Note: Part I http://dld.bz/dBGpT can be found here. Part III here: http://dld.bz/dZq9T. PREFACE Charity was finally starting to feel secure in the love she and Jag shared -- until his brother dropped a bombshell that shook the foundation of what they shared. She started to question all over again why Jag would be interested in her, when his first wife was so different? Shaylene was white and skinny? She was curvy and black? And he’d obviously loved this woman; had grieved her for years. So why had he clung to her so quickly? Was he tired of being alone? She’d seen the devastation in his eyes as he recounted what his brother had revealed, in essence bringing his dead wife, Shaylene, back to life to impact their relationship as if she'd been a living, breathing entity walking the earth. Had Jag every really gotten over her? Would he ever? Would Charity always be second in his heart to his first wife? Charity realized that until she knew the answer to these questions, she’d never be able to fully commit to him. Then she buried her face in her hands at the irony of it all. He’d just told her that he didn’t even know if he ever wanted to get married again … and here she was trying to decide if she could ever commit to him. How much had changed in just 24 hours. ### Jag thought he’d cut his family out of his life for good when he married Shaylene all those years ago. And now, he had a second chance at love. He’d found the kind of happiness with Charity that no man deserves twice in a lifetime. … And twice in a lifetime his family threatened to destroy it. *** “Trust me Jag, you never quite know the woman you’re sleeping with.” “You vindictive bastard! After years of not laying eyes on you, what makes you think you have a prayer in hell of me believing anything that comes out of your lying, scheming mouth?” “Because I can prove it,” his brother said, "... every word of it.” Jag felt his blood streaming through his veins like a comet streaking through the sky. Even though he hadn’t seen his older brother in years, he knew him well enough to know when he was lying, and something told him he wasn’t lying about this. But it couldn’t be true. It just couldn’t. If it was … sweet creator of the heavens, help him if it was! Jace saw the look in his brother’s deep-set, grey-green eyes. Even though he was older by almost six years, Jag had always been the more studious, more serious, more focused one. It was why their father had pegged him to be the controlling heir to the Hollander fortune – that is, before Jag had married Shaylene. Jace saw the war raging in his brother. Jag didn’t want to believe what he was saying, but some part of him knew that he had to; that he had too much riding on it not to. “You’d better be able to prove every word, or you’re a dead man,” Jag threatened. ### Charity sprinted to the front door, blood on her hands and the lavender cotton night top she wore. She tried to open the door, her bloody hands slipping on the knob. She quickly ran them down the side of her matching lavender night shorts to dry them so she could grip the door better. Finally, it opened. She pointed at Jag. “His head,” was all she said before two firemen rushed passed her. Within seconds, they were working on Jag. In the meantime, police officers pelted her with questions. What happened? How long ago? Jag’s name? Age? How much did he have to drink? Over how many hours? The rapid-fire questions kept coming. She knew Jag had gone to see is father earlier and all she could think was, "What the hell had gone on?" ### Will Jag’s powerful family destroy his and Charity’s newfound happiness before it has a chance to fully bloom? The secret his brother reveals guts everything Jag has believed in for the last 17 years, and puts his relationship with Charity in a line of fire neither one of them is sure it can survive.

Jace a Distraction By TJ7109md While this was suppose to focus on the next phase of Jag and Charity's relationship, I was completely distracted by the slime ball Jace. What a turd. While it takes two to tango (one unfortunately not around to give her side of her story), there was no reason for Jace to reveal the history of his brother's deceased wife. I can only imagine (hope) that the next installment allows Jace to redeem himself in some way. I was so floored by his revaluation that what transpired between Jag and Charity was very anti-climatic.

A little home improvement can go a long way…   Jesse Oliver was a medic in Afghanistan, but back home in Pine Mountain he’s happy to switch gears as the Double Shot bar’s new sous chef. When his apartment floods and his old Army buddy offers the family’s dilapidated lake house as temporary quarters, Jesse thinks a little remodeling on the creaky duplex sounds like a fair return favor. That’s before he sets eyes on the gorgeous woman moving into the other side of the cabin—and discovers she’s his buddy’s kid sister, a.k.a totally off limits.   Kat McMarrin has fought hard for her space, and she’s not too interested in sharing it. Of course, her job as a physical therapist means she won’t see much of Jesse, even if he’s a few thin floorboards away—unless she seeks him out. And with his sculpted body and slow-burn gaze, she might be tempted. Maybe the fixer-upper projects she has planned for the cabin will keep her mind off him. Or maybe her instincts to strip the place down will get out of hand…

