Combining meticulously-researched fact with refreshing opinion and wit, The Oxford Companion to Winepresents almost 4,000 entries on every wine-related topic imaginable, from regions and grape varieties to the owners, connoisseurs, growers, and tasters in wine through the ages; from viticulture and oenology to the history of wine, from its origins to the present day. Now exhaustively updated, this fourth edition incorporates the very latest international research to present 300 new entries on topics ranging from additives and wine apps to WSET and Zelen. Over 60 per cent of all entries have been revised; and useful lists and statistics are appended, including a unique list of the world's controlled appellations and their permitted grape varieties, as well as vineyard area, wine productionand consumption by country. I enjoy reading the extensive information contained in this book By LRS I enjoy reading the extensive information contained in this book, but I cannot recommend the Kindle version. With this electronic version, readers will require patience...and waste unnecessary time trying to find the subject they are looking for.Obviously, a book that functions as an encyclopedia with more than 900 pages is not a book that one reads straight through from start to finish. Rather, one skips around from subject to subject according to one's needs. A volume of this magnitude needs to be formatted/laid out carefully, in a way that is both visually pleasing and practical/easy to use.To be clear: information can be found according to a number of categories, including: alphabetical list, regions, topics, etc. However, the problem is that all lists are presented in one long single column, instead of over several columns on a given page (as would be the case in a print verion of a phone book or normal encyclopedia). Given the extensive information contained in this book, this single column presentation requires the reader to turn entirely too many electronic pages in browsing and searching for information. For those who know exactly which term they are looking for, there is a search feature...however, as is always the case with electronic books, the search will present the long list of every time that word or phrase is listed in the entire book (which you then have to scroll through) rather than take you directly to that particular entry heading. Furthermore, given the 900+ pages in length, the search feature takes quite a while before it is completed.I cannot comment on the layout of the print version of the book as I have not seen it. I selected this particular book for the information contained therein, and I chose the electronic version due to the fact that I travel often and may be moving soon. However, if I did not move or travel often, I think the print version would be preferable.I do not understand why the layout of electronic books is lagging so far behind the layout of electronic magazines which are becoming quite sophisticated (see the electronic publication of Intelligent Life by the Economist group, for example). Readers of electronic versions can reluctantly accept ho-hum versions of straightforward content with no images like novels, but many electronic versions of other types of books need to wake up to the needs and expectations of the 21st century.Judging on the information alone, I have thus far been pleased with this book. However, to my mind, the price paid for the electronic version should guarantee a higher level of user friendliness.

Warner When it comes to information and graphics on wine this book is incomparable. However, this is the 21st century when visual presentations must also include photo illustrations and a connecting website. Unfortunately, this doesn't exist for this volume. The only photos included are merely chapter dividers. My guess is that OUP decided to keep production costs down by not having a significant number of photo illustrations. There is a website: http://www.oxfordcompaniontowine.com/. But the only purpose of the site is to sell the book. It's time for OUP to realize that it's 2015 and not.1990. All in all an outstanding book that could have been even better. I would have awarded 4 1/2 stars if I could.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Benchmark for Wine Reference Books By I. King For those who are seeking their wine credentials, this is an indispensable textbook. While this may be too much for the newbie, when you're done with it, you WILL KNOW WINE. More than many professionals, I'd say! This is a reference book/encyclopedia. This is not a book you can sit down and "read." At least, not if you're looking for plot or story. This is a meticulously researched and written tome on all things wine and it is meant to educate, not entertain. Unless, of course, you're a wine geek like me.Update 2/16 - It would have been wonderful to have an online version with clickable links. As I've been expanding my knowledge in different subjects, I realize that this is where this book is wanting. With textbooks now online, this would be a fabulous way to get even more value from this excellent book.
