Nick & Rosalie finding love again the second time around, but fifty years later. This love story just about had me in tears. Beautiful book to readThe Sapphire Bay series was so much fun reading, especially if you're big sucker for a good romance books. I highly recommend Sandra Edwards books. Indeed a Five Star rating

Life marches on and change is inevitable. This is brought home through the central characters. Two generations of strong women. One is looking back fondly at her life and the events that led her to where she is. The other is learning about herself and falling in love. The concept of the story is breathtaking. Change is the one constant in life and that is the point I took away from this story.

This was a really touching short story! Two souls met 50 years ago, but drifted apart. Surprisingly, both come back to the same location to relive their happy memories, not knowing the other is there. Add in their grandkids and some more romance and we have a story that I look forward to reading over and over again! I really enjoyed seeing this truly sweet story unfold! Wonderful read!

"Dora Charles is the real deal, and hers may be the most honest - and personal - southern cookbook I've ever read." - John Martin Taylor In her first cookbook, a revered former cook at Savannah's most renowned restaurant divulges her locally famous Savannah recipes—many of them never written down before—and those of her family and friends Hundreds of thousands of people have made a trip to dine on the exceptional food cooked by Dora Charles at Savannah's most famous restaurant. Now, the woman who was barraged by editors and agents to tell her story invites us into her home to taste the food she loves best.  These are the intensely satisfying dishes at the heart of Dora's beloved Savannah: Shrimp and Rice; Simple Smoky Okra; Buttermilk Cornbread from her grandmother; and of course, a truly incomparable Fried Chicken. Each dish has a "secret ingredient" for a burst of flavor: mayonnaise in the biscuits; Savannah Seasoning in her Gone to Glory Potato Salad; sugar-glazed bacon in her deviled eggs. All the cornerstones of the Southern table are here, from Out-of-This-World Smothered Catfish to desserts like a jaw-dropping Very Red Velvet Cake.  With moving dignity, Dora describes her motherless upbringing in Savannah, the hard life of her family, whose memories stretched back to slave times, learning to cook at age six, and the years she worked at the restaurant. “Talking About” boxes impart Dora’s cooking wisdom, and evocative photos of Savannah and the Low Country set the scene.

A Real Southern Cook: In Her Savannah Kitchen, by Dora Charles

Review "Dora Charles's take on classic Southern recipes is approachable and creative, and her moment in the spotlight is long overdue."--Eater.com "The book is itself a tribute to a woman who never imagined she would have to practice signing her name for fans... Some recipes...like crab cakes, poundcakes, and jambalaya, are the best of scratch cooking... Ms. Charles is a meticulous and methodical cook...[she] is also an astute interpreter of culture... [She] stresses the importance of selecting good raw ingredietns and building flavor at every step, like saving what she called fry-meat-grease from bacon, sausage, or pork chops to rub on sweet potatoes as they bake or to eliven rice and greens..."--The New York Times "Even just reading the names of recipes in Savannah chef Dora Charles' debut cookbook is making us wild with hunger – Buttermilk cornbread? Fried chicken? Very red velvet cake? We're not sure we can wait until September."—People.com "A Real Southern Cook is a beautiful read, a vital illustration of Southern foodways, and an important addition to the canon of great American cookbooks." - Matt Lee and Ted Lee, authors of The Lee Bros. Charleston Kitchen "Dora Charles is the real deal, and hers may be the most honest — and personal — Southern cookbook I've read." - John Taylor, author of Hoppin' John's Lowcountry Cooking and owner of HoppinJohns.com"After soaking in pages of fried spareribs, red rice, and coconut cake, I just wanted to be at Dora’s house when supper was served.” — Vivian Howard, chef and owner, Chef & the Farmer and creator of the PBS documentaryA Chef’s Life  “Dora Charles and her family recipes are legendary in Savannah, and finally she has written them down for the rest of us.” — Nathalie Dupree, author and television personality “Dora Charles is unabashedly honest about the scarred beauty that is Southern food. It is time to make some Tomato Pie and some Hushpuppies, because within those recipes are the stories of family and place.” —Hugh Acheson, chef and author "People like Dora and the food she cooks are what I love about the South — real people, honest cooking. Two thumbs up!" –Eddie Hernandez , executive chef of Taqueria del Sol restaurants

