I seriously love mexican food By lyn I seriously love mexican food, and up until now only knew how to make a handful of recipes in my slow cooker with a Mexican inspiration. Not only can I make more now, but they're so delicious. Every recipe I have made in here, is a hit. They're easy to follow. With detailed directions. I can sub anything out too, which is really nice. This book is great for any lazy mexican food lovers like myself. (Or as I like to put it, a busy mom)Sample Provided

Often when I review a cook book I may use one or two recipes to give it a try, may even go back to them to use again. Just as frequently I shelve a book and don’t go back to it where it lingers collecting dust and irritating my conscience because I’m just not that into it but can’t part with it. This book was a whooooole ‘nother story! If you love Mexican food, have a crock pot and need an excuse to mix up a batch of margaritas then this one is a no brainer. Go. Get. This. Book. Seriously. Now. This cook book is so easy to use, beautifully designed and one I highly recommend (in case you hadn’t picked up on that.) I have a lot of great books lying around collecting dust and hurt feelings but this one is seldom off my counter. Pretty sure I heard it sigh one time and mention something about a headache but I put it to work anyway.

I had no idea and thought they were the same thing. Nope! A Crock Pot is a the brand name for a slow cooker and a slow cook is just that. This books not only contains recipes but it is also loaded with tips like these that makes the read informative and educational.Honestly, before this book, I knew a handful of slow cooker recipes. I desired to utilize my slow cooker more often but was ignorant on the topic and hence.....the purpose for book. Fall has arrived and I want to not only broaden slow cooking repertoire, but I want to basically wanted more "set in and forget it" dinners. This book is divided into chapters:Chapter 1- This ins and outs of slow cooking and how to use the slow cooker properly.Chapter 2: Mexican cooking and what are the staples to have on handChapter 3-9: Recipes that include soups, appetizers, main dishes, salsa, vegetarian dishes, seafood, dessertsThis is a great book if you want to 1. utilize your slow cooker and 2. with flavorful Mexican dishes. It is filled with beautiful pictures that are inspiring and have given me the tools to feel confident making tradition Mexican dishes. Highly recommend!

A Change of Mind and Other Stories consists of a novella, four short stories and one flash fiction piece. This collection puts the extremes of human behaviour under the microscope with the help of lashings of dark humour, and includes four pieces previously published in Writer’s Muse magazine. In A Change of Mind, Reuben is an office worker so meek and mild he puts up with daily bullying from his boorish male colleagues as if it’s just a normal part of his day. But when a stranger points him in the direction of a surgeon offering a revolutionary new procedure, he can’t pass up the chance to turn his life around. But this isn’t your average surgeon. For a start, he operates alone in a small room above a mechanic’s. And he promises to alter his patients’ personality so they can be anything they want to be… In Marissa, a man who is determined to find evidence of his girlfriend’s infidelity ends up wondering if he should have left well alone. The Dog God finds a chink in the armour of a man with a megalomaniacal desire to take over the world. In The Insomniac, a man who leads an obsessively regimented lifestyle on one hour’s sleep a night finds a disruption to his routine doesn’t work for him. Hole In One sees a dedicated golfer achieving a lifelong ambition. The Loner ends the collection on a note of hope as two family members try to rebuild their lives after they are torn apart by jealousy.

By Michelle Wallace This is a wonderful collection of short fiction.Nick Wilford's writing style is sharp and punchy and you'll find yourself sucked into these pieces. The main piece features Reuben, a timid and socially-challenged, thirty-six year old man with zero self-worth, who finds it impossible to stand up to the bullies in the office. Bullying is one of my pet peeves and my heart went out to Reuben.A neuro-surgical procedure which will help to rewire certain parts of his brain seems to be the answer to his problem. This surgery will be performed by a questionable doctor who operates above a mechanic shop, and he promises Reuben a major personality transformation and a brand new lease on life. My first thought: but at what cost? I'm a firm believer in the saying: if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is!I'll conclude on this cryptic note: be careful what you wish for because you just might get it. And will it be what you thought it would be?Read this book to find out for yourself!

