Playing Custer is a novel narrated from varying points of view and time, illuminating personal and political events leading up to the death of General George Armstrong Custer. The historic events are framed by the story of two men from the late twentieth century—one white and one Native American—who travel together to the annual reenactment of the battle at the Little Bighorn National Monument battlefield. Chatting during their journey, the two reenactors discuss their obsessions, personal ambitions, and failures of nerve. Interwoven with their progress toward the battle are narrations, journal entries, and first-person viewpoints from many others who were actually involved in the historic events. Soldiers and scouts for the cavalry; Sioux, Crow, and Cheyenne witnesses; and wives and daughters all offer their versions of “truth,” establishing a texture and depth of irony, humor, and tragic meaning to those modern Americans driven to attempt to “play Custer.” This year—a special anniversary of the real battle—they are suddenly chosen for crucial new roles. This time, they will play Custer and Crazy Horse. All builds toward the real and reenacted final moments on the battlefield of Custer’s last stand.

I have read several books and articles about him and even watched a movie about him. This book is a unique way to present George Custer to the readers and I liked it a lot. I enjoyed the various points of view and that gave me a lot to ponder. The author does an extremely good job in hiss presentation and I would recommend this book to any one who is interested in George Custer and the Battle of Little Big Horn. I have been very impressed with this book.

