As the previous reviewers have mentioned, this is a tight, little book with some very good ideas for smoothies and topping them to your heart's content. The author writes in a conversational, passionate tone that it makes me want to rush to the kitchen to make a smoothie bowl at midnight. My only disappointment about this book is that there are no photos, save for the one on the cover. I guess I can't quibble since this book is free but pictures would've been great. Also, and I'm not sure if this is helpful or it will prevent me from making a smoothie bowl, but each recipe's nutritional information is given: some of these supposedly healthy bowls clock in at close to a 1,000 calories! As with all things, moderation is key, even with smoothie bowls!

Complete digitally restored reprint (facsimile) of the original edition of 1895 with excellent resolution and outstanding readability. Illustrated with 8 pictures. A House-Boat on the Styx is a book written by John Kendrick Bangs and published in 1895. The premise of the book is that everyone who has ever died (up to the time in which the book is set, which seems to be about the time of its publication) has gone to Styx, the river that circles the underworld. The book begins with Charon, ferryman of the Styx being startled—and annoyed—by the arrival of a houseboat on the Styx. At first afraid that the boat will put him out of business, he later finds out that he is actually to be appointed the boat's janitor. What follows are eleven more stories (for a total of twelve) which are set on the house boat. There is no central theme, and the purpose of the book appears to be as a literary thought experiment to see what would happen if various famous dead people were put in the same room with each other. Each chapter is a short story featuring various souls from history and mythology. In the twelfth chapter the house boat disappears, leading into the sequel, Pursuit of the House-Boat. The book was among the best selling books in the United States in 1896. Chapter: (1) Charon makes a discovery, (2) A disputed Authorship, (3) Washington gives a dinner, (4) Hamlet makes a suggestion, (5) The House committee discuss the Poets, (6) Some theories, Darwinian and otherwise, (7) A discussion as to Ladies’ Day, (8) A discontented shade, (9) As to cookery and sculpture, (10) Story-Tellers’ Night, (11) As to Saurians and other, (12) The House-Boat disappears

Most of what he wrote, though very clever, will probably come across as very dated today. One exception is A House-Boat on the Styx. This book is written in the succession of Homer, Vergil, and Dante as a major work on "The Lower Regions". It is reminiscent of Lucian of Samosta and several other ancient writers including Aristophanes. Bangs' story takes place in the afterlife when Napoleon, Washington, Baron Munchausen, Dr. Johnson, Goldsmith, Mark Twain, Kipling and others form a men's club which meets in a plush, luxurious houseboat anchored on the edge of the river Styx. Anyone who likes history and brilliant, satyrical wit would enjoy this book. It is a timeless classic.

Bangsian Fantasy By Kat Hooper John Kendrick Bangs (1862-1922) was an American humorist who edited some popular American magazines such as Harper's Weekly and Puck. His satirical novella A House-Boat on the Styx is responsible for the term Bangsian Fantasy, which refers to stories about famous people in the afterlife (e.g., Philip Jose Farmer's Riverworld series). In A House-Boat on the Styx, Charon the ferryman is dismayed to discover that he's got some competition in the transportation business -- a posh new riverboat has appeared on the Styx and there's no way his craft can compete. His fears of bankruptcy are relieved, though, when he's asked to be the janitor of the new boat which belongs to an exclusive men's club run by Sir Walter Raleigh. Raleigh and his colleagues spend their time playing cards and pool, smoking tobacco, and hosting fights (e.g., Goliath vs. Samson) and debates (Noah vs. P.T. Barnum: Which animals should have been saved from the flood?). They also have occasional business meetings in which they discuss agenda items such as whether or not there should be a Ladies' Day on the boat (yes, but Lucretia Borgia and Delilah are not invited) and whether poets should have their own Poets' Corner (yes, because then they won't be lounging across all the chairs, scribbling drafts on the pool tables, and boring everyone else with their recitations). There's almost no action in A House-Boat on the Styx and no need for characterization since all of the characters are already known to us. The story is almost all dialogue as, for example, Shakespeare defends the authorship of his plays, Solomon's Proverbs are called a hack-job, Confucius complains about the poets, the logistics of all of Henry VIII's wives attending Ladies' Day is discussed, Baron Münchausen is accused of making up stories, Sir Walter Raleigh is discovered to be setting up his witticisms so his biographer can record them, Jonah insists that his whale is copyrighted, and Eve laments that she never gets invited to Queen Elizabeth's parties because she has no pedigree.Much of this dialogue is very funny, but it occasionally comes off as a stand-up comedy routine when the jokes are transparently set up:Sir Walter Raleigh: ...Queen Elizabeth could have married a hundred times over if she had wished. I know I lost my head there completely.John Dryden: That shows, Sir Walter, how wrong you are. You lost your head to King James. Hi! Shakespeare, here's a man doesn't know who chopped his head off.Of course, it will be helpful to be familiar with these pre-20th-century characters and their "issues," but most adults will understand most of the allusions and the others can be easily investigated on the internet. I enjoyed the banter, but it was non-stop, so I was ready for it to end when it did. However, at the very end of A House-Boat on the Styx, some action finally did occur when Captain Kidd showed up. So now I'm eager to read the next installment, The Pursuit of the Houseboat.A House-Boat on the Styx and The Pursuit of the Houseboat are available on Kindle in the Halcyon Classics edition, which contains 48 works by John Kendrick Bangs for (at this writing) only $1.99. Both books are rather short and easily read in an afternoon.

