With 2-Day Diabetes Diet, there are no forbidden foods and no carb-counting. You just need to restrict what you eat for 2 days a week. You will see the pounds drop off, your blood sugar levels stabilize, and your waist shrink.Diet just 2 days a week to drop the pounds and dodge type 2 diabetes! In a recent study, researchers in the UK found that restricting carbohydrates just two days per week was superior to a standard, daily calorie-restricted diet for both reducing weight (about 9 pounds lost vs 5 pounds) and lowering insulin levels (reduced by 22% vs 4 %). Based on this and other research indicating that safe weight loss is the key to reversing and preventing diabetes, Reader's Digest has partnered with registered dietitian and diabetes expert Erin Palinski to distill the latest science to create an easy-to-follow plan that allows people with diabetes to have their cake—and other carbs—and still keep their blood sugar under control. A diagnosis of diabetes can be overwhelming and frightening, and even many of those who have lived with diabetes for years often struggle with the question of what they can eat. The 2-Day Diabetes Diet makes it simple—there are no forbidden foods and no carb-counting. You just need to restrict what you eat for 2 days a week—and research suggests you will see the pounds drop off, your blood sugar levels stabilize, and your waist shrink. On those 2 days a week, you follow the low-carb “Power Burn” program, and consume approximately 600 calories of selected foods. What does that look like on your plate? How about a 2-egg omelet with onions and peppers plus yogurt for breakfast; a hearty bowl of carrot soup plus fresh fruit for lunch; meatloaf and broccoli for dinner with milk; and a cup of sweet grapes for a snack? Or Canadian bacon and spinach for breakfast with a cup of milk; vegetable soup and half a banana topped with peanut butter for lunch; grilled chicken and zucchini over pasta for dinner; and an orange with a cup of milk for a snack. With real delicious food filling your tummy, you won’t believe it all adds up to only about 600 calories. For the rest of the week, you follow a delicious 1500-calorie-a-day Mediterranean-style eating plan—we call these “Nourishment” days. You can enjoy a bounty of brightly colored fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and even a few treats. The book will include:

  • A 2-week day-by-day meal plan that lays out sample Power Burn and Nourishment days
  • More than 60 meal options, including restaurant and frozen food options, so you can customize the menus to your taste and lifestyle
  • More than 50 delicious diabetes-friendly recipes
  • An optional easy walking and strength-training program to boost results even more
  • Stress-reducing exercises to help you ward off cravings and reduce hunger
  • Success stories from the 10 men and women who tried the plan with amazing results!
The plan is designed to be flexible—you can do your Power Burn days whenever works for you, and you can personalize almost any meal to suit your tastes—and will work for both people with type 2 diabetes and those at risk.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. On My Recommended List! By Jackie Since I’m a diabetes cookbook author, as well as a registered dietitian nutritionist, I’m often asked what diabetes books I recommend. I base my recommendations on books that provide science-based information written in a friendly way with real, doable diet information, including recipes. I found that here! If you have type 2 diabetes, I highly recommend this book by Erin Palinski. Frankly, the title sounded too good to be true to me at first glance. But then when I actually took the time to review the book, I was pleasantly surprised to find the details were factual and the plan was simple and flexible. Erin makes diabetes eating so approachable. I’m a fan of her Mediterranean-style “Nourishment” eating plan!

Late one brilliant April afternoon Professor Lucius Wilson stood at the head of Chestnut Street, looking about him with the pleased air of a man of taste who does not very often get to Boston. He had lived there as a student, but for twenty years and more, since he had been Professor of Philosophy in a Western university, he had seldom come East except to take a steamer for some foreign port. Wilson was standing quite still, contemplating with a whimsical smile the slanting street, with its worn paving, its irregular, gravely colored houses, and the row of naked trees on which the thin sunlight was still shining.