Ullrich The advent of cosmetic surgery allows us to perfect our bodies, changing noses, tummies, or any other unsatisfactory aspect of ourselves with a flick of the scalpel. But what if a simple outpatient procedure could alter your personality? This is the intriguing question Nick Wilford explores in his novella, A Change of Mind.Reuben has endured bullying his entire life, but his timidity makes it impossible to stand up to his abusive co-workers or ask out the pretty girl from PR. When he's offered a chance to “upgrade” his personality with a radical new brain surgery technique, Reuben feels he's got nothing to lose. At first the transformation seems miraculous: Reuben enjoys his newfound charisma and self-confidence. But side effects include amplification of other, less desirable qualities, such as arrogance and violence. The doctor promised the procedure would change Reuben's life...but for better or worse?I couldn't put this story down. Reuben has a strong character voice, and his journey makes us question when and how we should remake ourselves. Witty, keenly observant writing makes for captivating narration. My only criticism is the abrupt ending. I expected a more protracted struggle between Reuben's impulses, a la “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. The sudden conclusion disappointed me, but maybe I just wanted the tale to continue! The other short stories in this collection also left me craving further development of their ideas, but Wilford's sharp writing style makes the snapshots enjoyable. His writing is some of the best I've encountered in indie fiction; I'd love to see that talent, and Wilford's knack for instantly thought-provoking situations, channeled into a full-length novel. For anyone interested in speculative fiction and snappy short stories, reading A Change of Mind is an afternoon well-spent.

I don’t normally read short fiction although I’ve taken an interest in it lately. I enjoyed most the novella which is the title of the collection. When you meet the main character, Reuben he is so downtrodden that your heart immediately goes out to him. He is bullied mercilessly by everyone around him. I think this is a theme that will resonate with almost anyone. Whether you’ve been picked on at school or had to deal with a particularly difficult coworker, you’ll feel Reuben’s pain. His low self-worth is palpable and Wilford does an expert job of showing how this colors his perception of the world around him. You’ll be cheering for Reuben when he is faced with the prospect of changing his lot in life. What follows is both gripping and somewhat bizarre. Wilford does an excellent job of keeping things mostly believable but laced with enough intrigue that you’re not really sure where things are going until the shocking end. Then you’ll find yourself wanting to go back and re-read everything. It will leave you wondering how reliable Reuben was as a narrator, which I absolutely love. The rest of the stories are much shorter but equally as riveting. Wilford’s ability to work an awesome plot-twist into such short pieces of fiction is simply amazing. My favorite of the shorter pieces was definitely Marissa, although I enjoyed all of them and felt disappointed when I reached the end of the collection. Don’t miss this one! It’s fantastic!

What We Talk About When We Talk About Love (Vintage Contemporaries), by Raymond Carver

Amazon.com Review "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love" is not only the most well-known short story title of the latter part of the 20th century; it has come to stand for an entire aesthetic, the bare-bones prose style for which Raymond Carver became famous. Perhaps, it could be argued, too famous, at least for his fiction's own good. Like those of Hemingway or any other writer similarly loved, imitated, parodied, and reviled, these stories can sometimes produce the sense of reading pastiche. "A man without hands came to the door to sell me a photograph of my house." "That morning she pours Teacher's over my belly and licks it off. That afternoon she tries to jump out the window." "My friend Mel McGinnis was talking. Mel is a cardiologist, and sometimes that gives him the right." What other writer ever produced first sentences like these? They are like doors into Carverworld, where everyone speaks in simple declarative phrases, no one ever stops at one beer, and failure or violence are the true outcomes of the American dream.

Yet these stories bear careful re-reading, like any truly important and enduring work. For one thing, Carver is one of the few writers who can make desperation--cutting your ex-wife's telephone cord in the middle of a conversation, standing on your own roof chunking rocks while a man with no hands takes your picture--deeply funny. Then there is the sheer craft that went into their creation. Despite their seeming simplicity, his tales are as artfully constructed as poems--and like poems, the best of them can make your breath catch in your throat. In the title piece, for instance, after the gin has been drunk, after the stories have been told, after the tensions in the room have come to the surface and subsided again, there comes a moment of strange lightness and peace: "I could hear my heart beating. I could hear everyone's heart. I could hear the human noise we sat there making, not one of us moving, not even when the room went dark."

Much of what happens in What We Talk About When We Talk About Love (1981) happens offstage, and we're left with tragedy's props: booze, instant coffee, furniture from a failed marriage, cigarettes smoked in the middle of the night. This is not merely a matter of technique. Carver leaves out a great deal, but that's only a measure of his characters' vulnerability, the nerve endings his stories lay bare. To say anything more, one feels, would simply hurt too much. --Mary Park

Review "Carver's fiction is so spare in manner that it takes a time before one realizes how completely a whole culture and a whole moral condition is represented by even the most seemingly slight sketch. This second volume of stories is clearly the work of a full-grown master." —Frank Kermode"Raymond Carver's America is...clouded by pain and the loss of dreams, but it is not as fragile as it looks. It is a place of survivors and a place of stories.... [Carver] has done what many of the most gifted writers fail to do: He has invented a country of his own, like no other except that very world, as Wordsworth said, which is the world to all of us." —Michael Wood, front page, The New York Times Book Review"Splendid.... The collection as a whole, unlike most, begins to grow and resonate in a wonderful cumulative effect." —Tim O'Brien, Chicago Tribune Book World"Carver not only enchants, he convinces." —J.D. Reed, Time

From the Inside Flap In his second collection of stories, as in his first, Carver's characters are peripheral people--people without education, insight or prospects, people too unimaginative to even give up. Carver celebrates these men and women.

