By Kindle Customer If you love mountains, mountain climbing, landscape photography, Japanese geography, or photography in general, you will definitely enjoy this book. The author/photographers begin their series by describing their undertaking, to climb Japan's famous mountains, and then begin with Mt. Daisetsu. The scenery is almost too astonishing to be believed and is both thoroughly and beautifully photographed. The text is relatively brief, mostly describing the context for the pictures. It does not cover climbing techniques or any technical issues, beyond a few comments about the difficulty or ease of various parts of the climb. There are a few tiny grammar errors but small enough that they'd probably only catch the eye of copy editors or English professors, certainly not enough to interfere with anybody's understanding or enjoyment.Overall, beautifully done.

Be my Valentine, Blueberry Springs. Three short stories of sweet, clean romance from the Blueberry Springs series. Love triangles, forbidden kisses, and a question that will change the future of one of the town’s favorite couples. This set includes the latest standalone short story romances from New York Times bestselling author Jean Oram. Story 1: Tequila and Candy Hearts One new job. One chance to prove herself. And one crush on the man she most definitely shouldn’t. Nicola Samuels has spent the past two years traveling the world with her best friend Todd Haber and is ready to settle down with her first real career as Blueberry Springs’s community planner. Eager to make her mark on the small town, she creates the first annual Valentine’s Day Love Extravaganza. Thinking she is immune to the holiday, she hires a man dressed as Cupid, not expecting to fall under the spell of the holiday… But when Cupid strikes, will she kiss the man she shouldn’t—or will she hide her true feelings in order to prevent ruining the one thing she can’t risk losing? Story 2: Vodka and Chocolate Hearts One happy couple. One friend with a not-so-secret crush. One Valentine’s Day that could change it all. Months ago, Amber Thompson returned to her hometown of Blueberry Springs with hunky newscaster Russell Peaks on her arm. But lately her boyfriend has been spending more and more time in the city as well as talking about moving back. No problem; Amber can work as a mail-order database lackey anywhere there’s internet—as long as Russell asks her to come along. When the town’s first Valentine’s Day Love Extravaganza gets underway, Amber’s boyfriend gets held up in the city, causing her best friend Scott Malone to pick up his slack. Will Scott’s good intentions be noticed for what they truly are and create a Blueberry Springs love triangle, or will Russell find a way to redeem himself in time to reclaim his girlfriend? Story 3: Whiskey and Gumdrop Hearts One woman. One man. One question. Award-winning baker Mandy Mattson is tired of feeling as though she’s always leaning on her boyfriend Frankie Smith to make her dreams come true. Struggling to expand her new restaurant in hopes of becoming more financially secure, she doesn’t know what to do when her boyfriend asks for the one thing she doesn’t have— more time to spend with him. When Frankie runs out of patience, Mandy finds herself having to choose between two dreams. Will she make the right choice? Or will she find a way to have her cake and eat it too?

Sweet Treats: A Blueberry Springs Valentine's Day Short Story Romance Boxed Set (Volume 4), by Jean Oram

About the Author Jean Oram grew up in a small town in Alberta, Canada and her experiences have inspired her Blueberry Springs series. But while Jean grew up in an old schoolhouse tending to the family's honeybee operation, her characters haven't! Well, not yet, anyway. Her latest series, the Summer Sisters, was inspired by her summers spent in the Canadian Muskokas where she would visit her grandmother in her century-old cottage. But while Jean's characters fall in love with movie stars and millionaires, Jean found her husband in the Canadian far north. And he's not a millionaire. Yet. (There's still time.) Jean loves to ski (downhill and cross-country), hike, camp, read, write, watch romantic comedies, and say random things like "Buckle your seatbelts, kids, Mama's driving!" in order to make her kids crack up. Jean is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author and lives in Canada with her husband, two kids, very large dog who sheds like she's trying to clone herself, her cute cat that's been nicknamed Nermil, as well as tons of nature. We are introduced to new characters and revisit old ones. It is recommended to read these three in order. Each build upon the previous one. They are easily read in one sitting. I enjoyed visiting Blueberry Springs and seeing what is happening with the residents.Looking forward to the next Blueberry Springs visit!

