Snyder's books and I have always been able to make a connection with her characters. However, this book turned me into an emotional mess! Out of all her books, this is the one that I can relate to the most. Their struggles were real and once you read the book, I am sure you will completely understand what I mean. I felt like I was ready a story written about my life, which is why I felt so connected to the characters in this story. Tristan and Chelbys story had me at the edge of my seat the whole time! I would HIGHLY recommend this book for everyone to read. T.h. Snyder, you once again turned me into a HOT mess reading a book of yours! Thank you for your hard work and allowing me to enjoy yet another one of your amazing books!

Finding Us might just be her best book yet. I felt an immediate connection with Tristan and Chelby. My heart broke for these two. I wanted to just jump in the book and let them know everything would be ok. I was an emotional mess ( Big fat tears included) while reading Chelby's struggles. I relate to her struggles and I am sure a lot of others can also. It's one heck of a ride with these two. I love that Chelby is so imperfect. It is one of the things that makes her so real. What can I say about Tristan besides I want one! He is definite book boyfriend material and you will fall in love with him. I know I did! t.h. snyder has an amazing ability with her writing to make you feel like you are inside the characters heads and going through everything they are feeling right alone with them. I can't even put into the words the emotions I felt while reading this book. I would highly recommend this book to everyone!

Powerful, radiant stories by an accomplished author By Laura Stanfill The twelve stories in Baby’s on Fire are radiant, infused with her signature blend of clarity, humor, and intimacy. Her characters spark and crack against each other, many of them rattled by unexpected change, wanting to find their way back to the things they used to have, and often the wanting proves transformative.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Short Story Collection with Real Depth By Wendy J. Fox Though this is Prato's debut collection, it is clear she has been long practicing her craft. In these 12 stories, homes are lost, relationships bust up, people fight, get sick, love and run off, yet through all of the turmoil, Prato's prose is steady and clear. In the title story, the main character's brother Spencer's side of the hotel room they are sharing after their family home is burned to the ground "is immaculate with his new poverty." On the road to Guatemala from Belize, the men are wearing "faded jeans and white t-shirts. They mush have known that white cotton against their brown skin made them look like gods."At 126 pages it's a short book of sometimes very short stories, but "Baby's on Fire" still manages to hold as much as a weighty novel.

I ended up in tears. More than once I caught myself admiring the writing - it's vivid and truly everything I read for, well developed characters grappling with themes of loneliness, family, and relationships. I am looking forward to this author's next book.

Review 'A superbly told, moving and challenging story. For anybody remotely interested in the environment, Scottish culture, American history, the art of biography or the art of life, this book is essential' - Scotland on Sunday

From the Back Cover The Story of My boyhood and Youth is a series of essays on the three worlds of the young John Muir: his first eleven years in an old town in Scotland, the years 1849-1860 in the central Wisconsin wilderness, during the time the area was being settled, and four years at the University of Wisconsin.

About the Author John Muir (1838-1914) was one of the most influential conservationists and nature writers in American history. Founder of the Sierra Club, and its president until his death, Muir was a spirit so free that all he did to prepare for an expedition was to "throw some tea and bread into an old sack and jump the back fence."

An interesting, if dry, memoir By buzzsaw@tdstelme.net John Muir, one of the great leaders of the ecological movement in America, tells of growing up on a farm in Wisconsin. He gives detailed information about the wildlife he sees growing up, which is interesting but does get a bit tedious. It was interesting to learn how Muir became interested in being an inventor; before reading this book I hadn't known of his inventions. It gives some insights into how he came to love and appreciate nature, and hints at his later desire to protect all things wild. Near the end of the book he writes, "I wandered away on a glorious botanical and geological excursion, which has lasted nearly fifty years and is not yet completed, always happy and free, poor and rich, without thought of a diploma or of making a name, urged on and on through endless, inspiring, Godful beauty." Certainly Muir's writing recalls Thoreau, and his spirit has lived on through the writings of such diverse people as Rachel Carson, Jack Kerouac, and Adolph Murie. This book is not one of his classics, but if you're interested in Muir or life on the plains before they became completely tamed, it's worth reading.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Dig Harder By A Customer The central symbol of Muir's abusive father is the father's decision to become a lay preacher, and thus his determination to study the Bible all day, while dumping all the farm chores on young John. This puts John at the bottom of a new well, hacking through the rocky ground in search of water. While the holy father urges him on between inspirational readings. One wonders if the father was reading of Jesus's encounter with the woman at the well, offering himself as the living water.John concluded it's time to get the heck out of Wisconsin and away from his dad, to roam around the mountains and forests of the great unexplored Western U.S., appreciating the water where God placed it in plain view.Muir's experience of being forced to work like a Calvinist, while his dad sat around like a pietist, presents a juxtaposition which can be applied to other relationships we all come across in our lives. That, and the lesson that you need not be a perpetual victim of a rotten childhood. Muir certainly overcame it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Awesome John Muir By Alan Langstraat John Muir was a genius of natural understanding, and this book doesn't really explain why. His life is beyond explanation. But he sure can tell a tale! It's a fascinating look at new immigrants to the U.S. in the 1800's. John Muir is such a man apart that every page is mindblowing. He has thoughts and experiences that will appeal to nearly every reader. His schooling was remarkable, his work ethic unrelenting, his desire to learn insatiable, his boldness irrefutable. He relates his thought processes in a way that opens the window to his soul, and you learn to know a man who you really want to know. His instincts, thoughts, motives, and wonderings guide the reader's mind to productive and beneficial thoughts.I loved this book!

