Review I've read a borrowed copy of this; seeing that Amazon had it, I bought my own copy - I could see that digesting this material is going to take a while. The text is all here, unabridged. The image quality of the illustrations leaves a lot to be desired with this edition, however. It looks like a second-generation xerox in spots. If this is a problem, do yourself a favor and look for the 1980's hardcover reprint. The images are much better in that one. That said, the substance of this book is thoroughly recommended for the serious student of electrical engineering as well as fans of Tesla. Since this text was written in the late 1800s, and is reprinted here without alteration, the language can sometimes have the density of Shakespeare (without the poetry). Much of the phraseology has passed out of use in the last hundred years. This material is written for the intelligencia of Tesla's era, and not "dumbed down" for this age as many other books are. This is an advantage for someone who wants an authoratative viewpoint on this subject (who more authoratative than Tesla!), but poisonous to the casual reader. Many of the inventions discussed in this book are now commonplace (for instance - the AC induction motor, fully described here, is in use everywhere). Nikola's own depth of understanding of the principles involved make this a thoroughly intense experience for those who are ready for it. Readers who can understand this material are going to experience the devine "Ah-ha" on a regular basis throughout this book. Others will be put to sleep. This book will separate the men from the boys very quickly. Three things stopped me: 1) procrastination, 2) laziness, and 3) the impression that everyone who writes about Tesla will have a "kook" label stick to them for the rest of their lives. Why this is so is interesting, but first about the book. This is a reprint of one published a little more than a hundred years ago, and is most definitely not a "kook book." The author, Mr. Martin, writes a very good description of the nature and significance of Tesla's work up to about 1895. The second part of the book consists of reprints of lectures delivered by Tesla, apparently written by the great man himself. The book contains many good diagrams and illustrations. Both parts have the expected "old-fashioned" feel, but the book gives us a chance to compare Tesla's writing style with that of a contemporary. My own impression is that Tesla's writing style is fairly good as well as interesting, though perhaps even more florid than customary during that age. The book is rather long, and I would venture only two types are likely to read it in entirety: 1) historians of science, and 2) the Tesla sycophants. When the book was originally published Tesla was at the height of his powers. About that time his assertions started to become more and more grandiose, if not fantastic. Following the debacle of his "world wireless power transmission" scheme (just prior to WWI), his reputation suffered. Although he lived until 1941, in later life he tended to be increasingly seen as an eccentric loner and kook. He died in loneliness and poverty. OK, so why does a "kook" label tend stick to anyone who has more than passing interest in Tesla? The first reason is, of course, the fantastic and eccentric claims Tesla made late in life. But by itself this is not enough - after all, even the great Newton dabbled in alchemy and the Book of Revelations late in life. About the Author As AN introduction to the record contained in this volume of Mr. Tesla' s investigations and discoveries, a few words of "a biographical nature will, it is deemed, not be out of place, nor other than welcome. Nikola Tesla was born in 1857 at Smiljan, Lika, a borderland region of Austro-Hungary, of the Serbian race, which has maintained against Turkey and all comers so unceasing a struggle for freedom. His family is an old and representative one among these Switzers of Eastern Europe, and his father was an eloquent clergyman in the Greek Church. An uncle is to-day Metropolitan in Bosnia. His mother was a woman of inherited ingenuity, and delighted not only in skillful work of the ordinary household character, but in the construction of such mechanical appliances as looms and churns and other machinery required in a rural community. Nikola was educated at Gospich in the public school for four years, and then spent three years in the Real Scliule. He was then sent to Carstatt, Croatia, where he continued his studies for three years in the Higher Real Scliule. There for the first time he saw a steam locomotive. He graduated in 1873, and, surviving an attack of cholera, devoted himself to experimentation, especially in electricity and magnetism. His father would have had him maintain the family tradition by Altering the Church, but native genius was too strong, and he was allowed to enter the Polytechnic School at Gratz, to finish his studies, and with the object of becoming a professor of mathematics and physics. One of the machines there experimented with was a Gramme dynamo, used as a motor.

It shows in great detail not only the works of Tesla's experiments, but will give the reader a glimpse of the amazing range of his thinking. From alternating curent generators to Unipolar generators (generators being just one field of study) to theories and applications of polyphase currents and motors to high frequency and high potential currents, this gives the reader some basic understanding of his pioneering work.This is not about his life and times, and how this genius could understand the mysteries of electromagnestism but could not help himself when it comes to battling corporations represented by lawyers of JP Morgan. This is the real thing By A Customer This book is the compilation of Lectures given by Tesla in the late 1880's where he explains basically everything he has done so far, including real practical advice on how to build motors, coils, etc. Get it and ask yourself howcome he is rarely mentioned in today's textbooks.

