An awful poet, dumped by his girlfriend, roams through Italy, where he clearly doesn't belong; an oil delivery man falls in love with a clumsy woman and becomes even clumsier than she is; and a six year old and his father kill over two hundred flies at a horse farm while the father wonders about life and death. Poor Advice and Other Stories, with its mix of the serious and the absurd, reveals Lou Gaglia’s humor, imagination, and range. A man avoids paying a World Series bet to a dying old woman; a vindictive whale chases after movie stars; and a man is jealous of his brother-in-law’s ventriloquist dummy. Find these stories and many others in Mr. Gaglia’s debut book. Winner of the 2015 New Apple Literary Award for short story fiction. Winner of the 2016 New York Book Festival (Fiction) In Poor Advice and Other Stories, Lou Gaglia puts the entertainment back in literary fiction. Many of his characters seem laughable and misguided in their fumbling ways, but the reader will come to love them for their heart-warming innocence. You will laugh, you will cry, but mostly you will go away remembering his vivid characters, his spot on dialogue, and his varying modes of conveying the stories in this unique collection, all of which reflect the talents of an outstanding fiction writer. MITCHELL WALDMAN, author of Petty Offenses & Crimes of the Heart Lou Gaglia has a knack for taking mundane, everyday tasks—like pumping gas, selling pools, and getting your car repaired—and turning them into the funniest and most damn profound stories you've ever read. Don't let the title fool you. Gaglia's stories are full of good advice. Just don't take any of them too seriously or you may find your life in shambles. NATHANIEL TOWER, author of Nagging Wives, Foolish Husbands What I like best about the people and places that populate Lou Gaglia's Poor Advice is that they're all familiar to me. But this is no mean familiarity. Anything but, in fact. These are the people that you meet in your dreams and the places you've visited only in your imagination: people who fail to see the big picture, obsess over one random-seeming detail of their daily routine, are occasionally an orca. It's nice to get to know them better. MATT ROWAN, author of Big Venerable His readers will find in Lou Gaglia's Poor Advice a new voice in contemporary short fiction, a voice made memorable by its sensitivity to language as it is spoken today, yet expressing the old verities of the human heart. EARL INGERSOLL, Emeritus Distinguished Professor of English, SUNY at Brockport. The downtrodden characters that populate Poor Advice chisel away at their blue-collar circumstances and by stories end, without your consent, there’s a fissure splintering your heart. Lou Gaglia is a spellbinding writer who gathers material from the underbelly gutter-stuff and conjures up a bit of hope for the hopeless, a place to call home from the homeless, and a fighter’s chance at love for the lonely strangers who are, after all, a lot like us. JASON OCKERT, author of Wasp Box Shake yourself free from the restraints of the ordinary—enter the clever and oh-so-quirky mind of Lou Gaglia and his oddly so, strangely so, poignant cast of characters. Review "Poor Advice"is a fine, well-balanced, collection of short stories and comes with "A Reader's Guide" that could facilitate discussion of this book in secondary and tertiary educational settings. It is certainly one that will not disappoint either recreational and/or academic readers.                    ― Amsterdam Quarterly   Shake yourself free from the restraints of the ordinary--enter the clever and oh-so quirky mind of Lou Gaglia and his oddly-so, strangely-so, poignant cast of characters.                    ― Kathryn Magendie, author of SWEETIE Lou Gaglia has a knack for taking mundane, everyday tasks--like pumping gas, selling pools, and getting your car repaired--and turning them into the funniest and most damned profound stories you've ever read. I would call these stories "short shorts", as most of them are only a few pages long, making them very easy to read. The stories run the gamut from funny to sweet to weird to complex, and the cast of characters is delightful. From the carpet cleaner with a grudge to a young man making a trek to Rome to forget a lost love, to a Russian spy and an American priest, these stories and their characters will keep readers entertained. ---Bobbie Grob for Readers' FavoriteIn his collection Poor Advice and Other Stories, Lou Gaglia expertly mixes the absurd and the poignant so that you aren't overwhelmed by either...Gaglia's voice is confident and confidential, like a friend of a friend you meet at a party that tells you a couple of stories and you want to hear more.--Main Street RagPoor Advice is an imaginative collection of stories for purveyors of the short story form as well as for readers who enjoy a new twist to the postmodern take on existentialism, rich and creamy with nostalgia, wit and humor, and surprise much like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates. My advice, dear reader, is not to sample Lou Gaglia’s stories, but rather to read ’em all! ---Toasted Cheese Literary Magazine

