Doughnut: A Global History (Edible), by Heather Delancey Hunwick

Review “What defines a doughnut? It’s not such an easy question to answer. Must a doughnut be deep-fried or baked to truly be a doughnut? (answer: ‘Deep-frying is as essential to the doughnut as it is to the French fry.’) What sort of dough or batter must be used to make it a doughnut? Must a doughnut have a particular shape to qualify as a doughnut? And what’s with the hole? . . . Hunwick explores the history and evolution of doughnuts, their role in pivotal historical events from European colonization of the Americas to the trenches of World War I. They continue to play a role today: a fascinating chapter explores ‘The Imperial Doughnut,’ and the corporate machinations which have given rise to today’s doughnut empires. . . . Finally, Hunwick considers the cultural politics of the doughnut: from the novels of Harriet Beecher Stowe and the work of Marcel Proust, to the iconic Homer Simpson.”   (Hans Rollman PopMatters)

About the Author Heather Delauncey Hunwick is a food consultant with professional qualifications in cookery, business, and food history.

By lyndonbrecht The title, "Doughnut, a Global History" sounds like the title of a comedy skit, but the doughnut does have a history. Hunwick's short book is nicely written and excellently illustrated. The definition is something of a problem, but this author says that deep frying is essential to the doughnut process as is forming, not pouring. Sweetness, a category many morning doughnut lovers would think of, is not required; there's a doughnut in India made with ground chickpea flour and there's a meat-filled doughnut in Finland. I think a reader might have other definitions and perhaps might start with the 20th century doughnut in its commercial form, with hot coffee--Hunwick does consider that at length, but using her definition there's a global cuisine out there. Her first chapter is "Doughnut Defined," concerned with just what the thing is. Chapter 2 considers the "Historical Doughnut." Chapter 3 discusses the" American Doughnut," which I think is the most interesting chapter. Chapter 4 is the" Imperial Doughnut," which refers to the march worldwide of American style doughnuts from vendors such as Krispy Kreme (so it's a sort of marketplace imperialism). Chapter 5 examines the "Cultural Doughnut" which includes the doughnut in film, children's books, art (think pop art)--the doughnut has become a symbol of the workaday morning.Among the nuggets of information about doughnuts are these. The historical doughnut is essentially a fried dough food. The first use of the word doughnut (or the alternative donut) goes back at least two centuries, and was mentioned in a Washington Irving story from 1809. The origin could be French, Spanish or Dutch (the American reader will note that cuisine from all these came over with their colonists). A key figure in the modern doughnut was Adolph Levitt, who invented a doughnut machine in 1900 (which formed and cooked them much faster). US doughnut consumption was 4 billion in 1939. Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme are part of the story this book tells. There's also a slight nationalist tinge; the author says that Canada's Tim Hortons franchises sell 80% of the doughnuts in Canada. The book has an appendix of about 20 pages of doughnut recipes; the devoutly doughnuttish might think the book is worth it for that alone.

If you want to break away from the mythology about bears, this is an excelent start. Enos A. Mills is an excelent naturalist with many years in the outdoors.

The book (The Grizzly) interested me because California still had a few Grizzlies in 1919. The last California Griz was killed in 1922.Simply stated, this book is wonderful! It is a compassionate plea for the conservation of the lower 48's Grizzlies (obviously, the plea was not heeded).Enos Mills was the founder of Rocky Mountain National Park. He lived in a cabin in what was to become this National Park, for forty years. He was a bit of an itinerant and a nature lover. The story goes that Enos wanted to see the Pacific Ocean. He made his way across the west and when he got to the ocean he went to a beach. Perplexed by Kelp, he stopped a stranger on the beach to ask him what it was. That stranger was John Muir. This synchronicity started a lifelong friendship between the two. And Muir's influence on Mills writing is evident. Approachable. Descriptive. Kind. Eloquent. Passionate. Informative.Mills didn't consider the Grizzly to be a dangerous animal. Hence, he trailed Grizzly Bears for days on end, without carrying a weapon. He also believed that the Grizzly Bear's solitariness was an adaptive feature that the bear did in order to survive the wide spread slaughter of his species. Before hunting, Mills believed that Grizzlies were much more social.Maybe most people are glad that the California Grizzly is gone. We have way too much fear of anything that can kill us (although the Ursus' diet consists of mainly small mammals, roughage and insects). After reading this eloquent book, I am sad that Mills' peers didn't have the foresight to save this creature.I think the Griz and I could have learned to co-exist on the ridge.

