It's short enough that you can read it in a day by the pool, or at the beach, or hell, in the backyard while your kids play and you pretend you're not really there. It is well written and I Really enjoyed the timeline and placement of the chapters. The prologue sets the tone and the final chapter offers a new perspective that leaves you looking back at the whole of the story with new feelings.Kate is coming out of a years long relationship, that, if she's being honest, has been over for some time. Her real focus now is getting out of their shares apartment and starting over. When her coworker suggests that she look to help in their IT guys she balks. She's never seen Henry that way before. However, once the idea is planted she can't seem to get Henry out of her mind.Henry has had an eye on Kate for awhile. He wastes no time offering to give her a tour of the neighborhood she's looking into, his neighborhood. As they get to know each other and develop a friendship, Kate realizes there's much more to Henry than she assumed.Moving day arrives and Kate is happily looking forward to a new beginning. Little does she know her moving buddy, Henry, has a new beginning of his own in mind. Will sweaty moving in July turn into a hot night for Kate and Henry? Take a trip to Love Lane and find out! This novella is engaging and fun with just the right amount of sexy thrown in. With a very realistic feel to it, you'll feel as though you you just saw a friend through a tough time, rather than feeling like you finished a book. I'm hoping for more of Kate and Henry and will definitely be looking forward to more from this emerging author.

Short, yet satisfying read By Sheila73 This was a great short story perfect for when you want something quick and still a satisfying read without a cliffhanger.Kate has just ended a long term relationship with a man who she lives with but they just aren't meant to be together. The entire relationship was based off of and continued to be based on an extreme physical and sexual attraction. The both realize they want more for themselves and the break up is amicable. She's still living in his place until she can get out on her own.Her friend at work keeps trying to get her to notice a guy named Henry who also works there. Kate has never paid him much attention before but decides she could at least use a friend. The more time she spends with Henry the more she sees about him and can't believe she never paid attention to him before. My favorite part is how at the beginning she doesn't seem to find him too physically attractive. As she gets to know him more and they grow closer, his looks in her perception improve. It's proof to all of us that beauty is only skin deep. Outward appearances can change in the eye of the beholder depending on their views of the person on the inside. Henry and Kate's relationship started as mere work acquaintances but grew into an intimately close friendship that led to a beautiful emotionally/physically potent romantic partnership. The last part of the book is told from Henry's point of view and it tells his story from the first time he ever laid eyes on Kate. We learn so much more about Henry from this segment and it's a vital part of the story. For such a short story it is powerful and will stay with you long after you finish.

The first book in the Love Lane Series proves to be one to keep up with.We meet Kate, who is down on her luck after her boyfriend breaks up with her. I won't give away the reasons, but this no-nonsense women is in need of a little muscle. That's where Henry comes in he's her muscle and also one of her devastatingly handsome co-workers. We follow Henry and Kate on their short journey to Love Lane where we find out that the doors to Kate's new apartment are full of brand new opportunities.I loved this short story from this debut author. It was a unique take on an unrequited romance. After reading I'm sure you will want more from Henry and Kate. I'm hoping to see them in the future books. Each book will be about a different person who resides at love lane. I recommend you one-click this short and sweet story. You won't be disappointed in the least.

A Rose and Spider Web for America's Troubled Heart is a narrative of the changes in America's values, primarily since WWII. When atomic bombs announced the arrival of a science that challenged the security of Newtonian mechanics and as technology distracted us from the importance of ethics and morality, we abandoned or redefined our traditional goals. As we became aware that what we call knowledge is merely an acceptable and useful idea and not a substantial truth, we grow anxious. I offer no absolute plan, but a direction. It is my intention to reveal some of the many strands of our confusion and thus to help clarify the issues that divide us. It is not my intention to tell you what to think but to give you concrete examples to think about. Each chapter focuses on a specific faced of American life; together they present a narrative of America's current social dilemma. Like all stories, my book has an "exposition" (Not Too Long Ago, People Knew What They Were About), a "complication" (Then, They Succumbed to the Lures of Technology and Materialism, a "rising action" (And Fell Victim to the Conflicts of the Times), a "climax" (Finally, They Experienced A Fundamental Revolution in Knowledge), a "falling action" (Therefore, We Need to Retool our Minds), and a "resolution" (And to Reestablish Grounded Values). American history, then, especially since WWII, is a dramatic illustration of our ideas about knowledge, ignorance, and faith. It also reveals the confusion rooted in our denial of the paradoxical nature of reality, and by our casual disregard of mortality. We must be forever young, but who is to rear the children?

