Free PDF Ebook Hypothetical Thinking: Dual Processes in Reasoning and Judgement (Essays in Cognitive Psychology), by Jonathan St. B. T. Evans

Hypothetical thought involves the imagination of possibilities and the exploration of their consequences by a process of mental simulation. Using a recently developed theoretical framework called Hypothetical Thinking Theory, Jonathan St. B. T. Evans provides an integrated theoretical account of a wide range of psychological studies on hypothesis testing, reasoning, judgement and decision making.

Hypothetical thinking theory is built on three key principles, implemented in a revised and updated version of Evans' well-known heuristic–analytic theory of reasoning. The central claim of this book is that this theory can provide an integrated account of some apparently very diverse phenomena including confirmation bias in hypothesis testing, acceptance of fallacies in deductive reasoning, belief biases in reasoning and judgement, biases of statistical judgement and a number of characteristic findings in the study of decision making. The author also provides broad ranging discussion of cognitive biases, human rationality and dual-process theories of higher cognition.

Hypothetical Thinking draws on and develops arguments first proposed in Evans’ earlier work from this series, Bias in Human Reasoning. In the new theory, however, cognitive biases are attributed equally to analytic and heuristic processing and a much wider range of phenomena are reviewed and discussed. It will therefore be of great interest to researchers and post-graduates in psychology and the cognitive sciences, as well as to undergraduate students looking for a comprehensive review of current work on reasoning and decision-making.

Exemplar of bias against the value of System 1 processing By T Crichton Unfortunately, 'Hypothetical Thinking' serves to further devalue the long-ignored, and crucial role, of abstract-associative processes in human thought, and reasoning. Evans main motivation with this work, is to suggest that major relevance of 'system 2' processing in hypothetical thinking. Though he is carefully manipulative in his presentations, a bit of analysis reveals that his argument falls short of 'rational'. Evan's strategy is to discuss what he calls 'hypothetical thinking' in a context which is consistent with his arbitrary 'mental model making', thereby tautologically limiting the notion of 'hypothetical thinking' to the STM/Working memory complex (which is essentially what he implies to be 'System 2'). With his version of 'hypothetical thinking' established, Evans can avoid the contribution of associative-heuristic processes towards 'hypothetical thinking' , as it relates to the generation of hypotheticals, in describing (even partially) associative-based phenomena. For example, in proposing some general and 'probable' explanation to DOG --> 9 LIVES. Which, in this case, under the general form, A ---> B can result in the suggestion of the hypothetical A ---> Superstitious quality(Probabilistic Opposite (A)). Evans, essentially avoids the indisputably ubiquitous role of idea generation (system 1 process), in the design of hypotheticals. Of course, System 2 will ultimately be involved in the design of all hypotheticals (in some almost exclusively), it almost literally, can't think outside of it's own box. Certainly, any reasonable person can see, that there are more 'ifs' that can be generated via the assistance of long-term-memory (System 1), than can be generated through our limited working memory system (System 2), alone. And while logic certainly, has a role in hypothetical thought, I'm sorry to report that this book is another attempt to confine human ingenuity to purely logical (or perhaps pseudo-logical) STM/Working complex, and it is disrespecting to both the hypothetical and creative processes. There is a good reason that associative memory correlates (which Evans tends to imply, do not) highly with general intelligence. Maybe "IF" Evan's had a premise that wasn't as partial, his position would be plausible.Of course, dual process models are all highly arbitrary constructs, but if one must bear to stand dual process, I would look into other accounts.

By osnat faliks I really enjoyed this book, particularly the short stories "New York City Marathon", "Liquid Calling", and "Black Eye Susan." I had been following Devon's website, [...] the past year, where he blogs about his ambitious goal of writing a short story every two weeks for an entire year. Not only did I enjoy the stories, but found the blog about his experiences to be funny and witty. I could relate to many of his stories, being from the NY/NJ area, and would highly recommend this book. It's a refreshing read with well-drawn characters and interesting dialogue. Hope to see more from this author.

There is a wonderful inner layer to these stories that seems to shine through a tasteful glass of good whiskey, keen observation and sardonic laughter. The boys are on a night out while the girls play with soured experiences. This is a great read for the New Yorker who knows the sounds of late night side streets and the silences of apartment living. Wishing it was not so, wishing that it was so within a new existential stance not far from the deep river waters on both sides of Manhattan Island. Don't skip any of the stories they hold together and leave you with a feeling of having sat on the stoop all night. Enjoy the passing view.

Snyder's books and I have always been able to make a connection with her characters. However, this book turned me into an emotional mess! Out of all her books, this is the one that I can relate to the most. Their struggles were real and once you read the book, I am sure you will completely understand what I mean. I felt like I was ready a story written about my life, which is why I felt so connected to the characters in this story. Tristan and Chelbys story had me at the edge of my seat the whole time! I would HIGHLY recommend this book for everyone to read. T.h. Snyder, you once again turned me into a HOT mess reading a book of yours! Thank you for your hard work and allowing me to enjoy yet another one of your amazing books!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I love Tristan! By Melonie I have yet to read one book from t.h. snyder that I have not loved, and this one is no different. Finding Us might just be her best book yet. I felt an immediate connection with Tristan and Chelby. My heart broke for these two. I wanted to just jump in the book and let them know everything would be ok. I was an emotional mess ( Big fat tears included) while reading Chelby's struggles. I relate to her struggles and I am sure a lot of others can also. It's one heck of a ride with these two. I love that Chelby is so imperfect. It is one of the things that makes her so real. What can I say about Tristan besides I want one! He is definite book boyfriend material and you will fall in love with him. I know I did! t.h. snyder has an amazing ability with her writing to make you feel like you are inside the characters heads and going through everything they are feeling right alone with them. I can't even put into the words the emotions I felt while reading this book. I would highly recommend this book to everyone!

This book talked about struggles, anxiety, depression but TH Snyder told it beautifully. Started reading it and couldn't put it down. I love how the author tells this story and can't wait to read the next book.

Powerful, radiant stories by an accomplished author By Laura Stanfill The twelve stories in Baby’s on Fire are radiant, infused with her signature blend of clarity, humor, and intimacy. Her characters spark and crack against each other, many of them rattled by unexpected change, wanting to find their way back to the things they used to have, and often the wanting proves transformative.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Short Story Collection with Real Depth By Wendy J. Fox Though this is Prato's debut collection, it is clear she has been long practicing her craft. In these 12 stories, homes are lost, relationships bust up, people fight, get sick, love and run off, yet through all of the turmoil, Prato's prose is steady and clear. In the title story, the main character's brother Spencer's side of the hotel room they are sharing after their family home is burned to the ground "is immaculate with his new poverty." On the road to Guatemala from Belize, the men are wearing "faded jeans and white t-shirts. They mush have known that white cotton against their brown skin made them look like gods."At 126 pages it's a short book of sometimes very short stories, but "Baby's on Fire" still manages to hold as much as a weighty novel.

I ended up in tears. More than once I caught myself admiring the writing - it's vivid and truly everything I read for, well developed characters grappling with themes of loneliness, family, and relationships. I am looking forward to this author's next book.