Just One Taste (Pine Mountain), by Kimberly Kincaid

About the Author Kimberly Kincaid writes contemporary romance that splits the difference between sexy and sweet. When she's not sitting cross-legged in an ancient desk chair known as "The Pleather Bomber", she can be found practicing obscene amounts of yoga, whipping up anything from enchiladas to éclairs in her kitchen, or curled up with her nose in a book. Kimberly is a USA Today best-selling author and 2016 and 2015 RWA RITA finalist who lives (and writes!) by the mantra that food is love. She resides in Virginia with her wildly patient husband and their three daughters. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Delightful read By pw reader Kimberly Kincaid reminds me of Nora Roberts. She can take an everyday happening such as yard work and make it interesting. That is exactly what she has done again in Just One Taste. This Pine Mountain novella is an excellent addition to the series. Even though it does not have the danger that Fire Me Up had, it is still a remarkable read.Seeing inside of veteran Jesse’s head as he contemplates his self-worth is heart tugging, to say the least. However, the story remains flirty and lighthearted. Kat, with her positive Karma, is just what this lonely man needs. It is easy to tell why he fell for this upbeat nonconformist. Ms. Kincaid has created two characters that fit together perfectly, yin to yang. While only a few glimpses of characters from past books, I found it nonetheless to be an enjoyable visit back to Pine Mountain. It is easily a stand-alone read.Copy provided by the publisher through Net Galley for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sweet novella & great addition to series. Kimberly never fails to delight & touch our hearts. By Amy Valentini Kat and Jesse are two of kind…neither are looking for love, a relationship, or commitment. Both carry insecurities as baggage and both seek to carve out a place of their own where the past won’t hurt so much. When Jesse needs a place to stay after a major leak in his apartment, his Army buddy Gabe, who is also Kat’s brother, offers him shelter at the duplex lake house recently inherited by Kat and Gabe. Seeing that she lived in the same building of the flood, Kat decides take up residence at the duplex as well only didn’t say anything to Gabe. She hadn’t planned to share the space with anyone, especially a good-looking guy with a body she wishes she could stop looking at but simply enjoy the peace and quiet, and work on much needed renovations. Finally, they decide to work together on the renovations and find they enjoy it, and eventually each other. The heat created between these two starts to bring about a hot glow, which far outshines any newly polished wood. There’s nothing better than a story based on small town characters that always seem to know everyone else’s business, and Kimberly creates this atmosphere better than anyone I know. Her characters are people I would love to know in real life and they always manage to touch my heart. Jesse and Kat are two such characters. Jesse carries so much angst, guilt, and regret after his time in Afghanistan on top of the wounds embedded typically in a child of a drug addict. You feel his pain as if it’s your own and Kimberly handles it wonderfully. Kat is a typical Army brat who is used to never staying in one place for too long and yearns for just that. She wants stability, to be dug in, and a place she can call her own, and home. These two people are so alike and yet so different, you can’t help but want them to get together. They butt heads…Kat being the butt-r more than the butt-e but in the end, they help each other overcome the obstacles that keep their hearts closed off, and come together for once they get a taste of togetherness, there’s no turning back because JUST ONE TASTE is not enough. Thank goodness.I highly recommend this sweet, sassy, steamy, and as usual for Kimberly Kincaid, deliciously sexy novella very much in the fashion of, and a great addition to, the Pine Mountain series.***eARC provided by publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unscripted review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good Novella! By LJT I really liked Just One Taste by Kimberly Kincaid. This novella falls between book four and five of the Pine Mountain series, and it is well-written, hot and sexy. The small town of Pine Mountain comes to life once again with the love story of former military medic and sous chef, Jesse Oliver, and physical therapist Kat McMarrin. Jesse grew up in the area, while Kat lived in many places due to her father's army career. Gabe, Kat's older brother, is one of Jesse's buddies from the army.Jesse and Kat live in the same apartment building and only know each other in passing. So when their respective apartments get flooded, they need to find some temporary housing while their building is being renovated. Gabe offers to let Jesse stay in his family's run-down lake house, in exchange for sprucing it up a little. Unbeknownst to both Jesse and Gabe, Kat has already settled in.Jesse and Kat are very attracted to each other and living together only amplifies their mutual desire. Fixing up the house becomes their favorite pastime, and as a result, their new friendship evolves into much more.Whew, I needed a wet cloth after reading the scorching sex scene Ms. Kincaid crafted, and the build-up of sexual tension only added to the heat. Jesse and Kat are likeable and charming characters that kept me captivated throughout the story. Their banter is lively, in addition to being honest and flirty. Ms. Kincaid packs a lot of punch into this well designed novella, and I was cheering for Jesse and Kat to become a couple. If you are looking for a quick, engaging romance, then spend a little time in Pine Mountain.Complimentary copy provided by the author via NetGalley.