Alexander's Bridge, by Willa Cather

Review “This scholarly edition does justice to Cather’s notoriously particular production requirements. The material and editorial quality of the book meets very high standards, with the paper, the visual presentation of the words on the page, the rigor of the editing and proofreading, the thoroughness of the notes, and the detailed explanation of editorial decisions all illustrating impeccable scholarship. The historical essay and the illustrations provide useful information. . . . This volume stands as a model of scrupulous, indeed loving, scholarship. It offers a fully elaborated, beautiful text that even Cather, despite her effort to bury the book, might be proud to acknowledge.”—Great Plains Quarterly (Great Plains Quarterly 2008-06-04)

From the Publisher Bartley Alexander, an engineer famous for the audacious structure of his North American bridges, is at the height of his reputation. He has a distinguished and beautiful wife and an enviable Boston home. Then, on a trip to London, he has a chance encounter with an Irish actress he once loved. When their affair re–ignites, Alexander finds himself caught in a tug of emotions — between his feelings for wife, who has supported his career with understanding and strength, and Hilda, whose impulsiveness and generosity restore to him the passion and energy of his youth. Coinciding with this personal dilemma are ominous signs of strain in his professional life. In this, her first novel, originally published in 1912, Willa Cather skillfully explores the struggle between opposing sides of the self, a facility that was to become a hallmark of her craft.

From the Back Cover Alexander's Bridge (1912), Willa Cather's first novel, tells the story of Bartley Alexander, a successful engineer torn between duty to his career and wife, and his passion for the Irish actress Hilda Burgoyne. In spare but often searing prose, Cather's taut novella traces a mid-life crisis of self-doubt and disappointment that ends in a spectacular catastrophe. Cather's portraits of indomitable women on the Nebraska frontier in the novels O Pioneers! and My Antonia are well-known, but Alexander's Bridge shows her working in another, equally important mode, using urban settings and the figure of the bridge-builder to analyse America's emergence as an international industrial power at the turn of the twentieth century. Both anxious and celebratory, Alexander's Bridge anticipates The Great Gatsby in trying to reckon with the social and emotional costs of a new era in American life.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A Bridge to Her Better Work By M. Allen Greenbaum This was Willa Cather's first novel, and, while showing glimpses of her later talent, is mostly disappointing. The metaphor of the bridge--the conduit to both the past and the future--figures prominently in this story of a Boston architect torn between his ongoing "mid-life" crisis and his energetic, passion-filled past. The story contains some heavy-handed symbolism (e.g., the bridge), melodramatic action ("With one [hand] he threw down the window and with the other--still standing behind her--he drew her back against him), and awkward phrasing: "'He was simply the most tremendous response to stimuli I have ever known.'"Still, the story moves along well, and there is an interesting Henry James-like contrast of Europe and America. The beginning nicely portrays the Boston upper class, and the dramatic conclusion includes passages of great strength and imagination. It is in this last chapter, especially, that her skills are most evident. Willa Cather is the Pulitzer Prize winning author of "O Pioneers!" "My Antonia," and other great works. Definitely recommended for those with an interest in her work.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. An ersatz Edith Wharton masquerading as Willa Cather By D. Cloyce Smith Light on plot, heavy on symbolism, and a little predictable, Cather's first novel (a novella, actually) still contains moments of brilliance, especially in its strong characterizations and occasional flashes of wit. The story concerns a Boston architect who is contendedly married but suddenly embarks on an affair in London with an old flame from his youth. He soon becomes tormented over his double life but finds himself unable to resolve his conflicted feelings. Heavily indebted to the Gilded Age novelists, "Alexander's Bridge" reads like a typical first novel from a writer who shows a lot of promise.Later in life, Cather wrote an essay entitled "My First Novels (There Were Two)," as close to an apology for a first novel as most writers ever make. She admitted that most of the "younger writers" in her peer group followed the manner of Henry James and Edith Wharton, "without having their qualifications"; she "thought a book should be made out of 'interesting material.'" Only while writing her next novel, "O Pioneers!," did she realize that "taking a ride through a familiar country"--the rural Nebraska of her youth--was "a much more absorbing process." Nevertheless, "Alexander's Bridge" hints at the virtuoso novelist she was later to become, and it's certainly better than many writers achieve in an entire lifetime.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Cather's first novel By Bomojaz Willa Cather's first novel, it concerns the life of engineer Bartley Alexander, the bridge he's building across the St. Lawrence River in Quebec, and the triangular relationship he has with his wife and mistress. The bridge becomes a symbol for his failures: the great bridge he's building collapses (causing his death) at the same time his affair with Hilda collapses. Cather had only published short stories before this, and was reluctant (though resigned) to writing a novel. It's a short work, and Cather herself thought it was shallow and trite (she almost disowned it). Her next work, O PIONEERS, would be much better.