A Rose and Spider Web for America's Troubled Heart, by John Somer

About the Author John Somer is a Professor Emeritus of Emporia (Kansas) State University. His academic interests are the processes of learning and the cultural shifts in literature through time. He has coedited and coauthored twelve academic books, three of which reached a general audience: "The Vonnegut Statement," "Writing Under Fire: Stories of the Vietnam War," and the "Anchor Book of New Irish Writing." He has had a number of jobs, as a farmer, a railroader, a realtor, a janitor, an electrician, a plumber, and a laborer. He has poured cement, roofed houses, laid hardwood floors, dug ditches, and planted many gardens. Upon graduating from college, he returned home, where he lay on the floor, taping many sheets of typing paper together so he could have a strip of paper long enough to hold a time line of the history of the Earth and its peoples. His mother, perhaps in desperation, insisted that he immediately get up off the floor and return to college to become a teacher. That worked out pretty good because he enjoyed learning with his students about the mystery and beauty of literature. There, he also found his wife and a life.

A Journey to the Heart of Things By Eve What are we to do when a Newtonian view of our world as predictable and therefore manageable, is blasted away by two atomic bombs, when binary concepts such as spirt and matter or mind and matter lose relevance, when our concepts of reality have become either too enormous or too infinitesimal to experience much less verify empirically? In A Rose and Spider for America’s Troubled Heart Dr. John Somer pursues these and other questions in both simple, concrete language, metaphor, and occasionally parable. However, this deeply personal narrative is not a mere quest for answers to such questions. It seeks nothing less than comfort for our confused and troubled hearts. Somer’s search takes surprising turns. It may not provide comfort for all readers; however, his invitation to journey along with him is well worth accepting if for no other reason than the rich terrain of history, both cultural and personal, that it traverses. It’s a trip you won’t soon forget, and, who knows? Along the way you may find the balm you seek, which may turn out to be much closer to the Somer’s suggestion than you might at first suppose.

If you are a thinking person, you will find yourself at times, laughing, crying, agreeing, arguing but always thinking and rethinking. Of particular delight are the stories of growing up in rural Kansas, a place we should all hope still exists. Professor Somer blends, delightfully, a mixture of fiction, personal history, criticism and passion, all with the aim of teaching us to reflect upon who we are, as a people and as individuals. And, nothing may be more certain, than the need for all to think about what sort of life we should lead and the importance of pursuing this question. Those who merely "fly over" Kansas, will miss the importance of the lessons it may teach us about life and living.

By Rutele Dr. Somer's book will make you think, and will revisit questions you may have asked yourself many times before. It's insightful, sometimes humorous, more often deeply profound. It addresses our changing values, the impact of technology on our lives, and makes us ask ourselves where we are going as we embrace materialism and social changes. I recommend it to every thinking person wishing to explore their own reality and state of being.By Ruta Zimmermann

Harold let go of the door handle. The hand began to shake, the tremor spreading down his arm to the rest of his body making him look electrified. The unmistakable sound of the old door opening up behind him caused his bladder to release, the right leg of his Dockers grew dark with urine. The thing was now in the room with him, walking to him, the floor giving and bending with every footfall. His knees weakened, then unlocked. Just as his body began to fall, a wet, massive hand, reeking of coppery blood, wrapped around his neck and ceased his descent. Harold’s heart pounded in his ears and blocked out all other sounds, but he knew another one of those things was now on the opposite side of his door, and so, with a mad smile spreading across his face, he couldn’t help but mouth the words. “Rewm sarvace”

An entertaining and digestible volume that demystifies science. Eat this and live to 100. Don't, and die. Today, hyperboles dominate the media, which makes parsing science from fiction an arduous task when deciding what to eat, what chemicals to avoid, and what's best for the environment. In Is That a Fact?, bestselling author Dr. Joe Schwarcz carefully navigates through the storm of misinformation to help us separate fact from folly and shrewdness from foolishness. Are GMOs really harmful? Or could they help developing countries? Which "miracle weight-loss foods" gained popularity through exuberant data dredging? Is BPA dangerous or just a victim of unforgiving media hype? Is organic better? Dr. Joe questions the reliability and motives of "experts" in this "easy-to-understand yet critical look at what's fact and what's plain nonsense.

