This is the first I have read of Robertson's but I found myself pleasantly surprised. HIs writing style matches the retelling of Beowulf, though some of the character titles and information were hard to retain simply because as a short story, it's hard to make a lasting impression to make me remember who is who and what their title is. This is a great short story and the overall arc from beginning to end is interesting and captivating.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Most excellent cautionary tale By Isa McLaren I found it thoroughly engaging and humorous, much in the vein of the comedy movie Conan the Barbarian. It didn't take long to get used to the language and sentence structure and the story quickly took the forefront of my attention. Others have compared it to Beowulf but this was much more entertaining and easy to read.

Hard to build a character in so few pages, but a relatively good job. I will try Melkorka from this Author and see how that goes. I recommend this for those into epic style short stories. You could see where this would fit into a larger world.

All except one of the stories were written this year, and every one offers something intriguing, weird, macabre, or shocking to tantalize the reader. One of the highlights is David Hewson’s “Last Exit to Fuengirola,” in which an ex-con finally gives in to revenge. However, Hewson keeps the reader in the dark until the very end about some key facts that shed a whole different light on the ex-con and the motives behind his actions. “Angela’s Alterations,” by the redoubtable Peter Lovesey, is both dark and very funny, and “Night Nurse,” by Cath Staincliffe, tells the sinister story of a murderer with only the finest of motives. All in all, an excellent collection—every one of the stories is a treat to read—and a fine introduction to British crime fiction. --Emily Melton

The books combine humor and murder in a total package of entertaining and fun southern adventures. At the same time, Jada sketches in addiction/recovery issues and childhood angst with a deft and compassionate touch. Jada spent the first twenty-odd years of her life in rural Kentucky, many of those years without electricity or running water. The stories are emotional, funny, scary, and wonderfully written.This description of Fresna, in the story, “How the Crow Flies” is beautiful.“Fresna stood in front of a mirror comb in hand, and attempted to smooth her gnarled hair, which resembled wet rodent tails around her pale face.”I love how the character Mae Rue, in “Alien Act of Honor”, gets her name. I also enjoyed the subtle humor in this Science Fiction story.“You are smarter than you appear, Keeper of the House Dust.”This smart engaging collection of stories will keep you entertained. I also think you’ll want to read it more than once. Another nice feature of this collection is the explanation before each story. The best of Carver By Doug Vaughn Raymond Carver is unique among contemporary American men of letters in that he is known almost exclusively for his short stories. Though he published other books, most notably collections of his poetry, his real genius was in the abbriviated summation of ordinary human experience in the short prose form.This volume is a great introduction to Carver's stories because it represents a selection of his best work from every phase of his career. It is clear from the first story that his special gift is in somehow making a slice of life universal. His stories have hardly any plot and character is revealed rather than described. The essense of his character's lives are distilled into a few scenes wherein the reader can grasp a universe of unspoken meanings. The simplest things in Carver's hands take on a depth of meaning and a resonance that tends to haunt one long after the story is read. There is no overt artifice employed; the stories are deceptively simple. Yet all of these stories, like good poems, pack lots of meaning into a compressed form. His stories are not so much 'about' love, grief, deception, failure, longing and hatred as they are captured moments that embody these elements of the human condition and allow us to really feel what the characters feel. The very lack of exposition and detailed context is part of what makes these moments so powerful. Like a Rorschach ink blot, the short scenes depicted can call forth from each reader a variety of different interpretations and meanings. That is perhaps what is really great about these stories. Every reader can agree on the overt content, but no two are likely to agree about what they really mean, despite almost everyone having a strong emotional response to them. This is unique and superior writing that no lover of literature should miss.

What he'd be writing now By Rocco Dormarunno People who consider Raymond Carver to be a strictly minimalist writer should really read this book from cover to cover. What they will discover is a career on the cusp of change, just before the author's life was tragically cut short. The stories are presented in chronological order. The opening dozen stories or so are classics of minimalist style which reaches its peak with the devestating 3-page story "Little Things" in which a child is literally torn apart by its parents divorce.But Carver's tone and style changes in the stories that follow. "What We Talk About When We Talk about Love" and the gut-wrenching "So Much Water So Close To Home" take on a new level of story-telling where Carver gives us a more intimate look at his characters. The last two of the previously published stories are nothing like the earlier stories. In "Cathedral", a typical Carver married man--distant, cynical, and slightly smug--makes surprising contact with another human being, presumably for the first time, in the most unlikely of situations. It is almost a salvation. "A Good Small Thing" (which was a revision of an earlier story called "Scotty") is nothing less than a masterpiece. In Carver's earlier career, this story would have ended bitterly and, perhaps, indifferently. Instead, this story ends up with an astonishing flavor of hope, forgiveness, and even closure. The seven "New Stories" at the collection's end just drive home the fact that Carver was really moving forward or at least in a new direction. I defy anyone to read "Intimacy" or "Elephant" and say, "Typical minimalism." I would place a heavy bet that the reader would reply the same way I did, "Damn! Damn! JEFFREY MCMAHON Raymond Carver has been compared, rightly, to Chekhov because of his ability to absorb the reader in a "small" story and say something profound about the human condition. Absent in Carver's stories are stereotypical characters. For example, in "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love," we read a story about a heart surgeon, Mel McGuiness, who is obsessed with preaching the virutes of absolute love to his wife and two friends, another couple. As we read the story, we see evidence that Mel is the embodiment of the absence of love. He is imperious, bullying, dogmatic, control-obsessed, fearful of life. Yet Carver doesn't allow us to dismiss Mel so easily. As Mel pontificates on love and gets more and more drunk, we are afforded glimpses of Mel's profound wisdom, which shows that there are two Mels, a tyrant and a vulnerable searcher of truth, that are warring against each other. Mel, the searcher of truth, knows there is a more profound, permanent love than merely carnal or erotic passion. At one point in the story, he confesses, in a moment of drunkenness, that he is completely ignorant of life. We sympathize with Mel's passion for "ultimate love," yet we are at the same time appalled at Mel's bullying and vanity.Mel's character is indicative of the kind of complexities and contradictions that Carver dramatizes in his very readable stories.

