By Heather Wood I truly enjoyed all four short stories included in this anthology, and they flowed well within the narrative of the overhead story. It's a quick read, a real page-turner, and reminds me vaguely of The Twilight Zone. Definitely worth a read!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Four Stars By Bill Greenleaf Short and sweet... or a bit, chilly. I liked the way the stories interacted with each other.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A fun read with a hint of creepiness By DiPuggo, I. I enjoyed the way the author was able to weave in new characters and a plot to explain how the four individual short stories fit together.

Kelis' love affair with food started as a child. A native New Yorker, her mother worked as a chef in her own catering business, run out of their home in Harlem. Driven by the speed and the intensity in the kitchen, Kelis' passion behind watching her mother cook inspired her to roll up her sleeves, willing to do whatever anyone asked of her. Every detail was clear and defined: Red lips, red nails, perfume, earrings and a military demeanor; Kelis felt in the presence of a master while watching her mother work.At age 17, Kelis signed her first recording contract and began to travel the world. She discovered local outdoor markets and tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurants and considered them the hidden treasures of her journeys. After 10 years in the music business, Kelis decided to attend Le Cordon Bleu. Attending the famous cooking school gave Kelis the confidence to call herself a chef and to write her first cookbook.“My Life on a Plate” tells Kelis' personal story through the food she creates. Her style has been molded by her culture, her travels, and all the people she met along the way. This book is a collection of her favorite recipes. It features a mix of foods from her Puerto Rican heritage, such as Pernil (Puerto Rican Pork Shoulder), Arroz con Gandules, and Shrimp Alcapurias along with dishes she created after discovering them on her travels around the world such as Malay Curry Chicken and Swedish Meatballs.