By TowerOPower Throughout this short story collection, Lou Gaglia weaves together the absurd and serious, somehow making everything believable. These are stories that are easy to get lost in, and you'll find an exciting new adventure in each tale. There's never a dull moment in this book. I highly recommend Gaglia's work to any fan of short stories. .Gaglia has a knack for taking mundane, everyday tasks—like pumping gas, selling pools, and getting your car repaired—and turning them into the funniest and most damn profound stories you've ever read. I ran “Little Leagues” in Umbrella Factory Magazine a few years back. At the time I read “Little Leagues” I knew it was a higher caliber story than many I was reading at the submission desk. “Little Leagues” also felt like it could have been my neighborhood growing up. There was a very universal feel to it. When I reread it in Poor Advice I felt the same way. But it wasn't my favorite Gaglia story anymore. “This Is My Montauk” has to be one of the most quiet, beautifully heartbreaking stories I've ever read. It's the story of two guys who live on Long Island and and they go help out a dead friend's mother. It's not a particularly long story. There is more going on in this small space than many novels I've read. Perhaps this is the definition of a good short story writer: a writer who can swing from the very funny to the very serious and still retain a sense of universality.

The plots are similar to how Seinfeld approached plot: find the humor and quirk in the everyday experience. This is what Gaglia does in this book. His character voices, whether told in first or third person point of view, are dark and twisted funny. This book made me laugh out loud. It's also written from an intelligent brain. Anything really funny has to come out of a sharply perceptive mind and imagination. I could have read more. Terrific. Highly recommended.

When Professor Linyard came back from his holiday in the Maine woods the air of rejuvenation he brought with him was due less to the influences of the climate than to the companionship he had enjoyed on his travels. To Mrs. Linyard's observant eye he had appeared to set out alone; but an invisible traveller had in fact accompanied him, and if his heart beat high it was simply at the pitch of his adventure: for the Professor had eloped with an idea.

The Descent of Man and Other Stories, by Edith Wharton

From the Back Cover The sly wit and penetrating wisdom of Edith Wharton--one of the most celebrated novelists in the English language--is ever on tap in this essential collection of her short fiction. The social chronicler of the Gilded Age, she exposed the excesses and hypocrisies of refined society in fiction replete with passion, sexual politics, and the rumblings of incipient feminism... as well as astonishingly dramatic storytelling.

Here in one volume is a treasure trove of Wharton's short fiction. The Descent of Man, and Other Stories, first published as a collection in 1904, features short stories that appeared in fashionable publications including Scribner's, Cosmopolitan, and Collier's Weekly. Also in this volume is the novella "Madame De Treymes," first published in 1907, the tale of an American woman in the unpleasant thrall of a French aristocrat.

About the Author Edith Wharton was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, known for such classics as The House of Mirth, Ethan Frome, and The Age of Innocence, for which she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1921. A member of the New York elite, Wharton drew on her experiences as part of society to critique its inner workings and the conflict between personal desires and societal norms. Wharton died in 1937, leaving behind a rich literary legacy.

