By Bookwyrm I bought several Bento items for my daughter for Christmas, including Totoro-themed Bento Boxes, sauce containers, bento bags, recipe books,etc.. She's having a lot of fun creating lunches for her Bento box. And her dad is also reaping the benefit. :) I'll share all the items we bought as we launched wholesale into the Bento adventure. We've cooked many interesting meals - no misses yet! And everyone's had fun with their Bento boxes. By Nami | Just One Cookbook After having this cookbook and trying some recipes from it for more than 4 months, I'm here to say that this book is really awesome and I highly recommend to anyone from the beginners to more advanced bento makers. For full disclosure, the author Ming is my blogger friend and I received this book to review for my blog and YouTube channel. However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.I have to say the best part about this cookbook is that it's very user friendly. Here are some of my points:1) Lots of pictures: There are no single page that does not contain a picture, except for Contents and Glossary. Each recipe has FULL step by step pictures, not just pictures, very detailed, well-photographed pictures. The final photos of the recipes are all beautifully taken, which inspires me to make bentos just like how she makes them.2) Well organized: The book starts with the explanation of bento, and continues to explain about the bento boxes, tools, and techniques before getting into recipes. Each recipe has a big final picture, detailed ingredients and well-written directions with large step by step pictures. Toward the end, Ming also shares simple quick recipes that can be added to your bento, in case you need one or a few more dishes to pack into bento.3) Details!: I can't emphasize enough how detailed this cookbook is. I love more pictures and descriptions and this book has them all.One feedback that I have is that I wish recipes have approx time to prepare the bento or the level of difficulty. As a blogger myself, I know this is a very hard to specify because everyone has different skills and preparation time can vary. However, the general amount of time or level of difficulty will save readers time to figure out which bento to try depending on their level or time they have. This cookbook contains lots of creative ideas that I wouldn't be able to come up on my own and it is si inspiring! It's really fun to go through pages with my children and they love being part of making some of food art together on the weekends.p.s. I had so much fun making her Piggy Spam Musubi bento! http://www.justonecookbook.com/piggy-spam-musubi-bento/

PDF Ebook Call If You Need Me: The Uncollected Fiction and Other Prose (Vintage Contemporaries), by Raymond Carver

Raymond Carver’s complete uncollected fiction and nonfiction, including the five posthumously discovered “last” stories, found a decade after Carver’s death and published here in book form for the first time. Call If You Need Me includes all of the prose previously collected in No Heroics, Please, four essays from Fires, and those five marvelous stories that range over the period of Carver’s mature writing and give his devoted readers a final glimpse of the great writer at work. The pure pleasure of Carver’s writing is everywhere in his work, here no less than in those stories that have already entered the canon of modern literature.

Call If You Need Me: The Uncollected Fiction and Other Prose (Vintage Contemporaries), by Raymond Carver

Amazon.com Review This varied collection of fiction and prose from the late, great Raymond Carver comes, once again, with an introduction by his widow, Tess Gallagher. The posthumous Carver industry, as overseen by Gallagher, rivals only that of Sylvia Plath for its thoroughness. Perhaps it's no coincidence: both were singular, contagiously influential writers who died too early. But Plath died famously miserable, while Carver died famously happy, having conquered alcohol, loneliness, and obscurity--having conquered, indeed, everything but his own disobedient cancerous cells.

Call If You Need Me includes works previously collected, as well as some that have never been seen before. Five new stories, discovered by Gallagher among Carver's papers, are themselves worth the price of admission. Particularly haunting is "Kindling," a tale of a man who rents a room in a house for a few nights in the hopes of writing a letter to his wife. "He'd just spent twenty-eight days at a drying-out facility," we read. "But during this period his wife took it into her head to go down the road with another drunk, a friend of theirs." The main elements here: a river, a couple in the other room, an unfinished letter waiting on the desk. All this is vintage Carver, as well wrought and engrossing as the Cathedral stories.

Following the new fiction are sections devoted to book reviews, introductions, and early stories. Each presents Carver in a different pose, a different voice. It's interesting and illuminating to compare his casual, often catty discussions of contemporary literature with his deeply felt autobiographical essays. Despite the mysterious purity of his writing, he's more than capable of engaging in literary feuds and pissing matches. Not to be missed, however, is the wrenching autobiographical piece "My Father's Life," which previously appeared in Fires. Also named Raymond, Carver's father struggled with alcohol, failure, and mental illness just as his son did--and just as his son did, he wanted to come out the other side and see his life clearly. This is an essay about how people blur into their parents, echo them even as they leave them behind. Trying to reckon with his father's passing, Carver also reckons with his own life: his constant struggle to keep his eyes open, to write something good or maybe true, to write something that would outlast him. --Emily White

