Diane Mott Davidson is the author of seventeen bestselling mysteries featuring caterer/sleuth Goldy Schulz, a woman who “took the lemon that life had given her and made not just lemonade but Lemon Chicken, Lemon Bars, Lemon Cookies and Lemon Meringue Pie.” Each Goldy novel includes recipes for scrumptious dishes from the adored character’s kitchen. Now, Davidson has collected these treasured recipes and some brand-new dishes in one volume for the first time.

Here are recipes for Appetizers and Soups, Eggs and Cheese, Salads and Starches, Meat, Poultry, and Fish, Breads, Desserts, and finally Low-Carb Recipes (how Davidson lost thirty pounds and kept them off). Most of the dishes came from “playing around with dishes tasted in restaurants.” Others are family favorites, some came from friends, and a few are “happy accidents.” At last, fans can enjoy delicious fare such as Bacon-Wrapped Artichokes with Dijon Cream Sauce, Diamond Lovers’ Hot Crab Dip, Sweethearts’ Swedish Meatballs in Burgundy Sauce, André’s Coq au Vin, Ice-Capped Gingersnaps, Damson-in-Distress Plum Tart, and Dad’s Bread.

Not only are her mysteries my favorite series fiction By Rita Mayberry What a treat to review “Goldy’s Kitchen Cookbook: Cooking, Writing, Family Life” by Diane Mott Davidson! Not only are her mysteries my favorite series fiction, but also I actually met and visited with Diane at a long ago IACP conference. It was a time when she had just started with these delightful foodie murder mysteries about a caterer turned sleuth.Diane was kind to me in a elitist group of chefs and food writers that made me feel like a pretender to be writing about food on the (unheard of at the time) Internet. Diane was genuinely interested in this new genre that I was exploring, taking an active interest in what it was all about – a sign of a serious writer! After that brief encounter, I have followed her books religiously through the years. In them she always managed to examine relevant topics of one sort or another. Her protagonist is a victim of spousal abuse before it became a cause célèbre, and her family faced the blatant snobbery (aka bullying) that upscale environments seem to foster. As the icing on the proverbial cake, each novel is peppered liberally with wonderful recipes from the events Goldy caters in the books. Each recipe has been lovingly developed at the meticulous hand of Diane Mott Davidson, an amazing cook as well as a writer. This cookbook chronicles the evolution of Goldy, the caterer and of Diane, the writer, as well as the kitchen adventures they share. It tells a bit about Diane, a bit about writing, and a lot about cooking and developing recipes. It is a wonderful read, and the recipes make it well worth the cost of admission. Be sure to try her Chile Rellenos Torta with a crisp green salad for a quick supper that will leave your family clamoring for more. And then be sure to dig into her chocolate desserts. There are so many delicious treats for the chocoholics among you that you will be drooling over them and baking them up with confidence from the clear and simple instructions provided. Also, do not miss her father’s bread recipe or the cookie recipes. I have made her Cereal Killer Cookies a number of times for my family. This is a family cookbook that includes many of the favorites from Goldy’s Colorado catering business and gives you a personal glimpse into the life of Goldy’s creator. Don’t miss it!

Recipes include "Luscious Arugula Salad;" "Cauliflower Mash, or How To Get By Without Potatoes;" and others in this chapter. The book has an introduction and epilogue to explain the author to new readers. The cookbook is actually entertaining and original in the author's comments, suggestions, and recipes. The author writes about her cooking experiences and her family's taste. Davidson is influenced by her environment and is inspired by a variety of cuisine around her. The author is also friendly, professional, and open to new ideas. I really enjoyed reading about her inspiration and her background while reading this book. This book is full of wonderful innovative recipes and the author is quite an entertaining personality.I would have enjoyed colorful pictures if possible for the final edition. Even then, I would still highly recommend this cookbook to cooks, chefs, and foodies everywhere. There are also many wonderful stories about the recipe themselves.

Well written, fun to read cookbook By Graves Diane Davidson has been writing cozy mystery’s about a caterer for years. and now she has put together a cook book based on what her protagonist, Goldy, creates. The concept is pretty simple Caterers get invited to all sorts of places to provide food, like Victorian servants, if they do their job no one notices them but they see everything and when they keep getting involved in murders at events, well….Diane has done a good job making a cook book, not an anthem to her characters. With chapters arranged by the topic, not book, and the name of the book where the dish came from is supplied along with interesting commentary about the dishes’ inspiration and this is what really makes the book. any cook book will list ingredients and how to assemble them but a good cook book makes you want to do it, small little anecdotes about the meal makes it sound like something fun to try.The recipes themselves are not over the top. Each takes about a page total and while different do not seem to contain many hard to find ingredients, (I’m still looking for pickled walnuts for a Jennifer Patterson recipe from the 1990s!) so it’s not going to strain anyone with a decent pantry or local megamart to create these. A few pictures would have helped. Diane explains how these drive up the costs of cook books but still, she says presentation of food is important but the reader is left to wing it.I haven’t tried any of these yet but they look interesting and I’ll update this when I know how they work out. As an interesting aside I’m not sure I’d want the patronage of Diane or the business of Goldy. A great many of the restaurants Diane cites as sources she also says have closed and when Goldy goes somewhere, people actual die. I mean really ladies, I’ll read the books but keep my distance.