My Life on a Plate: Recipes From Around the World, by Kelis

Review People tend to view celebrities' cookbooks with suspicion, wondering if their heroes of stage, screen or Spotify can actually cook. Good news: There's no reason to approach R&B singer Kelis Rogers's new recipe collection, “My Life on a Plate,” with anything but respect. Ms. Rogers (who goes simply by the name of Kelis) possesses an acumen in the kitchen to match her confidence at the microphone. (Charlotte Druckman The Wall Street Journal)This book is not a celebrity cash-in. See, singer-songwriter Kelis, who's made a steady career on the vanguard of R&B and soul music for nearly 20 years, just wrote a new cookbook called "My Life on a Plate"… It's a book of serious recipes, ambitious in its geographic breadth and an insightful look at how food and music intersect. (Kevin Pang Chicago Tribune)With paragraphs of personal stories accompanying each recipe, My Life On a Plate often resembles a memoir through which readers can piece together the singer-turned-chef's biography…There are no milkshake recipes, but her goat cheese ice cream will bring anyone to the yard. (Nolan Feeney Time Magazine)Kelis' first cookbook, “My Life on a Plate: Recipes From Around the World”… captures Kelis' essence: colorful, straightforward and brimming with personal stories. Her page of kitchen essentials, both equipment and food, is simple and manageable. It takes the intimidation out of the cooking process for any novice, and returns the experienced culinarian back to basics. (Lily Moayeri LA Weekly)Kelis has carved out an image for herself beyond the "Milkshake" music video. Her debut cookbook, “My Life On A Plate: Recipes from Around the World”, includes recipes inspired by her travels and culinary training, including a detailed recipe for Jerk Ribs with Brown Sugar Rub. (Melissa Kravitz am New York)Kelis' cookbook has recipes that reflect her diverse background and travels, from Puerto Rican to Jamaican cuisine. Of course, there are familiar dishes like Corn Chowder and Apple Pie. But there are also unusual, seemingly daunting meals like Shrimp Alcapurrias and Chorizo Date Stuffing. (Clover Hope Jezebel)She may be known for her trademark milkshake, but Kelis has quite a few other desserts up her proverbial sleeve. For those who don't know, the Harlem-born singer-songwriter behind the infectious 2003 ditty also moonlights as a certified chef (she even holds a degree from the esteemed Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in N.Y.C.). Now, she's bringing her tried-and-true recipes beyond the confines of the test kitchen with her first-ever cookbook, My Life on a Plate. (Claire Stern InStyle)Kelis finds the joy in food. (Charreah K. Jackson Essence.com)In addition to her musical ear, the performer boasts bona fide chef credentials. Meaning, she can rock a mise en place as well as the microphone. (Joanna Prisco Yahoo.com)Yum! Bossy singer Kelis has been taking the cooking world by storm ― with her own brand of sauces, a cooking show, and now her very own cookbook My Life on a Plate. (Perez Hilton PerezHilton.com)Kelis Rogers is making more than a “Milkshake”… Sharing her world dish by dish in "My Life On A Plate", she takes readers along on a unique cooking journey from her mother's kitchen and Puerto Rican specialties to recipes she's picked up throughout the world. (Kristine M. Kierzek Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel)Is the voice behind songs like "Got Your Money," "Jerk Ribs"and "Milkshake" really qualified to give a thumbs up or down to fine cooking? Turns out she's plenty qualified – Kelis is a Le Cordon Bleu trained chef, and she's picked up plenty of first-hand knowledge about worldly cuisines as she's traveled the globe in support of her music. …Her first cookbook, which features some of her favorite recipes – some based on her mom's recipes, others from her own experiences in the kitchen – tells a sort of personal story of how a music and fashion icon evolved into a serious chef. Nothing off-key here. (Grant Butler The Oregonian)Gold-selling artist Kelis, known best for her playful-provocative singing and songwriting and 15 years of chart-topping hits, including the ever-popular “Milkshake”…has something just as yummy up her sleeves: food recipes! (C. Zawadi Morris Brooklyn Reader)Kelis has written a cookbook and no, it doesn't have any milkshake recipes. The R&B singer who shot to fame extolling the delights of the frothy drink is offering more nutritious fare in her book My Life on a Plate: Recipes from around the World. It contains dishes she collected on her travels as an international superstar, mixed with the kaleidoscope of flavors she was raised with in diverse Harlem, New York. (Milena Veselinovic CNN)In My Life on a Plate, Kelis brings her own twist to multiple recipes she's collected as a musician and later as a trained chef. Many of the dishes she includes have a Puerto Rican or Latin flavor to them, like Sofrito, Platano Soup or Smoked Bacon Arepas. Others emphasize flavors--curry, cumin, cardamom and ginger--one might find in Bali or Kuala Lumpur, or use coconut milk, such as Coconut Curry Crab Soup. Kelis brings comfort food (mac and cheese, meatloaf) and dishes with tropical ingredients (yucca, guava purée) together in one worldwide tour of flavorful cuisine. (Lee E. Cart Shelf Awareness)My Life on a Plate by musician Kelis is a versatile cookbook that will have remarkable staying power on your shelf. The recipes criss-cross the world, bringing Southern, Asian, Mexican, and Middle Eastern cuisines together into a collection that is absolutely delicious. Her creativity and the vibrant photography serve as extra inspiration. (Tabitha Blankenbiller Bustle)The recipes Kelis serves up in My Life on a Plate: Recipes from Around the World are exactly like the title states―an eclectic mixture of the cuisines she's eaten and picked up on during her time spent touring the world as a musician, as well as dishes inspired by her Puerto Rican and Jamaican heritage. There are some recognizable dishes like donuts and beef sliders and also some more adventurous fare, like oxtail poutine and smoked bacon arepas, all broken down in a way that's still feasible for even the most hesitant of would-be foodies. (Faith Cummings StyleCaster)

About the Author Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Kelis Rogers, better known by just her first name, first came to prominence singing the hook of Ol' Dirty Bastard's hit Got Your Money. Years of chart dominating songs and thrilling, boundary-pushing music followed resulting in millions of albums sold and numerous top 10 hits. She has released six albums, won Brit, Q, and NME Awards, and been nominated for two Grammy Awards. Her latest album Food, made with a live band and horn section, mints a sound that is rootsy, raw, and soulful without ever being retro. Upon release the album was praised as one of her most adventurous works yet. Kelis has toured every corner of the world, performed at every major festival, and shared the stage with the world's top artists. A fashion icon and designer muse since the early days of her career, she is celebrated for a personal style which is often as creative and forward-thinking as the music she makes. Besides her career in music, Kelis is a Le Cordon Bleu trained chef with multiple television cooking specials, and a burgeoning entrepreneurial streak with her Bounty & Full organic sauce line.

You can tell by the photos that the food will be delicious. I've yet to try a recipe directly from the book, but I will say that Chef Kelis's jerk sauce recipe is AMAZING! I'd recommend the book a personal purchase and as a gift.

Bennett Beautifully produced and wonderfully written, "My LIfe On A Plate" is a welcome addition to the modern cooks collection. Recipes, pulled from all points of the globe, are detailed, clearly explained, and easy to replicate. Kelis provides anecdotes for recipes that add personality and style to the collection and help to personalize Kelis to the reader.

