The Nordic Diet made easy By Queen522 I bought The Nordic Diet based on a recommendation in the Sons of Norway Viking magazine and it did not disappoint. I recently gave a copy of the Nordic Diet to my sister for Christmas. This book is what I've been looking for for a long time. It is the "mediterrean" diet for Norwegians! It describes how to eat a healthy diet for northern Europeans with fish, spelt flour (you can find it at Whole Foods and Health stores), rye flours, fruit, vegetables, etc. It explains how to eat healthfully in traditional way.

That said, it also uses many ingredients that are either not available in the US or are prohibitively expensive. Substitutions will have to be made, and she makes no suggestions for them.In addition, I noted an error in the recipe for lobster when I read through the book the first time (cooking time cannot be 7 minutes -- they will be raw) which makes me question whether there are other mistakes.I will try some of the recipes and see how it goes. I love Scandinavian food in general and found her presentations beautiful. We'll see.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Love this book, elegant and practical By CrzGzr Cultures around the world have found their 'sweet spot' in survival. Survival until recently required a healthy diet based on availability and local agriculture. No tribe would expend more resources into a food item that gave back less than it took, like we do today. The Nordic Diet expounds the same healthy base others do: eat in season, in moderation and get outside to walk and exercise. But, the Nordic diet has different foods based on a place with long winters, short growing seasons and local meats. Maybe if you live in Miami and never leave the office and come home to play computer games or watch TV -potatoes and meatballs with lingonberry sauce might not get you healthy but that has nothing to do with the diet. I enjoyed reading about the French, Italian and Chinese diet lifestyles and the Nordic pretty much completed my circle; I am sure there are more out there but for me, I feel I have a nice happy base for healthy eating. The photos are stunningly beautiful.

In the latter part of the last century there lived a man of science, an eminent proficient in every branch of natural philosophy, who not long before our story opens had made experience of a spiritual affinity more attractive than any chemical one. He had left his laboratory to the care of an assistant, cleared his fine countenance from the furnace smoke, washed the stain of acids from his fingers, and persuaded a beautiful woman to become his wife. In those days when the comparatively recent discovery of electricity and other kindred mysteries of Nature seemed to open paths into the region of miracle, it was not unusual for the love of science to rival the love of woman in its depth and absorbing energy.

Mosses from an Old Manse and other stories, by Nathaniel Hawthorne

About the Author Nathaniel Hawthorne (born Nathaniel Hathorne; July 4, 1804 – May 19, 1864) was an American novelist and short story writer. Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in 1804 in the city of Salem, Massachusetts to Nathaniel Hathorne and the former Elizabeth Clarke Manning. His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never repented of his actions. Nathaniel later added a "w" to make his name "Hawthorne" in order to hide this relation. He entered Bowdoin College in 1821, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1824, and graduated in 1825. Hawthorne anonymously published his first work, a novel titled Fanshawe, in 1828. He published several short stories in various periodicals which he collected in 1837 as Twice-Told Tales. The next year, he became engaged to Sophia Peabody. He worked at a Custom Houseand joined Brook Farm, a transcendentalist community, before marrying Peabody in 1842. The couple moved to The Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts, later moving to Salem, the Berkshires, then to The Wayside in Concord. The Scarlet Letter was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels. A political appointment took Hawthorne and family to Europe before their return to The Wayside in 1860. Hawthorne died on May 19, 1864, and was survived by his wife and their three children. -wikipedia