"What does it MEAN, for God's sake?!" It took me a while to realise that Carver's genius isn't for the grand epiphany, the convoluted plot, or the surprise ending. His genius is for moments of pathos; for moments of carefully observed humanity; for human foibles unflinchingly, but never unkindly, revealed. You really have to read him for yourself to understand, but here's an example: the story "Gazebo", which is one of my favourites from this collection. The story works because what 'the gazebo' means to the couple in the story is something most of us have felt: a dream of future happiness that is now lost to us; lost because we don't see how we might escape the banality of our own lives; lost because we fail to see how close we are to achieving it, if only we could slightly change the way we see things, or the way we live. None of this is overtly stated in the story - and that's Carver's genius. It is simply implied by juxtaposition. Thematic statements and grand epiphanies undermine so many stories (even some of Carver's earlier ones) because they are embarrassing. I don't mean embarrassing for the writer, I mean embarrassing for us, the readers: to have these slightly pathetic, vaguely shameful, and yet very human moments which are recognisably our own shoved in our faces feels like an accusation, and one we understandably reject. But to have them placed before us, gently, apparently undeliberately, so that we might see them for ourselves is wonderful. It engages OUR powers of observation and reflection, not just the writer's. We see ourselves reflected there in the story, and it's a private moment of self-revelation, of self-understanding. And more often than not, this is NOT a life-changing experience for us. No, the effect is much simpler, more realistic and more honest. It's a feeling of: "Oh, thank God. Other people feel this way, too. I'm not alone." It's a moment of empathy, not of explanation. Carver gives us this gift many times, and so well. Go read everything he's written. Especially if you're interested in writing your own stories. Carver's small body of work has as much to teach us about writing as it does about our lives.

By A Customer Raymond Carver's friend Tobias Wolff (see Carver's essay on his friendship with Wolff and Pulizer Prize winner Richard Ford in Carver's collection NO HEROICS,PLEASE) said that when he read the short story "Cathedral" for the first time he had the feeling he was levitating off the couch where he was stretched out reading. I had the same response to this essential work WHAT WE TALK ABOUT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT LOVE as I emerged from my college library where I should have been studying, but was transfixed by this book I had just picked up by chance the day before. I had the feeling that I was floating across the campus toward the cafeteria for my evening meal after reading this book in one sitting. Who is Raymond Carver? Who is this guy ?, I kept saying to myself, feeling that all the persons and places I passed just NOW were the loveliest things I'd ever seen. How could anyone make me feel like that? I'm still wondering today and that was fourteen years ago! I might talk about Raymond Carver in very sophisticated terms today but my initial primal response still seems inexplicable. I have read everything I could get my hands on that Carver ever wrote or said, but this is the book in which Carver captured the solitary American experience at its heartfelt core. It shows what happens to us, the price we pay for our dreams , loves, and terrors. Or what is, perhaps, as the American poet Michael Palmer has characterized it: the "psychic cost of the American project." Carver wrote this book in the late 1970's just after alcoholism nearly killed him and he had given up everything just to SURVIVE (including, he thought back then, any sense that he might ever write again). My recommendation goes beyond the fact that this is my first and favorite Carver book. Why? This is it! This is where he did it. He stripped the prose here to its poetic core , and it was a wager, a Mallarmean throw of the dice; he would or would not write again with this book. The stories individually are astonishing, but together they become something larger, and more harrowing , and "dynamic". The stories turn into a work, That uniquely human thing we construct with our HANDS from whatever materials are there for us. Carver's whole life and attention are here , and whatever price he paid for that strange attentiveness which was uniquely his own (he's called called it "vision" in one of his essays from FIRES) it came together( ALL of it nearly) here in these pages. It is Carver, more than perhaps anyone else who did this kind of writing in the 70's and 80's who gave me the revelatory sense I have of what I would wish to care for most in my life . And how I might begin that difficult task every day that is given me. CARE. Carver must have loved that word. As the poet Robert Duncan has pointed out: "All the events, things and beings, of our life move then with the intent of a story revealing itself."