It appears to be part one of a three part short story. I'm not even sure why an author would publish a short story into three really short 'books'. As a consumer, I'd wait until it was completed before deciding to purchase (whatever price-point it will be). With only 12 pages to go on, I will say that the writing is good, with solid editing, and the story was fun. Two friends are on a bus, but one keeps noticing the 'black cat' (reference to The Matrix) in the flavor of a shop. He sees the same shop four or so times and confronts the bus driver, but that is something I don't want to spoil - we are talking 12 pages here.Overall, a fun intro and obviously zero character development or conclusion.

Review "Debra may have written the book in a mere 9 months, but Theo reflects many years of recipe imagination and experimentation. If you try the recipes in this book, you will be pleased and surprised. Your only dilemma is where to start."—Huffington Post"If there’s one cookbook that every self-respecting Seattleite should have in their kitchen, it’s the new book from Theo Chocolate, the award-winning, bean-to-bar chocolate maker and all round Seattle treasure."—Seattle Refined  "This cookbook serves as both a prize for chocolate-lovers and a window into what motivates Theo from bean to bar. The cookbook isn't just full of chocolaty sweets, chocolate is bitter and its subtle sweetness brings depth to savory recipes. But the last section of the cookbook is for the truest chocolate-lover and offers redemption for my past chocolate failures — confections. They even have a cheat for couverture that doesn't require all that finicky tempering. [A] great gift to give to a chocolate-loving friend or loved one."—Everett Herald  "This is a cookbook for the serious chocoholic. Packed with mouthwatering color photos, tidbits about the origin of each recipe and helpful technique tips, Theo Chocolate is a love letter to the humble cocoa bean and a tribute to the authors' work together."—Shelf Awareness"Theo Chocolate is a rare breed: dedication, deliciousness, and daring have met and the results are spectacular!  This is essentially a guide book to the nuances of the luxurious cacao and its ability to grace your table from appetizers to dessert."—Tom Douglas, Restaurateur, Tom Douglas Restaurants "This is a must-have book. Theo Chocolate's vision to pioneer an organically sourced bean-to-bar program is now a part of chocolate history. Not only is the company a shining example of sustainability, the quality of the chocolate they use is incredible--it is carefully sourced and the flavors are super pure. And now Theo is honoring us with the ability to recreate their wonders at home."—Maria Hines, chef/owner of Tilth, Agrodolce, and Golden Beetle restaurants   “I am a big fan of Theo chocolate. This company is setting the standards for sustainability in a world that desperately needs ethical agriculture. Every ounce of chocolate they make is guaranteed organic. Just as important, the company works to improve the health and well being of all those who are affected by the operation, including the animals and the environment. And this enchanting cookbook is evidence of Theo’s other important mission--gratifying all of us chocolate lovers with ever more exquisitely delicious delights."—Jane Goodall, UN Messenger of Peace, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, and author of Seeds of Hope: Wisdom and Wonder from the World of Plants  “I am so excited to share this delightful book with my customers, friends, and family. Deb and Joe have done an incredible job of educating and inspiring readers by immersing them in their world of chocolate, from bean to bar and beyond. For those who haven't toured the factory, this book is a perfect close second to actually being there (too bad the paper isn't scratch and sniff!). A standout feature of the book is its inclusion of chocolate as a savory element in cooking, but all of the recipes are mouthwatering, versatile, and 100 percent from the heart, just as you'd expect from Theo.”