Prequel - Tequila & Candy Hearts, story of Nicola & Todd - The rest of the story is coming soon, entitled Tequila & Candy Drops. Prequel - Vodka & Chocolate Hearts, prequel for Vodka & Chocolate Drops - Amber & Scott's story. And sequel Whiskey & Gumdrop Hearts for the original Whiskey and Gumdrops, Mandy & Frankie's story 1 year later. They can be read alone but you will be left hanging if you read the 2 prequel stories. Mandy and Frankie's sequel to Whiskey and Gumdrops can be read alone but it can be found for free if you look for it.They are cute, clean love stories about a very small, close-knit town, Blueberry Springs. The ones that I've read so far are all love stories that include a couple that have been friends for many years, have a great relationship but, in most cases, the woman is afraid to take a chance on romance that might ruin a friendship they can't emotionally afford to lose. Very sweet stories. The Blueberry Springs Series [STANDALONE NOVELS]--sweet, clean romances:Whiskey and Gumdrops (Book 1) Mandy & FrankieRum and Raindrops (Book 2) Jen & RobEggnog and Candy Canes (Book 3) Katie & NashSweet Treats (Book 4) - This set: Tequila & Candy Hearts (Nicola & Todd - prequel), Vodka & Chocolate Hearts (Amber & Scott- prequel), Whiskey & Gumdrop Hearts (Mandy & Frankie - sequel, 1 year later)Vodka and Chocolate Drops (Book 5) Amber & ScottCompanion novel: Champagne and Lemon Drops - Beth & Oz

You can read them as stand alone novellas but why when you can start the for free with Champagne and LemonDrops. You do have two of these with cliffhangers and one at is a continuation from book two of the series but worth getting. There wholesome Valentines stories. I can't for the full novels to come out the pick up where the novellas leave off.

But Hey that's whats not only sexy about this story but intriguing. I found myself clearly on one side of this story rooting for .. well I will let you guess. But I am sure if you like these types of reads you will be in my boat. Doesn't bore you with drawn out emptiness but keeps it nicely turning and reeling you to the next page. You will enjoy it enough to recommend it like me! Now give me some NYX! Wait Callisto might get in a cat fight with her! Lol.

I don't read a lot of romance, but I found the romantic backstory of the greek gods to be very engaging -- I was pleasantly surprised, and it looks like I am a fan after all! Well written, good pace, and just dark enough to be engaging without being disturbing. I will look forward to the next one in the series!

The history of the evolution of life, incomplete as it yet is, already reveals to us how the intellect has been formed, by an uninterrupted progress, along a line which ascends through the vertebrate series up to man. It shows us in the faculty of understanding an appendage of the faculty of acting, a more and more precise, more and more complex and supple adaptation of the consciousness of living beings to the conditions of existence that are made for them.

Review

'Palgrave Macmillan is to be congratulated for reissuing these classic Bergson texts. This is a timely decision since Bergson was the great thinker of life and it seems, nearly one hundred years later, that we find ourselves once again required to conceive life. Keith Ansell Pearson and John Mullarkey have been at the forefront of the new conception of life, therefore no better editors for these volumes could be selected.' - Professor Leonard Lawlor, Department of Philosophy, University of Memphis, USA

'Long absent from the center of discussion in Western philosophy, Bergson has recently made a reappearance. The Centennial Series of his works undertaken by Palgrave Macmillan thus comes at an opportune time, making it possible for those interested in Bergson's ideas t have access to newly annotated versions of several of his chief writings, freshly introduced and discussed. It is particularly good to see the republication of Mind-Energy, a treasure trove of Bergsonian insights long out of print.' - Professor Pete A.Y. Gunter, Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, University of North Texas, USA

Language Notes Text: English (translation) Original Language: French

From the Back Cover Anticipating not only modern scientific theories of psychology but also those of cosmology, this astonishing book sets out a impressive goal for itself: to reconcile human biology with a theory of consciousness. First published in France in 1907, and translated into English in 1911, this work of wonder was esteemed at the time in scientific circles and in the popular culture alike for its profound explorations of perception and memory and its surprising conclusions about the nature and value of art.