Enos Mills beacame a fascinated observer of the great bear, and many of his observations were proven correct by later scientific study. The descriptions of complex bear behaviors and the evident thinking and learning of the grizzly were delightful. Authors were still 'borrowing' from this book a half century later. An essential read for anyone who cares about the grizzly.

Some of these I knew and a few were almost repeats of recipes earlier in the book but all in all it's a good and easy book. I'm going to let my teenage son make some. I especially like the steudel and coffee cake recipes.

It got me from the first page with the horrible crime against Amber Swan and her unborn child. Author described both the murder and the scene in great detail. Very thought provoking and felt like I was watching the movie. Where Lt. Kik Porter finds the newborn stuck inside the dryer, I was already crying. The scene with the 911 dispatcher felt so real! The killer showed no mercy with the kill, and I thought he'd surely kill the baby. Kik instantly fell in love with little baby Grace, and she stays on her mind which kept me seeing Kik as a real and warm person. The scenes with Detective Gates kept me laughing, seeing how he was still in love with her, from their patrol days as partners. The book kept me interested, flipping from page to page. I grew to love Kik, amazed at her strength, her honesty and her warm side. Many funny moments balanced the book, keeping me smiling. But the passion built into the book stole my heart. Just the scene where Kik pays a visit to the ailing mother of Amber Swan, had me bursting into tears. Amber was so afraid that her mother would die before her grandchild was born, and Kik's beautiful heart kicked in. The scene where she takes the new baby to the grandmother as she was dying made me sob out loud. The book is filled with several crimes and they were so vividly detailed, but quick and to the point. I can't say enough about this great read. Filled with crimes, Kik's heart as a Lt. in Miami, funny conversations between her and Gates, the interesting conversations between her and the Department Psychiatrist really add to the book. And the sensual scenes were amazing! I'm already on to Kik and can relate to some of her flaws and reasons she's afraid of a relationship. Can't wait to watch her grow and change. Now it's one night stands for her, but I feel something brewing. I can't wait until book 2 comes out. I'm already in love with Lt. Kik Porter!Great author with a great new series!

Realize, however, this book is not the complete novel. It is the introduction to the story. Primarily, it is a "character study" of the protagonist, Kik. Miss Welliver defines Kik while simultaneously moving the story along, mostly that part that relates to Kik's feelings, interactions, and personality, not the solving of the murder. That, I assume, will follow in a later installment.Kik is a woman of passion (and compassion), both sexually and humanly. She is a first-rate detective and a person with a heart that may later be a problem. She is realistically presented and believable. The reader gets to understand her as a person and to empathize with her.I rate this installment as 4 stars because of the well-defined characterization and the personality conflict between the players. At times, the descriptive prose seemed odd, not flowing naturally, Mostly, however, the narrative is easy to follow. By Father Ted I was invited to read and review this book.I've read this story a couple of times before posting this review. The story itself contains graphic violence and sex. The main female character Kik is potentially one that we could read about in a very long series - of which Rich Kills is the first. The front cover looks very professional and all the usual 'bells and whistles' are there that you expect from an author with their finger on the pulse of marketing and social media. What threw me was the writing style at times. It is naive and clumsy during the descriptive passages of the murder scenes for example, which points to a young writer starting out, yet the intimate scenes were hotter than those I've read in some supposedly 'erotic' novels. Those scenes pointed to a much more experienced hand! The Author Bio read more like a bio for a dating agency than a serious writer - which brought me full circle. I enjoyed reading the book, but I'm confused. Just who is Bea Welliver? I may have to read another instalment to find out.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great character development By Nancy Laronda Johnson Learning to Fly is a book of short stories with characters that are well developed, relatable and oh so real. They are stories that tell of a difficult moment in people's lives. In Fallen Leaves, there is the widowed mother who must consider taking in a difficult, elderly in-law. The question is why? Listen to the Rain, is about a young pregnant couple that must learn whether it's worth surviving past the chapter in their lives when neither of them say what they mean to and end the day in arguments. The character I related to most was the mother in Caring for Lily who is trying to find a daycare for her baby so she can return to work - truly that's what she wants, right? Then there's the blogger in For Good or For Bad with a good husband and two children, but who can't stop thinking about the one who got away. Finally, there's Is This Seat Taken? where a young pregnant woman at a bus station meets a young college guy. Are they both lost and looking to find their way?As I stated above, the characters are real and the book is well written. What was most amiss for me was that to me they weren't short stories, but excerpts of longer pieces, as none of them was a complete story. It seemed to be what the author intended, but I was always of the belief that a short story has a beginning, middle and end. These all lacked an ending, some more than others. The last story was the most mystifying. It was unknown what the conflict was and why the pregnant woman was at the bus station. At least with the other stories, you could think of how the stories could turn out and dream up possible endings. For the last one, however, since it's unsure what the conflict was, you have no idea what might happen.Still, Rachel Elizabeth Cole is a very good writer who is great at character development, something I admire in a writer. I would be interested in reading a complete novel by her to see how she does finalize stories.