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Unusual but delightful tales By Israel Drazin Many readers have enjoyed Nathaniel Hawthorne’s books (1804-1864) for more than a century. He was one of America’s greatest writers of his time, His books – such as: The scarlet Letter, The House of Seven gables, and The Marble Faun, are repeatedly being reprinted. People of virtually all ages will be able to appreciate his skill and enjoy how he tells his stories by reading the tales in this volume. The stories include: The Birthmark, Young Goodman Brown, Rappaccini Daughter, Mrs. Bullfrog, The Celestial Railroad, The Procession of Life Feathertop, and others. All are good and unusual. In The Birthmark, for example, a scientist decides to remove a birthmark from the face of his beautiful wife, a mark that he used to think added to her beauty, but now disgusts him. His wife also begins to dislike the mark. In Young Goodman, to cite another example, a man living in Salem during the days of the witch trials there meets the devil.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fair collection of stories. By MJP2 I mainly got this for "Rappacini's Daughter". Hawthorne must have been known mainly for satire, but satire is only passable when you have some idea of what is being satirized, so some of this went right over my head (e.g., a satire on "Pilgrim's Progress", which I haven't read).

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. got it for free By edward a zamora i downloaded this classic to read The Tall Man. You can see how Stephen King was heavily influenced by Hawthorne. In fact there is a King version of the Tall Man out there somewhere.

Even the author's introduction contains exactly one hundred words. Many of the stories, like Ferryboat Rush, will get you chuckling, but some will evoke a tear, as in The Sunset in My Father's Eyes. I love that it's easy to sneak in a story at one's convenience but if you are like me you'll find yourself wanting to read them all in one sitting.

Each unique story is expertly written and makes the mind explore many topics. Its small enough to carry around and useful as a conversation starter at gatherings. 20 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Cast Iron Phobia, Good-bye!!!! By Linda Abbott I was always terrified of cast iron cookware. I had tried once or twice to keep one in condition and totally failed. For all of you with cast iron phobia, this book is your salvation. The entire first portion of this book deals with cast iron cookware itself. You are taught how to properly season it so that it is non-stick, how to revive an antique piece, how to maintain it (a lot easier than you have been told), enameled cast iron vs. non-enameled (including the relative costs of each), what you can cook well in it and, more importantly, what you shouldn't cook in it. It also deals with a lot of myths circulating about cast iron cookware. If that was all that this book covered, it would have been an excellent reference book for anyone wanting to cook with cast iron. But that isn't where it stopped. After all the basics have been covered, the book continues with excellent recipes covering just about everything you might want to cook in it. When I first read the ingredient list on the first few recipes, I thought it contradicted everything that we were just taught about not cooking with acids, wine, etc. in cast iron...and then I looked at the instructions, and you were told to use enameled cast iron for those recipes. The vast majority of the recipes are not for enameled cast iron, although you could certainly use that if you own some. The recipes are not just campground recipes either (although those are there also). There are some very gourmet recipes done easy there, too. You couldn't ask for a more thorough book on cast iron, so if you were phobic, like I was, this is the book for you. I do feel obligated to tell you that this book was given to me requesting, but not requiring, a review. That fact did not affect what I have written. If it was awful, I would have said so. Thankfully, that wasn't the case.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Complete By Hatbox121 This recipe book has a lot more than recipes. It also has care instructions, refurbishing instructions, a short history and more. The recipes are separated into four sections: proteins, veggies and sides, breakfast, and desserts/sweets. The recipes have some basics like pancakes and fried chicken. It also has some more "fancy" items. The sections have a variety of different recipes across the board. For example the protein section doesn't just have steal and chicken. It also has turkey burgers, veal, lamb, and a variety of fish. A good addition for anyone wanting to add some variety to their cast iron recipe box.

Thank you - I use my cast iron a great deal, now there's new tastes and ways to present food for family and friends!

THE summer moon shone brightly down upon the sleeping earth, while far away from mortal eyes danced the Fairy folk. Fire-flies hung in bright clusters on the dewy leaves, that waved in the cool night-wind; and the flowers stood gazing, in very wonder, at the little Elves, who lay among the fern-leaves, swung in the vine-boughs, sailed on the lake in lily cups, or danced on the mossy ground, to the music of the hare-bells, who rung out their merriest peal in honor of the night.

