Former Lloyds of London financial whizz Charles Abernathy, the new owner and renovator of Barnesdale Manor, a grand estate located in the serene countryside just outside Bangalow, NSW, Australia, is stunned when he receives a registered letter suggesting he 'looks into things of the past'. The recluse Abernathy is even more miffed about the suggestion he should hold a scavenger hunt at Barnesdale Manor in order to reveal these 'things of the past'. Although he does not know many people in the village of Bangalow, he decides to proceed as it will give him an opportunity to showcase his renovated Manor. But when the guests become frustrated with the not being able to find all the items in the scavenger hunt, Abernathy gives them the ultimate clue that leads his guests to find a skeleton in the cellar. One skeleton is bad enough but when the dead body of one of the guests is also found, the police must be called. Did Charles Abernathy know of the skeleton or is he the murderer playing a silly game. One thing is for sure, to discover things of the past, Detective Jack Creed needs to be called in to solve another international mystery & crime. Mystery novel Australian author C T Mitchell delivers another police procedural masterpiece featuring Detective Jack Creed who is up to his armpits with a myriad of suspects including a socialite real estate agent, a post master with a suspect past and a town of gossiping back stabbers - all of which makes this whodunit even more intriguing!

It is a sparse mystery and I would like more clues instead of the very quick solving of the crime. Still it was okay to read and I finished the book.

The Turtles of Tasman, by Jack London

From the Publisher "Jack London is at his best - that peculiar best which is inimitable... Nothing is more important to note, however, than the soundness of the psychology of all these stories. They are made out of the deep fiber of humanity. By command over such material does Jack London hold his place in our literature. By command over the knack of clearly flowing, acid-biting English that often takes rich color." -- Boston Transcript

"Few collections of short stories from the pen of this author show a greater versatility of thought and literary style than The Turtles of Tasman." -- Boston Daily Advertiser

About the Author Jack London (1876-1916) was an American writer who produced two hundred short stories, more than four hundred nonfiction pieces, twenty novels, and three full-length plays in less than two decades. His best-known works include The Call of the Wild, The Sea Wolf, and White Fang.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Read "Finis" By Karl Janssen This is one of Jack London's lesser known short story collections. Despite the exotic title, none of the stories take place in Tasmania or the South Seas. Five of the stories take place in northern California, two in the Klondike, and one in an undisclosed location during the paleolithic era. London is primarily famous as an author of wilderness adventure tales and of stories imbued with socialist political ideas. While there are a couple examples of the former, the latter genre is curiously absent from this volume. No politics at all. As an overall body of work, this collection is weak by London's standards, but a few gems shine out from among the rest.In the opening story, "By the Turtles of Tasman", Frederic Travers, a responsible man of high standing, gets a visit from his dying brother Tom, a globetrotting vagabond. It's a study in contrast between the two men, who each embody opposing aspects of London's character: the successful workaholic vs. the wandering adventurer. The writing is very mature and insightful, indicative of some of the more accomplished work of London's later career.Another noteworthy story is "Told in the Drooling Ward", a first-person narrative as told by a feeble-minded inmate of a mental institution. London does an admirable job with the narrator's voice and treats the character with sensitivity and respect.A story I had never heard of that really blew me away was "Finis". A starving man, stranded along the Yukon River in winter, waits to prey upon an unsuspecting traveler in order to save himself. It is as bleak and visceral as London's famous story "To Build a Fire". Suspenseful and skillfully told, it's an excellent story that deserves to be better known. The other five stories in the collection are "The Eternity of Forms", "The Prodigal Father", "The Hobo and the Fairy", "The First Poet", and "The End of the Story". These range in quality from the disappointing to the forgettable. Like many of London's collections, you have to sift through a few pans of dirt to find the gold nuggets.

By AmyG I love that these recipes are ones that I can actually make and that at my family enjoys. Thanks, Jessica, for creating real food! The Grilled Mahi-Mahi with Pineapple Salsa is a slam dunk in my house, as are the Chicken Fajita Bake and Hands-Free Cashew Chicken (I'm all about easy!). The Apple Crowns with Maple Whipped Cream are a delicious after-school snack. This cookbook is perfect for my traditional, meat and potatoes eating husband and my more adventurous kids. I Like that she has the traditional stuff in a healthier, easy-to-make format without losing the flavor, as well as some great new dishes to try.I love your cookbooks, Jessica-- please keep them coming!