From Publishers Weekly For fans of Carver, who died in 1988, the five newly discovered stories collected here are like a stash of diamonds stumbled upon in a long-abandoned mine. The writer's style is, as always, spare and succinct, demonstrating Carver's ability to see deep into the human heart and expose human frailty in a way that leads readers to understand things they have known all along but never before identified. The title story deals with the dissolution of a marriage, a subject Carver practically had a patent on. A couple, both engaged in affairs, decide to spend a quiet summer together in an attempt to mend their marriage. "Kindling" concerns a recovering alcoholic who tries to exorcise his demons by chopping a pile of logs into kindling. Possibly the strongest narrative is "What Would You Like to See?" in which a couple who have been bad tenants in the past try to redeem themselves by leaving their rental in spotless condition. Rewarded with a good-bye dinner, they congratulate themselves on their cordial relationship with their landlords, only to be snubbed the next morning when an unfortunate incident changes the tenor of their leave-taking. Carver's many fans will initially be attracted to this collection by the new stories, but they won't be disappointed by the remainder of the book, which includes five early stories, a fragment from a novel and assorted nonfiction piecesAbook reviews, essays and brief meditationsAthe most interesting of which focus on Carver's theories of fiction writing. (Jan. 16) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist The late Raymond Carver unwittingly spearheaded the literary movement called minimalism, and even though that school of writing is rather passe these days, Carver will remain forever in the pantheon of important U.S. short story writers. His widow, writer Tess Gallagher, with the help of editor William L. Stull, has compiled what she calls the "last of the last": Carver's uncollected stories, including some never before published. To a one, they demonstrate the author's characteristic bare-bones style as he placed characters of modest means and resources into the kind of ordinary crises that define ordinary lives. Gathered here, too, but taking a back seat to the stories, are all the nonfiction pieces left uncollected at the time of Carver's death. These include essays, introductions, and book reviews; and in these, his trademark pared-down prose style worked as effectively as in his short stories. Also appearing here is a fragment of a novel, which, in only seven pages, can't be seen as anything close to a developed work. Brad HooperCopyright © American Library Association. You just can't judge him, you only can stare at him. You can even try to understand him, but you don't really have to. There is something beautiful and small hidden in every adjective, every description, every end of a story. Raymond Carver's love for human actions is everywhere in his writing. He puts big attention in little details, uncovering the small moments in every relationationship. You and your wife. Your wife and her friends. Tons of couples having dinner with other couples. Every little thing is a whole world for Carver. This book comes with four new stories recently discovered, a couple of great essays (the great "My father's life"), early stories, introductions, books reviews and a small uncomppleted fragment of a novel. Definitively, it's Carver for friends. If you are not familiar with his books, you should start with his most famous books, as "What we talk abgout when we talk about love", or his first collection of stories, "Will you please be quiet, please?". Any other case, you are welcome to enter this house.

Good stories, the rest is fluff By Ubaid Dhiyan Call If You Need Me is a collection of writings by Raymond Carver that wouldn't fit into any of his many short story collections. This anthology has five previously unpublished stories as well as a smattering of essays, notes and book reviews. I enjoyed the stories, of the other writing there were hits and misses - the introductions and the book reviews for example were there merely for the sake completeness and don't really serve much of a purpose. Recommended for the short stories.

9 of 12 people found the following review helpful. New stories great; disappointing book for real Carver fans By A Customer I am excited that there are "new" stories by Raymond Carver. "Call If You Need Me" and "Kindling" are among his best. The rest of the book is disappointing to me: I didn't realize that this would just be the new stories tacked on to NO HEROICS, PLEASE. Essentially, serious readers of Carver's work are being asked to buy the same book twice. "Call If You Need Me" can be found in this year's O. Henry anthology, and "Kindling" can be found in the current edition of Best American Short Stories. The other new stories, I guess, can be found in past issues of Esquire magazine. If the new stories were instead collected in some other way - say, in a slim volume alone, or with some unpublished work by other worthy writers, then I wouldn't be as disappointed. I was expecting a new book altogether -- not just new pages. Still, these stories need to be read. NO HEROICS, PLEASE is a book worth owning, too. If you don't already own it, then I recommend this title. Otherwise, find the new stories elsewhere.

Between the silver ribbon of morning and the green glittering ribbon of sea, the boat touched Harwich and let loose a swarm of folk like flies, among whom the man we must follow was by no means conspicuous—nor wished to be. There was nothing notable about him, except a slight contrast between the holiday gaiety of his clothes and the official gravity of his face. His clothes included a slight, pale grey jacket, a white waistcoat, and a silver straw hat with a grey-blue ribbon. His lean face was dark by contrast, and ended in a curt black beard that looked Spanish and suggested an Elizabethan ruff. He was smoking a cigarette with the seriousness of an idler. There was nothing about him to indicate the fact that the grey jacket covered a loaded revolver, that the white waistcoat covered a police card, or that the straw hat covered one of the most powerful intellects in Europe.