I am world travelled and simply love food - a true foodie. I have hundreds of cookbooks. But during the holidays I find myself in mourning. I've lost so many in my family - my mother, my grandmothers, aunts, and uncles. I am realizing that my generation has made a grievous error in letting the old ones go to their graves without learning the traditions. In today's society we praise the new and criticize the past. But past is not just prologue, it is history, it is tradition. On my mother's side (the side that hosted the holiday dinners) the people are from the South. The family settled in Cleveland, OH, by way of Florida, by way of Alabama (which they left because the Klan was after one of my great Uncles). As a child, during the holidays, I travelled to the Midwest to eat food that was decidedly Southern. It was delicious. But that isn't the whole story. Nowadays when people speak of Southern food or Soul food, they do so with a grimace, labeling it as unhealthy, the cause of diabetes, etc. Ironically, most of MY old ones, born and raised on this food, lived into their 90's. But in many ways this unhealthy designation is just another form of cultural denigration, while at the same time, every chef on the Food Network is incorporating those foods and methods into their own, so called gourmet cooking. Therefore, because society dismissed the old southern cooking as "not good enough", many who were raised with this kind of cooking chose not to preserve the memory of it, and, tragically, the memories of those who prepared it. This is a grievous mistake and I thank Dora for helping me just a little on my course correction. This book is beautiful and actually made me cry. It is exactly how I remember my family cooking. The recipes look amazing. I'll update my review when I have tried some, but I know that they are good because they are EXACTLY as ours were prepared. A couple are identical to the few I was able to snag for posterity. Her spirit and approach are the real thing. Not some chef TRYING to cook Southern, but a Southern cook trying to put into words what comes naturally to her. And those words are amazing. This book is well written and tells a story that needs to be told in the way it should be told. One last thing, please try to come off the high horse that I've seen so many on when reviewing this cookbook. For instance reviewers have scoffed at her use of Accent, Lawry's, Biscquick, margarine, etc. She labels Accent as "optional" - it's only recently that we have discarded this chemical for health reasons. People cooked with it for many years to enhance flavor. Lawry's is simply a mix of seasoning - the proportions of which have been copywrited and sold. Biscquick is simply a stabilzed baking mix. You could make it fresh if you want to, but many poor and busy people found it easier to buy it premade. Margarine, which I never touch, was put out as a HEALTHY alternative to butter a few decades back and an entire generation grew up using it as their butter and are accustomed to the flavor. I say this so that people see that many of these processed additives WERE a part of the organic evolution of black southern cooking. However if you read closely in the book, she sticks mostly to scratch. Finally, she talks about fry grease and people run for the hills. However if you'll stand still for a moment, all fry grease is is the grease that has been infused by the meat that was cooking in it. It is used as a flavoring IN LIEU of an unflavored oil. Ie: 2 tblsp of rendered bacon fat instead of 2 tblsp of olive oil. Not more fat, more flavor. At any rate, my point is not to convince anybody to eat Southern food. My point is that if Southern food was at all a part of your heritage, this book is for you. It is history as told by the cook. It is love through food. I might buy another copy just to give her the sale.

I have never felt like I was meeting an old friend for the first time. After reading her warm story of determination and love of cooking I immediately fell in love. Not only do we have this woman's story. We have her food. Food not only permeated with love but with deliberate seasoning and honed craft.Of the beautiful photographs the one MOST beautiful was that of her family. And what a lucky family they are. They are the first hand recipients of "Gone-to-Glory Potato Salad", 'Oven Baked Savannah Red Rice", and "Surprise Peach Cobbler".The peach cobbler was the first recipe I made. Dora's instructions are very clear even though she is an "intuitive" cook and doesn't write anything down. The cobbler was easy to put together, perfectly spiced and put me in mind of my grandmother from Natchez, MS. If I was a peach, this is how I'd want to end up. Very silky, buttery and ultimately special. Like my grandmother.I DEARLY hope we have MANY more books from Dora. I have learned much of what I cook and how I cook from Ina Garten...but Dora has my heart and my gratitude. Good luck, Ms. Charles. I wish you all the success in the world!!! You surely deserve it.