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Fast, Easy, Affordable Deliciousness! By welshone What a lovely cookbook! First and foremost, for me, a cookbook has to *look* delicious. A cookbook without pictures is like a vacation with no photos...I need proof of deliciousness! And the pictures in Ms. Fisher's book are scrumptious. There are so many colors, textures, and flavors that literally jump off the page; it's a tempting endeavor just to thumb through this book. The recipes themselves are wonderful! I've had the book for just over a week, and I've cooked from it five times. The Biscuit Pizza with Sausage and Peppers (p. 146) made me a hero in my household, and it was so easy to prepare. The biscuit crust makes it seem like you've slaved for hours, but it's really a quick prep. The accompanying Marinated Olive and Tomato Salad (p. 148) was really delicious. Don't miss the great spice mix recipes included in this book; Jamie's Spice Mix and FishMama Spice will save you money and up the "wow factor" in your meals. The Chicken Tikka Masala (p. 251) is out-of-this-world phenomenal. I've tried for years to replicated Indian fare at home, and the techniques and time savings on this dish make it a winner. My husband literally wept over this dish, it's that delicious. The accompanying Coconut Rice is so full of flavor, it won raves from everyone in our house. One of my favorite parts of this book is the pairings. The menus are pulled together in two-item increments. It's a realistic amount of cooking for 30 minutes, and I'm not killing myself to have a main and five side dishes. Simplicity rules. And when you've got great flavor and plenty of healthy ingredients, you really don't need to work so hard! (As my mother likes to say, "Work smarter, not harder.") I tend to overthink with menu planning, and the pairings in this book help me cool it with the fussiness. The tips and tricks generously sprinkled throughout the book are wonderful. So many money saving ideas, prep tips, and strategies. I love the author's focus on healthy, delicious fare that's fabulous without being fussy or frou-frou. I'm a huge Ina Garten fan, and Ms. Fisher's books have a permanent home right next to Ina's on my kitchen counter. Jessica Fisher knows how to cook, and her recipes reflect that. She's a straight-forward writer, an exceptionally gifted recipe developer and chef, and this book is going to be a lifesaver for me and my busy family. Do yourself a favor and invest in this book; your family will be thrilled, you'll save money on your food bill, and your taste buds will dance a jig!

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Excellent collection of fresh, inspiring and affordable meals By Mary Siemsen I'm a big fan of Jessica Fisher's two previous cookbooks, Good Cheap Eats and Not Your Mother's Make Ahead & Freeze Cookbook, and this new book is filled with just as many tasty, easy, affordable meals. Perhaps what I enjoy the most are the tips and suggestions that the author includes throughout. Easy tabs at the top of each recipe tell you whether it's suitable to make ahead, freeze, or make gluten-free. As a mom of a busy toddler (with a new baby arriving soon), this collection of recipes has been and will continue to be a dinner-saver for me!Another unique feature of this book is that every main recipe is paired with a simple side. I am always lacking inspiration in this department, and have already tried several suggestions (for instance, the quick and fresh blue cheese dip served with crudités during our regular Friday night pizza night had my toddler eating cucumbers!).Another bonus is the free content that the author provides over on her website, lifeasmom.com.... She has both a freezer meal plan and a month of meals plan to compliment and make the most of this new book. Love it!Keep the fresh, affordable and inspiring cookbooks coming, please!

Tiger shifter, Brochan Kinley, is tired of waiting for his destined mate, but maybe asking his current girlfriend to marry him wasn't the best idea - especially when she leaves him standing at the altar! But despite how much that messes with his mind, it doesn't excuse what he does next. Fenella Sinclair didn't mean for things to go so far, but she's always admired the beta of the local ambush. She's been infatuated with him ever since she saw him shift several years ago, and doesn't care if he claims she's too young for him. But her one moment of stupidity has consequences. When Brochan realizes Fenella is carrying his cub, he knows he should step up and do the right thing, but he's still feeling the sting of her sister's rejection. What's a tiger to do when everything he's ever wanted is within his grasp if only he'd dare to reach for it?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Too Short Short Stories By Sandra's Book Reviews "A very short story works the way a photograph does, or a one panel cartoon, or a moment in a movie trailer. It shows just enough to spark our imagination and invites us to do the rest. Ready? Let’s begin."In "Silent Pie," a waitress is captivated by the same, quiet diner and wonders what a conversation would be like with him."Before the Ripcord Broke" just had an appealing quote: "He held his arms out wide to the approaching earth. To live life – not with a period, but an exclamation point!" (27)These stories were generated from a fascinating concept. Like a painting or sculpture, they give you a shot, a glimpse of a picture from the story. Never revealing the whole story, they provoke questions and inspire the reader to kind of come up with the story in a series of "what ifs." What if you talked to this guy, what would he say? What if you cheated, how would you feel? What if you wandered into the woods, what would happen? The author states at the beginning that most of them are "very short stories"--in fact, they're sentences. I'm sorry, but one sentence is not a story. How can it be? A photograph or a cartoon can actually show a lot more of a story, and I guess a sentence can too, but not so much. Example: "I wrote a scripture, now lost." Sure, you might wonder how this person lost the scripture, but other than that, there's really nothing more there. There is no plot or characters, and it certainly didn't do anything for me. I guess I'm used to being more involved with a story. That's the way it's been, and that's the way I like it.I've never read short stories like these. Typically, I'm used to stories (even short ones) having a beginning, a middle, and an end, which these stories had none of, but it was kind of fun experimenting with the open-ended questions. Of course, not every story was great, but they certainly opened up my views on the traditional structure, how there are many forms and styles to it. Basically, writing is an art, and there is no right or wrong. That's what I love about art!