"This again," said the Bacteriologist, slipping a glass slide under the microscope, "is a preparation of the celebrated Bacillus of cholera—the cholera germ." The pale-faced man peered down the microscope. He was evidently not accustomed to that kind of thing, and held a limp white hand over his disengaged eye. "I see very little," he said. "Touch this screw," said the Bacteriologist; "perhaps the microscope is out of focus for you. Eyes vary so much. Just the fraction of a turn this way or that."

About the Author Herbert George "H.G." Wells (21 September 1866 – 13 August 1946) was a British author, now best known for his work in the science fiction genre. He was also a prolific writer in many other genres, including contemporary novels, history, politics and social commentary, even writing text books and rules for war games. Sozaeva H G Wells wrote and published this book of short stories in 1895; the first book he published, if I remember correctly. The writing style is typical Wells - just like he was sitting in front of you telling you a tale - and the stories themselves are quite entertaining. The topics range from an Anarchist set to destroy London by stealing a vial of cholera bacilla (the title story) to a man describing his time on a deserted island and how he hatched out an egg that had been preserved for 400 years. I think my favorite was the taxidermist story, just because it was really twisted :-) Give this book a try - it's a great introduction to the writings of a classic author of truly tremendous standing.

Excellent collection of tales By Steven Wilber I really enjoyed this collection of 15 tales which range from a different way of looking at every day events, to high adventure (complete with buried treasure), mystery, magic, and science fiction. There is something for everyone in this collection. These tales show imagination and all are beautifully written in Wells' classical style. One of H.G. Wells' biggest strengths is his ability to paint a picture with words. The reader is very much able to visualize what is going on, whithout being told every single detail.A must read collection for fans of H.G. Wells and classic SciFi alike.Personal favorites in this collection include "The Lord of the Dynamos", "Trough A Window", and "The Treasure in the Forest".