Contending that intuition is deeper than intellect and that the real consequence of evolution is a mental freedom to grow, to change, to seek and create novelty, Bergson reinvigorated the theory of evolution by refusing to see it as merely mechanistic. His expansion on Darwin remains one of the most original and important philosophical arguments for a scientific inquiry still under fire today.

Recommended for fans of Rupert Sheldrake's theories By Gregory Olsen Bergson's thesis is that Darwinian and Lamarkian evolution are only half the story and that there is a creative urge inherent in life that defines the direction of evolution. It is distinguished from Creationism in that his system does not posit and eschaton or final perfect form, nor an external agent (God). It has some similarity with biologist Rupert Sheldrake's theory of morphic fields. In his theory, there is an energy field (as yet undetected by modern physics) that controls the shape of organic molecules, i.e., one protein is shaped one way and the same collection of atoms gets shaped another way under the same pH and temperature.Aldous Huxley mentions Bergson's theory of consciousness several times in his writings. Bergson thinks that consciousness pervades everything, and that intellect serves as a filter that presents only what is comprehensible to mental categories. This has several implications. One is the possibility for a monistic metaphysic. The other is that it leaves open the possibility of perceiving an alternate reality (what excited Huxley).Chapter 3 is about his metaphysics, which are not very clearly expressed. There appear to be avenues unexplored by him. What are the consequences of matter being infused with consciousness? Magic? Why is it that intellect and geometrical thinking is what produces objects in perception? What is the mechanism. What does have value is his theory that chaos is not the absence of repeatability, but is a stochastic process that can be understood as an aggregate of individual "wills." This is used to support his vital theory of evolution. That each organism "wills" its variation in seemingly random fashion, but at a higher order, it produces the regularity of genera.Chapter 4 is a critique of various philosophic systems after establishing his "cinematographic" theory of perception. His basic point is that matter is in continual flux, yet we are only able to perceive it as a sequence of discrete states, hence the illusion of permanence.

Professor Bergson Begins Modern Science and Intuits Quantum Physics' Improbable Secrets By Richard Lee Fulgham This book must be read slowly and deliberately -- do so and it will give you an insight into the brilliance of one of the most revolutionary and extraordinarily perceptive philosopher scientists of the 20th Century, IMO.Bergson changed the way scientists see the world by introducing his conception of an "original impetus", which began simply (if "intelligently") and evolved matter into living, increasingly complex lifeforms and concurrently evolved an increasingly complex consciousness within it -- as an "imperceptable thread" (my wording) ultimately called the elan vital. In my case, after reading carefully and filling the book's margins with notes, Professor Bergson seems to be proving (showing) that all science up until his time (circa 1930's) was concerned with objects as they were at a particular moments, whereas in fact these objects were and are in a state of continual "being" (duration), making their actuality or essence unknowable. He chronologically takes us through the writings of Plato and Aristotle (the natural trend of the intellect)-- Descartes, Spinoza and Leibniz (becoming in modern science) -- and even through the Criticism of Kant and the evolutionism of Spencer. Bergson thoroughly critques each philosophy and shows us why they are not dealing the world as it really is.Through this he weaves his own philosophical system based on Creation and Evolution by (quote):". . . showing us in the intellect a local effect of evolution, a flame, perhaps accidental, which lights up the coming and going of living beings in the narrow passage open to their action: an lo! . . . (making) of this lantern glimmering in a tunnel a Sun which can illuminate the world."Boldly (Kantian and Spencerian science) proceeds with the powers of conceptual thought alone, to the ideal reconstruction of things, even of life. . . . But the essence of things escapes us, and will escape us always; WE MOVE AMONG RELATIONS; THE ABSOLUTE IS NOT IN OUR PROVINCE; WE ARE BROUGHT TO STAND BEFORE THE UNKNOWABLE." . . . BUT AN INTELLECT BENT UPON THE ACT TO BE PERFOMED AND THE REACTION TO FOLLOW . . . WOULD DIG TO THE VERY ROOT OF NATURE AND MIND."In simpler words, the observation of any object changes reality for that object. It is only real as a moving "being", animated by an original impetus and kept real by an "elan vital" which cannot be known because "being" cannot be defined. What we call "real things" are illusions which beomce "real" to us only when we stop their duration. Heidegger spends thousands of pages unsuccessfully trying to define "being", which ultimately he can only label as "dasein". What we observe as the real world is matter and consciousness evolving concurrently from simple to complex as they move through space and time. This means that the original impetus, the spark, the first flame, began neither in space nor time. Later quantum physics would support Bergson's insight, considering that an electron (as one example) cannot be seen without turning it into something else, or ever stranger, disappearing into what can only be other universes parallel to our own.IMO, this means a creative force must exist that animates matter and consciousness; and that could only have originated in that Singularity outside time and space which I in my particular need call the thought of "God". You can call "it" what you will: the Tao, Bhudda, Nature, et al.In my possession is a 1932 edition of "Creative Evolution" which had lingered on a library shelf over eighty years but had been checked out only three times after 1970. Sometimes I wonder where are my fellow philosophers and why I seem in my pained isolation to be the last of the 20th Century philosophers of mind. But that is because I am a crazed crackpot in the collective mind of those who measure men by their wealth. My contemporaries are in the universities, religious orders and lecture tours, where they belong. Yet even I am animated by the elan vital. Even I am part of the "God" finally perceived by Henri Bergson."Creative Evolution" was a sensation when it first appeared in 1932, the work of an already distinguished Professor Bergson of the College de France. It gave the world at last a new and scientific conception of the God long intuited by prophets, priests, poets, writers and grizzled, scarred, aging gray bearded philosophers like myself, dumb beasts of intellectual burdens, who desperately need a new physics to help us embrace an unknowable God created out of a Singularity and connecting our minds and bodies to what the Apostle Paul called Love.Richard Lee Fulgham, Bel Air, 2009

