We are way beyond the ground hamburger tacos and are always looking for new taco recipes to try or inspire us. "Grilled Halibut Tacos" and "Salsa Verde" were the two first recipes from "Taco Night" that I tried. Both were very good. I like vegetarian and fish taco recipes and this cookbook has some interesting ones that I cannot wait to try this week (ex: "Grilled Portobello & Chile Tacos w/Smoked Crema"). Fresh ingredients and a dash of sophistication describe these recipes. If you like photos in your cookbook, this book is loaded with tasty looking photos to whet your appetite.

A lot of other useful information also in the book such as substitutions cooking times etc. so far very pleased with everything that I have done and made.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great cookbook and easy to use By Mrs. Miller I bought two of these, one for myself and one for another family member. We both love the wide selection of recipes and also the way the book is set up. The pages are in a ring binder format which is easy to open to the selected page and the book will lay flat. There are also nice tabs that divide the different sections. There a lot of tips and ideas at the beginning of each section and this would be a great gift for a new bride or for someone just learning to cook. It is also a great gift for an experienced cook. This particular cook book also came with an extra little cookbook that is connected to the big cookbook via the rig format. As an added bonus there is a card in the book that can be filled out and mailed in and will get you a free one year subscription to Taste of Home magazine! This is a gift that just keeps on giving and giving.

By Amazon Customer I was expecting a small-ish cookbook to give as a little christmas gift for a relative, but what I got was the encyclopedia of baking! It's a big, sturdy book with tons of pictures (perfect for browsing for a new recipe to try) and the spiral binding really is fantastic. It comes with a bonus book of a little over 120 recipes.Taste of Home is always a good cookbook, it's more involved than Betty Crocker cookbooks and always has neat ideas. This plus one of their little seasonal books is a perfect gift for someone just getting into cooking.