The Innocence of Father Brown, by G. K. Chesterton

Review ''G. K. Chesterton's tales [are] of the unassuming Catholic priest who claims that his work at the confessional (where he has to do 'next to nothing but hear men's real sins') puts him in an excellent position to solve the bizarre crimes that come his way in pre-First World War England . . . The unassuming cleric, whose humble conviction that his God will eventually triumph over the souls of even the most evil of criminals, is the quiet but insistent heartbeat of these unusual exercises in detective fiction.'' --Sunday Times (London)

From the Publisher 8 1-hour cassettes

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

The Best Mystery Write EVER By Patricia Harrelson I read this on the recommendation of my 14 year old grandson who claims Chesterton is the best mystery writer EVER! My grandson just might be right. Clearly Chesterton is a highly intelligent story-crafter. This collection of short stories about Father Brown kept me awake and alert and ALWAYS surprised regarding the outcome. There was nothing formulaic or predictable in these stories. Father Brown is delightful in a Columbo fashion (perhaps the TV detective was modeled after him), and his sleuthing is remarkably unique. I loved Chesterton's use of language too. His sentences are long and luscious and his vocabulary makes reading a delicious experience. I must say, I'm quite happy to know that a 14 year old finds Chesterton so exceptional.

27 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Introducing Father Brown By Michele L. Worley The 12 stories herein can of course be found in THE COMPLETE FATHER BROWN, and THE ANNOTATED INNOCENCE OF FATHER BROWN. This is the first Brown collection, which introduces not only Father Brown himself but Flambeau, the daring thief. Father Brown worked on Flambeau during their early confrontations, and eventually persuaded him to give up his life of crime. He became Father Brown's friend and sometime sidekick, and appears in three-quarters of the stories herein, in one capacity or another."The Blue Cross" - The great detective Valentin knows that Flambeau the thief has selected a little English priest as his target, since the priest has been entrusted with a valuable cross set with sapphires. But when Valentin begins tracking the priest across the city, a very odd pattern of incidents begins to emerge."The Secret Garden" - Father Brown is a dinner guest in Valentin's home."The Queer Feet" - 'The Twelve True Fishermen', meeting for their annual fish dinner at a small, exclusive restaurant, saw the usual count of waiters - but one had died hours before! Father Brown (called in earlier for the waiter's dying confession and last rites) unravels a spectacular caper."The Flying Stars" - Flambeau's last crime (as noted in the 1st paragraph of the story), cited as an example of his love of artistically matching settings with crimes. His confrontation with Father Brown resonates nicely with the preceding story's metaphor of Brown having him on a line like a fish."The Invisible Man" - Locked-room mystery. The inventor was found murdered in his flat, but witnesses say that nobody could have gone past them without being seen."The Honour of Israel Gow" - This story actually takes place *after* "The Wrong Shape". The Earl of Glengyle was a hermit - and after finding some very odd circumstances in the Earl's home after his death, Flambeau and Father Brown begin to fear that Satanism is involved."The Wrong Shape" - The writer was a bad husband and an unpleasant man, and the beautifully penned suicide note seemed almost too good to be true."The Sins of Prince Saradine" - Flambeau takes Father Brown along to collect on the prince's invitation, sent to him during his criminal career, to visit if he were to become respectable, since he greatly admired Flambeau's stunt of once arranging for one policeman to arrest another, when both were looking for *him*."The Hammer of God" - The last two Bohuns are the curate, who pursues the beauty of his church, and the colonel, who chases women. But if he managed to catch the blacksmith's wife, it may well have been the death of him."The Eye of Apollo" - Locked-room mystery. Father Brown came to visit Flambeau, who has taken an office in a new building. Pauline Stacey, a rich idealist in a neighbouring office, fell down the empty elevator shaft that same day - when nobody else, apparently, was in the building."The Sign of the Broken Sword" - Why has Father Brown taken Flambeau to every monument to the memory of the great general, finally ending here at his grave? "Where does a wise man hide a leaf? In a forest." Someone, unfortunately, once took that saying to heart."The Three Tools of Death" - With three weapons visible on the scene, why did the victim die by a fall from a window?

He could craft landscapes, settings, and locations with vivid textures, and possessed a cunning knack that made the ordinary seem thoroughly outlandish and the peculiar rather tame. This collection of short mysteries aptly shows off his skill as a writer; whereas most authors would use an entire novel to build tension, cultivate atmosphere, and weave a complex mystery, Chesterton could do all that in a few brief pages - and at a much higher level of quality too! Reading this book is like reading twelve beautifully crafted novels in one, such is the quality.I won't spoil the stories for you; reading this book is a rewarding journey for the imagination, meeting many characters fantastic in their normalcy or surprisingly believable and realistic in their peculiarity, visiting locations stunningly brought to life with a writing skill that is second to none, and delving into mysterious events that are often confusing, complex, and entertaining for the brain. Don't pick this book up if you want some pedestrian tales; pick it up if you want first-class storytelling that will keep you both guessing and thinking.