I have read several of Mr. Duff's books, but this one took me completely by surprise. The characters came to life on the page and I was especially interested in the way the author wrote a book mainly about men, but when Custer's wife, Libbie,"talked" about her part of the story, I was astounded a man could get inside a woman's head so completely and have the reader feel as though he/she knew Libbie and could relate to her life.I was also surprised at the level of interest I had for the big battle scene. The involvement in every bullet shot and every arrow slung made me think I was actually out there with the soldiers and Indians and felt compassion for both. The reenactment scenes and the dialogue accompanying them came alive and piqued my interest in other historical figures similar to Custer. I highly recommend this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Duff builds a complex picture of many kinds of transformation, one puzzle piece at a time. By Texasbooklover Playing Custer: a novelGerald DuffTexas Christian University PressPaperback, 978-0875656069, 256 pgs., $22.95May 18, 2015The West does not need to explore its myths much further; it has already relied on them too long. - WALLACE STEGNER (page vi)Playing Custer is the newest historical fiction title from award-winning author and native Texan, Gerald Duff. Employing multiple narratives from 1876 and 2001, Duff brings us the voices of the United State 7th Cavalry and the Sioux and Cheyenne, from what is popularly known as Custer’s Last Stand, and the contemporary voices of the historical reenactors who converge on the Greasy Grass, also known as The Little Bighorn, each June. Duff builds a complex picture of many kinds of transformation, one puzzle piece at a time.Waymon Needler, a home economics teacher, and Mirabeau Lamar Sylestine, a member of the Alabama-Coushatta and a computer software specialist, both from East Texas, have made the drive to Montana together for several years. We go with them on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the battle. Needler and Sylestine have small parts in the program until a series of unfortunate events finds them called upon to play Custer and Crazy Horse, respectively.Duff’s characters are diverse, representative, and well-drawn. General George Armstrong Custer is here, as well as other officers and enlisted men from Ireland, Germany, and Italy, to name a few. Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse are here, too, as well as the Crow and Ree scouts who worked for the US Army. The backstories provided the historical characters are detailed and interesting. Duff has done a particularly beautiful job channeling the women of this story, though they are few, namely Libby Custer and Monahsetah of the Cheyenne. Monahsetah is the personification of dignity and courage without becoming the stereotype of the Noble Savage."If you’re an Indian dealing with the man, don’t try to get intellectual, now, or truculent, and whatever you do, don’t launch into a logical argument about some point of disagreement. White folks don’t want to hear that kind of garbage from an Indian. But say something that smacks of the mystical or uses the concept of the heart as representative of a knowledge not subject to intellectual inquiry, and baby, you’re no longer an Indian whining about rights and dispossession, you’re a Native American in touch with the immeasurable."Duff moves smoothly between speech patterns, rhythms, and vocabulary of the present and the past, of divergent ethnicities and origins, and social stations. From 1876:“I hope that bunch of Indians will try to fight like white troops, and not just swarm like a bunch of yellow jackets when you stir up their nest.”“Yellow jackets?” I said. “What do you mean by that?”“Wasps,” Davis said. “Stinging wasps all coming at you in a wad so you can’t tell one from another. The kind of swarm I used to see back in Virginia when I was a young boy looking to get into mischief, poking at something I didn’t have enough sense to be scared of. They couldn’t hurt me, I figured. I can outrun a swarm of wasps if I have to.”“We’re all mounted here in the Seventh Cavalry,” I said. “And we’re trained to fight as a unit. We’re stronger together than a mere count of numbers would indicate. We are the fingers of a hand, clenched to make one strong instrument with which to strike. A fist. Wasps would see us and scatter, and so will the Sioux and Cheyenne."From 2001:“Well, it’s a dramatic reenactment, Eagle Beak,” I said. “It’s not the thing itself. What matters is the idea of the thing, not the thing itself.”“That’s the way you white men live. Not with the truth, but with an imitation of it, and that satisfies you right down to the ground.”Duff is also adept at stirring description. This passage gave me chills – Crazy Horse makes his move and shoots the gap in the 7th Cavalry’s defensive line:"It was then, as I leaned my own body to the right in sympathy with the line of troopers, hoping to witness the joining of the end of that body of my men with the left end of the company to our right, that the event transpired which cut off the success of our maneuver. A single horseman, a savage dressed only in a species of animal skin about his loins, bearing a great number of spots of white paint all over his body, along with a great smear of red and yellow coloring his face itself, suddenly burst into view just at the flank of the company which my men had been straining ranks toward. He leaned over, this apparition with long light-colored hair streaming unconstrained down his back, and began swinging a long-handled club at the head of the trooper just at the end of the company which my men were struggling to reach."There are almost as many motivations in this battle as there are participants: patriotism, religion, duty, orders, revenge, blood lust. The reader’s task is the same as that of the reenactors: not to view these characters with modern eyes. Duff points out our (continuing) insistence on viewing people seemingly unlike ourselves as Other.“Mirabeau,” I said, being jocular, “you are looking so good, my fine young warrior. Give me a high five.” At that, he turned and gave me a look that had about it more authenticity than any other bit of acting business I had ever seen on the banks of the Little Bighorn up until then and since that day. It said, that look of intense concentration did, not “I’m about to kill you, white man,” or “Just keep standing there until I get my stone club unlimbered,” but instead it asked a simple question: are you a human being? Are you and I of the same species of mammal, or am I being talked to by a porcupine suffering from brain damage? Mirabeau, or as I should say, in his present manifestation, Eagle Beak, was clearly seeing before him not a member of his reenactment group from Annette, Texas, and not a fellow inhabitant of Coushatta County in a different country. No, he was in the presence of maybe a talking raccoon, or a possum that stood on its hind legs and walked around like a man, or it could be a coyote that wore eyeglasses. He was in the Indian equivalent of purgatory. Or maybe the main dining room of a giant Chuck E. Cheese.""I never told Mirabeau what I had realized on that day those several years ago, there on the Montana prairie. Nor have I ceased to attempt to imagine a self for me other than my once and present and future one as I seek each June to escape the bounds which hold me. He didn’t need to know what an advantage he held over me, and I was certainly not going to admit to being a lesser creature than he, real or imagined. To let him know that would be to admit that what he thought about the nature of the Native American had at least some truth to it. They were different, I told myself, in strange ways, and that’s why we had had as a race to wipe them out and find ways to keep the remainder under close control. What else could we do as a people?"The plot of Playing Custer is original and well-executed. The pace is even though I was sometimes eager to get through the character’s backstories and return to the narrative. I’d been curious as to how Duff was going to wrap this up. The ending is satisfying as well as surprising. The research required is evident in the meticulous detail. Duff has evidently set himself the goal of the reenactors: “stringent authenticity.”I’ve come to understand that all historical fiction is speculative fiction. Duff has provided us fine speculation. As the author points out on the dedication page, history is fiction. And written by the winners.

Language Notes Text: Spanish Original Language: English

About the Author Herman Melville was an American novelist, poet, and lecturer best known for his classic novel Moby-Dick, as well as for his short fiction "Bartleby, the Scrivener," and the unfinished "Billy Budd, Sailor." Educated as a teacher and later as an engineer, Melville s writing was heavily influenced by his time aboard the whaling ship Acushnet, and his month-long captivity by Typee natives on Nuka Hiva island. Although Melville experienced success early in his writing career, public indifference to his masterpiece, Moby-Dick, resulted in waning attention, and his work was almost entirely disregarded by the time of this death in 1891. Melville s work experienced a revival in the early twentieth century, and he is now considered one of the pre-eminent American writers of his time. He is also one of the most-studied novelists, and was the first writer to be collected and published by the Library of America.