Dora Charles comes from a family that has produced great cooks for many generations, from the days of slavery, and she shares stories that give the recipes historical and social context and meaning. She began learning to cook from her grandmother when she was six years old, the same age that her grandmother herself had taken a job as a cook's assistant and began learning to cook.In this book, Ms. Charles passes her knowledge on to to the reader, just as her relatives and friends taught her and generations of cooks before her. The beautiful photographs of the author and her family, of the Savannah, Georgia area, and of course of the wonderful food she cooks, help bring it all to life. Even the organization of the book into chapters helps tell her story. Her anecdotes may bring a tear to the eye on occasion, but they are consistently full of joy, and that smile on her face is genuine. I had to chuckle when I read that she doesn't think that she has ever seen leftover deviled eggs, because it made me think about it, and I haven't ever seen any, either. Her confession of using Squeeze Parkay as a secret weapon to finish off a dish that needs a little something made me both laugh and cry a little, because that was something I often saw my grandmother do on the sly. This book is comforting. The recipes are mostly for traditional Southern country dishes, including some particular to the Lowcountry, and so there are readers who will recognize the details of the methods of preparation and seasoning. However, many of these recipes are rarely found in writing, even in the fundraising cookbooks published by churches and clubs, and I have never seen them so well-presented and accompanied by such good advice. It really seems as if you are right there in the kitchen with her watching over your shoulder, ready with a helpful tip just when it is needed. There are also many of her own recipes, such as quick grits cooked for an hour and a half, as well as a few recipes for more modern dishes, but they all draw on the same culinary tradition and expertise and use of all the senses in making satisfying food. The author has had many decades of experience cooking professionally, and perhaps a book of her large-scale recipes for the professional chef will be forthcoming. I would also like to read her advice on making sweet tea!

I’ve always liked short stories, short shorts, and flash fiction. The investment of time is on the briefer side, and often just as rewarding as a novel. I’ve penned a few, myself, and selected my personal favorites, including a couple of flashes. All the selections involve murder, suspense, surprise or chicanery. Some stories have pretty unlikely heroes, such as an English bulldog named Jemma. Some learn and grow, some go to jail, some die, some profit from other people’s villainy. The common thread is their humanness, even the dog’s. I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Corliss and Other Award Winning Stories, by Heather Haven

About the Author After studying drama at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida, Heather went to Manhattan to pursue a career. There she wrote short stories, novels, comedy acts, television treatments, ad copy, commercials, and two one-act plays, produced at several places, such as Playwrights Horizon. Once she even ghostwrote a book on how to run an employment agency. She was unemployed at the time. One of her first paying jobs was writing a love story for a book published by Bantam called Moments of Love. She had a deadline of one week but promptly came down with the flu. Heather wrote "The Sands of Time" with a raging temperature, and delivered some pretty hot stuff because of it. Her stint at New York City’s No Soap Radio - where she wrote comedic ad copy – help develop her long-time love affair with comedy. So far, she has written four novels in the humorous Alvarez Family Murder Mystery series. The first, Murder is a Family Business, was winner of the Single Titles Reviewers’ Choice Award 2011. The second, A Wedding to Die For, received the finalist nods from both Global and EPIC’s Best eBook Mystery of the Year, 2012. The third of the series, Death Runs in the Family, received the Gold for Best Mystery Fiction 2013. The fourth book, Dead…If Only, was released October 13, 2014. Books one and two of the Persephone Cole Vintage Mysteries,, The Dagger Before Me, Iced Diamonds, and the soon-to-be-released The Chocolate Kiss-Off are centered around one of Manhattan’s first female detectives (Sam Spade with lipstick) during WWII. Death of a Clown, winner of the Silver IPPY for Best Mystery/thriller 2014, is a standalone mystery noir, which takes place during the golden age of circus life of the forties.

Goldberg Heather Haven is renowned for her mysteries, so rich in character, setting, snappy dialogue, and deliciously arch humor. Now we get to meet Heather as a short story writer, and it is a delightful meeting. This is truly a box of confections. Each story is a delicious surprise, from the flash fiction to the more developed works. I can only wish it were longer, and happily hope for more to come.

Instantly drawn into another time and place By Kemberlee Lugo Shortland I picked up this book because I'm such a fan of Heather Haven's Alvarez Mysteries, and this story was labeled 'A Short Humorous Suspense Story.' I was just going to take a brief look before bed and ended up staying up until I'd finished. This story is a far cry from the Alvarez Mysteries. And I wouldn't call any of it humorous. This is as serious as it comes. The voice in this story is unique and distinct. I was instantly drawn into another time and place. Another culture. Corliss is a product of her social class, a woman who's had a mix of lucks in her life. But she's smart and learns to stand on her own two feet, even if it means sacrifices. This is as much a tale of love as redemption. This is a tale well-told tale with understanding and empathy. A must read!