Her Third Collection By Dave_42 "The Descent of Man and Other Stories" is the third collection of short fiction from Edith Wharton and was published on April 30th of 1904. Oddly enough there are two versions of the collection which were published the same year. The Macmillan edition included 10 stories while the Scribner's edition only had 9 stories as it did not include "The Letter". The stories were also in a different order in the two editions. For purposes of this review, I am listing the stories in the order they were in the Macmillan edition. "The Descent of Man" - Published originally in "Scribner's Magazine" in March of 1904. Professor Linyard is a man of science who writes a book where he pretends to take the side of religion, expecting it to be understood as a satire of popular scientific books. When it is taken as serious, he goes along with it in order to provide better for his family, thus selling his principles time and time again."The Other Two" - Published originally in "Collier's Weekly" on February 13th of 1904. Mr. Waythorn has married Alice Haskett, who was married twice before and has a child, Lily, by her first marriage. When his business brings her second husband into their lives, and her first husband continues to be part of his daughter Lily's life, he initially becomes upset at the situation. However, he eventually realizes the position she is in and comes to accept the situation."Expiation" - Published originally in "Hearst's International-Cosmopolitan" in December of 1903. Mrs. Fetherel is a new author who manages to get her book published. She is also the niece of the Bishop of Ossining, whose own literary efforts have not sold well, thus preventing him from paying for needed fixing of the chantry window. When her book "Fast and Loose" is considered "harmless" by the critics, she gets her uncle to denounce it, thus improving the sales, and the chantry window is able to be constructed, thanks to a generous donation, by a woman who chooses to remain anonymous."The Lady's Maid's Bell" - Published originally in "Scribner's Magazine" in November of 1902. A ghost story, where Miss Hartley becomes the lady's maid to Mrs. Brympton, a woman who is a near-invalid. A previous maid, had died, and Miss Hartley sees and hear things which have driven those who have taken the job between out of the house within six months of accepting the position."The Mission of Jane" - Published originally in "Harper's Monthly" in December of 1902. Lethbury consents to adopting a child when his wife Alice insists. Their marriage was not going well, and Lethbury feels that Jane will keep his wife happy. Initially he is kept out of Jane's life, but as she grows up he is forced to participate more and be a part of both Jane and Alice's life."The Reckoning" - Published originally in "Harper's Magazine" in August of 1902. Clement Westall and his wife Julia have agreed on a different kind of marriage. Julia had been married before, and was allowed to walk away when she decided to. Thus, she wanted for both her and Clement to have the same ability. She is surprised when Clement exercises that option, forcing her to reflect back on what she had done to her first husband, John Arment."The Letter" - First published in "Harper's Magazine" in April of 1904. When Colonel Alington dies, the narrator reflects back on the one story he told that said the most about who he was, and the bravery of one woman and the sacrifice she was willing to make for Italy. This is my favourite story in this collection, one in which Edith Wharton very artfully mixes history, character, and story."The Dilettante" - Published originally in "Harper's Monthly" in December of 1903. After seeing Miss Ruth Gaynor off at the train station, Thursdale pays a call on Mrs. Vervain to discuss his previous visit which he and Miss Gaynor had paid to Mrs. Vervain. Mrs. Vervain tells him a story about how Miss Gaynor doesn't like the friendship between Thursdale and Mrs. Vervain."The Quicksand" - Published originally in "Harper's Magazine" in June of 1902. Mrs. Quentin is upset when her son Alan is rejected by Hope Fenno because of his owning a newspaper which is ruthless in its reporting. He asks her to go see Miss Fenno, but when she does so, she recognizes a bit of herself and remembers the sacrifice she had to make when she married as well as the kind of person her son is."A Venetian Night's Entertainment" - First published in "Scribner's Magazine" in December of 1903. An amusing story about Tony Bracknell and his first time in Venice as a sailor on a merchant ship. This is a very nice collection of stories, with a good amount of diversity in the subject matter and styles. Edith Wharton once again shows that she can write short fiction very well, and that she can use all aspects to create an engaging story which keeps the reader's interest. Not quite as good as the collection "Crucial Instances" in my opinion, but worthwhile nonetheless.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Other Two By Emily I only had to read The Other Two for my American Literature 2 class which is what I'll be doing a review on. I believe that this was a funny story due to the awkward circumstances of a man, Waythorn, being married to a woman, Alice, who has previously been married and divorced twice. Waythorn keeps getting thrown at her past husbands since Alice's daughter, Lily, was stricken with typhoid. He ends up seeing the first husband because he wants to visit his daughter and sees the second because he is forced to do business with him. All three men seem to be very polite and good natured so it makes you question why Alice was divorced twice before marrying Waythorn. The only reason I give it a four is because the ending left me completely unsatisfied, as did it for the rest of my class. It does make you want more but the harsh reality is that there is no more after The Other Two so you're forced to contemplate you're own ending!

