A Rose and Spider Web for America's Troubled Heart is a narrative of the changes in America's values, primarily since WWII. When atomic bombs announced the arrival of a science that challenged the security of Newtonian mechanics and as technology distracted us from the importance of ethics and morality, we abandoned or redefined our traditional goals. As we became aware that what we call knowledge is merely an acceptable and useful idea and not a substantial truth, we grow anxious. I offer no absolute plan, but a direction. It is my intention to reveal some of the many strands of our confusion and thus to help clarify the issues that divide us. It is not my intention to tell you what to think but to give you concrete examples to think about. Each chapter focuses on a specific faced of American life; together they present a narrative of America's current social dilemma. Like all stories, my book has an "exposition" (Not Too Long Ago, People Knew What They Were About), a "complication" (Then, They Succumbed to the Lures of Technology and Materialism, a "rising action" (And Fell Victim to the Conflicts of the Times), a "climax" (Finally, They Experienced A Fundamental Revolution in Knowledge), a "falling action" (Therefore, We Need to Retool our Minds), and a "resolution" (And to Reestablish Grounded Values). American history, then, especially since WWII, is a dramatic illustration of our ideas about knowledge, ignorance, and faith. It also reveals the confusion rooted in our denial of the paradoxical nature of reality, and by our casual disregard of mortality. We must be forever young, but who is to rear the children?

A Rose and Spider Web for America's Troubled Heart, by John Somer

About the Author John Somer is a Professor Emeritus of Emporia (Kansas) State University. His academic interests are the processes of learning and the cultural shifts in literature through time. He has coedited and coauthored twelve academic books, three of which reached a general audience: "The Vonnegut Statement," "Writing Under Fire: Stories of the Vietnam War," and the "Anchor Book of New Irish Writing." He has had a number of jobs, as a farmer, a railroader, a realtor, a janitor, an electrician, a plumber, and a laborer. He has poured cement, roofed houses, laid hardwood floors, dug ditches, and planted many gardens. Upon graduating from college, he returned home, where he lay on the floor, taping many sheets of typing paper together so he could have a strip of paper long enough to hold a time line of the history of the Earth and its peoples. His mother, perhaps in desperation, insisted that he immediately get up off the floor and return to college to become a teacher. That worked out pretty good because he enjoyed learning with his students about the mystery and beauty of literature. There, he also found his wife and a life.

A Journey to the Heart of Things By Eve What are we to do when a Newtonian view of our world as predictable and therefore manageable, is blasted away by two atomic bombs, when binary concepts such as spirt and matter or mind and matter lose relevance, when our concepts of reality have become either too enormous or too infinitesimal to experience much less verify empirically? In A Rose and Spider for America’s Troubled Heart Dr. John Somer pursues these and other questions in both simple, concrete language, metaphor, and occasionally parable. However, this deeply personal narrative is not a mere quest for answers to such questions. It seeks nothing less than comfort for our confused and troubled hearts. Somer’s search takes surprising turns. It may not provide comfort for all readers; however, his invitation to journey along with him is well worth accepting if for no other reason than the rich terrain of history, both cultural and personal, that it traverses. It’s a trip you won’t soon forget, and, who knows? Along the way you may find the balm you seek, which may turn out to be much closer to the Somer’s suggestion than you might at first suppose.

If you are a thinking person, you will find yourself at times, laughing, crying, agreeing, arguing but always thinking and rethinking. Of particular delight are the stories of growing up in rural Kansas, a place we should all hope still exists. Professor Somer blends, delightfully, a mixture of fiction, personal history, criticism and passion, all with the aim of teaching us to reflect upon who we are, as a people and as individuals. And, nothing may be more certain, than the need for all to think about what sort of life we should lead and the importance of pursuing this question. Those who merely "fly over" Kansas, will miss the importance of the lessons it may teach us about life and living.

By Rutele Dr. Somer's book will make you think, and will revisit questions you may have asked yourself many times before. It's insightful, sometimes humorous, more often deeply profound. It addresses our changing values, the impact of technology on our lives, and makes us ask ourselves where we are going as we embrace materialism and social changes. I recommend it to every thinking person wishing to explore their own reality and state of being.By Ruta Zimmermann