Trees have been essential to the success of human beings, providing food, shelter, warmth, transportation, and products (consider the paper you are holding). Trees are also necessary for a healthy atmosphere, literally connecting the earth with the sky. Once in wild abundance— the entire eastern North America was a gigantic forest—they have receded as we have clearcut the landscape in favor of building cities and farms, using up and abusing our forests in the process. Over the centuries, we have trained food trees, such as peach and apple trees, to produce more and better fruit at the expense of their lives. As Jeff Gillman, a specialist in the production and care of trees, explains in his acclaimed work, How Trees Die: The Past, Present, and Future of Our Forests, the death of a tree is as important to understanding our environment as how it lives. While not as readily apparent as other forms of domestication, our ancient and intimate relationship with trees has caused their lives to be inseparably entwined with ours. The environment we have created—what we put into the air and into the water, and how we change the land through farming, construction, irrigation, and highways—affects the world’s entire population of trees, while the lives of the trees under our direct care in farms, orchards, or along a city boulevard depend almost entirely on our actions. Taking the reader on a fascinating journey through time and place, the author explains how we kill trees, often for profit, but also unintentionally with kindness through overwatering or overmulching, and sometimes simply by our movements around the globe, carrying foreign insects or disease. No matter how a tree’s life ends, though, understanding the reason is essential to understanding the future of our environment.

How Trees Die: The Past, Present, and Future of our Forests, by Jeff Gillman

From Publishers Weekly Horticultural scientist Gillman (The Truth About Organic Gardening) examines the astounding longevity of trees. Beginning with a provocative opener comparing the fate of cows raised for meat to the life-span of trees cut down to make paper for books, Gillman delineates the incursions made by expanding development, commercial tree farms, air pollution and pests (encouraging sophisticated methods for controlling pests, like "a careful analysis of their sex life," to impede reproduction). Analyzing the life cycle of trees-their greatest vulnerability as juveniles, their hardy reproductive phase, the deceleration of growth as the distance from root to treetop increases-Gillman also highlights some amazing specimens, including the oldest tree alive today, a 9,500 year-old Norwegian oak. Gillman takes an interesting survey of trees grown from seeds and those grown commercially from shoots, grafts, cuttings, etc.; he also looks at "meristems," which play the same role in plants as stem cells do in animals (plants that are cloned, like the sheep Dolly, appear to die from premature aging). Written for the lay reader, this interesting scientific tour should capture the imagination of casual naturalists. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. About the Author JEFF GILLMAN is associate professor of horticultural science at the University of Minnesota. He is author of The Truth About Organic Gardening.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A Great Read By Meleah Maynard It kind of bugs Jeff Gillman when people tell him that his book How Trees Die: The Past, Present, and Future of our Forests is sad. As a horticultural scientist at the University of Minnesota, he has researched trees extensively, so observing their suffering and death is part of his job, something to be studied and understood. For the rest of us, though, trees seem venerable, almost magical, and no matter how scraggly and half-dead they get, it still pains us to watch them die or have to cut them down.So it did make me sad to read his account of all the ways in which humans intentionally (through clearcutting, for example) and unwittingly (by over watering or planting too deeply, for instance) kill trees. But that didn't stop me from reading the entire book on the flight to and from my mom's house in Phoenix a couple of months back. What captivated me was Gillman's storytelling. While his previous books, including The Truth About Organic Gardening, have offered up well-researched information in a humorous and completely accessible way, this one reads at times like a short story only the characters we come to care about so deeply are trees. Add to this the fact that the book is filled with fascinating facts like plants that are cloned seem to age prematurely and die (like Dolly the sheep) and that there weren't any earthworms in the Northeastern United States until the 1800s when they hitched a ride here in the ballasts of European ships, and you've got a genuine must-read with this one.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Triumph of Tree Knowledge! By J. Mattson S ometimes it can be hard to imagine the things you don't know, or things you may find in a book a little outside your area of expertise. Take for instance the small fact the world didn't have a summer in 1816?! Or how about if someone asked you who the Einstein of Horticulture was, would you have any idea or would you think they were only kidding? His name is Thomas Knight and he proved that trees have a bit of a sixth sense, because even if you turn a tree upside down it will still grow up to the sky. So while the title of this book is How Trees Die, I wouldn't want that to deter the reader into thinking this is a gloomy book with midnight militia. Quite the contrary, there is an orchestrated score of history, science and biology in here, more than enough for you to be well on your way smiling and enlightened and ready to wow your friends with some beautiful facts that unearth many hidden dendrological secrets. After I finished reading this book I was in such a mysterious awed tree rapture, I walked around the city for blocks and blocks, looking at trees, noting the branches, noting which way the trunks were growing, how healthy the leaves looked. I am thankful and blessed to have had the opportunity to read and ponder such a book on trees!-onebookwiser.comAncient forest trees, the saw is loud to your bark,so birds sing your cry.