In every case, though the story is short, the author pulls the reader right into the story. The characters and their stories are real ones abut everyday life and hardships. The author has managed to put forth a setting, develop characters and also insert in a plot in a short amount of time and space. This is the biggest challenge for the short story writer, and the author has met this challenge successfully. These stories are each separate and can be read separately, whenever the reader has a short spurt of free time. Since that is often my case, I welcome a book like this one. It is only an added bonus to find such good stories within the book. I highly recommend the book to anyone who enjoys good writing and good short stories (or to anyone who even does not particularly care for short stories--these are good).

The "fires" in his life! - Greatest influences By Broncos Fan When Raymond Carver died in 1988 at 50, the literary world lost a truly unique short story writer. Carver, a master at dialogue and often called a minimalist, created stories with substance where a mystery looms beyond the surface, stories so commonplace, with common people doing common things. It's true, the stories are laced with people who endure alcoholic sadness, financial burdens, emotional immaturity and those just searching for the dream that doesn't quite happen. We get a glimpse into their lives and these characters reflect everyday America whether it was the 60s or the 90s. Those characters are his life and they are us! Read any Raymond Carver story and you can identify with some element.Referring to the title, "Fires", Carver is talking about two strong influences in his life, one being Gordon Lish, at that time, a literary editor and the other, John Gardner, who said to become a writer you need the necessary "fire". The profound essays are titled "John Gardner, The Writer as Teacher", and the other is "On Writing." He offers excellent advice.Carver believes the strongest "fire" he had was his two children, a time he refers to as "ravenous and ferocious years of parenting." He writes of that epiphanous moment in a laundromat, laboring over washers and anxiously waiting with frustration over the next available dryer before picking up the kids. This parental chore was NOT what he envisioned great writers doing.Sadly, what he means about the children being a great influence in his words: "And I would always have them, and always find myself in this position of unrelieved responsibility and permanent distraction."The bulk of the book is poems that reflect his life, and the poem about Charles Bukowski is here. If you prefer his literary poems, a wonderful collection is here and just a few other short stories "Distance", "Harry's Death", "The Lie" and an amusing story, "Where is Everyone", the title later revised to "Mr. Fixit." If you know Carver's many stories were revised by Carver or possibly the editors, but this collection includes the longer version of "So Much Water So Close to Home"And, like any other Carver collection, this is especially good because of his essays on the "fires" in his life. ...Rizzo.

Raymond Carver's Minimalist Prose Provides Maximum Impact By A Customer Raymond Carver's "Fires" is a quick introduction to the author who personifies literary minimalism. In this slim volume, the reader is treated to essays and poems, as well as Carver's trademark: taut short stories that, in remarkably few words, paint a vivid tableau of so much of American life. Carver's subjects are ones that other writers shy away from: working-class stiffs and the mundane lives they lead. But Carver's magic lies in his ability to fascinate the reader with seemingly unfascinating topics. The characters' souls are bared, the torment of their lives is revealed, the desperation of their economic situations is rendered so masterfully, and in so little space, that the reader marvels at how Carver manages to accomplish the feat. For students of the writer's trade, Carver offers a valuable lesson in how to use minimal syllables for maximum impact.

They mark out the time of life when he is most deeply disturbed. So the poems about alcoholism ( although this is not the right way of saying it because they are never simply just about that) are among the most moving. His long poem on Charles Bukowski is very effective. It gives a sense of how this kind of 'portrait of another person' by seeing the world through his voice, can truly be an insight into the writer's own life also. Of course the poems about marital discord and break -up also tear at the heart. Carver writes "Someone else is raising my children, and bedding my wife" .All in all the honesty, the direct language and feeling, the storytelling power , the sense of appreciation of everyday seeing and feeling of life- all this work together to make these poems of fire ,poems which even when they tell of destruction give off a burning light.