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Who We Talk About When We Talk About Carver By Brad The question of authorship should be immaterial to the reading of this work. Do we care what was left out? Do we care who wrote which sentence? In the end, whatever the process that produced them, this collection contains some of the most tragically beautiful stories I've read. The prose is minimal, but masterfully minimal -- it feels like the stories form the briefest of forays across the skin of a giant animal, and though you can't tell exactly what the animal is, or where it is going, you know there is something vaguely wrong, deep down below. The style Carver employs means that the smallest of incidents become important in mysterious ways, as if each part of the story, no matter how seemingly insignificant, contains part of the clue to the whole. But because of the sparse nature of the work, the clues never sum to a complete solution -- I feel like these stories reside somewhere between the tiny fictions we invent for people we glance at in the street, and fully-fledged realism which doesn't leave us room for imagination. Carver takes this space and with deft touches makes it seem both familiar and strange. Can't say enough about him. If you aspire to writing short stories, this will either set the bar for you or make you want to give up...

I enjoy every sip.I would love to learn to make various types of coffee at home without having to go to the baristas every time I want a different variety and also love to enjoy them with friends.By reading through this book I learnt about the amazing benefits of coffee. Some of the myths surrounding it is funny though. I found recipes interesting and easy. I loved the Swiss styled mocha, maple flavored coffee etc. Can't wait to try them all.

But I still drink it because I have to. I am working late at night and I need to drink it so that I can finish my entire task before going to bed. One thing I like about this book is that it provides ideas, more ideas about a variety of coffee that you will surely fall in love with. There are lots of recipes that you will discover. I am totally amazed and sure you will also feel the same.

I was only used to prepare Iced coffee, cappuccino and black coffee. I was really excited to try the coffee recipes in this book. Let me admit, each coffee has a unique taste and unique flavor. It has become very difficult for me choose from the wide varieties of recipes here. I loved every flavor but Italian style coffee with chocolate is my most favorite of all!

Multi-Genre Collection + You Vote for a Story to Become a Novel By Uncle G I picked up this eBook because I like to read short stories and I was pleasantly surprised because the author includes 30 short tales that span a wide variety of genres. Most of the stories are quite short, but not quite short enough to be considered flash fiction. There were several crime / detective stories, several fantasy tales, a few teen-angst stories, several loving-couples who weren't so loving. My overall impression is that the author has a extremely active imagination that moves in many different directions. Most story collections fit into one genre, but not CHALLENGE THE PROUD, this book spans them all. I think the author is at her best when writing noir crime stories but that is my personal preference, not by any means a criticism of her efforts in other areas such as fantasy. One interesting aspect to this book is the reader is asked to vote for the story or stories they want expanded into a novel. I voted for Twittercide because, for me, that story moved quickly and it had strong characters who traded witty banter while trying to solve a series of horrifying crimes.

A great collection of short stories By Dan This short story compilation is part of Julia Proud's 'Challenge the Proud' experiment, where she took phrases and prompts from her Twitter feed, and wrote short pieces of fiction based off of them. The 30 stories written here span genre and tone, from fantasy to sci-fi, from serious to light-hearted. All these stories are great reads - Julia comes up with interesting, engaging settings and scenarios, and her character writing is simply excellent. Her characters feel developed and real, and relationships between them feel authentic.I'd heartily recommend her Challenge the Proud book to any fans of fiction, and even the most busy reader can fit a story or two in during their day. It's free as well, so no need to worry if it fits in your book buring budget. My only complaint is, once the experiment is completed, only ONE of the stories will be chosen to be made into a full novel :)

Short stories to suit every mood By Curvygirlme An excellent collection of short stories, based on one liners, presented to Julia, as challenges on Twitter.Julia is a master storyteller, with a vivid imagination. Her writing skills make the stories come alive. There is a story for every taste and mood. My personal favorites are: "The White Ninja, Creative Clown Catastrophe, Twittercide and One of Them.Curl up with a cup of tea and let Julia take your imagination on wild roller coaster ride of fiction in every genre.

The Beggar in the Promised Land and Previously Untold Biblical Parables are not typical biblical stories read in religious school. Rather, the parables give a unique portrayal of some of our biblical ancestors, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Moses. The parables provide us with a non-traditional perspective of the Bible. They were written not only to educate and to inspire, but to entertain people of all ages.

They can be enjoyed for most ages and for religious and non-religious people. I really feel that in a time where faith is dwindling and religion often goes in an extreme direction, that these are easy-to-digest stories that really get to the heart of the morals and lessons found in the Torah. I highly recommend this book!