—Naomi Pomeroy, chef/owner of Beast and 2014 winner of the James Beard Award for Best Chef Northwest  “For a devoted cacao-lover like me, there are few pleasures greater than enjoying a simple square of rich, dark chocolate, but getting my hands on the Theo Chocolate cookbook is one of them! Their unique story and innovative mission, coupled with page after page of savory and sweet, drool-inducing recipes, will not only show you how versatile chocolate can be, but also that, if you dream big enough, chocolate really can help save the world!”—Gail Simmons, food expert, TV personality, and author of Talking with My Mouth Full  "A reason to try your hand at homemade candy bars"—Oprah.com "The book’s 75 recipes branch out from sweet confections, and move into savory territory."—Publisher's Weekly"[The book] is, yes, a book for chocolate lovers. But the story within is one that reaches into the mysteries of human nature, the politics of agriculture and trade, and the secrets behind a good piece of chocolate."—Eater.com "Chocolate, it’s not just for dessert anymore...In these recipes, dark chocolate shows off its savory side, offering richness and complexity to sauces, chili, veggies, and pasta."—allrecipes.com"Chockfull of cocoa-filled recipes, ranging from granola to pie, Theo Chocolate: Recipes and Sweet Secrets from Seattle’s Favorite Chocolate Maker is truly a chocoholic’s dream."—Coastal Living"The inspiring story of Seattle’s fair-trade chocolate company, accompanied by sweet recipes as well as a broad selection of savory ones."—The Seattle Times"Give a person chocolates, you feed them for a day; gift a person Theo Chocolate’s cookbook, they’ll ride that sugar high for a lifetime."—Seattle Met "You will not find such creative and delightful chocolate recipes anywhere else."—The Washington Book Review"Yum!"—Brit + Co "Focuses on decadent treats perfect for this time of year." —Yahoo! Profound chocolate By wogan There are about 75 recipes, most with colour photos, in this book from the founders of Theo Chocolate, an organic and fair trade chocolate maker in Seattle. They have included a lot of information and photos about chocolate in this book: the Theo story, making chocolate, their sourcing practices, working with chocolate, how to taste it, store it, melt it, temper and dip confections. The first 60+ pages are filled with these details. The recipes themselves are very specific about the type of chocolate...70% dark, 85% dark, and 45% milk. Although truth be told when we made recipes we just used what we had on hand, dark and milk chocolate and the roasted cocoa nibs. One must definitely love chocolate and be dedicated to follow the directions. However my 14 year old budding chef to be grandson was able to make several recipes and had confidence he could do most of the others. The flavors and tastes of some of the recipes, especially those for the dinner recipes are complicated. Three examples are: one containing honey, saffron, chicken, cocoa and couscous, another has figs, fennel, almonds and chocolate, a different recipe has pumpkin, chocolate ravioli, sage, pears and hazelnuts.Recipes include chocolate for breakfast, savory small plates, dinner, cookies and bars, cakes, tarts and pies, puddings, frozen concoctions and sauces, drinks and confections. We made and enjoyed roasted squash with brown butter nibs (it also has roasted cocoa nibs), hello robin's mackles' mores (cookies with chocolate, marshmallow, graham crackers) and a dark chocolate stout Bundt cake.Cookbook collectors and chocolate lovers and cooks who like recipes with a different twist would like this book.

It runs the gamut ofchocolate recipes from cupcakes to confections and even chicken. There are your usual parings and some unexpected ones like chocolate and curry aswell as an Egyptian Cocoa nib Spice mix. The book has a huge varietyof recipes. There are things for the out of the box thinkers and things for thosethat like more traditional foods like Chocolate Sorbet. What I have tried so far has been reallygood. Such as the Brownies on p.96. However, I really have my eye on thoseCoconut Chocolate Cupcakes from Jennifer Shea's Trophy Bakery.Pros: Beautiful pictures and imaginative exchanges for traditional recipes.Cons: I would have liked to see more cake recipes. There are only 3 chocolate cakes andone vanilla with chocolate frosting, as well as one brownie. One part of the book mentions using grams, but the recipes are only in cups and ounces.I would have liked the option of gram measurements included as well.