Bazzett I actually read an advance copy of this book more than two months ago and wrote my review then. I liked it so much that since that time I have read three more of Kelly Cherry's books, three interconnected short story collections that I call the Nina Bryant trilogy. They are: My Life and Dr. Joyce Brothers: A Novel in Stories, The Society of Friends: Stories, and A Kind of Dream: Stories. Like this book, they are all outstanding examples of the art of fiction in general, and the short story in particular. Cherry is an absolute master of the genre. Okay, here's my review of her latest -TWELVE WOMEN IN A COUNTRY CALLED AMERICA: STORIES, by Kelly Cherry.Where to begin? Well, I can't remember when I've LOVED a book of short stories quite this much. As any writer knows all too well, short stories are often a very hard sell in the book biz. But these stories, well, they are - ALL of them - just so damn PERfect! They are like tiny twenty-page novels, stories that seem to give you a look at a particular woman's whole life, with all its tears and laughter, sorrows and joys, triumphs and failures. There is simply not a clinker in the whole bunch.That said, I still don't know where to begin. But here goes. The twelve women featured here are all from the South - ten states: Alabama (twice), Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia (twice). They are ordinary women but each is unique. They are: Plummy, Ramona, France, Jeanne, Georgiana, Carolina, Sheba ('Sassy'), Jessie, Henrietta, Lorna Jo, Calista, and June. They range in age from ten (Jessie - "The Piano Lesson") to nearly ninety (Sassy - "A Life Long and Short"). But these ages remain relative, as you are often granted glimpses of various times in their lives, from childhood to old age. And it is this variety - in personality, age and circumstances - that makes this collection of stories - of lives - so rich and satisfying.I loved, for example, Sassy, who started out dirt-poor in the depths of the Depression, sleeping three to a mattress with her five younger siblings in Memphis, her hard-working mother always exhausted. But she "grew up to become Miss Sheba Moore, Bachelor of Arts and first-grade teacher," but she still remembers a Christmas when her only gift was a shiny red apple, and "sleeping in her mother's arms that Christmas night. She has never forgotten that even sadness can be a gift if it is shared."That detail of the apple brought to mind the ever-present orange in the toe of my own Christmas stocking, because my parents (also children of the Great Depression) remembered when an orange - or an apple - was a luxury. And now, nearing ninety, Sassy still misses her mother, remembering how she was always too tired to play with her children."If there is a heaven - which Sassy seriously doubts - the first thing she is going to do is look up her mother and take hold of her hand and ask her to dance. Her mother won't have to say she doesn't have time, she has to sweep and iron, mend and clean, she has to work. She'll let her smile grow wide, her dimple flashing, and the two of them will dance all over the pissy place."I also loved Texan Lorna Jo ("Serious Love"), who knew "how to throw her head back, square her shoulders, and walk like a woman. A fine art, this performance of gender, and presentation was critical ..." A successful professional woman who found love late in life, she "would remember what it was like to have been loved by a man who took love seriously."And there was Calista ("The Starveling"), a New Orleans ear ring artisan, ignored and emotionally abused by her vain wannabe-poet lover. Finally breaking free, she decides to try writing herself - about what she knows: "fear, grief, anger, loneliness, and fending off despair with work ... [and] self-reliance, adaptability, clarity of purpose, joking and friendship."In fact, these are all precisely the things that Kelly Cherry writes about in this marvelous jewel box of a book. Writing about what she knows. And every story here is a sparkling gem polished to perfection, and laced throughout with a sneakily sly, self-effacing sense of humor that will leave you chuckling, or even laughing aloud. I'll say it again: I LOVED these stories!Who IS this woman anyway? And why have I never heard of her? Especially considering she is a former poet laureate of Virginia and has written more than two dozen books of fiction, poetry, essays and even a couple translations of Greek plays. I mean this is obviously a wonderfully accomplished and skilled writer at the top of her game. And now that she's finally on my radar, I will definitely be reading more of Kelly Cherry's work.One more time: LOVED these stories; LOVED this book. Handing it off to my wife now. Cade is normally so calm and easy, even if intense, but now, he's lost his mind. Seriously, I was in a fit of giggles with this one. And to see him drag everyone else with him for all his sweet, yet crazy ideas. I mean I kept thinking that is a bad idea, but you know what they say about good intentions. And put a bunch of men together while freaking out is just a recipe for disastrous hilarity. :) And poor Anna has to put up with all that. Thought he's worth it most of the time :) LOL I absolutely loved this. It was a short and sweet treat while we are waiting for the next book. Which I can't wait to see how the Texas people go for our Louisiana boys :) LOVE IT! 5 Wolfy PAWS!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Cade & Anna By Lynn Smith Cade is driving Anna crazy. He is so over protective and treats her like she will break. She is pregnant not made of glass. He is determined to make everything easy for Anna. She shouldn't have to lift a finger. For every bright idea he has he enlists the help of his brothers and stepsons. Once all the men get together what can go wrong does. I laughed so much through this book. How four grown men can make such a disaster was beyond me. I guess Cade and Anna have been my favorites since the first book. They were the first ones I feel in love with and it is so wonderful reading about them starting their family. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

All of our favorite Le Beau family are here, with lots of laughs, and more. This is Cade' s first child and the book follows him and Anna and their friends and family through Anna's pregnancy. I loved watching this family go through the start of a new chapter in Cade & Anna's lives. And I can't wait to read of the baby growing up. Oh and I can't wait fir Richie' s story that I'd up next. In the meantime I have 5 Le Beau books to 're-read! Thanks for another great book V A! 5 stars!

From the Author This book expands the information and its processing that was introduced in the "Probabilitiy's Nature and Nature's Probability" books (scientist and "Lite" versions).  No proposed scenario so far has dealt in a feasible manner with this critical topic.  The non-material reality of information is stressed, especially with respect to instantiated algorithms, controls, and symbolic codes.  The book stresses an information science perspective, taking no stance on philosophical or theological issues that could be envisioned.