Early Collection Of Stories From Wells By Dave_42 Technically, "Select Conversations With An Uncle" which was published earlier in 1895 was Wells' first collection of stories, but the stories from that collection have largely been forgotten, while this collection, "The Stolen Bacillus and Other Incidents", contains a few stories which have long been remembered as early classics. The fourth of four books published in 1895, this collection contains 15 works of short fiction which were originally published between December of 1893, and March of 1895, mostly in "Pall Mall Budget" (or "Pall Mall Gazette"), but there is one story which was published originally in "Black and White" and one from "The St. James Gazette".The collection opens with "The Stolen Bacillus", a short story which can definitely be considered science fiction. In this an unnamed visitor of a Bacteriologist preys on the Bacteriologists ego to boast about the dangerous strains of bacteria he has on hand. The visitor turns out to be an anarchist who steals a vial with bacteria to use as a weapon, resulting in a chase, with a surprise ending. Published originally in "The Pall Mall Budget" on June 21st of 1894, this story predicts the fears of terrorists using biological weapons. The next story is "The Flowering of the Strange Orchid", another science fiction story, in which a man (Winter-Wedderburn) is tired of having an uneventful life and purchases some orchids from a collector who died, one of which is a very unusual specimen and provides him with an event in his life which he so desperately wanted. Published on August 2nd of 1894 in "The Pall Mall Budget", this story is an early example of using a previously unknown species as subject-matter.Next up is "In The Avu Observatory", which was published on August 9th of 1894 in "The Pall Mall Budget". This story, like the one before uses an unusual species as subject-matter. In this case it is a large bat-like creature which attacks an astronomer's assistant during a night when he is alone making observations."The Triumphs Of A Taxidermist" was published on March 3rd of 1894, and unlike the previous stories this one is not really science fiction. Here it is a narrator telling of a conversation he had with a Taxidermist, who admitted he had created "new species" in order to satisfy his clients."A Deal In Ostriches" was published on December 20th of 1894 in "The Pall Mall Budget". This story is also not science fiction, but it is a clever story (again told by a taxidermist, but not clear if it is meant to be the same one) about how an Ostrich was worth three hundred pounds."Through A Window", published in "Black and White" on August 25th, 1894 is like an early version of "Rear Window". Here we have a man (Bailey) who is immobilized due to an injury who watches a manhunt through his window."The Temptation of Harringay" was published in "The St. James Gazette" on February 9th of 1895. This fantasy story is about an artist who is desperate to paint a subject he has created in his mind, but who cannot get it right. The Devil comes to him and tries to buy the artist's soul with the promise of a few masterpieces."The Flying Man" was published in December of 1893 in "The Pall Mall Gazette". This is a story told from the point of view of a lieutenant who is explaining how he gained a reputation among the natives as "a flying man"."The Diamond Maker" was published on August 16th of 1894 in "The Pall Mall Budget". In this science fiction story, the narrator relates the tale of a man who has invented a means of making his own diamonds."Æpyornis Island" was published on December 27th of 1894 in "The Pall Mall Budget". Similar to the two stories earlier, this one again uses an unusual species as subject-matter, though in this case the story is much better thought out and developed. Here the narrator tells the story of how he found the bones of an Æpyornis.Next up is my personal favorite in the book, "The Remarkable Case of Davidson's Eyes", which was published in "The Pall Mall Budget" on March 28th of 1895. In this story, the title character (Davidson), after a lightning strike, is not able to see what is in front of him, but instead sees a tropical scene. Over time he eventually recovers, but later he meets someone who tells him a story which describes what he had seen perfectly."The Lord of the Dynamos" was published on September 6th, 1894, in "The Pall Mall Budget". This is another good story, about a poor foreign laborer who comes to worship the large Dynamo where he works."The Hammerpond Park Burglary" is a clever story about a thief (Teddy Watkins) who is trying to steal Lady Aveling's jewels. It was published originally in "The Pall Mall Budget" on July 5th of 1894."A Moth - Genus Novo" was published in "The Pall Mall Budget" on March 28th, of 1895. This is another good story about two rival scientists who have a professional feud, which is ended by the untimely death of one of them. The other then is tormented by a new species of Moth which he is unable to capture, and which nobody else is able to see.The collection closes with "The Treasure In The Forest", which was published in "The Pall Mall Budget" on August 23rd of 1894. This is the story of two men (Evans and Hooker) who overhear a discussion of a treasure, and then make the mistake of trying to rush ahead and recover it first. This is far from the best collection of Wells' short stories, but it is interesting because you can see some of his development as a writer between the earliest stories in this collection, and those which were written later on. This is true even though it isn't even two years between the publication of the first and last stories. Though some of these stories would be considered speculative fiction, many of them are fairly standard short stories.

The Violet Bakery Cookbook, by Claire Ptak

Review "Unlike so many baking and pastry books, which are merely eye candy, this one includes nourishing and intriguing recipes like Loganberry and Geranium Jam; Sweet Potato, Coconut, Date and Rye Muffins; and Roasted Quince. Its homespun aesthetic will make this a fixture on your kitchen counter."—Georgia Pellegrini, The Wall Street Journal "While the recipes in her book are unusual and inventive, they’re also incredibly tasty."—Cree LeFavor, New York Times "Violet Bakery promises to be a doozy: at her uber-popular London bakery, pastry chef Claire Ptak serves up all the beautiful cakes and biscuits anyone could ask for."—Paula Forbes, Epicurious "Pastry Chef Claire Ptak has hit the nail on the head with her London bakery serving up delightful treats that have garnered a cult following (in that ever so civilized British way) in the UK and beyond." —Meghan Markle, The Tig "Ms. Ptak, a pastry chef who once worked at Chez Panisse, applies a modern, seasonal and decidedly Californian sensibility to the proper British baked goods in her London bakery. [...] They are just the kind of intriguing yet unfussy sweets I can see making all year long as the different ingredients come in and out of season."—Melissa Clark, New York Times Claire is one of my all-time favorite cake-makers, and all her baking is seasonal, beautiful, achievable, real, and of course, totally delicious.” —Jamie Oliver“A work of beauty. These gorgeous recipes are lovely and nourishing—you’ll want to stay home baking all day.” —April Bloomfield"...I found Claire Ptak's new book, The Violet Bakery Cookbook, to be a breath of fresh air. Claire's philosophy? Flavor first, without exception. Yes, she offers recipes that are gluten-free, vegan, and made with foraged ingredients, but her book doesn't fit any one of these schools of thought. Claire bakes for flavor."-Meredith Swinehart, Gardenista