This is a beautifully designed book with thick, heavy pages and a ribbon bookmark. Introductory chapters explain how the company was established and how chocolate is made, directly from the cocoa bean to the chocolate bar. The recipes are not just desserts but include breakfast dishes (granolas, breads, jams) to dinner entrees like chicken and squash. Of course, desserts are included (cookies, puddings, cakes, tarts, etc.)All of the recipes call for Theo chocolate bars (usually 70% dark chocolate or 45% milk chocolate) which cost around $4 per bar on the Theo website. They can also be purchased in bulk on Amazon. Of course, I suppose you could use any chocolate but the results might taste different.I tried the "Gooey Double-Chocolate Mocha Cookies" and they were good with a rich chocolate flavor. The recipe was easy and the instructions were clear. Many of the recipes call for one or two odd ingredients - for example, the "Preston Hill Bakery Chocolate Bread" in the breakfast section called for xanthan gum. An Internet search revealed that cornstarch could be used as a substitute. The bread is excellent! However, most of the recipes use average ingredients.Another outstanding recipe I tried was "CB's Million Dollar Chocoalte Peanut Butter Pie" which incorporate cream cheese, peanut butter, heavy cream and milk chocolate. A bit time consuming but a very delicious, decadent pie.All of the recipes have a beautiful color photo.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A superbly narrated experience By P. Mann As I write this, there are two reviews up. J. Mays's review takes the narrator to task for an ineffective reading. I would respectfully disagree. This is a wonderful reading, almost perfect for these stories. From "The Cop and the Anthem," in which a homeless man tries to get arrested so that he will have a warm place to spend the winter, to "Ransom of Red Chief," in which two kidnappers soon regret their choice of hostage when the boy proves too rambunctious, reader Michael Hanson is wonderful. He distinguishes between characters smoothly without sounding forced, but mostly it's the gentle manner in which he reads that is perfect for these stories. If it's possible for a reader to convey the life of a century ago merely through his tone, Hanson does so.The stories include the two I mentioned above, "The Voice of the City," "The Green Door," "The Hiding of Black Bill," "The Romance of a Busy Broker," and, of course, "The Gift of the Magi." For those who are not familiar with O. Henry's stories, this is a good place to start. Here's a better place, though.

Henry stories, the narrator takes the listener on two sets of adventures: The New York Stories (disk 1), and the Western Stories (disk 2). From the well known "The Gift of the Magi" to stories of wild west betrayals, the collection displays a wide range of subject matter including love, crime, trickery and distraction of the modern age. What brought this a lower rating for me was the narration of Michael Hanson. He has a pleasant, deep voice, but his delivery is done in a quiet, almost plodding way. This made it tough to focus on the stories because my mind was easily distracted. As someone who likes to listen to audiobooks at work or while driving, this made it far too easy to "tune out" in favor of other things, leading me to have to restart certain stories in order to catch on to the story. That having been said, though, I always really enjoy "The Gift of the Magi" which was a timely story to re-read for this time of year. I also really enjoyed "The Ransom of Red Chief" from the Western Stories disk, which featured a pair of kidnappers and the rambunctious boy they try to ransom. They bite off more than they can chew in choosing this kid! So...4 stars for the stories themselves, 2 for the audio version...middle of the road overall.

Henry in his "Complete Works" and having recently learned about the man and his background, I had to obtain an audiocassette of some of his works to hear how they were presented. After having seen the televised portion of "Red Cloud and Yellow Chief" (right title?)and having read the short story and listened to the audio version, a totally different viewpoint of that particular work is achieved. His use of the language and his method of describing things cause one to listen or read more closely at what he says or writes.I must apologize for not having the source material at hand while writing this review.

By mazinadel I think the publisher failed in his obligation to present this novella with honesty and correctness!!!The passages were broken, pictures imposed in the pages non relevant and silly just to said it is " illustrated" !Regret to purchase it !!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Short but interesting By Caroline Lynch The story is a little short, but does have a good storyline. I enjoyed this story. Hercule Poirot and Hastings are the main changed characters.

The Monkey Era, by Nevin

From the Author As you can probably tell, I did the cover myself. It was meant to be a representation of "The Thinking Man" as I wrote these essays during a time when I was thinking a lot about myself and the world. It was a stick-man figure because I didn't want to make it out to be something to be taken too seriously, but describe it for what I hope this book is, fun with serious moments. The title is a play on the title of my blog (I'm not supposed to include links in this thing). It also refers to the current state of the world that has humans perched comfortably atop the food chain despite not being the strongest. Hence, The Monkey Era!I hope you enjoy the book, my first book, and I promise there's more to come.

About the Author At the time this was written, I was a future aerospace engineer who punctuated nights of insomnia with spilled ink on paper. I was young, the instinct to survive and reproduce was present only in my recreational activities. Despite that, I had had a long life - one that sometimes left me brooding at times. I suppose that's where it all came from - death, dreams and destiny. I just hoped to be one of the writers you like.
