I have been widowed twice. This is the kind of letter my 2nd husband would have written. Permission to go on living and not hold on to the past. To not get lost in grief which is very easy to do. To live each moment for that is all we truly have. I would also not be able to follow all the instructions.....reading this was like hearing John say get on with it

This is a beautiful story and it had to be hard to write. I have been a reader for 69 years of my life aunt Agnes began teaching me at 3 years of age, only once in a great while you come across something short but with so much depth.

If you're looking to be surprised, puzzled, or just plain entertained, pick up this omnibus. There's something for everyone. More than twenty years in the making, UNPREDICTABLE WORLDS contains all of Jessica Knauss’s published and prize-winning short fiction as of March 2015 and a few of her best stories never before seen in print or ebook. Zany plots and outrageous characters will stretch your belief and tug at your heart. These stories contain exaggeration, elision, and disregard for “the real world.” Some even exhibit a tone of blatant optimism. However, they respect human speech patterns, admire good grammar, and hold proper punctuation in the highest regard.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great By Christine N. Ethier Disclaimer: ARC via Netgalley. It was guilt that made me read this book. Let’s be straight up about that. The publisher is one that I’m auto approved for on Netgalley, and I hadn’t read anything from them in a long time. So I picked this out of guilt. It’s awesome. As anyone can tell from the title, this is a collection of short stories, most of which are fantasy based. The stories range from the really short (flash fiction) to several pages. The book itself is loosely divided into sections - Magic Realism, Mircofiction, Rhinos, Hemingway, and Women. There is an afterword that goes into detail for some of the stories. The best section is the collection of Rhinoceros Stories, with Micro fiction being a close second. This doesn’t mean that the other sections are bad, but these two sections stand out the most. It does have to do with the power of the writing in the Rhinoceros section because, as many of you are no doubt aware, rhinoceros are hunted for the stupidest of reasons. Knauss’ section includes stories based around different species and ideas. There is a story of a woman who thinks she is becoming a rhino (and who falls in love with a man who loves books), the artist who is determined to do portraits of the Sumatran Rhinos, as well as a story about talking animals. There is also a series of flash fiction here. Knauss’s short stories in this section make her into the literary PR person for the species. If you love animals, you need to read this book for the Rhino section alone. The Micro fiction is good and sometimes startling, but in some ways it can be more touching than some of the longer works. This is especially true for “The World’s Largest Rocking Chair”. Not that everything is sweetness and light. “Stairs to the Beach” is particularly Twilight Zonish. While the other sections aren’t quite as good, they are not bad. There is a wonderfully powerful story called “The Consequences of Neglect and How to Make Amends” – which challenges the rhino stories as the best one of the volume. The Hemingway stories are mostly interlinked, though “El Novillero” is the best of the three. Furthermore, there is a disturbing story about teaching. This collection is by turns funny, touching, thought provoking, anger inducing, and faith affirming. It’s great.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Ordinary situations become deeply disturbing and scary By Seymour Hamilton OK, full disclosure. I know Jessica. She edited my books, The Astreya Trilogy and The Laughing Princess. So let's get that out of the way right now. However, on the other and more objective hand, I have read a great deal of science fiction and fantasy, and way back in the early 70s I wrote my PhD thesis on the great days of the SF pulps.Unpredictable Worlds doesn't belong in a genre, unless you're going to migrate most of the best short stories ever written into SF and F, which would just be silly. What I'm trying to tell you is that this is damned good writing that'll have you wondering how you missed that you were being sandbagged by a plot twist or two that you didn't see coming. Cf O. Henry, Saki (HH Munroe), Kipling and their followers in the noble art of compressing a story down to its essence.Jessica Knauss finds the deeply disturbing and scary in ordinary situations and everyday life. When she starts, all is as normal as reaching for your morning coffee, but before you're half way through, it's a whole other story -- one that should make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.Jessica had me from the innocent beginnings of her story about the teacher who goes to wildly unethical extremes to improve her students. I was sucked right in to the narrator's mind as if I had been reading a letter from a friend. It was not until things were going dreadfully wrong that I realized they'd been heading in that direction for some time. That's good short-story writing. And it's just one of the many in the collection. The art is to conceal the art -- which has become a cliché only because it's true. Jessica's seeming artlessness is really very clever, as she is.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating twists By Kristin Gleeson A collection of short stories of magic realism that explore fascinating angles from a woman obssessed with rhinos to a stairway to the beach for children and then a story in the style of Hemingway. They explore the person's deepest interior, their secret wishes that can become worst nightmares or frustrations that lead to a downfall. In all the world is not quite what the reader expects and through it the reader's own idea of the world and what is possible can be challenged. Fascinating.