I love anything baked in the morning for breakfast, and I would easily eat cake for breakfast every day if I didn’t know any better. I do keep a jar of my quinoa granola at home and love to serve it with a good goat’s or sheep’s milk yogurt as much as with cow’s milk yogurt. Many days I simply have a banana or a piece of sourdough or rye toast for my own breakfast. Sometimes it’s a boiled egg. At Violet we serve generous slices of sourdough with salted butter, seasonal jam, and raw almond butter with sea salt. We get a cold-pressed almond butter from Cornwall that is so sweet and almondy that I prefer it to a toasted variety. My favorite recipe in this section is possibly the cinnamon bun—a quick and easy bun that melts in your mouth. Every Sunday my friends Sylvia and Jo and I get cinnamon buns and coffees from the bakery and head up to Hackney Marshes with our dogs. A long walk in the wild fields that are also home to many of the ingredients I like to forage for is the perfect way to end the hectic London week. The recipes in this section are a selection of breakfast items from across a year at Violet. I have included my favorite fruit and muffin or scone pairings from each season, but you can of course substitute here and there where appropriate, depending on what is best at the market.  Buckwheat, apple, and crème fraîche sconesBuckwheat flour is one of my favorite flours to bake with. It has a very strong flavor, so it works best when mixed with other flours. It is also gluten free. In this recipe I’ve added a combination of spelt and oat flours to bolster the buckwheat. Spelt and oat are flavorful, but when mixed with buckwheat, they take a backseat. The spelt has enough gluten to carry the scones and yet leave them with a very appealing crumbly texture. The grated apple is sweet and moist and marries perfectly with the crème fraîche. For more on flours, read my pantry section (see page 224).Makes 12 large scones 150g (1½ cups) fine spelt flour    (see page 40), plus more for rolling  100g (⅔ cup) whole grain spelt flour 175g (1⅔ cups) oat flour 225g (1⅓ cups plus 2 tablespoons)    buckwheat flour 1½ teaspoons baking soda 1 tablespoon baking powder ½ teaspoon cinnamon 2 teaspoons salt 100g (½ cup) light or dark    muscovado sugar 1 tablespoon orange zest 1 teaspoon lemon zest 250g (1 cup plus 1 tablespoon)    cold unsalted butter, cut into    1-cm (½-inch) cubes  300g (1¼ cups) crème fraîche 500g (18 ounces) grated apple    (5 or 6 tart apples such as    Discovery, Gravenstein, Cox’s    Orange Pippin, or Granny Smith) 1 egg beaten with 2 tablespoons     milk, for the egg washPreheat the oven to 200°C/390°F (180°C/355°F convection). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Combine all the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl along with the zests and whisk together well. Using a pastry cutter, the back of a fork, or a mixer, cut in the cubes of butter until they are the size of large peas. Stir together the crème fraîche and grated apple. Mix this into the flour and butter mixture until it barely holds together. Turn out on to a flour-dusted surface and pat roughly into a square. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes, then flatten it to about 2.5cm (1 inch) thick with a rolling pin. Fold it in half so that you have a rectangle. Then fold it in half again into a small square. Let it rest for 7 minutes, then roll it into a square about 4cm (1½ inches) thick.  Use a sharp knife to cut the square into three long pieces. Cut each log into two and then each square into two triangles. Place on the lined baking sheet (or wrap in plastic wrap and store in the freezer), brush with the egg wash, and bake for about 35 minutes, or until golden brown.  These are best eaten on the day you bake them.