64 of 76 people found the following review helpful. the light shining between Heraclitus and Bohm By Frank Bierbrauer Henri Bergson's seminal ``Creative Evolution'' starts off with the flowing movement so prevalent in his philosophy of the organism, one idea flows into the next in a smooth undivided motion. Not only does Bergson explain his work with analogies and examples supported by the biology of the time, thereby distancing himself from the purely intellectual pursuit of most philosohpy, trapped in the world of the mind, but he demonstrates his thought in the very way of exposition he uses throughout the book. One feels his thought is produced like a Mozart symphony, all at once with no corrections needed. This aptly demonstrates the idea of duration and time he proposes in this book. His influence is profound in thinkers such as David Bohm and Alfred North Whitehead which so to speak ``run with it'' in the parlance of baseball. This is a book worth reading twice for its rich display of creativity and also to reread sections not followed the first time. One does feel however that at times the flow is interrupted by disturbances in his mode of thinking leading to disjointed reading. Nonetheless, not only does he open a whole new way of thought free of dualism and the old patterns of mechanism, but he also expalins the reason for mechanistic thought itself.

Life marches on and change is inevitable. This is brought home through the central characters. Two generations of strong women. One is looking back fondly at her life and the events that led her to where she is. The other is learning about herself and falling in love. The concept of the story is breathtaking. Change is the one constant in life and that is the point I took away from this story.

This was a really touching short story! Two souls met 50 years ago, but drifted apart. Surprisingly, both come back to the same location to relive their happy memories, not knowing the other is there. Add in their grandkids and some more romance and we have a story that I look forward to reading over and over again! I really enjoyed seeing this truly sweet story unfold! Wonderful read!

"Dora Charles is the real deal, and hers may be the most honest - and personal - southern cookbook I've ever read." - John Martin Taylor In her first cookbook, a revered former cook at Savannah's most renowned restaurant divulges her locally famous Savannah recipes—many of them never written down before—and those of her family and friends Hundreds of thousands of people have made a trip to dine on the exceptional food cooked by Dora Charles at Savannah's most famous restaurant. Now, the woman who was barraged by editors and agents to tell her story invites us into her home to taste the food she loves best.  These are the intensely satisfying dishes at the heart of Dora's beloved Savannah: Shrimp and Rice; Simple Smoky Okra; Buttermilk Cornbread from her grandmother; and of course, a truly incomparable Fried Chicken. Each dish has a "secret ingredient" for a burst of flavor: mayonnaise in the biscuits; Savannah Seasoning in her Gone to Glory Potato Salad; sugar-glazed bacon in her deviled eggs. All the cornerstones of the Southern table are here, from Out-of-This-World Smothered Catfish to desserts like a jaw-dropping Very Red Velvet Cake.  With moving dignity, Dora describes her motherless upbringing in Savannah, the hard life of her family, whose memories stretched back to slave times, learning to cook at age six, and the years she worked at the restaurant. “Talking About” boxes impart Dora’s cooking wisdom, and evocative photos of Savannah and the Low Country set the scene.