Inner Giant is much more than a book, it is a journey through the lives and experiences of its creators. It contains over twenty short stories written by a variety of authors, introduced by two fictional school boys adding a touch of humour and irony to the stories. The second part contains poetry of all shapes and sizes, conceived by different, but talented poets. There are several other parts to the book, each crammed with illustrations, photographs, paintings, essays, lesson materials and pieces of sound advice. All the material in the book has one message, do not stand for bullying, do not stand by bullying and do not bully others. The profits from the book are being donated to anti-bullying organizations. Making this unique work a must read for all. It’s time you found your own Inner Giant.

Versatile and Timely Help with Bullying By Elizabeth Horton-Newton, Author I was looking for a book about bullying for my granddaughter when I came upon “Inner Giant” by Frank Letras. Bullying has become so prevalent in our society and has touched so many lives that I wanted to prepare her for the possibility it could happen to her. This is actually a collection of short stories, poetry, pictures, and so much more. The best part is that it is set up for adults and children in an easily identifiable format. I was amazed at the versatility of the information included. There were stories I could share with my 8-year old granddaughter as well as others appropriate for my 15-year old grandson. Some of the stories and art are amusing others very serious. With an easy to follow color coded guide I could choose what to share with either child based on their age and their experience. Whether your family is being impacted by bullying or you are just a concerned parent or grandparent, teacher or friend, this is an excellent way to introduce a child to the possible perils they might face. It’s also a wonderful way to open up a dialogue with a child who might be reticent to discuss being bullied. I am so glad I found this book! Brilliant!

Find your INNER GIANT By Anita Kovacevic Some books do not offer an escape from reality, but they do help you deal with reality, and inspire you to help others do the same. This is one of such books. Bullying and abuse in all their forms are never an easy topic, will not make your summer more fun, and a book about it may not be something you would give someone as a gift with a shiny bow and in colourful wrapping paper. But the point is - this book talks about such difficult topics through stories (many based on true events), essays, poetry, illustrations, paintings, photos and songs, and even worksheets and project ideas for classroom use. The main goal of this book is to help people realize that being bullied or abused is not something you should be ashamed of, but something that must be dealt with. It inspires people to help those around them, be they the bullied or even bullies seeking attention, as well as to help themselves, by awakening our inner giants, our inner strength, the kindness we all possess. Being one of the contributors, I may be biased in my review, but I have already seen its positive effect on people as it was being created. There is something for everyone in Inner Giant, and whether you are a teacher, any kind of an educator, a parent or a grandparent, you will find something in this book to share with your family and friends, and especially those we cherish the most, and should protect the most - our children.

This monograph records progress in approximation theory and harmonic analysis on balls and spheres, and presents contemporary material that will be useful to analysts in this area.  While the first part of the book contains mainstream material on the subject, the second and the third parts deal with more specialized topics, such as analysis in weight spaces with reflection invariant weight functions, and analysis on balls and simplexes.  The last part of the book features several applications, including cubature formulas, distribution of points on the sphere, and the reconstruction algorithm in computerized tomography.

This book is directed at researchers and advanced graduate students in analysis. Mathematicians who are familiar with Fourier analysis and harmonic analysis will understand many of the concepts that appear in this manuscript: spherical harmonics, the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function, the Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem, the Riesz transform, and doubling weights are all familiar tools to researchers in this area.

Review

From the reviews:

“This research monograph is recommended to graduate students, mathematicians, physicists, and engineers who have an interest in analysis and approximation on the sphere, ball, and simplex. … At the end of each chapter one finds useful ‘notes and further results’, where the authors present an account of the sources used for the developments in the chapter as well as comments on related results.” (P. P. Petrushev, Mathematical Reviews, January, 2014)

“The book under review is the most detailed monograph on harmonic analysis, approximation and their applications in the spherical setting. … This monograph in whole and its various parts can be used both by researchers and by lecturers, for information and ideas by the formers and as a matter for special courses for students by the latters.” (Elijah Liflyand, zbMATH, Vol. 1275, 2014)

Good book in approximation and harmonic analysis on spheres and balls By Yu Guang Wang This is a book of Feng Dai and Yuan Xu who are both experts in approximations on spheres and balls. It contains the recent (up to 2013) progress in approximation by localized kernel on the sphere and weighted approximation as well as the introduction to the quadrature rules on the sphere, where the latest proof by Bondarenko et al. of the existence of spherical design is included.
