Tragically, the dead woman is dressed in a wedding gown, even more disturbing for Lacey since she's about to become a bride. When the victim turns out to be a popular bartender with a bad-news ex-husband, it looks like a domestic quarrel turned deadly. But could there be something more sinister going on in this tight-knit community? Swept into the investigation, Lacey uncovers a killer with a morbid perspective on marriage.

From master of romantic suspense Kendra Elliot comes a fast-paced tale of obsession and murder.

They are at a resort scoping it out as a possible wedding venue when they find themselves in the middle of a murder investigation when a woman in a wedding dress is found floating in the resorts hot tub.Even though this was a novella sized book we still got a good murder mystery to follow from all aspects – the interrogations to the autopsies. One thing Jack and Lacey can’t do is walk away from a murder and when they find out Jack’s old partner is the Chief of Police in the small town they decide to hang around and help solve the murder. Jack and Lacey work well together and are even closer after everything they went through in Hidden. It was great to get to revisit them again and follow them along on the investigation that has a few surprises along the way.

I know it was a novella, I did not want it to end. It was good to see the two characters back from Hidden. Jack and Lacey are looking for a place to get married and stumble upon a dead bride. Kendra Elliot is an special type of author who can make you feel the intensity of the story as if you are there. Her knowledge of forensics also makes her stories very believable.I can't say enough about this series but you have to read them!!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great Novella!!! By Kelly Review will be posted at [...] .NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 1/2REVIEW:Another great story from Kendra. It was fun to see Jack & Lacey again even if it is not under the best of circumstances. Because really nothing can ruin a vacation like finding a dead body and be through head first in a murder investigation.I am not going to give you more than that. This is a novella and I don’t want to give too much away. This novella can easily be read as a stand alone, although if you have not read book 1 you might want to read it. Jack & Lacey are from book 1 Hidden.Disclaimer:I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

The characters within these stories confront moments ... not huge moments, but small bits of time and individuality in which perspective is transformed. Themes include personal crisis, loneliness, existentialism, the nature of memory, time's passage, aging, depression, suicide, interpersonal relationships, parenting, marriage, loss, fear, and epiphany. Hope Lies in Less is about the meaning of life.

Hope Lies in Less: Short Stories, by Kris Wehrmeister

Review If you are a reader, and you aren't reading this book, can you even call yourself a reader?  I love this collection.  - Tressie NelsonHope Lies in Less is awesome. Almost as good a chocolate. Better than first-time sex. How's that for a review?  You need these words.  - When Mom Can from If I WriteHope Lies in Less is an epic piece of masterful writing. Those familiar with Kris will not be disappointed, and those unfamiliar with her works will be hooked. - Rodney Lacroix, comedic author of Things Go Wrong For Me, Perhaps I've Said Too Much, and Romantic as Hell

From the Author Hope Lies in Less chronicles the unfolding of moments that might, in the normal course of things, go unnoticed except in their passing ... Smoke takes flight. Linens are drenched in urine. Routes are traced red upon a map. Blue eggs shatter against the windshield. A girl does not fit in a dollhouse. Invisible ink writes farewell. A lock turns on a hinge-splintered door. Children appear in limbs. Upon the mundanity of everyday details, lives are laid bare and disassembled. This deeply intimate collection of stories explores the shadowed truths of the moments between moments. Within the tellings of threshold, these stories examine what it is to exist thoughtfully in this world ... what it is to be human ... what it takes to reconcile the darkness with the light and accept that in the end, we all stop casting shadows. Meaning exists, but so does absence. Hope lies in less.

