About the Author LEE FOUST is a fiction writer and performer from OAKLAND, CA, who has lived in FLORENCE, ITALY, since the mid-1990s. He teaches literature and Creative Writing for various US universities abroad and is the father of one. SAN FRANCISCO'S PUNK ROCK ERA By LeRoy Chatfield Lee Foust,Thank you for sending along your inscribed Poison and Antidote; very thoughtful of you, and much appreciated!I finished reading it today and it gives me a lot to think about, especially because it is set in San Francisco, where I lived and taught for many years during the Beat era.Without doubt, you have captured the yearning, the chaos, the counterculture, the implausible dreams, the music . . . and yes, sad to report, the addictions that fried so many young people. Depicting the Bohemian art scene of 1980's San Francisco, the nine stories of Foust's collection captures the writers, musicians, drug addicts, and all-around lost and worn out denizens of the Reaganomics and punk rock era with a spiteful and yet, ironically nostalgic air. At times funny, macabre, sad or combination of the three, 'Poison and Antidote' is the work of a rebel author at the height of his rebellion.

Reading the pieces, frequently not in the order presented, was like seeing flashes from a movie: not always getting all of the context, but enough to feel emotive recognition.I expect to keep 'Poison and Antidote' with the stack of books at my bedside, for those times when I want to read something brief but not something mindless. This book is absolutely NOT mindless, even though as people in our twenties we often did mindless things, and it offers a glimpse into those times and that place for seekers of shared memories. .