A Real Southern Cook: In Her Savannah Kitchen, by Dora Charles

Review "Dora Charles's take on classic Southern recipes is approachable and creative, and her moment in the spotlight is long overdue."--Eater.com "The book is itself a tribute to a woman who never imagined she would have to practice signing her name for fans... Some recipes...like crab cakes, poundcakes, and jambalaya, are the best of scratch cooking... Ms. Charles is a meticulous and methodical cook...[she] is also an astute interpreter of culture... [She] stresses the importance of selecting good raw ingredietns and building flavor at every step, like saving what she called fry-meat-grease from bacon, sausage, or pork chops to rub on sweet potatoes as they bake or to eliven rice and greens..."--The New York Times "Even just reading the names of recipes in Savannah chef Dora Charles' debut cookbook is making us wild with hunger – Buttermilk cornbread? Fried chicken? Very red velvet cake? We're not sure we can wait until September."—People.com "A Real Southern Cook is a beautiful read, a vital illustration of Southern foodways, and an important addition to the canon of great American cookbooks." - Matt Lee and Ted Lee, authors of The Lee Bros. Charleston Kitchen "Dora Charles is the real deal, and hers may be the most honest — and personal — Southern cookbook I've read." - John Taylor, author of Hoppin' John's Lowcountry Cooking and owner of HoppinJohns.com"After soaking in pages of fried spareribs, red rice, and coconut cake, I just wanted to be at Dora’s house when supper was served.” — Vivian Howard, chef and owner, Chef & the Farmer and creator of the PBS documentaryA Chef’s Life  “Dora Charles and her family recipes are legendary in Savannah, and finally she has written them down for the rest of us.” — Nathalie Dupree, author and television personality “Dora Charles is unabashedly honest about the scarred beauty that is Southern food. It is time to make some Tomato Pie and some Hushpuppies, because within those recipes are the stories of family and place.” —Hugh Acheson, chef and author "People like Dora and the food she cooks are what I love about the South — real people, honest cooking. Two thumbs up!" –Eddie Hernandez , executive chef of Taqueria del Sol restaurants

I am world travelled and simply love food - a true foodie. I have hundreds of cookbooks. But during the holidays I find myself in mourning. I've lost so many in my family - my mother, my grandmothers, aunts, and uncles. I am realizing that my generation has made a grievous error in letting the old ones go to their graves without learning the traditions. In today's society we praise the new and criticize the past. But past is not just prologue, it is history, it is tradition. On my mother's side (the side that hosted the holiday dinners) the people are from the South. The family settled in Cleveland, OH, by way of Florida, by way of Alabama (which they left because the Klan was after one of my great Uncles). As a child, during the holidays, I travelled to the Midwest to eat food that was decidedly Southern. It was delicious. But that isn't the whole story. Nowadays when people speak of Southern food or Soul food, they do so with a grimace, labeling it as unhealthy, the cause of diabetes, etc. Ironically, most of MY old ones, born and raised on this food, lived into their 90's. But in many ways this unhealthy designation is just another form of cultural denigration, while at the same time, every chef on the Food Network is incorporating those foods and methods into their own, so called gourmet cooking. Therefore, because society dismissed the old southern cooking as "not good enough", many who were raised with this kind of cooking chose not to preserve the memory of it, and, tragically, the memories of those who prepared it. This is a grievous mistake and I thank Dora for helping me just a little on my course correction. This book is beautiful and actually made me cry. It is exactly how I remember my family cooking. The recipes look amazing. I'll update my review when I have tried some, but I know that they are good because they are EXACTLY as ours were prepared. A couple are identical to the few I was able to snag for posterity. Her spirit and approach are the real thing. Not some chef TRYING to cook Southern, but a Southern cook trying to put into words what comes naturally to her. And those words are amazing. This book is well written and tells a story that needs to be told in the way it should be told. One last thing, please try to come off the high horse that I've seen so many on when reviewing this cookbook. For instance reviewers have scoffed at her use of Accent, Lawry's, Biscquick, margarine, etc. She labels Accent as "optional" - it's only recently that we have discarded this chemical for health reasons. People cooked with it for many years to enhance flavor. Lawry's is simply a mix of seasoning - the proportions of which have been copywrited and sold. Biscquick is simply a stabilzed baking mix. You could make it fresh if you want to, but many poor and busy people found it easier to buy it premade. Margarine, which I never touch, was put out as a HEALTHY alternative to butter a few decades back and an entire generation grew up using it as their butter and are accustomed to the flavor. I say this so that people see that many of these processed additives WERE a part of the organic evolution of black southern cooking. However if you read closely in the book, she sticks mostly to scratch. Finally, she talks about fry grease and people run for the hills. However if you'll stand still for a moment, all fry grease is is the grease that has been infused by the meat that was cooking in it. It is used as a flavoring IN LIEU of an unflavored oil. Ie: 2 tblsp of rendered bacon fat instead of 2 tblsp of olive oil. Not more fat, more flavor. At any rate, my point is not to convince anybody to eat Southern food. My point is that if Southern food was at all a part of your heritage, this book is for you. It is history as told by the cook. It is love through food. I might buy another copy just to give her the sale.