15 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Brilliantly Repulsive By Roger Brunyate Nobody can say Paul Theroux isn't good. If he hadn't been, it would be easier to read these stories, or easier to put them down, whichever. But he has the skill to draw you into his world, his dark, twisted, over-the-top world, so that you read on despite yourself. I found the first story in the collection, "Minor Watt," so repulsive that I almost threw the book away then and there. But I made myself a deal: I would read the first six stories, plus the longest, "Siamese Nights" (at 50 pages, almost a novella), and call it a day. Having now finished almost half the book, I can now say I am more in tune with Theroux' dark vision and less easily shocked. But I do not like the infection that has taken hold of me, and have no wish for further contact.Minor Watt is a fabulously rich real estate developer and collector of artistic rarities from all over the world. Near the beginning of the story, in a negotiation with his almost-ex wife, he does something that at first I took to be an accident. But as the story went on, and this one event became multiplied a hundred times, I came to regard him with the same repugnance as if he strangled kittens for pleasure. The story took a trajectory that would become frequent in this collection: something either bizarre or repulsive repeated obsessively, beyond the bounds of normal reason, to the point where one becomes almost desensitized.Although often unrealistic, it is never entirely surreal. Minor Watt's monstrous behavior also makes a point about the art world -- a milieu to which Theroux returns in a later story, "Mrs. Everest." Besides, he gets something of a comeuppance at the end. The protagonist of the title story, "Mr. Bones," is a henpecked husband who becomes a wildly different person when he starts rehearsing for a blackface minstrel show put on by his church choir. The abandoned husband in "Our Raccoon Year" holds it together for a while looking after his two boys, but then gets involved in a battle with varmints that reaches epic and cruel proportions. The morals of the stories are mostly right, but the nightmare excesses Theroux puts his readers through leave a sick taste, not matter how the stories turn out.The long story, "Siamese Nights," shows one of the things that Paul Theroux has always done well: conveying the sense of a foreign country, not by physical description, but through the feel and smell of its cities, its street people, and hidden vices. Boyd Osier is an American accountant. For what will probably be the last assignment of his career, his company sends him to Bangkok, while his wife waits in their chilly retirement home on the coast of Maine. Boyd is reluctant to join his compatriots in evening drinking at girly bars, preferring to make pencil sketches in his journal and call home to his wife. But then something happens that drags him down. And down. For once, this is not excessive, but perfectly believable. But that only makes it worse, for now the reader has no defense against participating in his degradation. Enough!