Well done By J Hill The Gluten Free Diet for Beginners gives a comprehensive background on what it means to be gluten free and the foods you can prepare. There is also an excellent explanation of what gluten is, and how a gluten-free' diet can help you. A great book for anyone who wants to eat healthier food. The author did a great job. I would love to recommend this awesome book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It may seem like a difficult and limiting task... By Ali Childs Cutting out gluten from your diet may seem like a difficult and limiting task. Fortunately, there are many healthy and delicious foods that are naturally gluten-free! In fact, the most cost-effective and healthy way to follow the gluten-free diet is to seek out these naturally gluten-free food groups, which include fruits, vegetables, meat and poultry, fish and seafood, diary, nuts and so on... While grains that contain gluten are out, there are many naturally gluten-free grains that you can enjoy in a variety of creative ways. Many of these grains can be found in your local grocery store, but some of the lesser-known grains may only be found in specialty or health food stores. It is not recommended to purchase grains from bulk bins because of the possibility for cross-contact with gluten. I found this book to be a great guide to learn how to live gluten free, not only great information but recipes too. Wonderful guidebook for those who need to adopt a gluten free diet, as well as those investigating gluten free foods.

From nineteenth-century Georgia, where the bracelet is forged in fire, to wartime Leeds, a steam train across Europe, the violent backstreets of 1980s Scotland, present-day London, a Manhattan taxi, the Mojave Desert and back to Georgia, each writer weaves a gripping story of murder, betrayal and intrigue.

A must-have collection for fans of suspense fiction, Like a Charm is a mesmerizing, masterful story that makes for compulsive, just-one-more-chapter reading.

20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. sucessful collection By RachelWalker The basis of this short-story collection is an original and intriguing one: each story, while entirely independent, follows the life of a charm bracelet, from its creation in Georgia in 1803, through time and across oceans, until it eventually ends up back in Georgia again. In each story, the bracelet plays its part, almost always brining bad luck to the one who has come to possess it. It's a short-story collection that could almost be read as a quirky novel. The only downside to this idea is that the connections of each story, through the life of the charm bracelet, should in some cases be made a lot clearer - once or twice it was hard or impossible to create a logical connection between one story and the next, and the old "so and so bought in an Pawn/Antique Shop" device was greatly overused - then as a whole this collection would be more powerful than it is.The stories are incredibly varied; set in times and places as different as the American South in the 19th century to wartime Leeds in the 20th. In one, an accusation has dire consequences. In another, a train journey becomes anything but mundane. A sax player ends up getting more than he bargained for when he does a favour for a friend. A school-teacher's outing to London turns altogether more twisted. And a desperate writer makes a fateful purchase in exchange for inspiration...I am very much a devotee of the short-story; they are perfect for slotting into a dead half-hour, ideal if you want a single-sitting read. Quick pleasure, instant satisfaction - if they're of quality. And, if you pick right - maybe one of Ruth Rendell's beautifully twisted masterpieces, of Ian McEwan's elegant, concise works - then they can be just as good as a novel. While the stories here aren't really of that quality (well, except for one; I'll get to that in a minute) they do align into a very good, entertaining and satisfying collection. Each piece is taut and well-tuned, written with the sharp succinctity and ability to shock that marks out the best of the form. Some of the writers you will have heard of: Peter Robinson, Mark Billingham, and Lee Child, for example. Others maybe not: Emma Donohue, for example, whose story "Vanitas" is an excellent little piece set on a plantation in the South. And Peter Moore Smith, or Jerrilyn Farmer, writer of the penultimate story "The Eastlake School", a twisted piece of brilliance. There are definitely a couple of writers here whose work I will be endeavouring to find out more about after reading this. You may too. Here, all the stories are good (that is pleasing in itself - in every collection there are normally one or two mis-fires) but some of them are excellent: Robinson's "Cornelius Jubb", for example, or "Plan B" by Kelley Armstrong, to name just two among several. However, one story here does stand far, far above them all, and that is John Connolly's "The Inkpot Monkey". It's the sort of story of which one might say "it alone is worth the price of this book", but for the fact that it would be rather silly to actually contemplate spending $20+ on just 15 pages of text. The sentiment remains the same, though. It is an eerie, slightly surreal tale about a man suffering writer's block who goes to great lengths in order to rediscover his muse. Told with flair and punch, is explores several themes, such as, What does it mean to be a writer? More precisely, What of themselves do writers put into their work? What is required of them, what must they give in order to create and be inspired? And, ultimately, Is it worth it? And, having given it, What then? It is a brilliant, remarkable story, and is the real gem of this pleasing, ingenuitive collection. Despite the fact that the sometimes poor linkage takes away from the concept of this collection, Like A Charm is worth a look for fans of this form.

The voices of these collaborating authors are sinister, and every author is well-known in the mystery/suspense genre. But before you drop $21.95 for this book, be aware that these are not stories of murder and intrigue, but of death and misery. They are short stories with odd characters, titillating content, and startling revelations or actions. These stories reach the depths of obsession, insanity, and sin to show the deep, dark, even perverse sides of their characters, chilling readers to the core. The stories take place in America and England at various times in history, and each chapter and each life is linked to a certain charm. The first story -- an erotic tale -- shows how a bracelet is cursed. It goes on from there.... _Like a Charm_ is for readers who like their stories dark, explicit, and sometimes bizarre.

I hate to say it, but while I thought the premise was extremely creative...just imagine the story behind a charm bracelet and it's charms, the writing (different authors) fell flat. I really wanted to finish this book..and had to recheck it out of the library several times before I could finish it. Maybe the problem was that there were different authors, and not just one author with a vision. While this works with other authors, like those that collaborated on the Naked Came the Manatee novel, it didn't for these. I would recommend that if you are so moved to read it, make sure you get it from your local library.