Pretty Pictures but Recipes Lack Detail, Even Fail for This Experienced Baker - Major WTF Moments By Brittany I'd like to begin my review by saying I'm a huge fan of Violet Bakery and Claire Ptak. I was so excited to get this book and immediately launched into trying some of the recipes. While the photography and presentation of the book is stunning and extremely enjoyable to read, the instructions are problematic, omit information, and gloss over important information/technique.The first recipe I tried was the caramel shards used in the Butterscotch Blondies. Working with sugar is difficult and the book calls for no candy thermometer. One recipe went acrid and burned within seconds - the instructions urged taking the sugar to very dark territory which I eventually had to abandon to end up with an edible batch. The blondies themselves went off without a hitch and were definitely delicious.Next, I made the caramel sauce in preparation for making the Devil's Food cake with Salted Caramel Icing (more on this later). I have a lot of experience in baking, including sugar work with thermometers, but had never made caramel. Everything was going well sans thermometer until I followed - to a T - the instruction to add the hot cream "immediately" to the sugar mixture once it reached done. D I S A S T E R. I didn't know that the entire thing would bubble over and nearly explode in my face - keep in mind, the heat is off but the sugar - hotter than boiling water - retains a huge amount of heat and cooked the cream into an explosive bubbling mess that was all over my stovetop. The batch was completely derailed but I had enough time (and materials) to try again... so I did and then S L O W L Y added the cream bit by bit to the hot sugar as I incorporated it to create a smooth, explosion-free caramel. Success in the end but after MAJOR WTF moment / half an hour cleaning the stove. At this point I was pretty pissed but I figured as the blondies had been great, maybe it was just the sugar work pieces of the book that lacked proper instructions. Wrong. In preparation for a party I'm hosting tomorrow, I've just finished making the Devil's Food Cake - per the book - the night before, so the "crumb has a chance to settle." I'm seriously having the hugest WTF moment right now after taking the cake out of the oven and finding a completely collapsed center. Trust I followed directions exactly and have never in my nearly 20 years of baking EVER produced a failed / fallen cake. The center failed to rise on the cake leaving an inverted dome shape at the center. Dude... this was like, going to be the centerpiece of my party tomorrow? I looked into reasons cakes fail to rise (ironically even in years of baking many gluten-free recipes, I've never had this problem) and one major reason is low temperature. Weirdly, the book calls for cooking this cake at 320 F. I doubted it but went ahead with following the directions exactly. I've put the cake back in at 350 and am hoping to achieve some puff in the center but not feeling that's likely at all. I'd already cooked the cake for well over the upper limit of the recommended time. I know my oven and 2-5 minutes on top of the upper limit of recommended time is standard for baked perfection - this cake already baked far more than that and still failed to rise.If you check the Amazon.co.uk reviews of this book, you'll find a negative review with a string of comments attached where other bakers also struggled with the Devil's Food Cake recipe and had the exact issues I did. I don't think that could be a coincidence.Seriously disappointed and it bums me out to even write this review as after all of this, I'm still a fan of Claire. I love her styling and the treats at Violet are so good. But as a veteran cook and baker who has never struggled too much with the craft, to experience epic failures so far on three recipes out of four is terrifying / leads me to want to sell this book only a month after having gotten it. SAD!

Great, unusual but delicious recipes for baking By Reviewer I came across this book at the library and figured I'd give it a shot, never having heard of Violet Bakery or knowing why they have a cookbook. I'm glad I did. First, a lot of the recipes look and sound amazing. The pictures are beautiful. There's a lot of variety - it's not just cookies and cakes, but there are some savory tarts and other stuff.I've only tried one recipe so far, but it came out so good that I had to come here and give the book a five star review. The Chewy Ginger Snaps. I made them exactly according to the recipe, and they came out looking exactly like the picture. And they are SO GOOD. Not too sweet, complex spice flavor, and chewy. Looking forward to trying more recipes once we eat all these cookies. The recipes here are presented in both weight and volume, which I appreciate since I prefer to use my kitchen scale when baking.

The non-metric measurements were off in the first recipe I tried (cinnamon buns). 560 g of flour is 4 cups, not 1 1/4 as the recipe states. An expert baker would have noticed that the flour to liquid ratio would be off, and would have caught this, but the book is not aimed at only expert bakers. Not a good showing on the editing front . . . I will continue to try things, but will be very careful about the non-metric measurements.