Inventions, Researches & Writings of Nikola Tesla By Amazon Customer This is a very detailed technical writing of Tesla's major inventions, and it was published in 1894 by Electrical Engineer Magazine. If you want to really dig into the essence of Tesla's inventions this is an good source. So is "The Complete Patents of Nikola Tesla" ISBN 1-56619-266-8 published 1994. The number of contributions he made to technology is incredible! This man was truly amazing and probably the greatest genius of all time. It's too bad he was such an eccentric and failed to share more of his work with his peers. Had this happened our world would probably be far more advanced technologically. But the works he did share drastically changed the world for the better. He is finally beginning to get the credit he is due. If he could have appropriately financed his endeavors, there is no telling what might have transpired.

By Sara Carbone This is a special book - filled with rich characterizations and moving, sometimes deliciously bizarre, events. The suburbanites Acampora describes in her fictional town of Old Cranbury are people with deep and often painful longings, hidden (and not so hidden) insecurities and vices. These stories were crafted by a writer whose keen eye misses little, an observer who truly understands how life can trap, bolster or baffle us as we go through our days. As a suburbanite (and ex-city dweller) I felt like I could see parts of myself laid bare by her stories, displayed by a hand that deftly walked the line between compassion and ruthlessness. Acampora's writing is sharp and eloquent, nothing wasted, so while each story flies by, you are left wishing you could stay beyond the few hours or days she allows us to see. And the lines that connect each character’s little universe, criss-crossing in surprising and satisfying ways, remind the reader that in these communities we make for ourselves, despite what separates us, we are always connected and inexorably drawn to each. A must read!!

Lauren Acampora is so deft and precise with language it takes my breath away-- and yet the stories are completely readable, the characters recognizable, and the situations, though often strange, reflect humanity, struggle, connection, and love. Don't be swayed by the fact that these are short stories-- they are like little novels in themselves. I feel like Old Cranbury becomes a unique character as well. An outstanding debut-- definitely one to read, a good choice even for book clubs.

The characters are all unique and so busy navigating their way through life in a town where most people would aspire to live. However, once they are settled in Old Cranbury life's problems catch up to them. Each story reveals a new character with his or her own private secrets. These individual characters will reappear in subsequent stories about another resident of Old Cranbury who has a secret to hide. Individuals in this small town play a role in each other's lives. This book is most enjoyable to read not just because of the characters' unique situation, but especially worth while due to the quality of the writing. It is beautifully written and a delight for a reader who values excellent writing. I highly recommend it.

This diet can cause your body to drop its glucose and insulin levels, which is pointed out aptly by the author. It also causes a little water loss. This diet has also been known to help you get better and longer bouts of sleep, lower blood pressure and help your brain function at a sharper level.The author provides a simple to understand sample diet along with alternative food suggestions. There are several unique recipes that I tried, and the Drunken Beef is spectacular. This is a complete book for someone looking to explore this particular discipline. I recommend it highly.

By Zoltan Csipkes This book got everything about Ketogenic diet : the history of it, how ketosis works, the upsides and the downsides of Ketogenic diet too. I was mainly interested about the transition to this special diet, this book got this too! I really liked the meal plans and recipes (I've already tried the white chocolate almond protein shake, and its wonderful). I'll try more recipes from this book in the future, because they look delicious! Absolutely recommended.

By RedMoonRisingStudios I've been looking for ways to lose weight and am starting with my diet. I like the Ketogenic Diet because it reminds me of the Paleo Diet and I like the concept of lots of veggies and meat, some fruit. Rather than just being a big recipe book this book actually gives a nice overview of the Ketogenic diet, where did it come from, and guidelines to follow and better understand it. The recipes are unique and am looking forward to trying some as many of them are simple with not too many ingredients. Great book!

All the different lives it covers and the details in each story is just outstanding. Makes you realize that everyone today in all cultures and levels of societies experience difficulties in there day to day lives. And how they try to over come them, or at least deal with the situation. I'm already looking forward to the next book. I recommend this to everyone who has any interest in how people deal with the difficulties in the lives' of others.