My favorites were by Scarlett Flame and Billierosie. The Bed and Breakfast in Scarlett Flame’s story had the allure like the “Hotel California.” As always, Billierosie’s story sent a warm tingle up my spine. An enjoyable read to escape the rigors of a mundane life.

Cynical single gal Larissa has been to too many weddings. Nonetheless, when her friend Malena asks her to be a bridesmaid, she's a good sport, despite the floor-length aqua satin nightmare she's made to wear.

Larissa has given up on the idea of ever walking down the aisle herself. These days, her idea of a perfect Saturday night is more likely to involve wine and on-demand movies than high heels and a push-up bra.

Enter Mark, the bride's sexy single brother who sees something special in Larissa. Mark, the one man who has Larissa considering breaking her "no wedding hookups" rule. But will they share a night of fun or something more? With plenty of champagne and the blissful romance of a wedding, true love might just blossom.

Put That Dog Out!, by Jayne Leaney

About the Author Jayne Leaney is passionate about riding horses and walking her dogs. At around seven years of age, she read Black Beauty and knew she wanted to write a similar book. Jayne joined Young Farmers at nineteen, where she met her husband. They married in 1982, moved to the farm where he worked and where they met Nipper, and experienced the trauma of a farm fire. After working for thirty years as a secretary and PA, she was made redundant. She took a part time job and on hearing some judges' hints for the Hays Children's 500-word stories, was inspired to put pen to paper.

A story of friendship and love for all ages By Canucky57 Jayne has written a lovely book, which will bring a smile to your face and leave you with a warm feeling, hey life is good. The book is aimed at children and they will certainly enjoy it. It is an animal story told from the animals point of view. Nipper the dog is obviously special, you can tell from the moment you meet him. Like Enzo the dog in the book, "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein, Nipper tells his story with good humour and disbelief of the ways of humans. His bravery is natural, part of who he is. Obviously semi-autobiographical, Jayne tells a simple story that all ages can enjoy. I highly recommend this for young and old alike who enjoy feel good books starring animals.Okay, I confess I know the author, she is a family friend. I have visited her farm and have memories of the horse Lady among others. :-)

Told from Nipper the dog's point of view, it follows the animals as they go about their daily lives and as they observe each other and the various comings and goings on the farm. This is based on a true story and is a wonderful book to read aloud at bedtime to small children - one chapter a night until the tale is done.