About the Author Kris Wehrmeister is the long-time author of the blog Pretty All True, at which she offers a mixture of humor, memoir, and literary fiction. Hope Lies in Less, Kris' first published book, is a collection of fictional short stories. Dark and unflinching in tone, Hope Lies in Less explores nothing less than the meaning of the moments that make up lives. Kris is a used-to-be attorney, mother of two daughters, and wife to one man. She lives in Lake Oswego, Oregon, where she spends her time arguing with her daughters Maj and Kallan, who are brilliant and obstreperous. When her daughters are at school, Kris argues with the dogs, of which there are three - Jack the Terrier, Persie the Labrador, and Hazel the Weimaraner. Additionally, although no one would describe Kris as a "people-person," she occasionally meets with friends for beer or coffee accompanied by petty disagreements, of which she is fond. Kris knows all the lyrics to all the songs, and she sings along. Always. In her spare time, Kris writes.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Worth every intense breath. By seamh As a longtime reader of Pretty All True, familiar with Kris' unique voice, I felt that the beauty of Hope Lies In Less lay somewhere between the words and the spaces between them. One of the themes connecting the disparate stories is that both events and emotions can be defined by their absence, a beautiful and haunting thought. While several of these stories could easily become novels on their own, each story is beautifully fleshed out and cohesive from beginning to end. I truly loved this collection, and while it tends toward the dark and intense, I do not believe that should scare anyone away. Read this book. Be changed by it.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A Strong Collection From a Powerful Voice By Sebastian Malloy Kris Wehrmeister uses words like a magician, casting spells and charms, and drawing the reader in with a power of storytelling that refuses to let go, even long after the last page has been turned. Her stories draw maps from the head to the heart and back again, and leave you wanting to further travel the roads of her explorations. A must-buy collection.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. These Words Will Not Leave You By HogsAteMySister Sometimes reading Kris Wehmeister's words makes you dreamy, sometimes worried, sometimes shaken. You are never left unmoved. Never. Kris draws you in, with or against your will. She has the power. Her eye for detail and ear for dialogue are damaged and unique. Sometimes she says so much with so little that your heart is in your mouth, or it falls to the ground. Several times, this collection of short stories made me feel like I did 30-plus years ago when I was a reporter in Waco, covering a triple murder. That's not because she writes about murder or death. It's because of what you see and hear and FEEL after reading her words, after absorbing their nuance. You taste the blood and bile and worry even if you can't exactly make out what's out there in the darkness. Kris' words can leave you speechless. But, here's the thing, they never leave you. She has that power.

The only reason I gave 1 star less because photos aren't included in all or most recipes. It would be nice to see how the baked goods look like with the help of photos. Other than lack of photos, I have nothing to complain. For American readers, the recipes use metric measurement as the author is from UK. However, I'm very familiar with using metric measurement when baking. So, I don't see it as a problem.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I liked this a lot By Candie I liked this a lot. A good read with a bunch of strong stories with dark tones, creepy surprises, malevolent villains, and bodies that just wont stay dead thanks to mechanical intervention. Steampunk yes, but with a definite twist of horror. Of special note were Ron Collins's GRAND DANGOOLIE: a neat voicy alternate historical set during WW2 where both Harry Houdini and Hitler's minions put in a magical appearance. I loved Cindie Geddes's chilling monastic piece THE WHIRLING DREAMS OF ABERRANT BLOOD where girls have their blood used to animate machines. I also liked ST JEAN AND THE DRAGON by Brenda Carre, a steampunk reverse-role version of Sherlock Holmes and Watson with a Jinn in the Watson role and a headstrong demon-hunting sleuth named Jane who needs to discover the real dark secret buried in a hoarder's house. I adored Kelly Cairo's MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND. Steampunk meets Clash of the Titans. It has a really fun ending that was totally 'awww'. Recommended.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent steampunk and gaslight fantasy By Steve R A wonderful collection of stories that appear to best fall into the steampunk and gaslight fantasy categories. Some of my favorites were Angela Penrose's clever crime story "Rites of Zosimos," Sharon Joss's mouth-watering "Order of the Golden Grapefruit," and Brenda Carre's artful "St. Jean & The Dragon" which simply has to be read to appreciate her use of language. All were enjoyable however, and by singling those stories out I am expressing only my personal preference.I'm a fan of steampunk and gaslight fantasy, so this was right up my alley. If you are too, check them out. Some of the stories are starting to appear as stand alones, so this anthology represents a good value.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gear Heart, Chocolate Alive, Souls Amuk, Women in Charge, Ghosts & Dragon! By Kitchen Queen Excellent read! Not your average stories with Victorian/Steampunk sensibilities that are a creative joy to read and leave you in a happy state. Action and surprise twists too. "Heavens Flight, St. Jean & The Dragon, and Myrtles Boxes", I hope become the foundation for future novels.Don't miss this issue!

As a fourth grade teacher, I see student pieces that are of a higher quality. There are MANY spelling, grammatical, and word usage errors. There are changes to font style and size within paragraphs. Passages are repeated word for word several pages later. Sentences are stopped prior to being complete. Some passages seem copied and pasted from other sources. The sequence of the book is disjointed, with random sexual scenes thrown in that do not fit or add to the storyline. Hopefully the author did not pay an editor to check for errors. It is a shame that something with such low quality could actually cost money. The one saving character is the cover of the book, which falsely promises an interesting read.