I read all the books in the anthology, they were all good.Although on a similar theme, each story took a different approach. I was hooked very early on by not just the plots, but the characters and worldbuilding. A few authors new to me who I will be reading more of. Loved it.In the previous anthologies I've said that there was a mixed bag of good and not so good stories. In this one, though, I must confess, I Loved all the stories within. Each one was quite entertaining and some even kept me at the edge of the seat. I must say, I'd love to see these shorts expanded to novel size and let us see more of these couples and the men and women who surround them. Well written, entertaining stories!

Keeping The Stars Running Anthology! And each story couldn’t be more different from each other. Here they are with my comments and rating in the order they appear in the anthology:The Prince and the Programmer by Cassandra Pierce. 3.5 starsProbably the closest story here to a familiar romance plot. Food service mech/chef? is abducted but soon finds his new situation and “Prince” much more to his liking than his old one. I thought the characters were charming and the situation sort of funny. It was a sweet if not totally memorable way to open the anthology.About a Bot by Andrea Speed. 4 stars out of 5I loved/was frustrated by this terrific story by Andrea Speed. Speed creates this complex universe, complete with on going intergalactic war, one in which the humans aren’t doing terribly well. The main character, Tahir, is the Nebula space station’s mechanic who keeps all their robots in working order. He also rescues and repairs older bots, giving them names and making them his “pets” with personalities. In fact, Tahir is far more comfortable with his bots then with the rest of the crew on his station. I loved this character. He’s believable, fascinating, and when it comes to his interactions with his bots then Tahir becomes irresistible. As are his bots, including Spider and the adorable Bagel bot and Tank.I loved this story so much that the ending, or perhaps lack of one frustrated me with its tantalizing possibilities. How I would love to see this made into a full length novel. Anyone listening?The Aurora Conspiracy by Lexi Ander. 4 stars out of 5In the Aurora Conspiracy, Lexi Ander’s takes ecological concerns and mining into space with no less than 2 completely different species and a conspiracy to boot. Regin Valenta, crane operator for the Aurora Minerals and Rare Metals concern is being interrogated by constables from The Fraternity, a galactic law enforcement agency. One of them, a Nythlithian, Constable Markari Gan’Sey, shares a painful past with Regin, although only one remembers. The story becomes a dance between the main characters, as their past returns with its angst-filled memories and their attraction to each other flares back to life amidst an investigation into illegal mining practices on the planet below. It’s suspenseful, layered, and marvelous.Flight Risk by Tayla Andor 5 stars out of 5One of my favorite stories in the anthology. Again, we have an interplanetary war in progress and an embattled Kiel Navarro’s work as a mechanic in the Gear hangar, keeping the Gryphon wings in perfect operating order for their pilots. Andor’s world building is amazing and the author’s attention to detail bring this story and crews to life. Even the smallest touches, such as Kiel being half deaf where as most of the other pilots are deaf because of the noise of the engines and conditions they work in, give the readers a authentic feel for the environment and safety factors of the job Kiel does and the hangers in which he and his coworkers make their living. And it’s not a very nice one.The mechanics are being harassed, treated as lowly servants, who hide in their quarters for fear of retaliation. And its by whom that is so startling. A new Gryphon pilot, Marco Lafaele, a replacement for a recent death in the squad Wing Bravo, shakes up the status quo by showing an interest in Kiel, something that is just not done). His actions and determination not to follow along with his fellow pilots starts to put cracks in the SOP in the Hangers. And ripples from the fallout spread throughout Cadlow Station. I loved that Andors created the mechanic equipment down to the MagLens Kiel is using to augment his failing vision to the derogatory nicknames they earn him.There is mystery, romance, gritty war time battles, and finally a white knuckle ride to the rescue. Just an outstanding story on every level.and finally….Survival by Leona Carver. 3.5 t0 4.5 rating, really this story confounds me.Not a romance. I love Leona Carver so many aspects of this story didn’t surprise me while others absolutely did. Just when I thought I knew where the author was taking this story, it took off in an unexpected direction. And ending. We start off on the Velikaya Knyazhna, a giant colonist ship on its new to a new planet. Most of its crew is “sleeping” in order to make it to their destination without aging too much. But an emergency sees the “ship” and its caretakers waking up some of the scientists to examine the cause of the emergency and fix it…before its too late.Valentin Mashire, was trained to work on the planet, frozen on Earth and then shipped up to the “orbiting giant” in a crates, along with many others. He’s a botanical scientist, a park technician trained to work in the terrestial parkland on board that’s necessary to terraform the new planet they will land on. The length of the voyage? 100 years. Plenty of time for things to go wrong and they do. And that’s where ship’s Security officer, Fyodor Bendlin comes in.I can’t go any further. To do so, takes away the best of the surprises found within this story. I loved the descriptions of the park inside the ship and the ship itself. But the romance I wanted to happen was never going to be part of this story. No, this is all about Survival. But it’s the “who” that is trying to survive that will shock you as will the ending. Did I like this story? Not really. But did it fascinate me with its mythology and universe building? Yes. And it floored me with the surprising revelations and erotica.What a great anthology. I don’t know that I would have ended it with Survival. I think that Flight Risk would have grounded this anthology better with its more substantial ending. However, there is such variety, a true smorgasbord of stories, that everyone will find something to love.I recommend this series to all lovers of science fiction, romance and the possibilities of tomorrow.Cover art by Aisha Akeju. Love this cover artist and this cover is another splendid example of their work. Great job.