Free PDF Ebook American Aliens: A Collection of Short Stories, by Patrick J. Power

This collection of stories, of America, conveys a raw intensity allied with a keenly observant eye. A narrator, whose work is both powerful and personal, Patrick J. Power is startlingly original. He creates highly visual portrayals of below-the-radar, seldom-documented American immigrant experiences. There is intensity and sometimes darkness in stories that span the seventies, eighties and nineties; stories of life and death; love and loss; sometimes humorous, sometimes bleak and troubled. Two teens acquire an automobile and drive across America without a driving permit. They experience thought-provoking encounters with locals along the road, problems crossing the border into Mexico. There is the humorous and yet sad tale of four friends vain search for whiskey on Christmas Day, the stark portrayal of a man sinking into drug addiction having fallen in with the wrong crowd, the young Polish immigrant enticed into running a marathon of desire, an Irish immigrant who feuds with two Iranian work colleagues over immigration rules and regulations. These are undeniably stories of heartbreak and joy, from the depths of despair to the dizzy heights of life itself. The story of immigration is the story of America itself. These eighteen short stories paint a picture of how American Aliens survive and strive to evade the anxiety of their dilemma on a daily basis. The reader is challenged to think about life on the outside, the struggle of those that do not belong yet conversely keep a country alive.

Brown The stories in this collection range from semi-autobiographical to pure folktale--even to shaggy dog story--and it's sometimes hard to tell the difference. There is the spontaneity and energy of On the Road combined with a good-natured willingness to accept magical or near-magical elements unquestioningly. It's first person journalism with a dash of magical realism. As a literary concoction, I wouldn't recommend it in general, but it works beautifully in this one-off collection. You never know where the introspective first-person accounts are going to go, but there is a continuity of character traits among the narrators that keeps the narrative going through the sometimes chaotic and rarely rational plots.Individually, with a few exceptions, the stories are delightful, of four-star quality. But the collection is more than the sum of its parts. The author seems to be telling one cosmic story in multiple overlapping ways, in totally different contexts, over several decades. The experience of being an immigrant is the major motif, and the author has a specific kind of immigrant in mind. The literal immigrants in the stories chose their destinations, they are not wretched refuse of teeming shores, but bored or restless young men (usually) fascinated by the potential for adventure in a promised land. They bring connections with them, usually to relatives both at home and in the new land, but also to a culture (usually Irish) or to institutions (for example, the US Navy). Thus they are tourists in a sense rather than immigrants, they have something to go back to, a family at home, a berth on a ship; and they are not the pioneers in their new land, but part of a later wave. These immigrants often share a romantic notion that they are natural allies of all groups who face discrimination. This occasionally results in some clumsy preaching, but the stories are too grounded and too cheerful to get bogged down in politics. While there is little explicit sexuality, sex in imagination plays a large part in the stories, while sex in practice is unpleasant and scary. In the early stories, the ones that take place in the 1970s, homosexual theme lurk below the surface, but these disappear in the remainder of the book.Overall a wonderful collection of short stories by a first time author.

Power began preparing for a career as a writer by leaving after high school in Ireland and opening his heart and mind to the traveling experience - a decision that has resulted in a modern day troubadour as this richly rewarding book attests. His road trip began in America, and subsequently included living and working in Dublin, New York, Boston, Nuremberg, Chicago, Prague, Bisbee Arizona. He currently lives in Belgium. His employment along the way has included working as a manager of a Jazz club in New York, a teacher in Prague, and various stints as a promoter. He calls this debut publication `a culmination and blend of experiences of travelling and living in the US as an illegal alien during the seventies, eighties and nineties.'Patrick divides his book into three parts - Part I THE BOY 1970s, Part II THE MAN 1980s, and Part III AMERICAN ALIENS. As his summary states, `This collection of stories, of America, conveys a raw intensity allied with a keenly observant eye creating highly visual portrayals of below-the-radar, seldom-documented American immigrant experiences. He gives evidence of superficial overtures to deeper philosophies of life, as in the following: `The approaching train was much closer now, making that absurdly huge sound of metal on metal, creating that monstrous shuddering of the ground as if some apocalyptic messenger was arriving to announce the end was nigh; followed closely by the inevitable double hoot, sounding menacing in the sleety cold evening in the middle of which he thought he heard George say goodbye young man as he walked towards the edge of the platform but didn't stop at the edge. He stepped off in front of the express train just as Jack switched off his messages.' And in another story he shares, `In common with the majority of Irish emigrants they shared a common love affair with things Irish in America, and of course playing and then supporting your local GAA club was part 'n parcel of the life. It was the connection which led all the way across the wide Atlantic and allowed each member to touch the weather beaten rocks of the coast of home while attending the games each Sunday of the spring and summer in Gaelic Park. Both men were due to be buried in American graveyards as large as a small county back home. The gatherings would be small enough at the funerals they both knew. It would depend on how long they would hang in there at the finish. The older the emigrant when he or she passed away corresponded to the size of the attendees at his or her funeral.`What makes these short stories sing is Patrick's way with words and songs and tales that speak to the special attempt of miscegenation of immigrants as they adapt to life in a new land. They are superbly written and delicious! And there is a smidgen of Brendan Behan that makes these stories irresistible.Grady Harp, May 15