Keeps one focused.Because I know how you speak and the sound of your voice..every word comes through as though you are reading it to me. Interesting.I have finished the section on Lionel's death. You have had a difficult life.Must get back to "The Read"!!Keep up the good work!!

Love sparks, ignites and grows into much more as lives are intertwined and transformed. I applaud the candor and honesty of the writing. The juxtaposed passions for life and livelihood make this book almost impossible to put down. Wether it be winter by the fire or summer by the sea, Boots and Pearls should be required reading.

Lovely, Dark, Deep: Stories, by Joyce Carol Oates

Review “Marvelous. Oates is a giant among us, as prolific as the worst of the writers who produce dreck and turn it into cash, but thoroughly wonderful and important.” (NPR Books)“Where Balzac wanted to give his readers Paris in its entirety, Joyce Carol Oates has dared to give her readers an entire country, our own… [A] collection as alive and as enlivening as any of the earlier volumes in Oates’s already distinguished body of work.” (NPR Books)“Oates, one of few writers who achieves excellence in both the novel and the short story, has more than two dozen story collections to her name and she continues to inject new, ambushing power into the form… Oates’ stories seethe and blaze.” (Booklist)“As unsympathetic as many of Oates’ mordant and quasi-anonymous characters may appear at first, en masse their fears and anxieties in the face of death and decline epitomize universal recognition of hard facts: We’re all in this together, and nobody gets out alive.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Here Oates is at her empathetic best.” (Boston Globe)“Oates, a master at work for five decades, is an American literary institution. Surely no collection of short stories, no matter how wonderful or terrible, could break her legacy now. The fact is that this is an excellent collection of short fiction in its own right.” (Bookreporter.com)As the interloping fiancée of “Patricide” says of her deceased lover, the Philip Roth-esque Roland Marks, ‘He knew women really well-you could say, the masochistic inner selves of women.’ We might well say the same of Oates, with the same complimentary awe.” (Publishers Weekly)“A master cartographer of inner landscapes, the prolific Oates returns with a virtuosic collection that moves fluently across a range of characters, settings, and moods. In these 13 stories, she opts for a looser, more expressionistic palette as she gazes grimly, gorgeously, into the crucible of mortality.” (O, the Oprah Magazine)“[Thirteen] stories, structured into four sections, have a range of subjects and points of view while at the same time probing the innate insecurity in the lives of ordinary people... For readers who are already familiar with Oates, this book will not disappoint.” (Kansas City Star)“Insightful, disturbing and mesmerizing in their lyrical precision, the stories in the book display Joyce Carol Oates’ astonishing ability to make visceral the fear, hurt and uncertainty that lurks at the edges of ordinary lives.” (Spartanburg Herald Journal)“With every new book… [Oates] proves anew that she is perhaps our greatest contemporary American writer.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)“The unity of Oates’ stories in this collection resides in their confrontation with aging and death, with the various ways life winds down and ends, and with the darker side of our human nature.” (Roanoke Times)

By Bookreporter The world of Joyce Carol Oates, as ever, is filled with ordinary, chronically unhappy and uncomfortably familiar people. In LOVELY, DARK, DEEP, a disparate array of short stories from a famously versatile writer, we are treated to subjects as diverse as a smartphone-addicted grandson taking his grandmother to chemotherapy, an academic preparing to inherit the estate of her famous aging father, and a new couple altered by their encounter with a vicious mastiff on a hike. Central to each story is an intimate human relationship in deep, revelatory instability. Upon finishing the collection, one is left with a sense of the profound uncertainty of human relationships.“Mastiff,” perhaps the most immediate of the stories, focuses on a not-so-young couple who are holding each other at arm’s length, at best, until they are attacked by the titular dog. The man leaps to the woman’s defense, becoming brutally mauled in the process. As a result, the woman impulsively refers to herself in the hospital as his fiancé. The uncomfortable nature of this story places trauma in a relationship, and questions whether trauma brings us closer together or farther apart. As ever, Oates lands in delightfully ambiguous territory. The title story, “Lovely, Dark, Deep,” which was published by Harper’s in November 2013, portrays an increasingly uncomfortable and unsettling visit by a graduate student at the Bread Loaf School of English, who appears to know much more about Robert Frost’s life than she at first seems to --- perhaps more than she should. The uncomfortable interview, in which the surly old poet harangues the young woman, brilliantly shifts in power, and the student begins to interrogate Frost in an exceedingly personal and hostile manner, excoriating him for buried evils in his family life.A particular joy in this collection is the obsessive, hysterical and unexpected “Betrayal,” a relatively short installment for this collection, about a boy from a privileged family who upon graduation (with honors, as mentioned multiple times) horrifies his family by taking an unpaid internship at the San Diego Zoo and becoming a vegetarian. The story unfolds from the manic perspective of the parents, who quite literally believe their son has turned into an animal. The narrative brilliance of the tale is such that I don’t wish to further spoil it for anyone who might wish to read it. On first read, it feels nearly out of place in this mostly somber collection; it is the only story that seems to dabble more than slightly in humor, indeed growing almost farcical at times. However, there is a deep melancholy underpinning the narrative instability of the story that makes it a fascinating read, and perhaps the finest piece in this collection.Oates, a master at work for five decades, is an American literary institution. Surely no collection of short stories, no matter how wonderful or terrible, could break her legacy now. The fact is that this is an excellent collection of short fiction in its own right. Its evocation of the uncanny and the disturbing within seemingly mundane personal relationships is reminiscent of the great short stories of Flannery O’Connor. The insecurities and instabilities that define the relationships in LOVELY, DARK, DEEP are as disturbing as they are fascinating.Reviewed by L. Whitney Richardson