A self assured restaurant owner questions her need for independence after an event that turns her little world around. A theology teacher faces off with the town's notoriously evil good old boy. A fisherman ponders his paternal qualities with the help of dinoflagellates and memories of his tragic childhood. With genteel grace or with an aggressive distaste for convention, the people of Summerland wrestle with life's curve balls and nature's fortitude in this collection of short stories by Jennifer Lynn McCarthy. In the third book from the Southern Gothic Now series, vibrant characters handle life with the weight of their background on their shoulders. Their sense of place and home instinctively informs their choices, often with funny and touching results. The people of Summerland are naive, flawed, sensitive, and authentic. They may come from the moneyed homes of the South or from the dark corners of the Appalachians, but they are all from "that neck of the woods," - that place of odd quirks, old traditions, new changes, and gritty determination.

Wonderful, Believable Stories By Nick Angelis You could hitchhike your way across the South, but it'd be much more economical to buy this book and immerse yourself in the rich lives of these characters and the towns they inhabit. Not recommended for the illiterate, because they can't read.

Growing Dark, by Kristopher Triana

Review GROWING DARK is Kristopher Triana's love letter to everything dark and spooky, whether it be nods to '80s horror movies or demon-haunted canyons...his knack for imagery makes this short story collection A MUST READ! --Rue MorgueTriana has a voice unmatched by other writers in his field. His short stories pack more punch than your average novel. Beware of this man's words, for they are dangerous and contagious. --Max Booth III, author of ToxicityTriana writes well, succinct and lean but with enough of an eye for detail... at times reminiscent of early Lansdale while sometimes toeing that chalk line that the splatter punks drew on the asphalt. --Ginger Nuts of Horror

About the Author Kristopher Triana is an author who specializes in horror and the macabre. Influenced as a child by B-movie poster art and late-night slasher fodder, he has been writing scary stories since his youth. Now a complete fanatic when it comes to the genre, he has been published in several anthologies and magazines.

He is also a professional dog trainer, an avid weightlifter, and a bit of a cowboy.

He lives in North Carolina with his wife.

'Growing Dark,' is predominantly horror - almost every story representing a different sub-genre; from demons to zombies to cannibals to crazies to ghosts. The stories that aren't horror are simply dark and haunting. Actually, dark and haunting is how I would describe nearly every story in this collection - and I mean that in a good way!Mr. Triana's writing style is reminiscent of Stuart O'Nan, with a cowboy twist. His stories are atmospheric, dark, moving, relatable, and often tragic in their own right. These are stories about simple, honest folks who remind us of ourselves or people we know - except with, you know, monsters and stuff! This collection, in my opinion, is so successful because it's terrifying on a very human level. On a side note, several of these stories take place in central Florida and Mr. Triana nails the towns to a tee - right down to the descriptions of the bulk of the people who live here. It's not all palm trees and sunshine and he knows it! "Video Express," in particular, hit me right in the feels with a heavy dose of nostalgia - both for the store and for 80s horror.Highly recommended!!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Damn good stuff! By Monkey K. Simian This is a great collection of short stories with a good mix of creature feature and dark psychological tales. My favorites were The Bone Orchid (a great horror-action piece that reminded me a lot of the weird western writings of Joe R. Lansdale), From the Storms, A Daughter (about a nonstop black rain that floods a New England town and the creepy, creepy things that move beneath its surface), Before the Boogeymen Come (a witty and charming tale with three very distinct characters/classes of monsters—reminding me a lot of a monstrous version of The Three Stooges!—that have to complete their mission before the Boogeymen are called in), and Video Express (a spot on love letter to the golden age of video store rentals). As a teen, I worked at a mom and pop video store and Triana nails it with such minute detail that it caused a wave of nostalgia to come crashing over me while reading his story. Now that, to me, is a sign of a damn good writer. I’ll be definitely checking out more stuff he releases in the future!