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Strong collection of stories about the immigrant experience. By Ladybug I agreed to read and write a review for these stories because I was intrigued by author Patrick Power's background. Power lived in the US as an illegal alien for two significant chunks of time in his life, and most of these stories, he says, are based on those times. The stories have interesting premises. Their themes are universal and easy to relate to. Many of the stories are about travel and about the relationships formed while heading off to or exploring new places. A few of the stories are about love and connection--or about wanting love and connection. I was impressed with Power's ability to describe the more vulnerable aspects of love relationships in an honest and tender way. Most of the stories have good flow and move along swiftly. Power communicates his ideas very clearly, so I always knew where he was coming from and where he was going. My one main criticism is that the stories tend to rely too heavily on dialogue. Not only can this get confusing with the back-and-forth, back-and-forth, but this approach kept me from knowing Power's characters on a deeper level. One story was a notable exception: Express Train. I liked how that story was more focused on the inner life of the characters and their interactions with each other. There was more back story, more depth, and more variety in personality, so the story was more interesting to me than others.Overall, this is a strong collection of stories. Good luck to you in the future, Patrick!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. the mundane and the fantastic By StrangePegs So let's play pretend for a moment. It's Christmas. Now, I don't know who you are or how you celebrate Christmas or the yule season, but, yet, that's what it is. You're descended from an ancient, reclusive people who live in a small fishing town in the northeast. Not many of them ever leave. Yet, somehow, whether it was your grandfather or your mother or whoever, one of your more immediate ancestors left that village. All you know is that once a century, your people, your family, are commanded to keep the Festival. You are the only one of any of the scattered ones of your people who return to keep the tradition. And what you find there in that village of your people, that village that you have never before visited, is far from... normal.Would you go back? Knowing that your parents or your grandparents, whoever it was who "escaped," is ignoring the call. All of your immediate family is ignoring the call of upholding the tradition. Would you go back?"The Festival," by Lovecraft, is the story of a man who did go back. A man who finds stranger and stranger things the more he allows himself to be pulled along with the happenings of the Festival. A man who, in the end, is left to question... everything. Even his sanity. The real power in this one, apart from Lovecraft's imagery, is the blending of the mundane with the fantastic. Everything is just normal enough for the protagonist to think that he's imagining things or that he's the one who's crazy. All I know is if I ever get called to some out-of-the-way location for some ancient family tradition that I am going to do some major amounts of research before I go.

Four great stories for the price of one By Denniger Bolton If you know me, you know I love time travel books and I also love to get four books for the price of one. Double win for me. Or quadruple. All four stories are fun with a little sex added in each. In the first story, Heidi, a PHD student of all things Viking is at an archeology site and is sucked into a temporal gate ending up in the same place but back when the Vikings first came to Newfoundland. In the second story Jason, a UPS driver is transported from current time to 1800s Kansas in answer to a prayer from 8 women who are looking for a man. That was a fun one. Then a young woman is progressed back to a past life in Victorian times as the daughter of a Lord and Lady who falls for a stableman. And the 4th story about a woman obsessed with Highlanders of Scotland who gets her wish. Good stories all.

Each one is so different from the last but each share enjoyable characters, interesting plot lines and each packs some heat. I particularly liked the Victorian love story which had everything; drama, mystery, love and twists too.

I am a huge fan of any love story or novel that's why I got this book. It was indeed a breathtaking love story. Full of passion, commitment and more that really amazed me. Then the characters are properly described with great scenes that really manifested. The author did a great job in presenting this heart warming endless story. I would love to read more books from this author. I highly recommend.

Austin A wonderful, pictorial summary of the gingerbread houses that were constructed to decorate the White House for the Christmas holiday season with commentary from the executive chef who oversaw the design and production. The color photos are great, and I'm anxious to try the recipes (scaled for home cooks) in my own kitchen. The appended templates will be helpful in cutting them out so that readers can create their own special holiday treats! I'd read his earlier book on his experiences in the White House; so, I expected that this book would combine a bit of the earlier style and humor. I wasn't disappointed!