Not all the stories are romantic, though all but one had a romantic couple and story thread. Don’t look to most of these for grand sweeping declarations of love. We do get a variety of action and suspense true to the gene.The Prince and the Programmer by Cassandra Pierce 3 StarsJasno is a foodsynth machine repairman who would rather program the food than fix the machines. While working for a prince, he is mistaken for his client and kidnapped. Interesting twists and turns kept the plot moving forward. I liked the idea of the futuristic chef and liked the mistaken identity. I didn’t feel any chemistry between the MC’s though and felt the romance fell flat.About a Bot by Andrea Speed 3 StarsTahir is the Chief Maintenance Officer on a station but feels he is just a glorified janitor with his bots. He is being interviewed by a former crush on his duties but the war with a strange alien race intrudes.I loved the bots! They were adorable! I also like both Tahir and Jorian and felt the potential there. This was not a romance story, though there is a romantic pairing. This was really a story about Tahir and his contributions to the space station. However the story ended just as it started moving forward. There was so much more story to be told.The Aurora Conspiracy by Lexi Ander 4.5 StarsRegin is a crane operator on an orbital mining station suspected of blackmailing his employer. He comes face to face with an old love during the interrogation and finds out things aren’t what he thought they were.I liked the amount of world building that was done in so short a time. I had a good feel for the place. I also liked the intrigue and mystery that was going on. I liked Danny the robot and the other secondary characters and got a good feel for our MC’s. Our MC’s had good chemistry and the romance was well balanced with the sci-fi aspects.I would love to see more of this couple.Flight Risk by Talya Andor 4.5 StarsKiel is a mechanic for a planet side station of machines called Gears. The Gear riders, called Gryphons, are dismissive and rude to him, all except the new guy, Marco. Intrigue and mystery abounds as the Gears engage a neighbouring faction intent on taking over the station and fighting for water rights on the desolate planet.The world building was strong in this book. I loved the scene when Marco first flies out with his patrol and the landscape is described. We get a good sense of who everyone is and hints as to what may be going on. The mystery is good and I loved the romance between Marco and Kiel. I liked the way details were doled out. There weren’t info dumps, but you weren’t kept in the dark just to make you wonder. It unfolded naturally. Another plus was the tons of action.I really enjoyed this.Survival by Leona Carver 4.5 StarsValentin is a botanist on a ship heading to deep space on a colony journey. On the way there, the ships computer wakes him and five others to deal with a problem relating to the ship’s large forested park.Wow. This was a crazy sci-fi thriller movie quality story. Suspense, drama and things that go bump in the night. It is ironic that despite being the most sexually graphic of the anthology it is also the only one without a definite romantic pairing at the end.I enjoyed the ride. As I said, it felt like I was reading a movie. There isn’t a traditional HFN ending, but the ending is satisfying.

