Hope Lies in Less is a darkly intimate collection of short stories that explore what it is to be human. The characters within these stories confront moments ... not huge moments, but small bits of time and individuality in which perspective is transformed. Themes include personal crisis, loneliness, existentialism, the nature of memory, time's passage, aging, depression, suicide, interpersonal relationships, parenting, marriage, loss, fear, and epiphany. Hope Lies in Less is about the meaning of life.

Review If you are a reader, and you aren't reading this book, can you even call yourself a reader?  I love this collection.  - Tressie NelsonHope Lies in Less is awesome. Almost as good a chocolate. Better than first-time sex. How's that for a review?  You need these words.  - When Mom Can from If I WriteHope Lies in Less is an epic piece of masterful writing. Those familiar with Kris will not be disappointed, and those unfamiliar with her works will be hooked. - Rodney Lacroix, comedic author of Things Go Wrong For Me, Perhaps I've Said Too Much, and Romantic as Hell

From the Author Hope Lies in Less chronicles the unfolding of moments that might, in the normal course of things, go unnoticed except in their passing ... Smoke takes flight. Linens are drenched in urine. Routes are traced red upon a map. Blue eggs shatter against the windshield. A girl does not fit in a dollhouse. Invisible ink writes farewell. A lock turns on a hinge-splintered door. Children appear in limbs. Upon the mundanity of everyday details, lives are laid bare and disassembled. This deeply intimate collection of stories explores the shadowed truths of the moments between moments. Within the tellings of threshold, these stories examine what it is to exist thoughtfully in this world ... what it is to be human ... what it takes to reconcile the darkness with the light and accept that in the end, we all stop casting shadows. Meaning exists, but so does absence. Hope lies in less.

About the Author Kris Wehrmeister is the long-time author of the blog Pretty All True, at which she offers a mixture of humor, memoir, and literary fiction. Hope Lies in Less, Kris' first published book, is a collection of fictional short stories. Dark and unflinching in tone, Hope Lies in Less explores nothing less than the meaning of the moments that make up lives. Kris is a used-to-be attorney, mother of two daughters, and wife to one man. She lives in Lake Oswego, Oregon, where she spends her time arguing with her daughters Maj and Kallan, who are brilliant and obstreperous. When her daughters are at school, Kris argues with the dogs, of which there are three - Jack the Terrier, Persie the Labrador, and Hazel the Weimaraner. Additionally, although no one would describe Kris as a "people-person," she occasionally meets with friends for beer or coffee accompanied by petty disagreements, of which she is fond. Kris knows all the lyrics to all the songs, and she sings along. Always. In her spare time, Kris writes.

By seamh As a longtime reader of Pretty All True, familiar with Kris' unique voice, I felt that the beauty of Hope Lies In Less lay somewhere between the words and the spaces between them. One of the themes connecting the disparate stories is that both events and emotions can be defined by their absence, a beautiful and haunting thought. While several of these stories could easily become novels on their own, each story is beautifully fleshed out and cohesive from beginning to end. I truly loved this collection, and while it tends toward the dark and intense, I do not believe that should scare anyone away. Read this book. Be changed by it.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A Strong Collection From a Powerful Voice By Sebastian Malloy Kris Wehrmeister uses words like a magician, casting spells and charms, and drawing the reader in with a power of storytelling that refuses to let go, even long after the last page has been turned. Her stories draw maps from the head to the heart and back again, and leave you wanting to further travel the roads of her explorations. A must-buy collection.

You are never left unmoved. Never. Kris draws you in, with or against your will. She has the power. Her eye for detail and ear for dialogue are damaged and unique. Sometimes she says so much with so little that your heart is in your mouth, or it falls to the ground. Several times, this collection of short stories made me feel like I did 30-plus years ago when I was a reporter in Waco, covering a triple murder. That's not because she writes about murder or death. It's because of what you see and hear and FEEL after reading her words, after absorbing their nuance. You taste the blood and bile and worry even if you can't exactly make out what's out there in the darkness. Kris' words can leave you speechless. But, here's the thing, they never leave you. She has that power.
