets. I just can't be objective about this collection in particular, as it's been such a touchstone for me.

THE way led along upon what had once been the embankment of a railroad. But no train had run upon it for many years. The forest on either side swelled up the slopes of the embankment and crested across it in a green wave of trees and bushes. The trail was as narrow as a man's body, and was no more than a wild-animal runway. Occasionally, a piece of rusty iron, showing through the forest-mould, advertised that the rail and the ties still remained. In one place, a ten-inch tree, bursting through at a connection, had lifted the end of a rail clearly into view.

The Way We Were By Greg Hughes Sixty years after a plague killed billions of people, an old man tries to convey to his three grandchildren what the world was once like so long ago.The cultured, civilized world of mass communication and technology abruptly gave way to a primitive, savage world of cruelty and barbarism. The survivors and their descendents now live like their stone-age forebears: wearing animal skins, hunting with bows and arrows and believing in superstition. In describing the plague's onslaught, the old man tells his grandchildren of the chaos and degradation that wiped out civilization. Money became worthless, the streets of burning cities were littered with corpses, animals grew wild as mankind lost his supremacy over nature. The three boys have a lot of trouble understanding the words "Granser" uses, due to their lack of education. (Even the word "education" is something the boys have never heard of.) Nevertheless, the old man does the best he can, in spite of the children's limited vocabulary. It's interesting to compare "The Scarlet Plague", which was written in 1912, to the more widely-known "Earth Abides". Both books are set in the same place. They both contain that sense of nostalgia, where old men, left over from the "lost world" yearn for a past that was more attractive. This could well be the blueprint for life-after-the-apocalypse stories. If this story hadn't been written, their would probably never have been such books as "Earth Abides", "The Day of the Triffids", "Empty World" or "The Stand."

20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. a child's great first science fiction story. By A Customer I found this book among my ninth birthay presents and loved it from the first page. what got to me was the description of a way in which everything we know could be destroyed in a few weeks. Also my boyish imagination and dark side were thrilled about the possibility of being left alone in a city, free to do anything i wanted. As the book advanced in explaining the effects of solitude and the need for information about what had happened I found myself questioning my readiness to face such a situation. I highly recommend this book as a way to introduce science fiction to new readers. You must be aware of several objectionable premises set by the author in terms of a racist future society but also a few "wish it were like that" plots which place as the highest paid occupations those like the ones performed by a junior poetry proffesor. My short review has to end by saying that this book has been a dear memory of mine for the past 29 years and writing about it and recommending it to others it's a way to say thank you to Mr. Jack London a great writer and a reason why today I rather read than almost anything else in my spare time. Thank you, and please forgive my primitive english. Milton Roussel, mroussel@david.intertel.hn

