Simple ingredients and easy to make recipes.I loved all that I have made so far. There is one recipe that does not sound to appetizing and that is roasted Pig Stomach, I won't be trying that one for sure. Psss, don't forget to make yourself a gallon of Root beer, that's right I said homemade root beer.I love the pictures and the stories in this cookbook this is one to keep one your shelf and buy for great friends as well.I have to say this was a 4 star cookbook and I plan to share it with my friends.I was given a copy of this cookbook by the publisher for my honest review.

Gather Around the Amish Table By Shelf-Esteem Gather Around the Amish Table entered our house amidst screams of "I want to help" from both of our children. Cooking is a family affair in our household and I never run low on sous chefs or taste testers. Upon opening this cookbook we discovered there would be no shortage of recipes to try. So, with grocery list in hand, we began our evaluation of Lucy Leid's collection of Amish favorites.Appetizing images of sweet and savory dishes appear every few pages with a smattering of Amish community photographs sprinkled intermittently. As far as the organization and layout, recipes are grouped into one of ten categories, listed in the table of contents, and quick referenced using the index. We found the ingredients clearly listed, however the instructions were at times over simplified. "Mix everything together" works well for some recipes, but for others a little more direction would have been welcomed. For instance, when we made Gourmet Eggs the baking pan dimensions were absent which resulted in our need for a longer baking time. The opposite was true for our Vegetable Loaf which reached the proper cooking temperature 40 minutes faster than prescribed. Another thought I had after making (12 cups) of Peanut Butter Granola, was that it would have been nice if storage tips were included. Something like "the best way to store it," or "how long it keeps" would have been helpful.TabsCookbookIn all we've prepared 8 recipes - 3 breakfast, 1 bread, 2 meats, and 2 cookie. The Gourmet Eggs and Chocolate Chip Cookie recipes were our favorites. Others were met with mixed reviews, but given the book has numerous contributors we will continue trying the recipes. Before I conclude, I'd like to give my impressions of the non-food related elements of this cookbook. As a rough estimate, I would say nearly 1/3 of the recipes have a paragraph or more accompanying them from the contributor. Most appear to be memories the various authors associate with a particular dish: how they came to possess the recipe, who they've made it for, cooking mishaps, and even special occasions they've prepared it for. With the narratives focused on the dishes, they didn't shed much light on life in the Amish community as I had hoped. Still, they were interesting and a some were rather humorous. In all, Gather Around the Amish Table earned a good - 3/5 rating.I received this book free as a member of the Litfuse blogger program. I was not required to write a positive review. Down home recipes, gorgeous photos and delightful side stories By thoughtsfrommillstreet I've collected cookbooks since I was a teenager (over 50 years, but who is counting) and my family always teases me when I read them cover to cover like novels. I sift through the recipes, deciding which ones I will try. While I will look at almost any cookbook, I truly treasure those packed with "down home" family recipes, with maybe a slight twist of originality. I do love those community cookbooks packed with side comments and inspirational messages from the cooks. Lucy Leid has gathered together both recipes and stories from Amish communities around the country. For those who don't know much about the Amish, this book is a warm introduction with some great basic recipes to boot. I live in a rural area with a strong Amish presence so I have been able to purchase many Amish cookbooks over the years as families, schools, and communities frequently put together cookbooks to raise money. Although GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE may have fewer recipes than some of those, it is a more professional, colorful publication. The recipe for oven baked chicken caught my eye when I first looked through the cookbook. A mixture of butter, crushed cornflakes and Parmesan cheese coats the chicken which then bakes in the oven. Mmm, I thought. I used to make something similar but haven't in a long time. It was so easy and good. I've been making apple crisp since my early 4-H days but when we were having company for Saturday night supper a few weeks ago, I decided to use the recipe in GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE instead of digging out my old, battered recipe. Pretty similar except the Amish version adds a dash of nutmeg. Made with Melba apples, freshly picked in Bayfield Co, WI, this dessert was a hit. Basic cakes, filling casseroles, healthy soups, and even made from scratch puddings and custards. This book is chocked full of tried and true recipes that have been making families smile around the dinner table for years. GATHER AROUND THE TABLE would make a special gift for anyone interested in this more simple culture, the people themselves, and of course, their favorite foods. I recieved a copy of this title from LitFuse for my honest review