I remember reading several of her collections back in the 70's and 80's. Because she is such a versatile writer, both in prolific output and genres, she seemed to have left stories about ordinary men and women, and the depths of their psyches, behind. Luckily for us she has returned, with what I believe may be her best short story collection yet. I was motivated to write this review because a very dismissive review of this book appeared in the New York Times Book Review. The writer, a man who had a collection of stories published, repeated the cliché that because Ms. Oates writes so much, everything she writes isn't necessarily top notch. He also dismissed the book because the protagonists were women! As if women are not equal human beings, whose inner most thoughts are not of universal interest. I hadn't read the book yet, so I didn't feel qualified to write a rejoinder. I assumed there would be a flood of letters in Ms. Oates' defense, but there were none. So now having read the book, I am here to say, that male reviewer got it totally wrong. The short story collection explores relationships, the deeper intricacies, that only a skilled writer like Oates could fathom. The book probes darkly and deep. I can guess why a male writer might flinch. She explores male domination in its more subtle forms and particularly in two stories, "Lovely, Dark, Deep" and "Patricide", both about narcissistic, full of themselves and their genius, famous male writers. "Lovely, Dark Deep" paints a very grim portrait of Robert Frost, as a mean, wily, egocentric genius, very different from the lofty poetry he produced. "Patricide" has a protagonist that looks a lot like Philip Roth, with the wives and children of Norman Mailer. His daughter is obsessed by him, and lives off the crumbs of his occasional recognition of her. Though these stories are from a woman's view, her gaze is usually on a man. And I could see where that gaze would be threatening to any chauvanistic male writer. I can also see why Ms. Oates, one of America's greatest short story writers, certainly on a par with Updike, Cheever, and O'Henry, would have some anger at the way she is received by the literary establishment. She is not treated with the same respect and admiration as her male counterparts. This book has incredible variety. There is a ghost story, and a fantasy story in which a young man prefers the simian world. But underneath all the stories runs a feminist chord out to cut into the phony surface of male/female equality. Brava to Ms. Oates. A great read which is in itself, lovely, dark and deep.

She has the uncanny ability to show the largeness, the richness, and the contingency of life by her brilliant talent for elucidating life's smallness. The depiction of subjectivity during social interaction (eg,the insecurity, the hubris) draws you into her stories, and makes them hard to put down. If you love this style of fiction, and are a fan of her work, don't miss my top recommendation of her books: A Widow's Story: A Memoir.

This book is fantastic because it contains such a wide variety of recipes with little clean-up needed after. It even includes desserts. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because the formatting needs to be fixed in some places, especially when viewing with the black background on Kindle. The text and recipes themselves are great.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fast & Easy Recipes for Everyone By M. Bear I was looking for some simple recipes I could make that doesn't require a lot of equipment. I was going to purchase a slow cooker, but then I came across this amazing book. Filled with easy-to-follow recipes using chicken, beef, pork, fish and it even includes a dessert section and vegetarian and vegan options. And I only need an oven and a sheet pan (things I already own). The recipes look mouth-watering, I can't wait to try them! I'll save my money from a slow cooker and use these sheet pan recipes instead. Thanks for the great idea!