By A Customer I have an original 1888 copy of this book, and did research on Elsie Leslie, the original 1888 Broadway star of the play(she was only 7!). This book will delite anyone, young or old. It shows the humanity of a man that really regretted being a thief. A great story, with wonderful morals (something usually not seen or taught these days). THIS IS A MUST READ!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Little Mother By Patricia Reilly Hague My grandmother gave this book to me when I was seven, I believe. That would be about 1950, and initially I was very interested in the staged photos. I have since learned that there was a film made and these must be stills from that production. The little girl is so protective of her mother, who is rather adlepated and neurotic, in my opinion. Everyone seems to want to avoid upsetting the mother, whose main occupation appears to be getting dressed up to go to parties!Editha is a very sensible and sensitive little girl, wise beyond her years, and keeps her head when confronted with a rough burglar. Her bravery and love for her mother deeply affect the man, hopefully to redemption.I can remember being somewhat annoyed with the mother for her "helplessness", and commending Editha for her cool headedness. Even at an early age, I admired her strength in the face of danger, and I believe I have always tried to be like her! I think my grandmother chose well, and I will share this with my granddaughter, too.

A life is a fascinating thing. It grows, develops, learns, and even occasionally thrives. But other times it doesn't. Sometimes a life just doesn't know where to go, or how to grow, and stutters, faltering when it matter most. Lacking guidance, the life forms in such a way that the world around it seems to hold little regard for it, seeing it as a thing that deserves neither its care nor its value. Other lives, the people that make up the world around it, are foreign, and distant. The rules of existence that governs it are seemingly vicious, and arbitrary. The feelings and half-formed advice of other lives that have developed differently are entirely unhelpful. Such a life might strive to find meaning, might strive to find some form of appreciation in the lives of others. Once the terror of rejection and fear of the unknowable inhabitants of the world is overcome. It might try to find a ray of hope and light within those who walked paths with purpose, who strode through the world tall and mighty, earning the respect and admiration of the world. A world that treated the other life as little more than a shadow, devoid of purpose and unworthy of acknowledgment. Such idol worship however can only lead to disappointment. After all, no life is free of pain, no person perfect, and a life that follows a path carved by the brilliant and the strong, could very well find itself left in darkness when those it thought were strong, turn out to be just as weak and flawed as it itself... Such a life might not survive that kind of revelation. Such a life might find it very easy then, to die.

By TowerOPower Throughout this short story collection, Lou Gaglia weaves together the absurd and serious, somehow making everything believable. These are stories that are easy to get lost in, and you'll find an exciting new adventure in each tale. There's never a dull moment in this book. I highly recommend Gaglia's work to any fan of short stories. .Gaglia has a knack for taking mundane, everyday tasks—like pumping gas, selling pools, and getting your car repaired—and turning them into the funniest and most damn profound stories you've ever read. Don't let the title fool you. Gaglia's stories are full of good advice. Just don't take any of them too seriously or you may find your life in shambles.I received an advanced reader copy of Poor Advice and Other Stories directly from the author. Having been a fan of Lou Gaglia's work for several years, I was honored when he asked me to reader an advanced copy. After reading the collection, I was truly blown away by Gaglia's talents.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. “Little Leagues” also felt like it could have been my neighborhood growing up By Anthony I find that the more heartfelt and certainly less humorous stories are fantastically potent. I ran “Little Leagues” in Umbrella Factory Magazine a few years back. At the time I read “Little Leagues” I knew it was a higher caliber story than many I was reading at the submission desk. “Little Leagues” also felt like it could have been my neighborhood growing up. There was a very universal feel to it. When I reread it in Poor Advice I felt the same way. But it wasn't my favorite Gaglia story anymore. “This Is My Montauk” has to be one of the most quiet, beautifully heartbreaking stories I've ever read. It's the story of two guys who live on Long Island and and they go help out a dead friend's mother. It's not a particularly long story. There is more going on in this small space than many novels I've read. Perhaps this is the definition of a good short story writer: a writer who can swing from the very funny to the very serious and still retain a sense of universality.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Dead-On Funny Book By Susan Tepper Lou Gaglia must be a funny/fun type of guy because his debut story collection is dead-on funny. The plots are similar to how Seinfeld approached plot: find the humor and quirk in the everyday experience. This is what Gaglia does in this book. His character voices, whether told in first or third person point of view, are dark and twisted funny. This book made me laugh out loud. It's also written from an intelligent brain. Anything really funny has to come out of a sharply perceptive mind and imagination. I could have read more. Terrific. Highly recommended.