I enjoyed the first two quite a bit and looked forward to this one, but didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. It seemed too serious, I would have enjoyed at least one character with a sense of humor.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Pretty good By Samantha Loving I think the book moves to fast and there's not enough action. They have more trouble with humans more than anything else. I can't connect with the characters that well they are kinda stupid but still good if you want a quick read.

The grass isn't always greener on the other side By Neena Christianson Martin In this volume, Jen, Mark and some of the others leave Tent City, looking for the greener grass on the outside. Unfortunately as is quite often the case that greener grass was all a myth. Now faced with having to admit defeat, they must find a way back home. Still no definitive ending, so I am sure there will be at least a volume four.

However the Kindle formatting is a bit screwed up. For starters the beginning of many of the ingredients lists are over-written numbers from old edited automatic formatting of numbering or bullets. The imbedded links do not work either so that the links to his recommended brands for recipes and supplementary recipes for simple seasoning mixes (like Old Bay or taco mix) are just missing. Also: Strictly speaking, this is not a Dump Recipe cookbook, which I believe implies opening cans, and packets, dumping them in a single pan and cooking. But it IS a collection of faster-to-make recipes that are made from more wholesome ingredients.Despite the above, I still give this gem 4 stars. There are lots of recipes! And by and large they are healthy, dairy-free (a must for me) and low carb. I have been seeking ways to include more variety and taste into my limited cooking time due to being handicapped, so this wonderful collection really fills the bill. It is easily adaptable for folks with food allergies and some recipes even suggest substitutions for those sensitive to nightshades or other allergens. There are many good crockpot recipes and most are Paleo-friendly. I can quickly put something on at Noon and have it ready by 6 pm when I'm too tired to cook. Also he gives suggestions for making enough for multiple meals, then freezing in packets of deliciously seasoned meat for tacos or fajitas. There are some interesting Garam Marsala recipes, mango and meat recipes, garlic chicken, plenty of whole chicken variations, even a dairy-free shrimp chowder. The list goes on and on, all sounding delicious and interesting.I borrowed this book on Kindle Unlimited, but went ahead and bought it to always have on hand. Thanks for this treasury of fast tasty recipes! I hope you can solve the Kindle formatting problems and I will revise my review to 5 stars!

By blake Because of some pesky formatting bugs I know I should give this book four stars instead of five but I feel a little uncomfortable doing that because the cookbook is absolutely wonderful and what if the formatting wasn’t the authors fault? Benefit of the doubt and all that. My son is autistic and is on a gluten free low sugar, low dairy diet. He used to be on a dairy free diet but last fall the therapist added back dairy in small amounts and eggs. This has broadened my options a lot so i have been determined to experiment a little more, which is how I found this book. For me the best part is the author does not forget that people with restrictive diets still need and want flavor! My son and I are going to be in the kitchen experimenting over Easter break thanks to the delicious and easy to make recipes in this book.