I still have a collection of short stories from grammar school that is tattered and torn from rereading. Corliss struck me the same way. To so quickly get inside a character to the point where you think you could recognize him or her on the street, live a vignette or longer in the life of that character, and have that character stay with you to the point where you want to know more is a magical talent. Heather Haven has given me another book to reread until it's tattered and torn.I love the Alvarez mysteries, but these stories have a charm that even wild, sophisticated, glamorous Lee Alvarez can't duplicate (I can't even picture Corliss ever owning a pair of high heels.)Thanks, Heather, keep them coming!

The Korean Table: From Barbecue to Bibimbap 100 Easy-To-Prepare Recipes, by Taekyung Chung, Debra Samuels

From Publishers Weekly Cooking school teachers Chung and Samuels offer an alluring array of Korean recipes designed for the Western kitchen. As an added bonus, the authors delve into the history of the cuisine, including the importance of balance in taste and color, medicinal qualities of ingredients, and construction of the typical Korean family meal. They also include a lengthy section introducing the reader to common ingredients of the cuisine. The dishes, some traditional, some modernized for contemporary tastes, are what the authors call a starter kit: the building blocks essential to Korean cooking. Staples include Kimchi Paste, Soy Scallion Dipping Sauce and a collection of homemade stocks. Because Korean meals often include a minimum of five dishes, recipes are quick and accessible. Some, such as Korean Dumplings, include handy sidebars with instructions on technique. Others, such as Asparagus Salad, Korean Hot Wings, and Stir Fried Beef with Vegetables clearly appeal to the American sense of familiarity, albeit with a Korean flair. For the more adventurous, recipes such as Roasted Corn Tea, Kimchi Soup, and Warm and Spicy Squid Salad are sure to appeal. Complete with full-color photos throughout, this collection offers a welcome and undaunting introduction into Korean cuisine. (Oct.) It's rare that I want to make every recipe in a cook book, but that's the case here. I wanted to learn about Korean food and, living in Los Angeles, I have access to a rich, authentic Korean community. I use this book to guide me in Korean markets. The recipes are easy to follow, they always work and they're very tasty. For anyone who wants to expand their cooking repertoire to include this great cuisine, I recommend this book. (Also, compared it to others in the library and this was my favorite.)

Good for beginners, but not very authentic recipes By Melo After reading the reviews on most of the Korean cook books available on Amazon, I decided to go with this one. I'm a Korean American born and raised in Texas marrried to a Korean man born and raised in Korea. Needless to say, I found the need to learn how to cook more Korean dishes. I had a couple of recipes up my sleeves already, but that obviously wasn't going to be enough for a man that was going to be missing his homeland food terribly now that he's living in Houston. Yes, there are a few very good Korean restaurants in Houston, but we can't be eating out all the time! I was hoping this book would be perfect for a novice like me, but I ended up being quite disappointed. The illustrations are great, but the recipes are not all the most authentic. Some of the dishses my husband had never even heard of. Many of the recipes seem to be "westernized." I still think this would be a great book for a beginner, but not for someone who is looking for authentic Korean recipes.

Attractive, user friendly, and practical even for busy cooks By Lynn Harnett The basics chapter, which kicks off this attractive and practical book, is a confidence booster. Simple base sauces and spice pastes which last for months allow the home cook to whip up kimchi or mouthwatering barbecue at a whim (plus a day for marinating).A sample meal might include Barbecued Ribs or Hot Wings or Whole Baked Fish (simply seasoned with Red Pepper Paste, made ahead and handy in the fridge) or Kimchi Hot Pot; Cucumber and Grilled Eggplant (pan-fried eggplant with raw cucumbers in a soy-scallion sauce), or Seasoned Bean Sprouts; Potato and Basil pancakes (also served with soy-scallion dipping sauce) or Kimchi Pancakes; Sticky Rice with Dried Fruit and Nuts, or Korean Fried Rice; and Garden Ripe Tomatoes Drizzled with Honey for dessert.Organized by course, using ingredients found in the local grocery and accompanied by luscious photographs, these 100 recipes are easy and exotic, many taking only a few minutes to prepare. A user-friendly introduction to a lively cuisine.