A Short but Well Written Historical Romance with Mystery By Angie Mike This is a short story and the prequel to Ms. Landon's 'Love Unbidden: Tales of the Bedford Street Brigade' which centers around a group of six men, all of whom are former Scotland Yard detectives but who now work independently. Mack Wallace is more or less the leader, and running security at a London exhibit guarding the worlds largest diamond. Days before the exhibit is to close, a murder is committed and the sole witness is a young lady named Cora Lane, who is determined to help find the killer. Cora, who was often so courageous, is not so brave when it comes to her heart though. Can Mack convince her to take a chance on them, or will Cora let happiness and true love slip away for fear of losing the one man she's waited her whole life for?What a great story, especially for it being so short! If you've got an hour, two at most, I think most anyone who enjoys a good mystery with their romance will surely like it. I utterly adored Cora, who was intelligent and talented, and Mack, who was strong and determined, not to mention Mack's amazing friends. I loved the mystery aspect which kept me guessing and the romance which was both tender and touching. It contains kissing only, no sex, for those who care about that sort of thing. Overall I simply thought it was a beautifully written and emotionally driven romance that begs the age old question: Is it better to have loved and lost, or never to have loved at all? In the end, it was well worth the $0.99 I paid and I'd easily recommend to a friend!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing By Sandy Milan This book is an offshoot of the "Cast in Scandal" series. The H is one of the investigators in that series. Here he and his colleagues are charged with guarding a famous diamond but end up with a murder on their hands. There is a witness but she disappears, only to reach out to him later. The h is afraid of the villains attacking her family but she comes up with a plan to stay with the H so that she can be protected. I can't imagine that anyone would allow a young woman to stay in the same house as a man during that time period. Anyway that's a minor irritation. There are lots of characters and things going on in a very short book. It came off choppy and it was hardly romantic. I'm really disappointed.

Atkinson I love that these stories are all finally out together and in print. I've been on this ride from the beginning, never questioning going all the way to the end. Some of these stories were my first experience with Tanzer, and I kept going back for more. It was great to watch this develop over the years, but it's best that everything is together now because as I read more and more of these stories as time went on I increasingly realized how much they were a part of a single big picture. I couldn't wait until it was complete to read the individual pieces, but now readers don't have to wait. It's all here and I picked up my own print copy so I'd have it all together. Do the same and get ready to change your life.Here are my reviews from the individual pieces as they came out so you can see my reactions to each as I came across them and the developing whole while it was still in the process of developing:- "Repetition Patterns" This is my first experience with one of Tanzer's books, and I couldn't be more thrilled. I love how Tanzer manages to squeeze so much description in without really seeming like he's doing it. The prose is still tight and clean, but more is there than it seems and there are some real poetic phrasings here and there. I love the way the stories proceed as well. Tanzer manages to be both hard hitting and mournfully yearning at the same time, the stories being extremely tender gut-shots. This is a marvelous short collection and I'm definitely going to check out more of Tanzer's work.- "So Different Now" Again Tanzer makes me nostalgic for a past that isn't mine while putting me in a present I'm not sure I want to be in, yet greedily don't want to look away from. I can't believe I missed that this was out there, only realizing there was a second volume when "After the Flood" dropped recently. I grabbed this one as soon as I realized, and "After the Flood" as well. And these stories only whet my appetite more for "After the Flood." They make me feel raw, not in execution (because they are definitely well crafted) but in the emotional state evoked while reading. Tanzer has some breathtaking endings in some of these as well, heavy gut shots there was no way I could see coming but might fight someone if they suggested it could be any other way. Bottom line? Heavy stories. Heavy and great. I'm already itching to dig into "After the Flood," but I'm going to sit and savor these ones a few days first. They deserve it.- "After the Flood" This is a marvelous finishing volume. It easily has as much emotional force as the other two volumes, but with something even more haunting about each of the stories. These stories could easily stand on their own, but it's so much more interesting to see the reflections and emanations between the stories of all three volumes as a whole. The best stuff in this volume though isn't something I can convey by description. It isn't that tangible, too subtle and delicate despite the simultaneous presence of that which is harsh and brutal in life. You really need to read it, and then you'll know.

Making the personal universal By Clayton Smith The magic of Ben Tanzer is that he has the uncanny ability to lay bare the quirks, secrets, and personal shames that we all possess but are too guarded to discuss. Never has his raw talent for the modern human condition been more apparent than it is in The New York Stories.All of these tales center around a fictional small town in upstate New York, the sort of unimpressive geographical black hole that you hate growing up in but don't ever seen quite able to escape. Maybe this collection speaks so loudly to me because I'm from a town just like Tanzer's fictional Two Rivers, New York, but I think the fundamental truth of the place and its people is rooted in all of us; we grow up thinking we know everything, and that everything is tragic, and we grow old learning that the tragedy is what we've made for ourselves.Tanzer's characters struggle to get by in a world they've created for themselves, dealing with bad decisions, worse reactions, and the very specific sort of ennui that you find in low-prospect small towns. Love and sex and trust and dependence and addiction and obsession are explored frankly, bluntly, in Tanzer's signature bare-it-all style that makes you want to cry with relief that yes, it's true, someone else out there has the same soul-wrenching sadness and worry that you work to keep hidden in your life. Tanzer's greatest talent is his ability to make the personal universal.He smartly builds his stories around a massive flood, a disaster born of "the storm of the century," and the flood is a striking metaphor for the self-destruction of the residents of Two Rivers.Tanzer is an extraordinary talent. The New York Stories is a perfect entry point for new readers looking to explore his work.