A Wonderful Reminder about Why I Loved his Books By Bryan Newman I was led to Paul Theroux twenty some years ago when my college fascination with Africa brought me to Fong and the Indians and Jungle Love. Later I was whisked away by an anachronistic image of him in polyester leisure suits and seventies sideburns as he traveled the world by train in his travel writings. But then we lost ways and it wasn't until last year's "The Last Train to Zona Verde" that I reconnected with him. It was like meeting an idolized uncle, suddenly in his seventies with his adventurous days behind him. This book was like an evening with him, spinning yarns based on his travels and experiences. It was wonderful to sit back with him and remember the way he could cast characters and turn a phrase, and with a hint of nostalgia, I feel that he has never been diminished. The stories have a lot of the his signature traits to them. The characters are wonderfully developed but often falling into madness. The settings are varied from Boston to the Amazon. And there is an string of art and culture entwined in almost all of the stories. Also, much like his career, the styles jump. I can't say how astonished I was to read O-Zone, a sudden foray into science fiction. Similarly, the short story forms jump around in this book. I was especially taken by "Long Story Short," which is a collection of vignettes of life stories, each a jewel in itself. I also appreciated throw backs like "Incident in the Oriente" which again reads almost more like a character sketch, but has a manly Hearts of Darkness feel to it. It feels a lot like the earliest things I read from Theroux.Much like my own uncles who seemed like giants of men but are now falling, I have treasured this book as time to remember what I loved about Theroux and his writing. Not to write a premature eulogy for him as a man and a writer, but it has given me the time to appreciate what he has given me. I hope there are suitcases of stories like these yet to come.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Dark, Unsettling Collection of Stories By CL The stories collected here are dark and unsettling in many ways, something that usually draws me in as a reader, but only a handful of them really worked for me. A prolific writer, Paul Theroux knows what he's doing, but some of the stories just didn't hold my interest. That being said, I'll highlight a few that did.In the opening story, a rich art collector stumbles upon the joys of destroying valuable, irreplaceable art; he takes his destruction the to the extreme, inspiring awe and fear in those around him. It's a wickedly dark tale with a perfect ending.'Rip It Up' follows two schoolboys who don't quite fit in and find themselves the targets of bullying and teasing from both their classmates and teachers. When they start building and exploding small bombs and planning their revenge, you get an idea of where the story is heading - only to be surprised by how it concludes.'Siamese Nights' deals with a man on the verge of retiring who's working in Thailand. Theroux has a talent for giving you a real sense of what it's like to be in a foreign country with very different customs. In the story, the narrator has an affair with a local Thai woman he meets at a bar, only to slowly discover she isn't exactly what she seems. He begins imagining staying on in Thailand and living out his days with his new lover, but things take a grim turn after the two have a misunderstanding. The ending really took me by surprise. It's possibly my favorite of the bunch.Overall, I enjoyed many of these stories, but once I finished, I didn't feel the desire to go out and read everything else the author has ever written. I can always tell how much I like a book by how much I want to read other work by the writer.

Mrs. Hudson, the landlady of Sherlock Holmes, was a long-suffering woman. Not only was her first-floor flat invaded at all hours by throngs of singular and often undesirable characters but her remarkable lodger showed an eccentricity and irregularity in his life which must have sorely tried her patience. His incredible untidiness, his addiction to music at strange hours, his occasional revolver practice within doors, his weird and often malodorous scientific experiments, and the atmosphere of violence and danger which hung around him made him the very worst tenant in London.

This tale occurs quite late in the series and only serves as a very short story showcasing Holmes's taste for the dramatic. A surprise at the end makes for a hearty chuckle at Holmes's wit.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Holmes Plays Possum By Scrapple8 Watson described this adventure as one that occurred in the second year of his married life, which probably means that it occurred during the time of `The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.' Holmes lived alone at Baker Street, but Mrs. Hudson checked up on her tenant. In this adventure, a concerned Mrs. Hudson brought Dr. Watson to Baker Street, where he found Holmes delirious, sometimes incoherent, and possibly on his death-bed. Holmes steadfastly refused to see a doctor, but after a period of cajoling, Watson finally secured a promise from Holmes to see someone - a specialist in Eastern disease named Culverton Smith. It is the master of deception at his peak, and his manipulation of the villain is artistic, but there is not much detection in this case, which ultimately makes this case somewhat unsatisfying.`The Adventure of the Dying Detective is the fifth of the eight cases published in His Last Bow, a collection of Sherlock Holmes short stories published in 1917.

The tale relates the story of two sisters, daughters of an Anglican vicar, who return from overseas to a drab, lifeless vicarage in the post-First World War East Midlands. Their mother has run off, a scandal that is not talked about by the family. Their new home is dominated by a blind and selfish grandmother along with her mean spirited, poisonous daughter. The two girls, Yvette and Lucille, risk being suffocated by the life they now lead at the Vicarage. They try their utmost every day to bring colour and fun into their lives. Out on a trip with some friends one Sunday afternoon, Yvette encounters a Gypsy and his family and this meeting reinforces her disenchantment with the oppressive domesticity of the vicarage. It also awakens in her a sexual curiosity she has not felt before, despite having admirers. She also befriends a married Jewish woman who has left her husband and is living with her paramour. When her father finds out about this friendship, he threatens her with "the asylum" and Yvette realizes that at his heart her father, too, is mean spirited and shallow. At the end of the novel, Yvette is rescued during a surprise flood that washes through the home and drowns the grandmother. The rescuer who breathes life and warmth back into the virginal Yvette is the free-spirited Gypsy. Yvette's life is changed forever after.