33 of 38 people found the following review helpful. Ancestor of "Earth Abides" Somehow Even Bleaker Than "On the Beach" By Christian E. Senftleben The content of the book may seem to be a re-tread, but it is in fact one of the very first post-apocalyptic plague stories. It set the mold for later versions, such as George R. Stewart's "Earth Abides," Pat Frank's "Alas, Babylon," Nevil Shute's "On the Beach," and of course, Stephen King's "The Stand," amongst others.First off in this book, the world as we know it is already gone. Out of billions, there are now only a few *hundred* people left on the planet - all scattered, all isolated ...all neo-lithic. There were not enough people left with the know-how to restart society and at the story's opening, there is only one man alive that even remembers the old world.Furthermore, this book is not the product of an "All are created equal" mentality. No, this is a book that reflects the thinking of a society that sharply divided between nobles and peasants: the former were as unto the gods, while the latter were barely rabble, just mangy curs that needed stay in their cages ...or, be mercifully put out of their misery altogether. It is to the utter horror of the narrator that the debased, pig-like lowborn eventually take rule over the corpse of high society and make it as fetid as themselves. Most of the book reflects the narrator's callous, maliciously aristocratic view of the world, both past and present. Every low-born in this book is detestable; every high-born is beautiful, desirable and ultimately, profaned and desecrated. The book's characterizations are the stark, black-and-white depictions of a deeply autocratic mindset. The narrator is disturbingly aghast at the thought of "the servants taking over" the world with their "grubby little hands." Every depiction of a non-noble seems to include words like "savage," "stupid," and "animal" in them. For a wearied, forlorn teller of ended glory, there is a frightening amount of venom streaking through his glorious recall of things past. The narrator's narrow-minded adoration of the high-born (and their lofty pursuits) contrasts with his horror and overwhelming disgust over "the great unwashed." Disturbing is not quite the word for the narrator's view of things. While far from PC myself, some years ago I took Stewart to task for his dehumanizing descriptions of the mentally challenged; London's book here makes Stewart seem a gleaming saint by contrast. I realize both are products of their times; I do not so much decry that such thoughts were common - only that they were unnecessary, even in a world such as that.Secondly, I've noticed this book's tone is quite a bit different than Stewart's "Earth Abides," (its closest, to me, subsequent corollary). London's book takes an extremely dim view of human beings in general, an attitude that gives even a dedicated cynic like me some pause. This book is nothing like the noble, stoic (and *egalitarian*) characterizations of Shute's "On the Beach" or Frank's "Alas, Babylon." There is no final embrace of family in the defiance of looming death; no, here the children are cast into the gutters upon first sign of infection. Women are not prized and valued as mothers of a new Eden here (a limited view, but quite representative of its time); no, here they are subjugated, degraded, and beaten with vigorous, even joyful savagery... they are purely victims of brutish man-beasts.Nobody dies peacefully here - there is no dignity or nobility or self-sacrifice at any point throughout; no, all persons here are frenzied, heartless carnivores sprinting about in a cyclone of cruelty and depredation... or, their helpless victims. This is a far more frightful end to civilization than even Stephen King's (much) later interpretation. There's not one shred of beauty or kindness in it from start to finish. It's pure survivalism, dog-eat-dog, and the worst of the worst here live to spread their malignant existence to the rest of the world.I mean, even in Shute's "On the Beach," where by the book's end every single person on earth is *dead*, even with Shute there was some beauty, some love, something hopeful ...even at the end. With this book, however, although humanity ultimately survives, it feels far darker, bleaker, and much more hopeless than even Shute's depiction of total nuclear armageddon. As for the book itself, I was glad to finally read it after all these years of hearing about it. It's been out of print for almost a hundred years from what I can tell, and all I could ever find was its far briefer form as a magazine article.Again, it is representative of its era and its culture and for this, I am quite glad to add it to my collection. While it may sound strange to say this, it is perhaps the bleakest post-apocalyptic tale I've ever read, and I've read dozens. As for approach to the content itself, Stewart's "Earth Abides" decidedly ignores the fall of civilization itself, focusing instead upon its slow decay amidst a resurgent nature; in contrast, London focuses upon the days of society's fall, glances briefly upon the intervening years, and leaves an acrimonious bounty of reproach upon the depleted present.Shute's "On the Beach" was compellingly lovely in its dark depiction of humanity's last, silent gasp amidst the void. Frank's "Alas, Babylon" was the defiant cry of life in the midst of great death. Stewart's "Earth Abides" was a beautiful dirge, eloquently mourning the passing of a once-glorious world amidst an ever-decaying and greatly-diminished present....but, "The Scarlet Plague" reads like a spit of contemptuous bile onto the ashen ground of civilization's humbled remains. For me personally, it's a mixed read; it's likely that my years of anticipation for this book (and frequent study of its numerous descendants) have colored the experience for me, so I don't know how objective I can really be here. I suspect I will have to re-read this a few times before I can find its "voice." I suppose I'm just surprised to read a post-apocalyptic tale with such bile; maybe that's an odd thing to say, but it's how I feel about this book.