Flower Fables, by Louisa May Alcott

From Publishers Weekly Written for Ralph Waldo Emerson's daughter, Ellen, when Alcott was 16, and first published in 1855, these six prosy fairy tales were chosen from a 1992 collection, Louisa May Alcott's Fairy Tales and Fantasy Stories, edited by Daniel Shealy; Shealy provides an informative afterword here. Readers meet a cast of elves, fairies, brownies and sprites with such Shakespearean names as Willy Wisp, Moonbeam and Thistledown, and the children who occasionally dally with them. Thinly disguised morality lessons told in an over-upholstered style, they instruct the audience in the importance of various virtues. In "The Frost King," for example, elves resolve to conquer the ice-hearted ruler of winter through peaceable means ("Let us teach you how beautiful sunshine and love and happy work can make you"). More than a little dated, the stories grow tedious with lofty homilies (e.g., "little Annie dwelt like a sunbeam in her home, each day growing richer in the love of others and happier in herself"). Preiss's (The Pig's Alphabet) garish artwork further hampers an emotional connection to the stories. The lack of tonal subtlety is aggravated by a self-consciously multicultural-esque grouping of fairy folk with oversize but misshapen eyes and bizarrely pointed ears and chins. Even the typeface, which has distractingly flowery ligatures, is overdone. All but the most die-hard Alcott fans can skip this one. Ages 5-12. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review Flower Fables is a treasury of six different stories penned by Louisa May Alcott. These old-fashioned fairy tales have been compiled and edited by Daniel Shealy, who has done editing on several Alcott books. The text is very readable, and has magic flavor added via the font's joining together of several letters. Today's children, like many children of the past, will enjoy meeting Alcott's fairies, sentient flowers, and other real and imagined characters. Illustrator Leah Palmer Preiss has filled the book with delightful and interesting fairies and other creatures. The illustrations are bright and full. Readers may want to watch for the bonuses of quotations and tiny portraits of those who influenced Louisa May Alcott. This book would make a good bedtime storybook, and like many tales of old, has good morals that children could take away with them perhaps without even realizing there was a lesson involved. The afterword is also interesting as it shares interesting details about Miss Alcott. For example, she wrote these tales when she was 16. Another bonus at the end of the book is the biographies that go along with the quotations and miniature portraits. -- From Independent Publisher

From the Publisher A talented group has been assembled to produce this edition. Daniel Shealy, the Alcott scholar who has edited the complete body of her fantasy fiction, contributes an illuminating afterward and is the book's editorial consultant. Leah Palmer Preiss's incomparable art suits the fresh and imaginative spirit of these pioneering tales. A playful facet of Preiss's exquisite illustrations is her inclusion of hidden quotes from and minuscule portraits of individuals who helped shape Alcott's life and work. Look closely and discover the words and faces of Shakespeare, Plato, Alcott's beloved mentors Emerson and Thoreau, and many more.

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Many versions vary in illustration quality By Brian Villanueva The stories in Flower Fables are excellent. However, for young children (age 3-5), you really need to include some type of picture on each page. Amazon sells about a dozen versions of the hardback of this book, and color pictures are sadly lacking in most of them. I checked out at least 3 versions from the library before settling on the one I am buying. If you're going to purchase Flower Fables, my recommendation is the version published in 1998 and illustated by Leah Palmer Preiss. She features full page color illustrations every 3-4 pages, and nearly every page includes some type of color. The introduction is abridged to fit on one page, but the text of the fables appears intact.Note that Amazon's "Look Inside" feature shows the same book interior regardless of which printing you are ordering.

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. A beautifully illustrated compilation of fables. By A Customer This discovery of unpublished fables by Louisa May Alcott should be read by children during their important impressionable years. The illustrations are beautiful and complimentary to the text. While classics of Louisa May Alcott, Little Women and Little Men, are for the early teens, these fables for the preteens tease the imagination in a magical way. This sort of alternative to the upbringing of children by the video media is sorely needed and provided by Flower Fables.