A 3 book - Steampunk/Cyberpunk -box set with a strong female protagonist flying high above the chaos of a post-apocalyptic world. I Will Breathe The year is 2836 - eight hundred years since The Great War. Liberty has grown up in this post-apocalyptic climate. Her home is an airship built by her adopted father. It has been five years since his death and each day is just another day of trying to survive in a hostile environment. That is until a dying friend of her father asks if she’ll take custody of a small, child-like robot. Into Forbidden After Liberty's death, her granddaughter, Harmony, inherits Boy and Airus. Harmony still travels the same routes as her grandmother - until one day when her brother and cousin turn up missing while scavenging for items in The Forbidden Lands. Fortunately, an escaped slave agrees to escort Harmony to the walled-off city called Freedom. While it isn’t a place Harmony would normally travel to, she's determined to rescue Walker and Journey from the group of huge, spike-like robots, aptly named Overseers. An Ill Wind A quick trip up the east coast quickly turns into a life and death experience for Harmony when hurricane-force winds plunges her airship into the ocean. When Airus drifts upon a tiny island, she is faced with a deflated balloon, two broken robots, a damaged friction engine and the fear of running out of fresh water. This might be enough to discourage the bravest heart, but Harmony is determined to stay alive. She simply refuses to believe she'll never see her family or Griffin again.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Fantastic Series By Fantasy Book Lane It's safe for me to call myself a fan of this series. I Will Breathe, book one, is probably my favorite of the trio. There's plenty of action throughout as well as great character development. I highly recommend this series to others.Review of I Will Breathe:When I picked this up, I was expecting a steampunk adventure. Well, adventure is what I normally get when I read steampunk, but I quickly figured out that this story was very different. It's a character driven novel with a moderate amount of action, but it draws an emotional response that I wasn't prepared for.I never expected to tear up and worry over a robot, but Ms. Puckett managed to stab me in the heart with the endearing little character Boy. Normally, I'd find a robotic child extremely creepy and run screaming from the room. But Boy is so innocent and loveable that I couldn't help loving him as much as Liberty comes to.Liberty begins as independent and rough around the edges. Well, she stays that way, but she begins to learn how wonderful it is to have companions, in a world where people spend their lives all alone. Love has all but disappeared, and as a result, humans are on their way to extinction. Liberty was content to journey alone, finding whatever treasures were left after the Great War. As it turns out, she will find even greater treasures in companionship. Now Liberty is able to share those treasures with those she has come to love. Her outlook changes dramatically and for the better. She is a wonderful character, staying true to herself while still managing to evolve. That's good writing.I must also mention that I loved the way apples and honey were presented as something so precious and beautiful. It reminded me of how much we take for granted. It was easy to put myself in Liberty's position, experiencing a bleak future in a dying world.Review of Into Forbidden:Harmony faces grave danger while attempting to rescue her brother and cousin. Her path leads her to a new friend, and the possibility of love.I'm not sure why Ms. Puckett writes short fiction. This would make an excellent full-fledged novel. There is so much to this world, and so much depth in these hundred or so pages, and it left me wanting a lot more! Naturally, I'll be reading the next book in the series, but I'm sure it will never be enough. Yes, that is a compliment! The world where Harmony finds herself is a complete mess. War has devastated the land, and she travels high above it all in her airship. She's tough while still remaining human, and I love that about her. She never becomes cliche or predictable. In finding Griffin, I think she's found an excellent match. He's brave and loyal, and the two make a great pair. This is one instance where a budding romance didn't detract at all from the action of the book. There's tons of action packed into these pages, and it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The robots were fascinating as well. Yes, there are bad ones, but I was delighted to see the return of Boy from book 1, and that he's in good condition though he's picked up some habits over the years. :) I enjoy that robots can be given their own personalities beyond some programmer's whim.Only two things bothered me about this story. First, there are a handful of typos that were just plain obnoxious. One comes at a time when the line of dialogue should be delivered with force, but it loses its luster when the words are out of order. Secondly was the length. Everything went by so fast! I would love to see this slowed down and the pages filled with all the details. What was it like being held by robots? What peril did Molly face? Those scenes could have been amazing, and I know Ms. Puckett has the talent to write them. She has a captive audience, and we're all begging for more.Review of An Ill Wind:Unlike book 2, this installment of the Forbidden Series is not action packed. Instead, it focuses more on Harmony and her overall character development. It gives us readers a more in depth view of her relationship with Boy, his past relationship with Liberty, and Molly is given a voice as well. There really aren't a million things to say since there's no grand adventure. But, as a fan of this series, I will say that despite the lack of action, I really enjoyed it. I was grateful to know Harmony better as she works on her airship and reflects on her life. By the end I was pleased with how things turn out and look forward to more steampunk adventures in the future. A short, but fulfilling story.

Very elementary -- and most points are just common sense, which is one of those survival skills you need. May be of use to a young, absolute beginner in preparing for life.

And it's not just stupid common sense stuff that makes you feel like you're wasting your time reading the book. It also isn't too list-y, it gives explanations and details about why and how to improve your prepping techniques, etc. I'm glad I got this book for free in exchange for my honest review! I will definitely be holding on to it to reference in the future. Thank you!