By Will The photos are focused on the food, not the table setting making the photography for this some of the best I've seen in a cookbook. The ingredients list are surprisingly basic, where there are specialty requests, such as smoked paprika, you can count on additional recipes using it to justify the cost. I've cooked some of these recipes from her Cooking Channel specials, and they're included here if you want to try one or two before decding to buy the book. These recipes seem designed for a dinner party, theres alot of food when your done. I don't agree with all the ingredients chosen but the proportions and balance are very, very good. Much of it seems of the current food scene with Chili that has bacon and bourbon, and a turkey meatloaf that qualifies as Paleo. None of the recipes I feel like abandoning but when I disagree I feel inspired to make it my own. Thats the second best compliment I can give. The best, is after looking through this book and showing it to friends I kept finding myself saying I have someone I can make this for. You should note this book is for omnivores.

Not only are her mysteries my favorite series fiction By Rita Mayberry What a treat to review “Goldy’s Kitchen Cookbook: Cooking, Writing, Family Life” by Diane Mott Davidson! Not only are her mysteries my favorite series fiction, but also I actually met and visited with Diane at a long ago IACP conference. It was a time when she had just started with these delightful foodie murder mysteries about a caterer turned sleuth.Diane was kind to me in a elitist group of chefs and food writers that made me feel like a pretender to be writing about food on the (unheard of at the time) Internet. Diane was genuinely interested in this new genre that I was exploring, taking an active interest in what it was all about – a sign of a serious writer! After that brief encounter, I have followed her books religiously through the years. In them she always managed to examine relevant topics of one sort or another. Her protagonist is a victim of spousal abuse before it became a cause célèbre, and her family faced the blatant snobbery (aka bullying) that upscale environments seem to foster. As the icing on the proverbial cake, each novel is peppered liberally with wonderful recipes from the events Goldy caters in the books. Each recipe has been lovingly developed at the meticulous hand of Diane Mott Davidson, an amazing cook as well as a writer. This cookbook chronicles the evolution of Goldy, the caterer and of Diane, the writer, as well as the kitchen adventures they share. It tells a bit about Diane, a bit about writing, and a lot about cooking and developing recipes. It is a wonderful read, and the recipes make it well worth the cost of admission. Be sure to try her Chile Rellenos Torta with a crisp green salad for a quick supper that will leave your family clamoring for more. And then be sure to dig into her chocolate desserts. There are so many delicious treats for the chocoholics among you that you will be drooling over them and baking them up with confidence from the clear and simple instructions provided. Also, do not miss her father’s bread recipe or the cookie recipes. I have made her Cereal Killer Cookies a number of times for my family. This is a family cookbook that includes many of the favorites from Goldy’s Colorado catering business and gives you a personal glimpse into the life of Goldy’s creator. Don’t miss it!

Low-Carb Recipes or How I Lost Thirty Pounds and Kept It Off." Recipes include "Luscious Arugula Salad;" "Cauliflower Mash, or How To Get By Without Potatoes;" and others in this chapter. The book has an introduction and epilogue to explain the author to new readers. The cookbook is actually entertaining and original in the author's comments, suggestions, and recipes. The author writes about her cooking experiences and her family's taste. Davidson is influenced by her environment and is inspired by a variety of cuisine around her. The author is also friendly, professional, and open to new ideas. I really enjoyed reading about her inspiration and her background while reading this book. This book is full of wonderful innovative recipes and the author is quite an entertaining personality.I would have enjoyed colorful pictures if possible for the final edition. Even then, I would still highly recommend this cookbook to cooks, chefs, and foodies everywhere. There are also many wonderful stories about the recipe themselves.

Well written, fun to read cookbook By Graves Diane Davidson has been writing cozy mystery’s about a caterer for years. and now she has put together a cook book based on what her protagonist, Goldy, creates. The concept is pretty simple Caterers get invited to all sorts of places to provide food, like Victorian servants, if they do their job no one notices them but they see everything and when they keep getting involved in murders at events, well….Diane has done a good job making a cook book, not an anthem to her characters. With chapters arranged by the topic, not book, and the name of the book where the dish came from is supplied along with interesting commentary about the dishes’ inspiration and this is what really makes the book. any cook book will list ingredients and how to assemble them but a good cook book makes you want to do it, small little anecdotes about the meal makes it sound like something fun to try.The recipes themselves are not over the top. Each takes about a page total and while different do not seem to contain many hard to find ingredients, (I’m still looking for pickled walnuts for a Jennifer Patterson recipe from the 1990s!) so it’s not going to strain anyone with a decent pantry or local megamart to create these. A few pictures would have helped. Diane explains how these drive up the costs of cook books but still, she says presentation of food is important but the reader is left to wing it.I haven’t tried any of these yet but they look interesting and I’ll update this when I know how they work out. As an interesting aside I’m not sure I’d want the patronage of Diane or the business of Goldy. A great many of the restaurants Diane cites as sources she also says have closed and when Goldy goes somewhere, people actual die. I mean really ladies, I’ll read the books but keep my distance.