McCreesh I discovered Tanzer fairly early on, but not early enough to catch most of these stories when they were first published. The collector in me loves it when a press collects loads of early, often out-of-print work into a new book – and The New York Stories does just that, and does it gorgeously.When read all together, the patchwork Tanzer weaves can finally be truly appreciated. It reminds me of Don Carpenter's The Class of '49 – which, if you know Carpenter, is high praise. Tanzer's characters weave in and out here, and the fictional town of Two Rivers very much becomes a character of its own. As for the people – they run the gamut from fully broken or insane to pensive and almost content. Their relationships are laid bare as fragile and tenuous arrangements, forever just a twist (or storm) from breaking apart.And it's that edge, the intimacy of love as it is tested, that truly powers the collection. Page after page the book is fraught with the tension of potential heartbreak, and doubt, with infidelity, with mortality...making The New York Stories all the more immediate, approachable, and human.

105 of 109 people found the following review helpful. AT LAST, LIE GROUPS & ALGEBRAS I CAN UNDERSTAND!! By Reed B Wickner This book focuses on matrix Lie groups and Lie algebras, and their relations and representations. This makes things a bit simpler, and not much is lost, because most of the interesting Lie groups & algebras are (isomorphic to)groups & algebras of matrices. I believe that most mathematicians are more concerned with impressing their colleagues with their subtlety and erudition than they are in making a clear, simple and comprehensible presentation. This is mitigated by the publisher's insistence that the first 10 pages be clear to a mid-level undergraduate so the book will sell. So I usually get stuck at page 10 in those books. This book is clear (to me) at least to page 168 (as far as I have progressed). There are even appendices on finite groups and key aspects of linear algebra. After introducing the classical groups and their algebras and the exponential map relating one to the other, the author introduces representations. He then details the representations of sl(2,C) and sl(3,C) (a.k.a. the complexifications of su(2) and su(3), respectively). By going through the details on these [with their Cartan subalgebras, weights, roots, Weyl groups, etc.], the general theory that follows is more palatable than it might otherwise be. Little rigor is sacrificed (if I am qualified to judge that - probably not). A few proofs are left out, but not many. Another virtue of this book is that there are very few mistakes. I have trouble distinguishing an author's typos from my thinkos, so this is a particularly impotant feature of this book. I very highly recoommend this book to anyone who does not already know the subject; it would be a perfect first book on this area. This book is really written with the student in mind. As a "shade - tree" mathematician, I need all the help I can get in understanding this difficult subject. Hall has done the best job I have seen at making the theory accessible without sacrificing rigor.

Companion book suggestion By Johan Nystrom This is an excellent book on a difficult subject.When learning Group Theory from the viewpoint of physics, one can miss out completely on some of the important mathematical aspects.Halls book solved that problem for me. But, I can imagine that it also works in the reverse;If one studies Group Theory from a pure mathematical viewpoint, one can miss out on a multitude of computational techniques and some important results.The paramount example of Halls book is the handling of the representations of the group SU(3).To gain even more insight into that group one can use Halls book together with Quantum Mechanics: Symmetries.There one can see "Groups, Algebras and their Representaions in Action", especially SU(3),in numerous solved excercises and problems displaying a multitude of relevant computational techniques.The two books begin at about the same point (groups, algebras, representations, the exponential map),and end at about the same point (classification of the classical groups).Halls book provides the correct mathematical setting and Greiners book the solved examples.The two books together add up to a lot of value.The pure math student can easily ignore the physics in Greiners book and pick up some new things in representation theory,such as Cartans criterion for irreducibility, derivations of dimension formulas for representations, etc.Meanwhile, the pure physics student should probably avoid trying to learn Group Theory from physics books (including Greiners).There is a lot of confusion in the physics books as to what is what. Groups, algebras, representations and invariant subspaces are constantly mixed up.In conclusion, one benifits from a math book, and a large collection of examples. Halls book and Greiners book work surprisingly well together.

Excellent introduction into the theory of Lie Groups By Richard Brian Hall's book is a welcome addition to the material available for the study of Lie Groups. This book in particular provides a good basis for the study of Lie Groups without getting caught up in the study of Manifold Theory. The book is easy to access, requiring only a basic background in Modern and Linear Algebra and has many applications pertaining both to mathematics and physics.