Best PDF Ebook The Reflection of Life: Functional Entailment and Imminence in Relational Biology (IFSR International Series on Systems Science and Engineering), by A. H. Louie

A. H. Louie’s The Reflection of Life: Functional Entailment and Imminence in Relational Biology is a continuation of the exploratory journey in relational biology which began with his 2009 monograph More Than Life Itself: A Synthetic Continuation in Relational Biology. The theme of his first book was ‘What is life?’; the theme of this sequel is “How do two life forms interact?” Biology is a subject concerned with organization of relations. Relational biology is the approach that advocates ‘function dictates structure”, rather than ‘structure implies function’. It is mathematics decoded into biological realizations. The book demonstrates some of the powers of the approach of relational biology, and illustrates how pertinent problems in biology can be better addressed this way. In the first volume the theory was developed by using partially ordered sets, lattices, simulations, models, Aristotle’s four causes, graphs, categories, simple and complex systems, anticipatory systems, and metabolism-repair [(M,R)-] systems.

Here in the second volume, these tools are expanded to employ set-valued mappings, adjacency matrices, random graphs, and interacting entailment networks. The theory of set-valued mappings culminates in the imminence mapping, which equips the further  investigation of functional entailment in complex relational networks. Imminence in (M,R)-networks that model living systems addresses the topics of biogenesis and natural selection. Interacting (M,R)-networks with mutually entailing processes serve as  models in the study of symbiosis and pathophysiology. The formalism also provides a natural framework for a relational theory of virology and oncology.

This book will serve researchers and graduate students in mathematics and biology.

About the Author Dr. Aloisius H. Louie is a mathematical biologist. His 1981 PhD thesis topic was on the abstract formulation of categorical system theory in biology. Robert Rosen, then Killam Professor of Biomathematics at Dalhousie University (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada), was his mentor. His other degrees are BSc (1978, Honours Mathematics and Biology) and MA (1979, Pure Mathematics) from the University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario, Canada). Dr. Louie's research subjects have encompassed abstract formulations, mathematical modelling, and computer simulations of various natural and physical phenomena, including dynamic behaviour of protein molecules, enzyme-substrate recognition, processes of irreversible thermodynamics, human-pollutant interactions, the cell biology of senescence, and electromagnetics. His premier interest, however, remains the epistemological aspects of mathematical biology.

Gwinn As the author states, this book is 'Opus II' to his 'Opus I', his previous book, More Than Life Itself: A Synthetic Continuation in Relational Biology (hereafter 'ML'). As in my review of ML, I consider this book as required reading for any reader of Robert Rosen's Life Itself or anyone interested the question "what is life?".Although a brief intro to relational biology is provided in the Exordium, ML is definitely a prerequisite read for this book. Otherwise, some of the discussions may be difficult to follow. Stylistically, this is similar to ML insofar as the reader is first treated to a brief course in the "tools" needed for the ensuing discussions, including set-valued mapping and adjacency matrices. These tools are then used in the discussions of functional entailment and imminence.Relational biology is the study of functions and their interactions, rather than studying the particular physical realizations. Modeled as set-valued mappings, functions can entail other functions which can, in turn, entail still other functions. This functional entailment is imminence, and is central to the book. Indeed, from imminence the near certainty of the genesis of life very neatly arises. I cannot do justice here to a detailed description or the import of this concept.Following these discussions, Louie then turns to the interactions between (M,R)-networks, including discussions of virology, symbiosis, natural selection, biogenesis, pathophysiology, oncology and more. These demonstrate the utility and elegant power of relational biology. Some may find these models too elegant; that is, too abstract or "simplistic". However, the argument from the relational biology perspective is that there is no coherent reason to judge the models based on their lack of difficulty or messiness. As Louie remarks: "I wonder how people can appreciate the ontological beauty of nature but then insist on its epistemological ugliness."As with ML, the reader should expect a deeply mathematical treatment which will require studious attention. It is well worth it.Table of Contents================Exordium: An Introduction to Relational BiologyProlegomenon: CardinalisPART I - Pentateuchus: Becoming Mapping 1) Mapping Origins 2) From Points to Sets 3) Principles of Set-Valued Mappings 4) Censusing Independence 5) Set-Valued Mappings ReduxPART II - Functional Entailment 6) The Logic of Entailment 7) The Imminence Mapping 8) Imminence of Life 9) Imminence in ModelsPART III - Interacting (M,R)-Networks 10) Connections 11) Symbiosis 12) Pathophysiology 13) Relational Virology 14) Therapeutics