Review "True Thai, with its thoughtful recipes and arresting photographs, brings the bright and enchanting spirit of Thailand to life. It is a feast for the eyes and the imagination—a pleasure both to read and to cook from." -James Oseland, editor-in-chief of Rodale's Organic Life and author of Cradle of Flavor   "I'm so happy to see a beautiful, imaginative Thai cookbook by a talented Thai-born chef and cook—it's about time! The location photos transport us to Thailand and the recipes are anchored in Hong Thaimee's knowledge of Thai home cooking and street food riches." -Naomi Duguid, author of Burma: Rivers of Flavor   "Hong Thaimee has become a voice for authentic, modern Thai cuisine and an influencer in the culinary industry. Without a doubt, I will soon be making one of her recipes." -Jean-Georges Vongerichten  "True Thai is pulsating with flavor, color, and passion. The love to which this book is dedicated comes through on every page—a bold welcome to Hong Thaimee's table—TRUE THAT!" -Anita Lo, Annisa   "Hong Thaimee's True Thai is the Thai cookbook we've been waiting for in the United States. Chef Thaimee was a passionate competitor against me on Iron Chef America, but my favorite thing about her book is the inspiration she gets from her family to bring tantalizing flavors to your table." -Bobby Flay, author of Brunch at Bobby's"Hong Thaimee brings humor to tales of her own childhood in Chiang Mai. As you turn the pages of her lush cookbook, you feel as though she's taking you along on a family vacation to Southern Thailand, Bangkok, and New York, and it's a privilege."-Cookbooks365.com"Who can resist a Thai cookbook that takes you beyond the familiar favorites at your corner restaurant, while still being more or less doable on a weeknight (especially if you live near a well-stocked Asian grocer)? I know I can't. Yes, you'll find pad Thai and yum nua in here. But mah mah instant noodles? With crab and Chinese broccoli? Candied salted chiles? Watermelon and Thai basil fruit shake? Hong Thaimee, chef at Ngam in New York, doesn't hesitate to go there, either."-NPR BOOKS"The recipes are very well written and ever enticing."-THE HUFFINGTON POST "True Thai is one of the best Thai cookbooks on the market. . . True Thai is particularly flavorful and healthy. Once you try it, it will become part of your culinary experience." -THE WASHINGTON BOOK REVIEW

If you think the same, fret not, I'm here. I'm not a novice to Thai cooking, as I've cooked approximately 70% of the recipes in Pok Pok and 50% of the recipes in Leela's Simple Thai Food. I've also been to Thailand for a few weeks last year so I know more or less how things should taste. This book arrived a few days ago and I had the ingredients for the Ook Gai so I thought why not give that a spin. It turned out HORRIBLY WRONG. it was very soupy with the 4 cups (1 quarter) of chicken broth, and not salty enough, and definitely not creamy like the pictures stated. I followed the recipe's suggested 20 minute+10 minute cooking time and the amount of liquid in the pot was way too much. I left the stove on to simmer for an hour more to see if the sauce reduced but it's still too watery and definitely not creamy like the picture looks.I'll try more recipes and edit my review, but so far not so good.Edit 1:Cooked the coconut rice with mango today. When I read the recipe I found it weird that she would use jasmine essence instead of pandan, but whatever floats her boat as long as it taste good. Well, after cooking, I can say that it cannot be described with the adjective "good", as the 1tsp of jasmine essence really messed things up. The whole pot of rice was very very very jasminy, and it was quite nasty. Had to throw out the whole pot, and in the future I'll stick with Leela's recipe if I want a sweeter version and the Pok Pok one if I want a slightly salty version. I'm gonna cook the Green curry in a few days and see how that goes, but I'm very skeptical.Edit 2: Made the green curry today. Can't say it's the best green curry I've made, but it's edible. Be sure to only use 2 tablespoons of fish sauce and 2 tablespoons of palm sugar as opposed to the 3 called for in the book. 3 would be waaay too much for just 1 can of coconut milk. Also I find the 8 minute simmering time for a curry is WAY too short. I've tasted it at 8 minutes then at 1 hour and the 1 hour tastes much more flavorful.