Bradley Some may go into this collection of short stories with the mindset that they are nothing special, but they would be wrong - and too quick to judge. I myself was skeptical at first because I'm not a frequent short story reader. Then I stopped being my close minded self and started reading the damn stories. I was trying to be more open minded. It paid off.I went into these stories having relatively no idea what to expect. After the first few stories I still felt iffy. Hours upon hours later, I was sucked in and couldn't stop scrolling. The short and very short stories were attention grabbing for what they were. Simple, confusing, awkward, blunt - pick any adjective because whichever you choose would describe one or more of the many stories throughout.Truthfully, I was shocked by how many of the stories reflected my own life. A bully stuck in the car with the kid he beat up - been there, sadly done that. Two grown sisters that don't see eye to eye - sounds familiar. Reminiscing while moving out of a dorm - yep, a recent feat of mine. Watching time fly by - always. I noticed these unavoidable parallels immediately. Family issues. Friendship issues. Relationship issues, right down to the names. It was scary, but refreshing to read that other people understand. The author clearly comprehends that we are all connected in different ways, to various individuals. It is and will forever be the way life works. Also, I would love to list a few of my favorite short stories below with tidbits of commentary:•Lay [Reminded me of my dog that aged before I even noticed]•The Isomorphs [2nd favorite story]•Four [Basically my family members]•The Last Story of the Evening [Always trying to find meaning]•Argumentative Speech [This one is important]•Don't Ride with Strangers [Favorite story]•Candy Witch [Jenny is me]There were loads of stories that made me laugh, grimace, or tear up but these were the few that really stood out to me.I was pleasantly surprised with these stories as a whole. The very short stories packed a punch, but I don't want to list any because that would ruin them for future readers. In the end, I'm glad I had the opportunity to read this collection of stories and I would like to thank the author for allowing me to read and review his work. I would recommend to those who enjoy quick contemporary or anything on the more realistic side of the spectrum.

To my surprise I very much enjoyed this book filled with short and very short stories. Before the Ripcord Broke is a book filled with stories about people who try to connect with others... Not always successfully. It captures these little moments, tiny really, where it becomes clear that people will connect...or not. It also sheds light on relationships, good and bad ones, healthy and very unhealthy ones, between family members, friends and colleagues. Each story is so very different and yet they flow together nicely, making the collection a whole. There are fun topics and serious ones, strange topics and ordinary ones which kept me interested as I kept reading on and on.Charlie Close again managed to fascinate me with simplicity, humor and, well, weirdness that is so very wonderfully captured within his every-day stories.

Eleven unique short stories that stretch from a rural Canadian Mennonite town to a hipster gay bar in Brooklyn, featuring young trans women stumbling through loss, sex, harassment, and love.

These stories, shiny with whiskey and prairie sunsets, rattling subways and neglected cats, show growing up as a trans girl can be charming, funny, frustrating, or sad, but never will it be predictable.

I love it all, but I think my favorite is Lizzy & Annie, especially the ending *swoon*. Some of the stories hit me with such a hard punch. Other Women was extremely difficult and painful to read. How To Stay Friends was more relatable than I'd like. Honestly, most of it felt like home in a way that's like someone you love rubbing your back as you puke into your own toilet. As a trans woman, this felt really important to me to have in my life. It repeatedly made me cry in a very cathartic sort of way. Aren't enough stars for this.

I did not know what to expect going into this book, but as a short story lover, I enjoyed them. It gives you a glimpse into the life of different transgender women, with one story standing out told from the perspective of a cat. If you're a short story lover and this is a topic that intrigues you, give the book a try.

Casey Plett's writing takes us on a journey with her characters...I felt I personally knew each character and the end of each story left me wanting to know more. I found this book so engaging, carrying on with it long after I usually turn the lights out at the end of the day. I couldn't put it down. Read this book! You'll love it!!

This book is a collection of short stories from senior citizens who attend my computer classes. Some students were former housewives, veterans, and factory workers. Even though many grew up in the era of segregation, once in class people started talking and sharing stories. The integration of thoughts, backgrounds, ideas, shared goals, and similar life stories was so powerful that even when the professor had finished class, students stayed to laugh, bond, and to work on assignments together.