In a time where original works are few and far between it is refreshing to find such a collection of stories. The author has a great talent for bringing the characters to life and you will immerse yourself in them. The authors writing style is unique and exceptional with placing you in the world he has created. Before the Boogeymen Come is my favorite of the stories and I think it would make a great animated movie ( Are you listening Hollywood?). Most of the works are before their time and before shows like the walking dead ever aired. I found myself plowing through the stories quickly they were so outstanding.I loved the book so much I plan to get it for family and friends for Christmas this year. Like others who have reviewed this book it is truly worth the read and I look forward to new works by the author in the future.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Fettuccine with Prosciutto and Peas  *Chuck’s personal recipe   2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1⁄2 cup (21⁄2 oz/75 g) finely chopped yellow onion 4–6 thin slices prosciutto, cut into narrow strips 1 cup (8 fl oz/250 ml) heavy (double) cream Salt 2 cups (10 oz/315 g) shelled young, tender peas 1 lb (500 g) fresh or dried fettuccine 1⁄2 cup (2 oz/60 g) grated Parmesan cheese  *Makes 6 servings   Bring a large pot three-fourths full of water to a rolling boil over high heat.   Meanwhile, in a large sauté pan over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Add the onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the prosciutto and cream and simmer, stirring, for 3–4 minutes longer. Season with salt, remove from the heat, and keep warm.   Add 1tablespoon salt, the peas, and the pasta to the boiling water. (If using dried pasta, add the peas when the pasta is almost done.) Stir a few times to separate the pasta and keep it from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Cook, stirring once or twice, until al dente, about 2 minutes for fresh pasta or 8–10 minutes for dried, or according to the package directions.   Just before the pasta is ready, return the sauté pan to high heat. Drain the pasta, add it to the sauté pan, and toss briefly until well blended with the sauce. Transfer to a warmed serving bowl or individual plates and serve right away. Pass the Parmesan cheese at the table.

Marjorie sat on the door-step, shelling peas, quite unconscious what a pretty picture she made, with the roses peeping at her through the lattice work of the porch, the wind playing hide-and-seek in her curly hair, while the sunshine with its silent magic changed her faded gingham to a golden gown, and shimmered on the bright tin pan as if it were a silver shield. Old Rover lay at her feet, the white kitten purred on her shoulder, and friendly robins hopped about her in the grass, chirping "A happy birthday, Marjorie!"

Discover a new outlook on the process of life—and improve your health as a result In Intended Evolution, authors Dongxun and Bob Zhang introduce a different perspective on the theory of evolution: Life is not only selected by nature but intentionally interacts with it, learning how to better its future. They explain that applying this idea to generally accepted principles of biology can have startling results in your ability to affect your own health—and even your evolution. According to the theory of intended evolution, organisms gather information through sensory experience and use that knowledge to effect change in themselves and their environments. The authors propose that organisms use this saved information to make choices projected to enhance their survival. It is through experience, choices, and action, within a given environment, that life changes itself from moment to moment and determines what changes are needed for future generations. Because of humans’ unique ability to understand how our own evolution functions, we can effect changes within ourselves to influence and enhance our health and fitness, even to lengthen our lifespan.