Get ready to find some things you never expected to find in a book about wine. Things like regrets, migrant labor, war, financial crises, and post-apartheid economics. Things, too, like following a calling, and doing something even though it makes no sense, and creating the life you imagine for yourself. For the people you'll meet in these twelve chapters, wine does so much more than quench thirst. Wine is how they express themselves to the world. It's how they put food on the table for their families. It's how they carve their niche. Sometimes it's even their tool to fight repression and discrimination. Hungry for Wine is also a memoir about how the author went from simply liking the taste of wine, to tasting it every day, to writing about it 365 days a year, to traveling the world in search of the people and the stories in this book. Some people see the world in a grain of sand. Now you can see it in a glass of wine. This book will change the way you look at wine. Forever.

Hungry for Wine: Seeing the World Through the Lens of a Wine Glass, by Cathy Huyghe

Review "Cathy Huyghe's book is most certainly not a how-to-become-a-wine-connoisseur-in-X-number-of-days, but rather an exploration of what a life that is passionate about wine looks like, feels like and sounds like." -Randall Grahm, Winemaker and Owner, Bonny Doon Vineyard"Cathy is a master storyteller, she makes us dream of sipping those wines she presents, of visiting those places, of meeting those people. A book that invites you to reflect, while reading it with one hand. Keep a glass of wine in the other." -Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW"What an opus! Huyghe gives us a real world with real people, dirt, mold, war, economic dislocation. The unexpected -- a rabbit, octopi, a wine cemetery -- and above all, a people whose hearts have been forged in the furnace of life." -Allegra Jordan, Author of The End of Innocence"Brilliantly written, Hungry for Wine exceeds my expectations in every chapter. It is sincere, refreshing, and significant. Where other writers have failed, Cathy has succeeded in humanizing wine." -Arlene Oliveros, Certified Sommelier, Founder/CEO of World of Wines (WOW), Canada & Philippines

The unexpected -a rabbit, octopi, a wine cemetery - and above all, a people whose hearts have been forged in the furnace of life. Hungry for Wine provides an extraordinary and global lens on the people behind the drops in our glass. I have a new understanding about the people of the land who bring us incredibly unique and diverse wines. After reading HUNGRY FOR WINE, I hope never to drink wine again without a full cup of reverence.

As a transplant to a wine region in Northern Italy I have come to appreciate the back story of the wine and the winemaker in a very different way. Nuances I could never know by simply picking up a bottle at my neighborhood wine shop. The story behind what is in the glass - and, how it made its way there - makes it that much more special. I was especially drawn to the chapters of wine areas I know little about, Patagonia, Syria, even the urban winery in Portland for a different reason. It's where I grew up.I love this line from Chapter 12: "The life a winemaker, in other words, is anything but glamorous." I've come to learn that first hand getting to know the producers in my region. At the heart of it, those making the wine are farmers. With that comes many challenges and it was incredible to see how those play out in difference cultures, from vantage points I never considers. Grazie Mille, Cathy. I look forward to the next installment.

A Terrific Debut Book About Wine By Mark Spivak Finally: a wine book that is not pompous, boring, or written by someone who believes himself or herself to be the God of the grape. In Hungry for Wine: Seeing the World Through the Lens of a Wine Glass, Cathy Huyghe narrates her journey from wine lover to wine writer in a compelling and human way. The book consists of twelve chapters that focus on wine-related stories from around the globe---people and producers the author has visited and bonded with---and each concludes with a tasting note on a specific wine that relates to that chapter. There are some powerful stories here. The first one, “How to Live Your Wine Life With No Regrets,” tells the tale of a 93 year-old wine collector in West, Cambridge, Mass., who has amassed a formidable cellar over the years. He shares a problem common to many of us: he has become more focused on collecting than drinking. As he gives the narrator a tour of his underground cellar, it becomes clear that most of the great bottles are past their prime and undrinkable. In the act of obsessively waiting for the perfect moment to drink each bottle, the man has denied himself that pleasure. The tasting note focuses on the 1970 Rauzan-Gassies, one of the wines the collector displays during the visit. Huyghe tracks down two bottles and finds them to be oxidized to the point of vinegar. She barely needs to draw the parallel---in life, as in wine, you’re far better off seizing the moment while you can best enjoy it.Many of the other tales are just as vivid. Huyghe takes us to a Greek winery struggling to prosper in the midst of the country’s ongoing economic crisis; visits the only producer in Syria, an operation that somehow continues to make wine in the midst of war and revolution; she takes us hiking in Patagonia, and gives us a rare glimpse of the people who are really responsible for the wine we drink---the vineyard workers who endure the arduous and sometimes dangerous job of harvesting grapes.Get Cathy Huyghe’s book and curl up with a glass or two. When you finish, you’ll be much hungrier for wine than when you started.Disclosure: I received a free review copy of this book.