From Booklist If you combined the rigorous scientific approach of Ben Goldacre (Bad Science, 2010) with the enthusiasm and outspoken prose of James Randi (the noted skeptic and debunker), you would have Joe Schwarcz, chemist, science writer, and radio host. Here, in his latest collection of essays, he tackles a wide variety of topics: bogus self-help products, quackery, homeopathy, misinformed celebrities (i.e., celebs who make ridiculous statements because they don’t know they’re misinformed), fish-oil supplements, weight-loss plans, Dr. Oz, Jamie Oliver, GMOs, and the list goes on. It’s important to note, too, that he doesn’t take a hard-core debunking tack to everything he discusses: the book is divided into three broad categories called black, gray, and white (black representing things for which there is no scientific evidence, white being those for which there is hard evidence, and gray being those in between). The author’s entertaining writing style and clear, precise explanations make the book a joy to read, and his choice of subjects is so wide-ranging that there really is something for everyone here. --David Pitt

Review “Written with a light touch and refreshing humor, this book provides a solid, authoritative starting point for anyone beginning to look at the world with a skeptical eye and a refresher for those further along that path.” — Library Journal"The author's entertaining writing style and clear, precise explanations make the book a joy to read, and his choice of subjects is so wide-ranging that there is really something for everyone here." —Booklist

There is no fluff or dilly-dallying here. Schwarcz explains the science behind pseudoscience. Later in the book Schwarcz also delves into the history of science and does a very credible job in this area. Those of us well-acquainted with science will appreciate the author’s humor and derisiveness about pseudoscience. Those less familiar with science but are open minded will learn a lot and should definitely read this book. I fear that the people who most need to read this book won’t or even if they do, will be unwilling to accept the message about real science. I strongly recommend this book to people who are confused about how science and pseudoscience appear in the mass media and who want to learn more. I also recommend this book to people who like science and just want to see it from a different perspective.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. It's OK, have a few issues with it By Ariel This book is nice and falls into the genre of "debunking" books, to which I am particularly attracted. It does deconstruct standard myth/misinformation about homeopathy, herbal "therapies," the GMO "controversy" (that doesn't exist in rational science), molecular water, and other pseudoscientific topics. He uses a lot of quotes which, while good ones, are kind of noticeable in their number. The writing style can be a bit flip at times, which is a little concerning to me, as these misconceptions are important ones that need to be seriously debunked, and his language might be off-putting enough to those who disagree so as to fuel their determined disagreement. Still, I notice that this is an author who writes material clearly targeted to a lay audience, so perhaps that's why it reads the way it does (eg, it doesn't read like, say, Paul Offit's books on the same topic). As a scientist, I also feel that some sections are incomplete or surprisingly outdated for a recent publication. I suspect that my "issues" with this book probably stem from the fact that I'm not exactly the right target audience, but his content is good, and the message is important.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Interesting and Lively By George Poirier In a very engaging, generally accessible and friendly prose, the author sifts through a variety of cases where science, pseudoscience, quackery and fraud play varying roles. The book is divided into three main sections: nonsense (17 cases), some element of truth (21 cases) and factual (29 cases). Throughout the book, the author, a chemist, does not shy away from including the names of the various chemicals involved in his stories. As anyone familiar with chemistry knows, some of these names can be quite a mouthful. Their inclusions here will likely please the most dedicated chemistry enthusiasts. Overall, I found that the great majority of the cases presented pertain to health, i.e., nutrition, medicine, etc. However, there are a few that deal with non-health matters.Although some passages dealing with the detailed mechanics of various chemical reactions would likely be a bit tedious for some, I believe that this book can still be enjoyed by a fairly broad readership - even by those with little or no interest in chemistry, since overall there is much here to ponder.

We think of the past as a more innocent time. But in these stories of California teenagers acting out in the last years of the '70s, it's easy to see that love, loss, and heartbreak are even more poignant when viewed through 15- or 16-year-old eyes. Surrounded by friends and family who are spinning with their own losses and heartache, these teenage girls navigate the terrors and tenderness of life in the only ways they know how.