About the Author DR. DON JOHNSON has earned Ph.D.s in both Computer & Information Sciences from the University of Minnesota and in Chemistry from Michigan State University. He was a senior research scientist for 10 years in pharmaceutical and medical / scientific instrument fields, served as president and technical expert in an independent computer consulting firm for many years, and taught for 20 years in universities in Wisconsin, Minnesota, California, and Europe. Johnson is an excellent presentation of the parallels between the everyday practical cybernetics of computer science and the programming, control and regulation mechanisms of cellular life. The book is easily understandable by non biologists, and seems to be written on a college freshman level. It has good illustrations. It also has extensive citations and quotes from peer-reviewed literature. It's perspective and content are well supported, and should be readily received by a properly skeptical scientific community (of which I am a member). The book is a fun, quick, interesting read of under 150 pages. In my opinion, the book is amazingly underpriced for what it provides. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It provides a unique education that I have never seen available from any source other than technical scientific literature, but it is wonderfully explained in lay terms. This would be a great mini text for public high school AP Biology classes.

Bringing Life Sciences Into the Twenty-First Century By Morris Hedge This book addresses head on an issue which has been retarding understanding of life--failure to adequately consider its information processing aspects. After reading this book it will become clear why this failure must be corrected. One very critical reason is to put medical science on a more sure-footed path, one which more readily corresponds to reality; for example, the author points out that all human organs previously thought to be vestigial are now known to have functions--at the molecular level this means there is no "junk DNA".This book is very readable for anyone with a modest mathematics or science or computer science background to include, of course, computer programming. The light will really shine as the reader comprehends these topics as operating in profound ways at the lowest level of life. It made me wonder how such purposeful, directed information came to be in the very first cell, at the origin of all life.The book is replete with attributed quotes, references, and appendices expanding upon difficult topics introduced in the text. I believe it should be on the shelf of all scientists and mathematicians.

Deyes There are some science writers that quite simply have a knack for combining the detail of their subject of expertise with a talent for exposition that a wide audience can easily understand. Donald Johnson is one of them. After carefully defining the various types of information- functional, prescriptive and Shannon- that information theorists have set out in their realm of study, Johnson takes the reader on a tour of cellular gene expression by focusing on the digital code of DNA. Shannon information, which provides a mathematical measure of improbability without regard to functionality does not help us in the description of life since the digital code of DNA is rich in what Johnson terms "functional prescriptive information".While initiatives such as the Origin Of Life Prize have encouraged researchers to find non-super-naturalistic processes that might explain the origins of prescriptive information, no offerings to-date have withstood the test of scientific scrutiny. Indeed all known cases of such information invariably point to the work of a mind. Johnson emphasizes the relevance of probability in his espousal of this inference- the simplest form of life was found to be 10exp80,000 times more likely of having a mindful than a non-mindful source.Johnson repeatedly stresses how the information content of DNA is analogous to the information carried on a computer disk drive.Within such a schema, each of the enzymes that decode the information can be seen as individual computers that bring `meaning' to the code through the RNA that is transcribed and the proteins that are translated. 23,000 genes make up the human genome. And the multi-functional nature of these genes in self evident in the way that RNAs are differentially spliced and glued together.Johnson's perspective packs a might punch on the evolutionary edifice. Computer simulations and evolutionary algorithms such as MeThinksItIsLikeAWeasel and AVIDA have failed to show how evolution can generate prescriptive information since pre-specified targets, unrealistic protection of replication instructions and unrealistic energy rewards abound in each of these systems.While the battle over the categorization of junk DNA rages on amongst biologists, Johnson gives us a succinct and well-buttressed view on the subject: "Researchers are discovering that what has been dismissed as evolution's relics are actually vital for life". There is no evidence that new prescriptive information can be built up by genetic rearrangements such as transposition, inversion, duplication or point mutation. We can therefore understand Lynn Margulis' reference to the Darwinian claim as a `half truth' grounded in religious ferocity. This half truth forms the foundation for Johnson's final attack as he considers the merits of irreducible complexity and Craig Venter's recently produced artificial genome. Rather than showing how an organism could arise from scratch, Venter's enterprising achievement revealed the need for careful engineering of existing parts into a form that could be introduced into an existing organism.Johnson's writing style is captivating. The extensive range of resources he draws from only serves to build confidence in the factual accuracy of his case. What a terrific read. Sheer brilliance.

A wonderful atlas of Indiana wineries recipes By avid reader I am one of a group of ladies that havr thought about compiling a book Very similar to this. Now we do not have to do so, but now we have a book to go by. We sign off the wineries we have visited. Todd is the pastor at my church, and a very wonderful one at that.