Read this when I was at school but couldn't remember much so good to have another go. A novella they call it. Always been intrigued where the cut-off point is. Here's my chance to find out!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. on kindle at last By amazon customer Good to see this little known Lawrence getting an airing, It was his final book which rehearses his usual themes of personal liberation through sexual knowledge. I loved the pictures of travellers dotted throughout the book

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Sexuality and social class... By Jak ... and liberation from mean-spirited domesticity -- topics that no one addresses with more insight than D. H. Lawrence -- make for another very readable work. This version of his last novel is beautifully illustrated as well as being well-formatted for Kindle. Great pity it was his last.

There are good things which we want to share with the world and good things which we want to keep to ourselves. The secret of our favourite restaurant, to take a case, is guarded jealously from all but a few intimates; the secret, to take a contrary case, of our infallible remedy for seasickness is thrust upon every traveller we meet, even if he be no more than a casual acquaintance about to cross the Serpentine. So with our books.

The Chronicles of Clovis, by Saki

About the Author Saki was the pen name of the British writer Hector Hugh Munro (1870 1916). In addition to his short stories, of which he was an acknowledged master, he also wrote a full-length play, "The Watched Pot", in collaboration with Charles Maude; two one-act plays; a historical study, "The Rise of the Russian Empire"; a short novel, The Unbearable Bassington"; a parody of Alice in Wonderland", "The Westminster Alice"; and a fantasy about England under German occupation, When William Came".A. A. Milne was an English novelist and playwright born in 1882. A student of H. G. Wells during public school, Milne went on to study mathematics in Cambridge. During his time there, Milne frequently contributed to the college s student magazine, Granta, and was so successful that he was offered a job at the British humour magazine Punch. Milne s son, Christopher Robin, was born in 1920. After writing a poem for him entitled Teddy Bear, Milne began publishing children s stories about Christopher Robin and his stuffed animals, including his bear, Winnie-the-Pooh. Milne s children s books, Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, have since become beloved classics that have been adapted into the famous Disney franchise. Milne died in 1956 at the age of 74.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Proofreader's Nightmare By Jackie Lee I love Saki. These are some of the best, most biting, hilarious gems ever written in the English language. However, the Kindle edition is so hard to read, that I must subtract two stars for the formatting. The Kindle edition is very hard to read because of the awkward line breaks and kerning. I believe the digitization of this book to have been untouched by human hands, with no proofreading at all. Some lines have four words evenly spaced out to each margin. In other instances, a hyphenated word will have an additional hyphen inserted midway to make a line break. Other pages have "widows or orphans", a solitary word on one page. Each time I encounter one of these, the eye and the brain go "Ker-thunk!" an it spoils the sense and rhythm of the story. Not worth even the low Kindle price; too many aggravations.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Not Formatted for Kindle 2 By Karon Flage It is Saki so of course the stories are marvelous. My one star is for the Kindle Edition. Every other line only contains two words so it is not a smooth block of text for the eye to follow.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great Short Stories By Dave_42 This is the third collection of short stories by Saki, which was originally published in 1911. This collection includes 28 short stories which are very loosely centered on Clovis Sangrail (a somewhat mischievous upper-class youth), although there are several stories in the collection which are not linked at all to that character. Many of the stories are fable-like, but the mood of the stories varies greatly. Whatever dark, satirical, cynical, or just plain bizarre, each is a treat for the reader. All these stories are worthwhile, but some of my favorites are "Tobermory", "Sredni Vashtar", "The Music on the Hill", and "The Unrest-Cure" to name a few. The quality of the stories is high throughout the collection. This book appears to currently be out of print; however there are many free versions now available on the web. This is fortunate for everyone who wants to read his stories.Saki (the name came from the cupbearer in "The Rubayat" of Omar Khayyam) is the pseudonym of H. H. Munro (Dec. 18, 1870 - Nov. 13, 1916) a subject of the British Empire who was born in Burma the son of a Scottish military policeman. Sadly, Munro was killed in France while serving during World War I by a sniper.