I have never felt like I was meeting an old friend for the first time. After reading her warm story of determination and love of cooking I immediately fell in love. Not only do we have this woman's story. We have her food. Food not only permeated with love but with deliberate seasoning and honed craft.Of the beautiful photographs the one MOST beautiful was that of her family. And what a lucky family they are. They are the first hand recipients of "Gone-to-Glory Potato Salad", 'Oven Baked Savannah Red Rice", and "Surprise Peach Cobbler".The peach cobbler was the first recipe I made. Dora's instructions are very clear even though she is an "intuitive" cook and doesn't write anything down. The cobbler was easy to put together, perfectly spiced and put me in mind of my grandmother from Natchez, MS. If I was a peach, this is how I'd want to end up. Very silky, buttery and ultimately special. Like my grandmother.I DEARLY hope we have MANY more books from Dora. I have learned much of what I cook and how I cook from Ina Garten...but Dora has my heart and my gratitude. Good luck, Ms. Charles. I wish you all the success in the world!!! You surely deserve it.

Dora Charles comes from a family that has produced great cooks for many generations, from the days of slavery, and she shares stories that give the recipes historical and social context and meaning. She began learning to cook from her grandmother when she was six years old, the same age that her grandmother herself had taken a job as a cook's assistant and began learning to cook.In this book, Ms. Charles passes her knowledge on to to the reader, just as her relatives and friends taught her and generations of cooks before her. The beautiful photographs of the author and her family, of the Savannah, Georgia area, and of course of the wonderful food she cooks, help bring it all to life. Even the organization of the book into chapters helps tell her story. Her anecdotes may bring a tear to the eye on occasion, but they are consistently full of joy, and that smile on her face is genuine. I had to chuckle when I read that she doesn't think that she has ever seen leftover deviled eggs, because it made me think about it, and I haven't ever seen any, either. Her confession of using Squeeze Parkay as a secret weapon to finish off a dish that needs a little something made me both laugh and cry a little, because that was something I often saw my grandmother do on the sly. This book is comforting. The recipes are mostly for traditional Southern country dishes, including some particular to the Lowcountry, and so there are readers who will recognize the details of the methods of preparation and seasoning. However, many of these recipes are rarely found in writing, even in the fundraising cookbooks published by churches and clubs, and I have never seen them so well-presented and accompanied by such good advice. It really seems as if you are right there in the kitchen with her watching over your shoulder, ready with a helpful tip just when it is needed. There are also many of her own recipes, such as quick grits cooked for an hour and a half, as well as a few recipes for more modern dishes, but they all draw on the same culinary tradition and expertise and use of all the senses in making satisfying food. The author has had many decades of experience cooking professionally, and perhaps a book of her large-scale recipes for the professional chef will be forthcoming. I would also like to read her advice on making sweet tea!