By Lester Sawicki Evolution has an updated theory put forward in the new book, Intended Evolution: How Selection of Intelligence Guides Life Forward, by Dongxun and Bob Zhang. To begin with, the book's authors set the tone by not saying that Darwin's theory is inaccurate. It is just that Darwin and his theory of natural selection is evolving and needs to be updated because of, well…but...of course! Triple-I: Internal Intentional Intelligence. Before you buy the book you should know that Intended Evolution is not entirely based on researched data, but more on Dongxun Zhang's theory of and extrapolation on the process of evolution that is meant to update and not replace current theories of evolution. Both authors, Dongxun and Bob, believe that their restricted use of "theory" in the general sense may lead to potential insights into various areas of the biological sciences. They also clearly state that bias for Creationism or Intelligent Design is counterproductive to understanding the process behind modification of life-forms over time. The first few pages of the book quickly arouse the reader's interest when Dongxun and Bob Zhang reveal that they believe organisms can intentionally interact with nature in order to improve their own place in the universe. Later in the book they explain why to them it appears that today's world is safer with fewer threats from deadly predators and more comfortable, stable living spaces. This gives us as humans a unique historical opportunity to exercise our intelligence within a gym-like virtual environment in order to express self-modification for a longer healthier life span.At this point in the book you might be inclined to quickly turn through the pages, searching for clues to a method for longevity. Unfortunately, you will only be reminded by the authors that the book is but a framework of ideas for discussion on the "why" intended evolution happens and that there is no step-by-step guide as to the "how" of it. Dongxun did, however, briefly mention that he created a mind-body fitness class based in Austin Texas called Intended Evolution Fitness where specific exercises are taught to help you self-strategize a more favorable future existence filled with health and vigor. One of the more captivating chapters in the book is The Information Cycle. It describes a new outlook on evolution where an organism's Internal Intention to survive can, at times, drive it to shorten its own life span or sacrifice itself after reproducing offspring during periods of excessive external pressure, in order that its Knowledge Library stored in DNA be passed on to future generations for more rapid evolution. What is very, very interesting and thought provoking is how the authors simplified their theory of Intended Evolution into the makings of a card game. If I understand correctly, the process of evolution has an Information Cycle which is a sort of card table with a dealer, players, chips, and rules where the intention is to survive and prosper. The chips might be compared to an energy source, like wind, water, fossil, nuclear, or solar, which are traded in to bring about desired changes in one's life or even just to maintain your current status. If the theory of the game holds true, no matter the cards we are dealt in life, there appears to be infinite possibilities for positive growth although certain handicaps might prevent some from staying in the game long. The authors explain in so many words that, for the better players, leaving the game early is an option and not a detriment. At this point of the presentation, men with priestly training cleansing for doomsday might miss a heartbeat if they are not following the staged play with scientific detachment.Fortunately, for those that crap out early, there is a Life Cycle Strategy whereby their selected reproductive offspring can continue to play the losing hand while adding to or exchanging their own dealt cards, In this way the new players can continue to build upon their inheritance and increase the extended family's fortune in chips. And no one can ever win the entire pot.The book is not clear on whether, over time, there are any actual losers or winners in the game. It only says that organisms evolve to become better players at it, with no beginning or end point.Regardless of how one subjectively feels about navigating the elusive cycle of life, Dongxun and Bob have successfully laid out a basic framework for why the process of life works through the use of a simple card game and other friendly, easy to visualize symbols and comparisons. Who would think that the extremely complex nature of evolution could be transmitted within a mere 201 pages of text? Yet, the book does just that by using a soft approach to a hard subject. Not by challenging the reader's subjective perceptions, but by inviting him into the discussion.By diving deep into the Information Level the authors managed to bring to the general public, because that is where meaningful intellectual change on the subject must occur for the human race to thrive, a brilliant, precise, and yet colorful detailed account of a new outlook on the process of life.Intended Evolution might become a real game changer but the book will require more than one push-up to assimilate. It can be a bit tedious to read with its new ideas and terminology that try to describe why the external environment interacts with the will to survive in order to develop intelligent and novel ways of living. The descriptive print under the pictures is too tiny to read, and there could be a few more pictographs or brief outlines inserted between key paragraphs to help understand and visualize the concepts presented. And I think the book would be better served with more information on the unique feature of a "panda's thumb"? to help understand that comparison. It helps to keep in mind that the book is only one condensed segment of information on evolution and, if I understood the authors correctly, rereading it in order to repeat its pattern of ideas will have long term benefits making its basic principles easier to use by life's driving force for accelerated self-growth.In summary, the theory of Intended Evolution is a significant contribution to current theories of evolution. Dongxun and Bob Zhang believe there are three basic factors in the evolutionary process and that the organism's genome consists of five characteristics that intentionally interact within the process. Dongxun's idea of the Information Cycle helps reduce the complex nature of intelligent process into an easy to comprehend system of input, storage, analysis, and output which is well thought out and succinctly described in the book.Intended Evolution is a theory, both novel and exciting. The theory, that we can affect the future of our own evolution, is open for discussion. Its basis is perception, intelligence, and potential action. The book is sold as a limited edition signed hard cover and as a retail paperback, both in an easy to read and understand format. In any event, the Zhang father and son team have, at the least, brought a new game of life into town. You are invited to sit at the table and play your hand at it. If you fancy their idea that "(we)…can affect the future of our own evolution," then learning the rules to the game and why it is even being played is well worth the book's price of admission.

A New Approach to the Theory of Evolution By Nancy Famolari Darwin's theory of evolution explains much about how humans and other animals change over time. However, even Darwin felt that his theory was incomplete. He wrote that he was convinced that Natural selection was the main but not exclusive means of modification. Lamarck, a contemporary of Darwin's had a theory that internal factors were responsible for modification. He believed that modification was based on what an organism's environment required and how the organism related to that environment.Although not espousing Lamarck's theory, the present book stresses the importance of internal factors, particularly in the evolution of humans. The authors believe that today's environment for humans is safer than in the past, and therefore humans have more opportunity to effect changes in themselves. His chapters on why we die and on mind-body medicine are interesting in this context. The book, although presenting complex concepts, is relatively easy to read. The authors use analogies, such as a card game for how the information cycle allows for internal processes to bring about changes and help the organism maintain it's present status. It also helps to have some passing familiarity with information theory, although the authors do a good job of explaining the concepts. The concepts presented are not a way to negate Darwin's theory. They are rather a thought provoking set of ideas designed to enhance the theory. I recommend this book. While it may not be factually accurate, in fact it is based on theory not research, it is well worth reading for the ideas.I reviewed this book for Net Galley.
